SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
The airline bring bags late was really the main problem. The weather is to be expected on a hunt in the Alaskian Peninsula. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Watching the bear work his way down the creek, fishing for salmon as he went. The scenery was tremendous, and the hunting from a boat took away a lot of the problems of wet clothes and gear. Every night you could get it dried out and be ready for the next day. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Framed, big back pack. Good hip boots for walking in the bog and tundra. Must fir right so they don't get sucked off your feet. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
Yes |
| Why? |
The ability to get together after a days hunting on the boat, and work together with the other hunters to help get their bear. The guides did an excellent job of making this an enjoyable hunt. |

This was a very enjoyable hunt for myself and my two other friends that went with me. Mike Litzen runs a good operation, and his guides are excellent. The boat makes this a very enjoyable hunt, but it is a physical.

The guide made too much noise with his Koflach boots, and plastic bags inside his backpack. The guide took too long to decide on animals to pursue. If you hunt with Litzen for moose, you will need to be in excellent physical shape. You will need strong legs and back. Stair climbers would be a good exercise while wearing your frame pack with a lot of weight. Upwards of 100 pounds. This isn't a easy hunt, walking through the tundra really eats you up. Luckily I didn't experience any symptoms of asthma, or otherwise I would have been done. Because you will sweat and breathing hard. If I went to do another moose hunt, I would find a outfitter that would hunt the river banks for moose and float down the river on a boat. This hunt was too hard to be enjoyable.
---------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW DOCUMENT ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Date: September 24, 2003 To: The Hunting Report From: Michael Litzen of Litzen's Guide Service RE: Complaint from Curt Lentner
This letter is in response to comments made of my operation from a moose/caribou hunting client that I took in September of 2002 to your publication. Mr. Lentner made no complaints to either me or Cabela's who booked him, after the hunt that was a year ago so I was unaware that he felt there was a problem.
Mr. Lentner commented that his reason for not getting a caribou was that his guide told him to wait for a better bull. This is true, it was the first day and it was a mediocre bull and was in our best judgement that he could get a better one. Several days in to the hunt though Mr. Lentner became uninterested in caribou and wanted to only concentrate on moose.
Mr. Lentner commented that his guide took too long to decide on animals to pursue. When there are antler restrictions on moose a guide must be very cautious. He also complained about his guide's boots squeaking, I don't know how to respond to that. He was not happy with the fact that his guide backed him up on his moose. Guides in Alaska are required by law to take steps to not lose game and his moose was moving into the brush.
One of Mr. Lentner's biggest complaints seemed to be the difficulty he had with walking on tundra, there is no question that that kind of terrain requires a hunter to be in good shape. Mr. Lentner's suggestion for hunters that hunt with my service to get in shape including a stair climber is an excellent suggestion I wish more hunters would take personal responsibility for getting themselves in shape for a hunt. When Cabela's booked him on the hunt the catalog that listed my service pointed our that it had a high physical difficulty rating.
After moving Mr. Lentner and his guide with two days left to hunt they were perusing a moose I estimated to be in the 70-inch class. Mr. Lentner took a 59-inch moose while hunting this larger moose. The year Mr. Lentner hunted with us we were 7 for 8 on moose success and had a 61-inch antler spread average.
Thank you for giving me a chance to respond to the comment on my operation.

Condition Comments: |
Unlike most Alaskan brown bear outfitters, Mike Litzen is conservative at best when squaring his bears. The condition of the animals we saw was excellent with most boars having been out of the dens only a few weeks and the sows and cubs still holed-up on most instances |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
None. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Using a commercial fishing boat (The Patricia Ann) as our camp headquarters. |

Recommendations: |
Be ready for every type of Alaskan weather occurrence. |

Yes |
| Why? |
Mike Litzen runs a first class operation. He has guides that each have their own personality but are all easy to get along with and actually talk about anything you ask. Mike's area is not so large that you don't get to hunt part of it. Using The Patricia Ann boat really helps cover the country for a spring bear hunt. |
