Game Condition Comments: There are plenty of red deer to choose from. Hunting them is not challenging, the challenge is picking the one you like the most. Fallow deer were abundant and of good quality, even though we did not hunt them. We also saw plenty of Arapawa rams and a whitetail deer. Tahr were present and we saw them every day, but they are tough to hunt on foot. The best specimens are wary and in areas with many escape routes.

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt: None, other than airline hassles.
Highlights of Hunt: The satisfaction of climbing the mountain to take a tahr. Not for the faint hearted. My 16 year old son shot his tahr at just under 300 yards. I was extremely proud of his accomplishment of climbing the mountain, stalking the bull and making a challenging shot. And proud of myself for not having a heart attack. The Stew Point Lodge is possibly the nicest hunting lodge we have ever stayed in. It is brand new and extremely comfortable with lots of amenities - heated floor for your boots, heated towel racks, big screen TV, beautiful fireplace, beautiful mountain views, great food - nothing more you could ask for. Photos are posted in the Trophy Gallery.
Equipment Recommendations: Strong legs and high capacity lungs. We used our guides' rifles and not transporting our rifles was the best decision we made. The rifles we were provided were in excellent condition and avoiding the hassle (we followed NZ with a trip to AUS) was a huge relief.
Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? yes
Why? NZ has awesome trophies for just about any kind of hunter. If you want a huge red deer, they don't get much bigger. And if you want the satisfaction of working hard to earn your trophy, hike up those mountains and kill a tahr. NZ offers a wide variety of species to hunt, in an absolutely breathtakingly beautiful environment. The weather was good - cool but not cold. The people are friendly and the food is excellent. It was a great family trip.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
I enjoyed this hunt with my two sons, Justin (16) and Nick (13). My wife also accompanied us as an observer. This is a great family destination hunt. The Stew Point Lodge is super comfortable and was a great place for my wife to relax for a week while the boys and I hunted. Nick was able to stay in the lodge while Justin and I climbed the mountains after tahr. Nick and I both took fantastic red deer. The red deer hunting is not particularly challenging. Mostly we drove roads and spotted deer on the lower slopes of the mountains, then planned a stalk once we had found deer we liked. Some relatively modest climbing and hiking was involved to get in position to shoot, but once deer were spotted and selected there was little doubt about the outcome. Nick shot his deer at about 250 yards. I shot mine at about 100. Justin's tahr was a different story. The tahr are much higher on the mountains, and getting to them is a challenge. We spent hours climbing once we had spotted tahr from creek bottoms, and once up where the tahr were, it was no safe bet the tahr would still be there. If they were, and they heard or smelled or saw you, they were able to bail off the mountain and down into dark ravines where we stood no chance of finding them again. We spent two full days hunting tahr, and my legs were sore. Going up I was panting and my muscles hurt. Sidehilling was hard on my ankles. And coming back down my muscles were fine but my knees hurt. Neither the guide nor the 16 year old hunter showed any adverse effects, however. Justin killed his tahr with one perfectly placed shot at just under 300 yards. The tahr rolled toward us a bit, but it still took 30-45 minutes for us to climb up to him, at times through chest deep snow. We decided not to bring our rifles on this hunt; the first time we have ever done that. We followed this trip with a trip through Australia and had many flights. Given all the flights on the trip I decided to use rifles provided by our guides and leave my own at home. This was a great decision. We were provided with two good rifles to use - a Steyr Mannlicher and a Winchester Model 70, both in 7mm Remington Magnum. Both were in good condition and we had no problems at all. Our guides were Colin Rayner and James Mitchell. Both worked very hard for us and were excellent judges of trophy quality. They did a nice job adjusting their routines to fit those of younger hunters and the boys enjoyed their company. Colin learned some new video game skills from Nick. The last day we were there, Colin and Mitch arranged for a pig hunt for the boys and each of them shot a big sow. Our cook was Debbie, and she not only cooked excellent meals but also did a wonderful job keeping my wife entertained, taking her to town for some shopping and engaging in daily girl talk while fixing meals. All in all Kiwi Safaris is a first class operation and I would highly recommend it, especially to anyone hunting as a family.

Mike Freeman runs a good outfit, offering good hunting for the cost. Peter Harding is a first rate guide. I'd recommend this bowhunt to anyone who likes spot and stalk. Given that we were past the rut("roar"), I was dubious about success. But took a very nice stag the first afternoon, so my misgivings were misplaced.

