| Highlights
of Hunt: |
I decided to hunt a lioness with my .475 Turnbull lever action rifle. This is NOT a canned lion hunt. The lions are roaming freely on 26,000 acres. They are killing game, breeding, and being lions. Saw multiple tracks each day while hunting pains game. A large male circled camp each night. Lions roaring most nights. Chilly feeling to wake up at 2 am and hear a lion roaring near camp. Took two days of scouting to find a lioness track large enough to follow. Took two days to track and find the lion. At one point, the lioness had hidden in a thicket..as we followed the tracks, she had doubled back and hid in this thicket. As we walked by she bolted and literally scared all of us...she was only 10 feet away. Took a few more hours to find her, then a 25 yard shot with my .475 and then my son (14 yrs old) getting the final kill shot into her. A wonderful, magnificent trophy. My son was the most excited at getting a shot at his first "big five' game animal. This was a hard, tough, walk and stalk and track hunt. Overall a four day hunt. Second highlight was treeing a caracal and my son shooting his 'second cat' on his African safari. Morgan's brother, Ryan, filmed the hunt for us. Can't wait to get the final DVD. They do an excellent job of filming, editing, narrating and putting fantastic music to the hunt. It's so much fun to watch your hunt 'live' on DVD...even years later, brings back great memories. This will be our third DVD with them. Eating the lion and caracal. Yes, we had the tenderloins...grilled. My son and I both finished off the entire plate! They were tender, full of beefy - almost elk-like- flavor. No one else would touch them...but don't waste it. It was delicious! I told my son: No one, in the entire world of six billion people, right now, is eating lion and caracal together at this very moment...just you and me! What could be more special. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
I wanted to use my .475 turnbull lever action. Open sights. Off hand shooting. Exciting hunting... getting close. That .475 shoots straight and is lightning fast. Every one in camp wanted turns shooting it. Used Barnes triple X 400 grain. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
yes |
| Why? |
Fantastic hunt. Great, fun and knowledgeable PH. Morgan knows the territory and knows his animals. He's a great, big five PH. He also got along really well with my son. My son wants to hunt with Morgan again. We also had a lot of laughs because Morgan was there with his younger brother, Ryan, who was filming for us. |

We stayed at the Serapa 5 star lodge. They had a spotlight lit at night by the water hole. You can sit outside your individual suite, sip wine and watch animals come to drink all night long if you want. The water hole is only 30 yards away, but the camp is surrounded by an electric fence to keep the free roaming lions out! There are rhino's there also. Always good wine available. Staff were kind of cold. But I've had this interaction before in other African camps. Beautifully decorated rooms and dinning area. Vehicles were first class. A lot of free roaming lions at this place. It's 26,000 acres...that's a lot of places to hide. One night we heard the lions roaring, we went out on the truck with spot lights and could not find those lions. We did find a lion kill. Last year, Morgan told the story of a lion creeping into the water hole at night and killing an antelope in front of the guests at the lodge. There are the small enclosure canned lion hunts available in the Kalahari area...but this is NOT one of them. Being on foot, stalking a lion is unforgettable!
