Sought But Not Taken: |
Wildebeest - Availability: Niassa; only moderate numbers in the area. Saw several, but not a big enough bull. I was aware of this before the hunt. |

Suni - Availability: Livingstone; Very abundant. I missed an easy shot, then ran out of time. Nobody's fault but mine. |

Condition Comments: |
This area and operator have a well deserved excellent reputation for excellent game populations. Game was concentrated around water access in the area. In addition to the game I sought there were high populations of sable, elephant, hartebeest, waterbuck, lion and leopard. Hippo and crocodile were also available. |

Comments: |
SAA lost my gun on the return flight. It arrived in NY the day after I did. I would like to take this opportunity to credit Steve Turner, Travel With Guns, who I purchased my airline tickets through, as being absolutely fantastic in this situation. It took him nearly a month and several hundred dollars to get my gun through US customs in NY. The amount of paperwork and phone calls were overwhelming. Because I was in the field upon returning to Alaska, I would not have been able to accomplish this and customs threatened to destroy my gun if the situation was not resolved in a relatively short time. SAA did reimburse me for the costs involved. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
There were no problems on this hunt. My reserved guide had been injured in an accident previous to my arrival and Paul Wellok stepped in and did an exceptional job. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Highlights were taking a 41 inch plus, heavy hard boss buffalo, being charged to less than 10 feet by a cow elephant, finding two mature male lions on a kill, having an exceptionally large bodied blue bull eland walk by at less than 20 yards a couple days after taking my excellent 37" bull and taking a great variety of animals. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Being from Alaska I am not used to the heat. It was basically 100 degrees every day. I purchased Columbia clothing through Cabelas that was a lifesaver. I got the insect repellant pants and the sunblock shirts. Both of these garments have such a tight weave that bugs, specifically tse tse flies cannot bite through them. They are also extremely light weight and dry out very quickly. They are strongly recommended for any hot weather hunt. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
yes |
| Why? |
This was an outstanding experience in every way. The only concern was that multiple client groups may be in the same , extremely comfortable, base camp at the same time. It is a very large concession and using satellite camps may be beneficial. |

I'm happy to report that there is much more available at Kambako Safaris than just huge elephants! My wife and I hunted with Jumbo Moore and his outfit in October, 2009, and had a fabulous time. The location of their concession, on the edge of the Niassa Reserve, provides them with an amazing amount of game. Their trophy price list shows 21 species, and my wife and I saw hundreds of every one of those species during our 11 day hunt! The best part is that the game is hunted so little that the herds just stand by the road when you drive by. We often saw herds of 40 - 60 animals. I have hunted numerous times in Africa, in 10 different countries, and have not seen the size of herds we saw on this hunt, except for a few species in Zambia and Tanzania. The sightings are aided by two significant hunting practices: No shooting from the vehicle, and very little hunting of the herds. They hunt the lone bulls that have separated from the herds. Their philosophy is that if the herds are undisturbed, they will stay in their concession, and the lone bulls will stay there too when they separate. I saw eland over 40 inches, and buffalo over 44 inches, including several in the skinning shed. The camp is the best we have stayed in anywhere, except Esperanza in RSA. It is downright amazing that they have built such a great place so far out in wild Africa. The lodge and setting are beautiful. The hunter's cabins are huge and comfortable. The group of Professional Hunters and camp staff were the best we have had anywhere in the world. I have been on nearly 100 guided hunts in the past 10 years. Of all those guides, our PH at Kambako, Stu Taylor, was also the best I have ever had. His personal tracker was the second best we have ever had (but just barely 2nd!). I had the impression that all of the PH's in this camp would have been far above average. I highly recommend this hunt to anyone that has been to Africa at least once. Basically, you experience the kind of game volume found in South Africa or Namibia, but, in a truly wild setting. I have taken over 100 different species of animals in Africa ( all with handguns ), and I still found new species here, and had a new experience. The best part is that their daily rates are only slightly higher than RSA and Namibia, but you get a true "full bag safari" in a wild part of Africa. The cost/value definitely beats Tanzania and Zambia, and is light years better than Ethiopia! I have to admit that we were fortunate to see so many animals because we hunted the end of October, when the brush is most beat down. The area is mostly covered with thick brush and trees, which would make low visibility earlier in the year. The catch with October is that it is hot. However, my wife and I usually hunt Africa in October and November because we are from Phoenix, AZ, and we prefer the warmer temps. If you want a true "Hunt of a Lifetime", this is it!

