Problems of Hunt: I shot the aoudad from 435 yards. It took us 15-20 minutes to get to where the animal went down. The aoudad was gone when we got there. We looked for it for 45 minutes and then the guide said he was going back. I told him I wanted to look some more and he left. I waved for my guest to come and help me look. After the guide left me, he told my guest on the radio not to go. I felt that the guide was getting paid enough to spend the time to look and also not to interfere with me looking. The guide left at 1:45. There was no need to leave. I guess he knew he was getting paid whether we found it or not. Highlights of Hunt: Beautiful country. Equipment Recommendations: Need good optics. Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? This hunt was over priced. We ate off paper plates and only had two meals cooked for us. We were given a choice of cereal or pre-made burritos for breakfast. The guide by his own admission was not familiar with a large portion of the ranch.

I also took it for granted that the guide would do as much as he could to track the aoudad.

I have booked another hunt with the neighboring ranch. The cost of their hunt is $1,695. The lodging is not as nice and no food is provided. I am not upset about not retrieving the animal. That happens sometimes. Next time, I will put another round in it. Rebuttal from Jim Roche: Thank you very much for contacting me in regard to the hunt report filed by Shane S. McClung of Abilene, TX. After reading through his negative account of our hunt together, I am left with only disappointment. While Shane does include some factual statements, he has deliberately chosen to use primarily false statements and half truths in order to lead readers into a negative opinion of our guide service and thus justify his return home without a sheep. Here is the rest of the story as Paul Harvey used to say: Shane contacted me in mid February about an aoudad sheep hunt. I explained our hunts to him. He then asked, "What were the earliest dates I had open?" I said that I would be guiding at the Crown X Ranch until February 28th and that I was guiding again March 4th thru March 19th at the same ranch. He said March 1st would be fine with him and that he wanted to hunt free range aoudad on the Crown X Ranch. I told Shane that I was familiar with 28,000 acres of the ranch including the 5,000 acre preserve but that I was not very familiar with the back 8,000 acres of the ranch where many of the free range sheep lived. It is a very broken country with tremendous sheer rock cliffs and a maze of endless canyons that fall off into the Rio Grande river drainage that borders Mexico. I said that I could guide him for a couple of days in the free range area and if we were not successful we could hunt in the preserve. He said that would be ok. Shane arrived to the ranch the evening of Sunday February 28th in the midst of a huge windstorm where winds reached approximately 60 mph. Recorded wind speeds 1,000 feet below at the Marfa, TX airport reached 47 mph. The storm knocked out the electricity to the ranch (the lodge is all electric including the stoves) and phone. I was preparing Cornish Game Hens with wild rice, mixed green vegetables, dinner rolls and chocolate cake for desert. I ended up cooking only the chicken before the power went out. I was concerned that Shane might not be able to enter the ranch's electric gates so I started driving the 12 miles to meet him when I saw their headlights coming in. The electric gate I had been worried about turned out to be solar powered. We returned to the lodge and ate under flashlights. I asked Shane what he and his companion would like for breakfast the next morning. He said something "light." We retired for the evening. The next morning I served them bacon, potato and egg burritos along with a fresh fruit tray, coffee and orange juice. I packed everyone a lunch and we headed out for a day of sheep hunting. We had not driven a mile when we discovered a large tree had blown over in the storm, blocking the main ranch road. Shane and his companion helped me hook up the 9,000 lb winch cable and remove the barricade. We soon saw 15 sheep with one 27 inch ram. Shane was ready to try for him but I said he was not mature and that we could do better. Howard Schwertfeger had recently seen a large herd of 80 sheep in the same vicinity with several large aoudad rams topping the magic 30 inch mark. The persistent high winds were still with us with winds recorded speeds of 39 mph scattering the sheep around the ranch. We ended what I thought to be a good day of hunting over a supper of homemade chicken enchiladas, Mexican rice, barracho beans and fresh cookies that Jennifer had recently brought over. My wife Melony had prepared much of our food just prior to the hunt because she was unable to be with us. Her mother was dying of pancreatic cancer and Hospice had called the family in to be together. Because I had committed to guide Shane I was not with her but tried to monitor her mother's condition by cell service. We did eat off paper plates, but it was just us "guys" and I did not think anyone would mind. Over the following two days we had cereal and sausage & egg burritos, pack lunches with plenty of water and Gatorade, rib eye steaks, twice baked potatoes, salads, pound cake with strawberry drizzle etc. In fact the evening Shane left