Game Sought But Not Taken: Bushbuck - Availability: Nile bushbuck. No quota available - it is necessary to reserve in advance. Game Condition Comments: The Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve is full of animals and at this time has an estimated Uganda kob population of over 6,000 on the reserve and growing! The hunting here is trying to decide the one you want, not just finding an animal! I saw thousands of kob each day, many nile bushbuck, hundreds of oribi, adundant E. African bush duiker and the largest bodied warthogs in Africa.

Then I elected to drive to camp to see the country and film. About a 5 hour drive. Others in camp came to Entebbe via Europe and used various airline and they elected to fly to camp with Bruce Martin's private charter - about a one hour charter flight.

Equipment Recommendations: For those wanting to hunt with alternative weapons, this is a wonderful are to do that type of hunting - there are so many animals in the Kobwoya Game Reserve, it gives you many opportunties to take animals using alternative weapons, such as muzzleloaders and bows. I was accompanied on this hunt with my good friend and co-host of Wild Outdoor Adventures TV show, Jason Bruce. Jason was able to take the entire Kabwoya package (Uganda kob, Nile bushbuck, oribi, E African bush duiker, warthog) all with a bow. He will have some new SCI World Records with a bow from this hunt. In addition to the other animals, Jason was the first hunter in Uganda to hunt the Nile buffalo on a sport hunting permit since Uganda re-opened to hunting this past year. Jason was able to take a great Nile buffalo with his bow.

You hear stories about the food and lodges are not so great. These guys writing this type of stories should try a do it yourself sheep hunt. Bruce Martin is trying very hard in a great country. If you want to be treated like a sissy go to France. Until next time lets go hunting. Note from Jason Bruce - April 2010: I wanted to send a quick note about Bruce Martin at Lake Albert Safaris. I received my trophies in perfect order. They were wrapped and protected and the hides were salted and dried very clean. They were shipped through DHL and they cleared customs with a baboon and a warthog at half the cost that I've spent in the past. They were shipped to Golden State Tannery in California. We unpacked the boxes that were very well done and all four hunters trophies were labeled. I think this is important to let people know this type of stuff. I spend a lot of money hunting around the world and get some very mistreated trophies from outfitters that have been around for years. Bruce and his skinner are very new to this so this was a great surprise. Uganda is one of the best places you can go if you chose the proper outfitter.

I got a call from Bill Figge on 12/2 that we could hunt Nile bushbuck plus other species in Uganda if we could go now. We were on a plane on 12/8. I saw more bushbucks on this hunt than I saw on my other 9 bushbuck hunts put together. I saw two over 14 inches, but could not collect one. I did collect one of 13 ½ inches. The hunt is easy, mainly diesel stalking, with a short stalk on foot and a shot off sticks. The country is the easiest African country I have ever entered or exited. The people at the airport, in the hotel, in the bush and at Murchinson Fall were all friendly and most spoke English. The country is safe and what military or police presence is there is relaxed. We saw bushbuck everyday and over 200 Uganda kob per day. We were not allowed to shoot kob the first day because of the abundance of animals. Oribi and East African duiker are on license. Big and abundant. Bruce Martin is the outfitter and guide and he was excellent. He has a Cessna 182 and his charter was fast, easy and reasonable. Steve Kobrine put Bill and I with Bruce. Bruce is honest and well respected by Uganda Wildlife Authority. We finished early and Bruce flew us to Murchinson Falls. We fished on his boat and I was lucky to catch a 90 pound Nile perch. It was a great safari and it is highly recommended.
