Grant Taylor, owner of Mashambanzou Safaris is a "stand up guy". Mozambique, especially Grant's areas are in the rebuilding stage after the prolonged civil war. Grant is doing a excellent job in this regard. Being Mozambique, do not go expecting the amount of game seen in SA. The numbers are on the rebuild but are adequate. The one exception was for Suni & Red Duiker. Grant has access to a private concession of 30,000 hectares that is loaded with both of them. We also saw a 29"-30" Nyala there but we were not after one. I was extremely satisfied with all aspects of my hunt and would hunt with Grant and Mashambanzou Safaris again. Note: A few days before my arrival Grant and a European client harvested a one tusk elephant that we estimated at close to 100lbs!

For hippo. Under normal conditions you should have a choice of 4 or 5 bulls each day in the Zambezi. Due to high water they were in back waters and invisible. Took 3 days for us to get near a bull and then hard to get a shot as only nose, eyes and ears visible. |

Tracking buffalo is always exciting. Sometimes you can catch up to them, other times they catch a changing wind or you bump them in the high grass! |

Recommendations: |
Use enough gun. Buffalo are tough animals to bring down sometimes. We used the CZ-USA Safari Classic in 416 Rigby caliber. It worked fine on both the buffalo we shot with it. I wouldn't use anything less. I would also suggest a longer safari if you plan on shooting other species. Since this is wide open African hunting and not fenced, you need more time to travel and find the different animals you are looking for. We did a 2x1 hunt for 7 days and I should have done this for 14 days as the time went too fast! I will return to hunt this area again! |

Recommendation: This area is still the way "Old" Africa was. This is not a developed area. The local people are still gatherers and try to grow some local crop to live on. The still live in stick, mud and thatch huts like they have for over a 1000 years without any change. Truly a great experience that is getting harder to find as Africa becomes more developed. |

We were filming this hunt for an upcoming episode for Cliff's Wild Outdoor Adventures television series. Hunting with a camera crew always makes it more of a challenge. Grant Taylor worked with us to get great footage and a good show. Grant is a very hard working outfitter and is concerned that everyone is having a great safari. He uses exceptionally good trackers and we hunted buffalo the way I like to hunt them. We drive until we cut tracks, then determine if they are fresh enough to follow. Once it is decided they are fresh, the chase is on. Tracking can be for miles and from dawn til dark! So be prepared to walk a lot! That is what makes this type of safari so much fun. It is not a shoot the next one from the truck type of safari. You need to get out and walk and hunt!! This area has good populations of Cape buffalo, Lichtenstein hartebeest, Livingstone eland, Chobe bushbuck, Livingstone suni, red duiker, common bush duiker, sable, common reedbuck and lots of very large baboons. We saw fresh leopard tracks most days and we did bump into a pride of lions and that was very exciting to film.
