Problems of Hunt: A great hunt with a top safari company. Poaching continues to be a problem however as evidenced below. Highlights of Hunt: Having a poacher wounded buffalo charge me at 20 yards and when my PH, tracker and myself stopped shooting seeing him laying there seven paces with me. There is considerable turmoil within the hunting industry in Zambia presently in advance of the upcoming general election and widespread belief of retribution by those who were unsuccessful in previous game management allocations. Ross and Greg Michelson continue to receive high marks from local Zambians for their efforts in supporting the villages within their GMA. They have recently completed the construction of a substantial medical clinic and have formed a US company to solicit donations of equipment for the clinic and clothing for children. They urge their clients to bring school supplies and support a wide range of community activities. The high esteem with which they are held by tribal leaders, school teachers and administrators and local Zambian Game Scouts was evident everywhere we went. On top of all they do for their communities they operate a top hunting operation with knowledgeable and courteous staff and comfortable camps in a game rich area.

Hippopotamus are everywhere in the Luangwa River as are the most incredible populations of Crocodiles of all sizes. We had six Lion strike baits and Leopards were also seen. The area is well preserved and the operator has a very good working relationship with the Wildlife Authority and supports their anit-poaching efforts which show in the numbers of animals one sees. No animals requested were unavailable and quality of animals taken was excellent. Poaching is evident but seems to be under control.

Problems of Hunt: The only problem we did encounter from this most professional unit was the fact that we requested to hunt Kafue Lechwe on the Kafue Flats and Black Lechwe at Bangweulu and due to the Government Game Department allocating these previously pool areas to one operator the cost of the Lechwe trophy fees was increased from previously $2,000.00 to $3,500.00 beacause of the charges that Leopard Ridge Safaris has to pay the concession holder. These fees were not in place when our hunt was booked in 2004 and are merely being passed on to the hunter. I was present when the outfitter was arranging the hunts and all fees were confirmed, that were to be charged, had we taken the hunt. Due to the exorbitant price now due we declined to take a Kafue Lechwe and also a Black Lechwe. We feel that the new concession holder is holding these operators who do not have the swamp species on their concession to ransom and these outrageous charges now make hunting these sought after species more unacceptable. Perhaps SCI should intervene here and bring some sense to this matter or alternatively remove the species from the various awards that members aspire to as the operators are clearly exploiting us as visiting hunters because they control the areas. Accompanied by wife Connie as observer. Our PH, Ian Robinson, was one of the best I have hunted with. He is young, energetic and very knowledgeable on both the animals of the area and the environment as a whole. The outfitter Leopard Ridge Safaris has exceptional camps and my wife was most comfortable at all times -- chalets were some of the best we have visited and the food was of very good quality -- sometimes too much of it. Laundry done everyday. Vehicles and equipment in the camp was top notch with the camp being fully electrified which was a surpise. The roads in the area were really well maintained and the operator makes huge efforts to upgrade them. The skinning shed is well controlled and all trophies were well prepared for shipment which is handled by Lepard Ridge from Lusaka. The camps and general service was outstanding and highly recommended to any hunter visiting Africa. The hospitality of this outfitter from meeting at the Airport In Lusaka to putting us back on the plane to come home was highly professional and friendly at every turn. The air charter company used -- Staravia -- was top notch with well maintained planes and highly qualified pilots with a wealth of flying hours behind them. The area and outfitter are of the best hunted in Africa and we intend returning for another hunt in 2009 - same operator, same PH and same camps. We have booked already. I would certainly recommend this ourfit and hunt to any serious hunter to Africa as it has everything that one is advised that is available and more - good populations of animals of good quality, top camps, friendly staff and professionals running the show. There are no hidden costs and every effort is made to make the hunting party at home. Camp atmosphere is friendly and there was always plenty of food, drinks and ice in camp.

It appeared to be among the best game areas that I have enjoyed. I expect it will improve later in the season with migration from adjacent park areas.
