Problems of Hunt: Make sure you know that lions in lower elevations, such as the Selous, do not have significant manes. We saw 5 males; 3 had no manes, and the other 2 (including mine) only had mane on their neck under their jaws. Highlights of Hunt: Getting a big lion and leopard was thrilling. Equipment Recommendations: This was my first time hunting Cape buffalo with a double rifle. The confidence you'll have with that in your hands, as compared to using a bolt-action gun, is awesome. I highly recommend it. Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? The Selous is an amazing place. The quantity of game there is outstanding. You'll also be pleased with the high chances of success you'll have for cats. I've hunted previously for one of the great lions in Western Tanzania and the odds there are that you'll go home empty-handed. The number of buffalo there exceeds any place I've ever seen. One day we saw a herd of about 500! I got it on film and it's a sight to see.

The staff and trackers in Luke Samaras' Utunge Camp are excellent. If this company would market as well as some of their competition, you'd have to book with them at least 3 years in advance to get on board. I've hunted with TGT in Tanzania previously and Luke matches them in most everyway, while exceeding them substantially in lion hunting success ratios. You just won't find the hugely maned lions in the Selous like you will in other spots around the country, but your chances of coming home with a big cat from the Selous are very good.

Problems of Hunt: None, after 30 years in the business, The Luke Samaras Safari Co. based in Dar Es Salaam is absolutely as professional a company as you will ever do business with in any instance!! Highlights of Hunt: Seeing the big 4 in one day, not once but twice, IE lion, leopard, buffalo, and elephant. Think about it to see those four animals in daylight once in your life, in a true fair chase is amazing, but twice is unreal. Equipment Recommendations: Deet repelant, sunscreen. Know your rifle and how it shoots. Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? The company and all it's employees are as good as it gets, their professionalism is outstanding, the camps/food/staff are amazing, the coordination is second to none, and the professional hunter, (Nigel Theison) is an absolute pleasure to be with. This was not my first trip with Luke, and I am very lucky to be able to say I have been there with Nigel numerous times.

I am not sure how many people dream of a safari their whole life, and commit the cardinal sin when it comes to a dangerous game hunt in Tanzania or other countries. Even though they think they do their homework doing business with a company such as The Luke Samaras Co., which is established and based there is so much to your advantage, they have a relationship with the Game Dept. because they have been there so long and are respected by the Game Dept., there are no problems with trophy shipments because they are a Tanzanian based resident company, as opposed to so many that are out there sub contracting areas, and the possibility of "Confusion" is a distinct fact. From the time you arrive, charters, hotels ect. have all been co-ordinated with Luke's wife, Mrs. Jane Samaras, (and trust me, she could handle any shark on Wall St.!!) they have done it for close to 30 years and have encountered any and all situations, they are consumate professionals, I cannot say enough in regards to and with respect to them personally or their operation. As far as Mr. Nigel Theison, you would have to go a long way to find someone as well versed not only in trophy judgement, but also in his knowledge of all species of game animals, birds, varmints, ect. It is like being with a biologist, and just a plain hard working, very funny, great guy, he can't be described any better than that. He'll never forget your face or your name and he always has a smile on his face, I am, and have been flattered to have been so lucky the day I met him.

Problems of Hunt: Lost lion bait to cheap rope. The scope bases vibrated loose. Highlights of Hunt: This was my first safari so everything was a highlight. Equipment Recommendations: Clear safety type glasses for early and late driving in an open car. Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? This was an experience I'll cherish for the rest of my life. But I couldn't recommend it for lion. Everything else was abundant. If we would have worked at it harder, I think I could have gotten my elephant.