Suni - Availability: Although we tried vey hard and invested a lot of hunting time we had just no luck to get one - very difficult to see these little beasts in thick cover. |

Wildebeest - Availability: Niassa wildebeest. We saw only one herd in hunting block B where they were not allowed to hunt them. In hunting block Coutada Nicage where they were allowed to hunt we did not come across one single wildebeest although we drove and walked a lot. Checking remaining waterholes, we did not find any tracks and droppings. |
|
Eland - Availability: Single big bulls were very wild and always running and they never stopped. Tracking very difficult on dry and hard ground. We had three goes without success. |
|
Bushpig - Availability: We saw three times these animals early in the morning, always wild and running, no chance to get a shot at one of them. |

Hyena - Availability: One can only hope and pray to see one by sheer luck and get a lucky shot. |

Great time of year to be there, not too hot, game abundant if you hunt hard. Old animals of all species, I handled 95x92 and 85x84 pound ivory taken by Russian hunters in early July. Primary reason for this trip was sable and buffalo, extended to lion half way through 20 day hunt. Secondary reason was to see this area and perhaps one of the big elephant. We saw numerous 50 pounders, several to 70#. Magnificent to behold and worth the trip alone. Great people, great camp, great area. Consider staying at their beach house near Pemba to get over jet lag- white sand beach, shallow behind the reef, remote location just out of town, you will have run of the beatiful Indian Ocean. I'll go back with family. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
None, I would have stayed two months like my Aussie friend, Adam Christo, Cape buffalo enthusiast. Adam built the swimming pool and water filtration system for camp. We are all in his debt. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
John "Jumbo" Moore- managing partner, Stuart Taylor- PH, Johnny Johnson- PH, entire staff was great! nightly elephant raids on camp vegetable garden- and listening to Jumbo chastise them- just like they were his own kids. "no fire" 1 mile radius around camp, critters are calm. From porch of lodge any time of day- watching elephant, medium size crocs, hippo, waterbuck and kudu in and crossing wide shallow Lugenda River. Picking up 95# tusk. Never in my life thought I'd do that. I never thought I'd shoot a lion! This was an SCI auction hunt for sable and buffalo that I upgraded to a 20 day hunt. I found great animals within 10 days, all ready to go home when Stuart advised that Jumbo had a lion available. How could I pass that up?! Saw lots of tracks of BIG individual lion, eyed many young males, females and cubs. We were bird hunting last evening of hunt when the tracker spotted this old male- of course it was sunset on last day! |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Lots of close shots, open iron. Longest shot 150 yards for kudu. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
Yes |
| Why? |
Great animals, great people. Area is much like Texas hill country - granite outcrops, many dry riverbeds, riverine (thick) and lots and lots of mixed hardwood, open and dense country hunting. Easy walking, hot midday. Hot as hell in October and November. |

I was pleased to see your report on Kambako Safaris in Mozambique. I hunted with Jumbo Moore in Zimbabwe in 2001 and had a wonderful first safari, taking buffalo and a grab bag of excellent plains game including a Livingston eland, kudu, sable and zebra.
My daughter Annie graduated from High School in 2006 and we hunted with Stu Taylor at the first Lugenda Camp in Mozambique for 3 weeks in hot August weather. Stu and the other PH, Johnnie Johnson, took us under their wings and showed us a fabulous time.
The area was certainly game rich with lots of young antelope in the areas around the river. Elephant and buffalo sightings were a daily occurrence (many elephants in the over 60 weight class).
As you know, Americans cannot bring ivory out of Mozambique. Annie was able to collect two trophy impala, kudu, sable and a beautiful Boheme zebra and I got a big Defassa waterbuck and bushpig.
The campsite over the Lugenda was gorgeous but I understand it has undergone a substantial upgrade since 2006. There is also now a fancy beach side hotel in Pemba to unwind from the jet lag prior to jump off into the bush.
I had always enjoyed reading of the grand tradition old Safaris in Mozambique in the 70s and 80s and this trip certainly met all expectations.
Big Mo is back as a great safari destination.