early, we were going to have Herb Chicken stuffed with Crawfish etouffee. I served the same menu to our very next client who flew into Marfa in his own private Citation II jet. He said the food was very good. The second day of hunting we saw around 25 total sheep with a couple being close to the lodge. Again Shane asked about those sheep. I said that they were young rams and with the wind laying down we might start seeing some of the bigger sheep that the ranch is famous for. The sheep had really scattered deep into the canyons in an attempt to get out of the wind storm. I felt confident that sooner or later I would be able to show him something in the 30-33 inch range. Over the past year we have not shot a sheep under 30 inches! I take my guiding very serious and I wanted Shane to get a nice ram. We drove several miles up a long canyon until it eventually dead ended into the 5,000 acre preserve pasture. It was getting close to lunch time so I told Shane that I had been seeing some coyotes hanging around the base of this mountain and to have his rifle ready. We drove into the preserve pasture and soon found ourselves staring at a herd of around 50 sheep with 2 pushing 29 inches. Shane passed on the rams saying that he would rather take a small free range sheep than a big high fence ram. I respected his decision and his next as he passed on a huge addax bull that will soon be closed to all hunting thanks to the Humane Society. We headed for the back part of the ranch where I spotted a distant herd of 18 sheep. The herd ram looked mature but only about 28 inches. We kept a careful eye on those sheep while still looking for bigger sheep. It was getting late so we started back down the rough mountain road in 4WD low range. On the way down and with the help of the setting sun behind us I spotted what appeared to be 3 sheep 2 miles away in the same canyon we had driven up that morning. We drove to within 1,000 yards of the three rams who were now climbing up out of the canyon. None of the rams were mature and it was getting towards dark so we headed for the lodge. I told Shane that we would be leaving well before daylight to climb back up the mountain to take a position overlooking the band of sheep we had found. Excitement ran high in camp that night. Horst Schwertfeger, the patriarch of the Crown X family, came down to visit that evening. During the evening visit I learned that Shane was 45 yrs old and had only been hunting 1 ½ years. This really surprised me because he had given me the illusion of being quite the accomplished big game hunter and at no time had he disclosed his lack of experience. Then he said that his two daughters had entered the Crown X Ranch, Magnum Guide Service, and Hunting Report "Youth Essay Contest." I said really? He asked "have you not read their essays?" I said "no" because the wind storm had knocked out the electricity and internet. When they where restored I found that I was not able to open up Barbara Crown's attachments containing the essays because the lodge computer did not contain the appropriate software. I told him that I had given my vote to Howard Schwertfeger and that he and Barbara Crown, editor of the Hunting Report, had chosen a 17 yr old girl from Hondo, TX. Shane was visibly upset so I called it a night and retired for the evening but not before asking Horst where the boundaries were in the back of the ranch. He replied where the rim breaks off into the deep canyons. The next morning we left the lodge at 6:35 AM. I checked my watch because I wanted to know how long it was going to take to reach our "look out." We reached it at 7:30 AM as the sun was just breaking over the horizon. After a little while I spotted the sheep about a mile off in the distance. I turned to show Shane the sheep but he had left and was now walking 100 yards away towards another hilltop. His companion and I yelled at him and he soon returned. There were 22 sheep in that one herd with another group of sheep containing 4 rams much further away. We watched the sheep until 8:30 AM when I asked Shane what he wanted to do. I said we could go for the herd ram or pass him and continue hunting for more sheep. We were seeing more and more sheep now that the wind storm had passed. Shane chose to play it safe and go after the herd ram. We got into the jeep and headed down and around the rocky mountain at a very slow pace due to the rough road. Forty five minutes later we were parking the jeep and saddling up with our packs. We left the jeep at 9:30 AM and began our stalk on foot. It took us 20 minutes to reach a position that offered a cross canyon shot. We contemplated trying to get closer but the band of sheep were scattered across the rim of the deep canyon with many sentries on duty. The ram was bedded and we ranged him at 435 yards. I asked Shane what distance he felt comfortable shooting. He said he was very good at 300 yards and comfortable out to 500 yards. We waited 40 minutes for the sheep to stand up. When he did, Shane elected not to take my recommendation to shoot from a prone position over a backpack in true sheep hunter fashion. Instead he chose to extend his extra tall Harris Bi-pod shooting sticks and take the now 400 yard shot from a sitting position. "His companion later ranged the sheep at 398-400 yards." Shane's companion had a small "wind meter" which registered a 3 mph cross wind. The ram