What a great hunt! I went with two of my friends, one being 82 yrs old! We got 3 male nilgai, one female, and 3 hogs in two days. One gold and 2 high silver. Nilgai are very tough to put down even with a large cal., unless the shot placement is perfect. The meat is better than elk or moose and great for you. I would highly recommend this hunt, as it's loads of fun and the people are great. Call me if you need any info.

A fantastic hunt! Sam is extremely competent, has a great area to hunt and super equipment. Hunting is done safari style via open jeep, than game is stalked on foot. Minimum .300 mag with premium bullets requested as Nilgai are tough animals and hard to keep down. Food and lodging are first class, and the overall experience is fantastic! Sam will do his absolute best to get you a trophy of your life and guarantees a shot! You just can't go wrong with Lomas Chicas Outfitters. |

The Nilgai is a very unique game animal and an excellent addition to any trophy room. His odd physical characteristics, and smallish hors for his size make him one that is really noticed. A bonus is that he is also excellent table fare and just plain fun to hunt. ANYONE can take part in a Nilgai hunt with Sam Ilse's outfitter service. He is honest as the day is long and just plain fun to hunt with. I feel like I arrived as a client and left as a friend. There is no place I could knock the operation. I have been on good and bad hunts with good and bad outfitters and guides. Sam and Lomas Chicas Outfitters rates as one of the best.

Extremely alert and spooky. If first shot does not bring down the animal, the guide will make follow up shot. A wounded animal is virtually impossible to locate in thick mesquite. The soil is "beach sand" and leaves no spoor for tracking. Trick of hunting is to locate a bull before he has spotted you. Easier said, than done. Many bulls were already in full flight at 1,000 yards. |

Most challenging hunt I have ever made in North America. Terrain easy but approach to game tough. Nilgai is among the best game meat in US. All hunts are free range. |

With the possiblity of shooting more than one bull, you can truly concentrate on a "super trophy". Judging is very hard since most bulls run around 9 inches. Top of the record book is 10-11 inches. One inch or less difference. |

Hunt is free-range on approximately 19,000 acres, 15 X 18 mile ranch. No high wire - lots of turkey and BIG! Whitetail deer, but you can't hunt them at present but beautiful to watch close up. Lots of pigs. You couldn't find more pleasant people. House where you stay is spotless - was taken to taxidermist after hunt and all arrangements made - couldn't be better. |

I can not say enough on how hard Sam works to make sure that I was going to get the best Nilgia he could find. He will hunt as long as you want to hunt daylight to dark. He was first class all the way. This hunt is as close as you will get to going on a African safari here in the USA.

A great time, Sam is a superb judge of game, no small feat on a nilgai. We saw quite a few shootable bulls, even with the cold weather, which the nilgai don't like one bit. An extremely wary animal, they are a blast to hunt. Fantastic on the grill too. |

Recommendations: |
High-top boots, there are tons of sand spurs. Snake chaps and gaiters would also be prudent. Bring a .375 or better, with well-constructed bullets, these critters are tough. Even after a well placed shot on an unaware animal, it took two more solid hits to bring down. Very impressive. |

Sam runs a really tight operation - he knows the ranch and the animals intimately, with over 25 years experience there. Trophy care was expertly handled, with the processor coming out to the field to pick up and handle the meat and cape. Lodging was also very nice, being in a bed and breakfast-type affair on the coast, with fishing at your front doorstep, if you like. Our hosts there were also extremely capable and gourmet cooks as well. How can you beat this?