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt: I happened to arrive when fog and rain covered the mountains after 7 weeks of clear, dry, drought-like weather (weather cleared just as I left - bad luck)! So I had to bow hunt Tahr under wire.
Highlights of Hunt: Came across a gold+ Red Stag whose antler had broken off in the skull during rut fighting. Antler was still dragging by its skin (although it fell off during the hunt) Outfitter allowed me to bowhunt the stag at a reduced price (it would have died a slow painful death in a few weeks). It was a memorable stalk and bowhunt.
Equipment Recommendations: Terrain is very steep (steeper than for most mountain hunts) requiring good boots.
Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? yes
Why? Operation is professionally run but very large. Clientele are very high end. Accommodation and service are luxurious and being upgraded (first season at a new lodge). It is not my normal cup of tea (prefer small family run outfits and don't really need the large scale luxury). But for hunters looking for comfort and willing to accept the impersonal parts that come with working with a large organization, the hunt can be recommended.

Major Game Animals Taken: Deer, Red - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: Silver Medal.
Elk, Wapiti (See Elk) - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: Gold Medal.

Tahr, Himalayan - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: 12 inch bull.
Deer, Sika - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: Trophy.
Game Sought But Not Taken:
Game Condition Comments: Elk, wapiti and red stag in rut or roar and losing weight. Surprised not more broken horns. Better capes on tahr in June, but Ian found me a nice blonde one. Told sika about one month from rut. Plenty of forage and water available to game, so if undisturbed by man or rut, can shop around a little with good chance of relocating if you came back.

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt: None at all. I had seen a Kiwi guide hunting Colorado and it scared me a little so I sandbaged my physical abilities before I went. Ian the guide was great and did not hurt me, thar hunting surprised me as to how much fun it is. From the time Mike Freeman met me at the airport to Pam and Mark Waste's tucker to Ian's skillful guiding, everything was as advertised. I am very happy.
Highlights of Hunt:
Equipment Recommendations: Best optics - for fall. I needed more lightweight rain proof and less Colorado cold as crap stuff.
Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes
Why? Great hunt, game is here. Although the stags are behind fence on 8,000 acres of steep hills at Sherwood. It is spot and stalk hunting that is pretty fair Dinkum. Tahr is free range in masty places. Chamois very wary and very small. 20 yard shots.

Hunter Name: W.A. (Billy) Attebury

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
I recently returned from two weeks hunting in Australia and New Zealand. I booked through Trophy Connection (Cody Wyoney) and hunted the Water Valley Ranch with Darryl Bell of Jamie Bell Safaris. This was my second hunt in Australia, the previous with Bob Penfold for water buffalo and boar.

On this hunt July 15 through August 3rd, I hunted for rusa, sambar and Chital in Australia and highly recommend both Trophy Connection and Jamie Bell Safaris. I have hunted Africa 11 times, North and South America almost 100, Europe, Asia, Turkey, etc., and I have never seen so much "shootable" game running virtually wild (the station is over 20 square miles) except in Africa. Also, for the hunter who is going for his SCI Diamond (South Pacific) and who cannot squeeze in New Caledonia, this station has some excellent rusa.

Another species that I rarely hear about, yet to me is one of the "premier" animals to hunt, is the sambar. I saw many decent "heads," but for 2001 and beyond this area should provide an excellent opportunity for several 27 inches and with some "bulk." My sambar was just over 25 inches but had a great deal of mass. Sambar do not "give you much," being very elusive, so even though these 20 square miles is technically a game ranch, the quality of hunting (selection, stalking, etc.) is, in my opinion, outstanding.

One minor point of interest for your readers, Australian Chital are not (at least for the most part) equal to our Florida/Texas introduced Chital. I mention this because I was a bit disappointed at my Chital (estimate 130 inches) until I checked the record books (there is no comparison to South Pacific vs. U.S.).

From Australia, I flew to Christ Church, New Zealand to hunt with Peter Chamberlain for wapiti, wild goat, fallow and boar. I had hunted with Peter (Kiwi Safaris) in 1995 for Tahi red stag and chamois - getting a Gold Stag and Silver Tahi and chamois.

Peter is a real pro, and I believe the best guide I've hunted with, including the late Finn Aagaard. On this hunt, I took a 413 7/8 (SCI) wapiti, a gold medal top ten goat and a gold medal fallow. We worked hard, doing a great deal of climbing and hiking, wading streams, etc. The wapiti is over 65 inches wide, and both main beams exceed 55 inches. It is a typical 7x7, very light (blond) in color.

Peter faxed me with the score, which I will submit upon receiving. It may be the new No. 1, certainly in the top 5.

I then flew to the North Island to hunt sika with Adrian Moody - another solid professional. After three days of constant rain, we got a decent shot at what turned out to be an 8-point, 134-inch sika. Anyone who is interested in my evaluations of these hunts and guides, please ask them to call.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
In regard to my hunt which was recently conducted with Mike Freeman of Kiwi Safaris, the hunt was excellent. Game obtained was chamois, red stag, tahr, and fallow deer. Accomodations were excellent. The hunting team also provided a guide service for my wife and several of our friends. All in all, I recommend the hunt highly to anyone who would be interested in a New Zealand hunt
