SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
We hunted on the ocean and getting out of our spike camp set up after we took our rams, mainly due to high winds and weather conditions, was difficult. We had to use a boat pick up which took considerable time to get back to Magaden. They could not get the helicopter in to pick us up due to weather. The outfitter did a good job in making sure we got back to Magadan as scheduled. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Taking a nice ram and getting within 10 yards of a 7.5 ft brown bear |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Good mountain boots and light rain gear. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
yes |
| Why? |
This was a tent camp hunt on the ocean. The outfitter had a good tent set up and had put excellent staff there to ensure our success. We each had a guide,a guide assistant, plus a guy running a Zodiac boat checking the coastal areas for rams and an interpreter. |

|
This was a good hunt with hard working personnel who did their best to ensure success. The outfitter was prepared and runs a good outfit. Russia is a difficult place to get into and the red tape attached to carrying weapons creates delays even with visa and gun permits in hand. We had 4-5 hours getting through customs on the way into Russia and very similar on our return. We were not given a difficult time but there was just a lot of red tape. The meet and greet guy who knows their system is a must.

Warm weather kept the rams in the brush making them very hard to find. There were four hunters in base camp - we all got good rams. |

Scarce - I took my sheep on the ninth day. It was only the third ram I had seen in nine days (the first two were small sickle horned). Sheep densities were low! Outfitter claims this was a new area vs previous years. |

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |

After hunting in Alaska for five years, searching for the elusive ten-foot brown bear, I was offered the opportunity to hunt in Magadan, Russia. I met Sergei Rudakov of Kulu Safaris at the SCI convention in Las Vegas this year and was impressed by his professional manner and intrigued by the idea of hunting in Russia.
I booked a hunt with him for May 20th to June 3rd. He offers a variety of hunts including the following:
1x1 Asian brown bear - 14 days at $8,200 - this includes license, rifle, and trophy fees as well as helicopter transportation to camp (a second bear can be taken for $4,000) (observer at $1,000).
1x1 snow sheep - 14 days at $10,900 - this includes license, rifle, and trophy fees as well as helicopter transportation to camp (a second sheep is $5,500).
He is putting together a moose hunt for 2002.
On my hunt there was a total of three groups of hunters with two in each group. Sergei did a great job in keeping the hunting groups separated. He had several guides and all were experienced. They all were willing to go the extra mile to help their hunters get a bear. The hunters in each group were close friends and wanted to hunt together. I was hunting with my wife.
The Russian wilderness is spectacular and the large number of bears made it a great hunt. For a while it seemed like a polar bear hunt with all the pack ice to contend with. Then the wind changed and the ice blew out to sea. I was able to take a nine-foot bear with a 24-inch skull. The hide was in prime condition, very thick and no rubs. I saw a bear mount at SCI taken by a hunter the year before using the same guide I used and the bear is a twin to the one I took, both are nine feet. He had hunted by snow machine in the interior camp and I hunted the coast. We used an inflatable to hunt the coast and used fishing camps for our lodging. We also enjoyed the fact that we were moved to different locations which made it seem like three different hunts. We found the food to be adequate (including beer and vodka) and the equipment was in very good condition.
All of the hunters got their bear. There were four eight-foot bears, one seven-and-a-half-foot, and my nine-foot bear. One hunter took two eight-foot bears. I would not hesitate to recommend this hunt to anyone. It is also interesting to note that Sergei Rudakov has a degree in economics, his wife has a degree in biology, our guide Nikolai has a degree in geology and his wife, who is the cook, has a degree in pharmacology. One guide is retired helicopter pilot. These are all very dignified yet humble people. Sergei is very organized and a firm leader of his crew.