walked in and out of the herd following one ewe that was apparently coming into heat. I estimated the ram at 8 years of age and about 28 inches with very heavy bases. Shane's companion could not find the sheep in the video camera's view finder so I took the camera and filmed the shot. When the ram cleared, Shane sent the 190 grain Berger Bullet on it's way. The ram fell to the shot then staggered back up on his front feet dragging his rear legs. He attempted to make a small circle. I said "Shane you better hit him again" but about that time the sheep fell down with the entry side to the blue sky. The sheep flicked his ear a couple of times then lay motionless with nothing but a large horn sticking skyward. The video was clean and captured fully on film. I high-fived Shane and his companion while bragging on Shane's marksmanship. About 8 minutes later we saddled up our packs and began to walk across the canyon to reach his sheep. I took notice of the time and it was 11:00 AM. It took us 20 minutes to cross the brush choked, cactus infested canyon. When we got to where the sheep was supposed to be laying, he was no where to be found. There was no blood, no hair, no meat, only the video of the event. The three of us started making circles up, down, and around the mountain. Where the sheep had been was on a sheer rock point with two sides dropping off hundreds of feet into the neighbor's ranch. I walked the entire rim of the steep canyon while peering down into the deep canyon looking for sign of the sheep. I did not find any proof that led me to believe the sheep bailed off the 1,000 foot canyon wall but it's more than likely where he went. We all searched for 2 ½ hours, which included Shane's companion returning to the point from where Shane had taken the cross canyon shot. By radio he directed us to the exact spot where the ram had fallen. Shane reviewed the video tape and told me that it looked like a low shoulder shot. I told him I thought it was a high back shot and that the Berger Match Bullet must not have penetrated or expanded on its way through for there was no blood where the sheep had fallen, just mashed dirt. We grabbed a bite of lunch then Shane announced that he wanted to go down into the deep canyon below. I said no because it was not our ranch. Horst had clearly explained the boundary the night before to all of us and the perimeter fence that had once prevented livestock from entering the canyon was clearly visible. I said we have no blood, no meat, no hair, or rock slides to prove the sheep had escaped that way. In Texas, trespassing is a Third Degree Felony. If we had good evidence we would have contacted the Texas Parks & Wildlife Game Warden to ask for permission to pursue the sheep. It was now 3:00 PM in the afternoon and dark was at 7:00 PM (pre-daylight savings time). Shane was visibly upset once more. As a professional guide one of my duties is to try and keep hunters safe. After guiding and hunting in Alaska for 12 years and 33 years in Texas I was well aware of the inherent dangers facing Shane. He sports an extra 30 lbs, comes from a town with an elevation of 1,700 ft and we were now at 6,500 ft. The temperatures were pushing 80 degrees and Shane has a condition where he has to go to the bathroom repeatedly throughout the day leaving him potentially dehydrated. In this vast desert country hydration is critical. I told Shane that we were not walking off the Crown X Ranch and on to someone else's ranch. He said "so what now?" I said "Shane, you did your best but your sheep is wounded and lost." I said "I know it stings, but it happens sometimes and if you hunt long enough it will probably happen again." He said, "What a waste of $4,250!!" With that we walked back to the jeep with him dragging some 75 yards behind. We drove back down the mountain in almost total silence. Shane informed me that he was going to head out because he needed to get back to Abilene. He said a friend of his had passed away and the funeral was the following day. I offered Shane a 50% discount off the non-hunter rate he owed us if he would simply send me an un-edited copy of the video tape so that I may review it myself. I wanted to see where the sheep had been hit. His companion had taken 263 digital photos with his 12 mega pixel Camera and said he would send me a disk. I asked Shane if he had brought his audio visual cables so that we could review the video on the Crown X lodge's HD big screen TV. Shane said "no." While he packed and took a quick shower I phoned Howard Schwertfeger to see if he would come over to the lodge with his AV cables from his video camera. Before Howard got to the lodge, Shane had already left in a hurry. Without tipping, I might add. A few days later Barbara Crown and her husband showed up to the ranch where by she harvested a 31 inch ram and was able to interview some of the other recent hunters who had nothing but good things to say about Magnum Guide Service. Guide and hunter both share a role in the success or failure of a hunt. Shane is simply un-willing to accept the responsibility of swinging for the fence with his custom Gun Works .300 Win Mag rifle, custom scope, custom 190 grain Berger Match bullets, and ending up with only a "foul tip." I regret that I was unable to provide Shane with an opportunity at a sheep larger than 28 inches, and within a range that he was better suited