I have not seen too much about Australia in The Hunting Report, so I thought that I'd give you an update on the recent trip there, taken by me and my wife, Arlene.
During the course of over three weeks, we hunted with three different outfitters, starting in Queensland and ending in the Northern Territory. In Queensland we hunted with Kingham Safaris, long known for dominating the SCI Record Book, with respect to the species on their property, Arlene's Moluccan Rusa Deer expected to be the new number five, while my non-typical Moluccan Rusa Deer should be the new number six. I give very high marks to the operation run by the Webster family and to the quality and quantity of trophy animals on their property. The food and accommodations were of very high quality.
I can report that Australia is not a firearms-friendly country. It is difficult for residents to own firearms, and equally difficult for non-resident hunters to bring their own firearms. To their credit, Kingham Safaris has permit packages that are made available to all their clients well in advance of their departure from the US. That said, it took me many hours to complete the forms, get additional passport photos taken, and get "good guy" letters from my local Sheriff's Department. Equally onerous was the visit to Autralia Customs at the Sydney Airport, where we needed to complete export and restricted goods permits before boarding our outbound flight to Los Angeles. I would caution any hunters traveling with their own firearms to get to the airport, as we did, a least four hours before their flight departure.

Getting both animals after long initial and secondary stocks. Tremendous luck played into getting the sambar after the initial shot. |

Take enough cloths for the trip. No way to do any laundry due to water levels, bring enough cloths for the duration. Be prepared for cool mornings and hot afternoons. Light boots work very well here, no need for gortex while I was there. |

Andrew and Bill Webster went above and beyond to make sure I had fun the entire time. Given the great hunting on Marble Island, they could have slacked and it still would have been great, but these guys just don't stop. They are honest and are very good hunters. The island itself is challenging with half being open areas and half being sparse to dense brush & trees. There are many Axis on the Island as well. Camp is a nice beach cottage. Hunter has his own room & bath with shower. Common area is comfortable and is very nice to come back to for lunch and at the end of the day. They also have full facilities for freezing the cape before having it fleshed and salted at their main camp. Very nice set up, with all equipment needed to handle the cape and trophy. I re-booked for a blackpowder hunt for Javen and Axis before I left camp.

Just a great, relaxed hunt. There were no problems and plenty of animals. The Websters are typically nice, outgoing and friendly Australians. They did everything possible to ensure that we had a good time and took exactly the animals we wanted. Alternative weapons do not phase them; I stalked and killed a water buffalo and a Javan Rusa with a crossbow. |

My first week of hunting was in Queensland on Marble Island, a picturesque spot not far from the Great Barrier Reef. I took two rusa deer here. One was a Javan rusa that should make the top two SCI. The other was a Mollocan rusa that also would have scored in the top two had he had not broken 4½ inches off his G-2 during the rut. Nevertheless, he should score in the top six SCI. In addition to the rusa, the island also has axis and sambar deer. There is also great fishing available here.
My PH's worked to get me the best quality animals we could find. They never tried to persuade me to take a representative animal or shoot the first good animals I saw. We patiently hunted until I was able to take the ones I wanted for my trophy room. Australia is undoubtedly the best kept secret in the hunting world. If you want to hunt super-quality trophies and see abundant wildlife, this is the place to go.

The hunt takes place on Webster family farm (Kingham) two hours out of Brisbane and you are guided by Bill Webster and his two sons, Andrew and James. Your accommodations are in a cabin on site which has all conveniences and food is served by Lindy Webster in her kitchen. Hunting has been conducted on the farm for fifteen years while the ongoing cattle operation started in 1959.
There are large numbers of Javan rusa, axis, fallow, red stags and black bucks roaming the woods and fields. The hog deer, moluccan and sambar are not plentiful but you do get to pick and choose between several animals. All of the Websters are very familiar with the deer movement and excellent judges of trophy size.
This family run operation is first class in every respect and you become one of the family for the duration of your hunt.
The hunting is by spot and stalk but does require some 200-yard plus shooting. The daily rain prevented me from seeing and taking a larger sambar.
I highly recommend this trip.
