This hunt had the added element of a disabled hunter using a crossbow. That greatly makes the hunt tough for hunter and guide, but that's hunting.

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
On May 26, 2001, my journey to New Zealand began. Along with me on this hunt was my wife, Lori, and Vat and Don Senter. We had booked hunts with Leithen Valley Trophy Hunts, owned and run by Alan and Sue Stewart of Gore, N.Z. The trip over was arduous, but eventually we arrived at the airport in Queenstown on the South Island of New Zealand, where we were met by Alan Stewart. Alan drove us to the Leithen Valley lodge that afternoon, (about a two and one-half hour drive) and Sue had a fantastic New Zealand meal prepared for us in no time. The views surrounding this beautiful lodge were breathtaking. There was not a bad view from any window. Any one of them could have been the picture on a postcard. We quickly met all the young people working in the camp, which included the Stewarts' daughter, Rachel, as well as Billy Sandulak from High Mountain Outfitters In Manitoba, Canada, and Scott Kendrix from San Angelo, Texas. Alan told us that we should hunt red stag in this area early the next morning, so we were prepared to brave the snow and the cold temperatures. The next morning found us dressing in the warmest clothing we had brought, and preparing to hunt for the red stag. I set out with Billy Sandulak and Rachel, and after not too much time had passed, we saw several good stags in the area; however, we were looking for one specific stag that Billy had seen earlier in the season that had large drop tines. As the snow let up, we saw the stag that we were after off in the distance, and I was able to get a shot. It turned out to be an excellent gold medal New Zealand Stag. We returned to camp and learned that Val had taken a great gold medal stag that morning as well. That afternoon, I tried out the horses with Billy again as my guide, and I took an Arapawa Ram. The next morning, I again decided to hunt on horseback and again we were facing very cold temperatures; however, the scenery was so beautiful, that one hardly noticed the cold climate. It proved to be a successful day for me as I was able to take a super fallow deer. Alan told us that we should probably move on to the next camp the following day, and that was fine with all of us, as Don had also shot an excellent fallow deer that day.
It was on to the Cameron Creek Lodge early the next morning. This was a drive of several hours, but it allowed us to take in much of the South Island's beautiful scenery. We also could observe some of the picturesque small towns that appeared along our route. When we finally arrived at the lodge, we were delighted with the accommodations. The lodge was large, lovely and comfortable. It was located about a mile or two from the little town of Wanaka. This little town was a ski resort village, and it was nestled in a valley of the Southern Alps. To add to the beauty was a large lake in the center of town. As always, Sue had a wonderful meal prepared in no time, and we can honestly say that we have never eaten better on a hunting trip. The next day, Don and I set off for the Rangitata Gorge in the Southern Alps with Alan, Rachel, and Scott to search for Himalayan tahr. Hunting in these mountains became a real challenge because of their steepness. However, Don and I was both fortunate enough to take a good tahr without busting ourselves up too badly. I shot my tahr at the head of the Arrow Water River, and Don took his tahr several miles from there. I can truthfully say that hunting in these mountains was extremely good exercise. Booking with Alan is certainly the way to go if you want to do a traditional tahr hunt. You are up in the mountains glassing and stalking on foot, whereas a lot of the New Zealand outfitters hunt tahr from helicopters. We made it back to the main camp the next day and began to get ourselves prepared for the following day's hunt for chamois, which would be done by helicopter in the mountain range called the Southern Alps of the South Island.
Hunting for chamois proved to be exhilarating, to say the least. Lori and I went up with Alan and the pilot and flew through the mountain gorges for quite some time. The scenery was fantastic, and the helicopter allowed us to have views that we had never dreamed of. Finally, we saw a good chamois, and Alan and I jumped out of the helicopter into waist-high snow and took off after the trail. This did not prove successful, so we climbed back into the helicopter, which had been hovering as we were hunting. After more searching, we saw another chamois, and Alan and I jumped out again. This time, I was more determined than ever to get this animal. Luck was with me, as I was successful and managed to take a really good chamois. Now, I could really enjoy the trip back, as I could relax with the satisfied feeling that I had had a really great hunt. It was even more exciting when we returned to camp and could hear Don's tales of his successful chamois hunt. On June 4, we began the long trip home, but what great memories I will have of my New Zealand hunt.
I would like to emphasize that Alan is a great outfitter with whom to hunt. He gets you on the right animals and has everything very well organized, from the traveling to the camp arrangements to the hunting. There are wonderful activities for hunting companions to enjoy, and beautiful sights for all to appreciate. New Zealand is a marvelous place to hunt, and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Excellent condition. The availability of tahr was average but it was winter and snowing quite a bit. So there may have been many more had we been able to see them. |