for. I did the very best I could but according to Shane, "I was only Fair." In closing, just before Shane left the ranch, he handed me a handwritten and signed authorization (shown to Barbara Crown) to charge his credit card for the non-hunter fee for $585.00, less 50% if he sent me an un-edited copy of the video so I could review his shot. It has now been 3 weeks and we have not received the video. Melony tried to run Shane's Credit Card last night and it was declined. Jim Roche Additional comment by Todd Darrow, Shane McClung's hunting partner: I was with Shane on his hunt with Magnum Guide Service. I would like to respond to the response that Jim made. After the ram was shot at no time did Jim ask Shane to take another shot. This can be verified by the video. At no time before the shot was taken or after we were looking for the ram did Jim give any indication that the ram had left the property or that any search would take us off the property that we were on. Rerebuttal from Shane McClung: Thanks for sending me a copy of Jim's response. My original report was accurate. I limited the report to what I saw. Jim stated my hunting experience was 1 1/2 years, this is not correct. My first guided hunt was about 1 year ago. I have hunted since I was about 10. I am a very good shot and like owning high quality equipment. My main complaint with Jim was that he would not stay and look for the animal. This is why I did not tip. I believe that there are a few important duties that all guides should perform. These duties are: 1. be very familiar with hunting area. 2. help hunter in locating, stalking and judging animal. 3. aid hunter in retrieving or tracking injured animal. I think a guide has an obligation to spend whatever time is necessary to locate an injured animal. I can understand if there were extenuating circumstances. It was about 1:45 pm and only around 68 degrees. Why not look around some more? There was no discussion the whole day (before or after the shot) concerning any property lines. Jim never mentioned my card not working for him. I mailed him a check for $585 today to cover Todd's non-hunter fee.

Problems of Hunt: Highlights of Hunt: Jim had explained what to expect and detailed several top bulls he had seen on other hunts. The morning was spent viewing many types of animals and 2 or 3 good bulls. Lengthy stalk, I dropped the bull at 140 yards. Ranging my fourth hit with .375. I don't know when he passed me his rifle to finish him with this "pop gun". It was a 458 Lott and I did. You need a very large caliber weapon. Equipment Recommendations: Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? Jim has the experience and ethics to insure a true quality hunt. With careful assessment of the trophy quality of what is taken to retrieve and take care of an animal this large takes special skill which he has. Plus, he has a walk-in freezer and cooler available on site.

I realize this is a dated report, but after reading the articles the past two months in The Hunting Report I thought I would submit this. This was our second hunt with Magnum Guide Service. Our first hunt (New Mexico pronghorn) was a very good experience also. Jim was kind enough to let us switch from a pronghorn hunt we had scheduled with him, to this hunt due to scheduling conflict. When hunted in 2006, my wife and I were the first hunters on the Crown X in 25 years and this was Jim's first trip on the ranch. He told us straight up prior to the hunt that he had not visited the ranch yet, but had seen pictures and it looked very promising. He cautioned us though that it could be "feast or famine". After meeting the Schwertfeger family, Howard started showing us around the ranch. The "feast" had started. Animals galore. Maybe the closest I'll ever get to Africa. About 10 that morning, Jim spotted a band of rams within 20 minutes of getting our bearings on the ranch and the hunt was on. My wife, Myra and I both shot our rams one hour before dark that evening. Will definitely hunt with Magnum Guide Service again and highly recommend others do the same. You can't beat Jim and Melony.

I had a wonderful, relaxing, experience with Jim Roche and his wife Melony. They have a super operation. Melony is a great cook. Don't go expecting to lose weight. Jim is an excellent guide. He knows his quarry (and his clients) very well. I went primarily to hunt bobcats. This is difficult in the summer when there is so much for them to eat. Jim called a cat in to within 30 yards. I just flat missed. Jim gave me the opportunity to take what I came for. I did harvest a nice javelina, and a lot of other varmints. The gun barrel was hot. While bowhunting for javelina the first evening, I had 6, 8, and 10 point bucks walk within easy bow range. The 10 pointer was already a Pope and Young buck with another month left to grow. I also saw hundreds of turkeys with lots of mature gobblers, and several hens with poults. The turkey and deer hunting looks excellent for the next few years. I hope to be able to go back for my bobcat, and would very much like to book a hunt with Jim in Alaska for bear, moose and caribou. I was only around Jim and Mel for a few days, but I can tell that they know what they are doing and try very hard to make sure their clients have a safe, successful, and enjoyable experience. I would not hesitate to recommend Magnum Guide Service to anyone.
