Just thought I'd give you a quick report on our September 2010 trip to Mongolia. We booked with Juulchin travel through Bob Kern. Everything went ok, food was decent, (but not great) camps were fairly comfortable and staff were accommodating.
I shot a good altai ibex (43 inches), a very good Mongolian gazelle, and a small Gobi ibex. Overall, I'd recommend this hunt, with a few caveats.
The guide I had for Gobi ibex had no clue what a trophy ibex was. He even wanted me to shoot a female.
As I'd never seen an ibex before, I had little idea what to look for, as the guides there were very competent.
For whatever reasons, the Mongolians think you need to shoot gazelles from the vehicle. Of course this isn't true, just hunt them like you would pronghorn, but expect an argument.
Be prepared for lots of bouncing around in the truck. There are few roads and distances are huge. We had planned to fly between the different areas, however it just didn't work out.

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
This was for a Gobi Argali Sheep taken in the South Gobi Desert of Mongolia. I did initially order a satellite phone from The Hunting Report but found, after it came, I had great difficulty putting it into my luggage. Consequently, I did not take it with me and sent it back. Fortunately, we did not have any problems on this hunt requiring that phone.
There was a report in the Hunting Report, a few months ago, by a hunter who took a Gobi Argali Sheep in the South Gobi. I am not too sure if it was the same area where I hunted or not. He indicated he had seen, on the first day, between six and eight hundred sheep and then moved to another area were there were even more sheep. He claimed the sheep were skittish but ultimately, after six days, he took his sheep and considered the hunt an easy one. He indicated they were small and by good chance he got something over 40 inches.
My hunt was somewhat different from his. I took this hunt with a friend if mine, by the name of Dr. Chris Bieniek. We hunted in the South Gobi near the village of Manali, which was about 40 miles to the north of us. We drove about 12 hours south from Ulaanbaatar to reach the hunt area. Most of our hunting took place on a small mountain range to the south of our camp, approximately 20 miles away. The doctor took a Gobi Argali with horns of 42 X 43 and mine was 49 X 50. Also, we both took black tail gazelle, which are classified in the SCI record book as Hiller Goitered Gazelle. I also obtained a gray wolf. We did not see an awful lot of sheep. I would estimate both of us saw approximately four or five rams and perhaps 20 or 30 ewes at the most over the course of seven days of hunting. The mountains were not very high but quite steep in places. The hunt was conducted with Mercedes Benz Jeeps, which is one hell of a vehicle. You would not believe the places in the mountains they drove us to. The rest of the time we had to walk. The few other rams we did see, we estimated to be between 42 and 47 inches in the length of the horns. We observed two sets of horns from sheep that had been killed by wolves or by natural causes and scored those horns, one having its longest horn at 45 inches and the other at 47 inches.
The problems of the hunt were as follows. You indicated you would want any information if we had any problems with the airlines, We did not have any problems with Air China, as such, except for one incident, which was relevant to the boarding at JFK airport in New York. When I brought my gun and duffle bag to check in, I indicated to the clerk that my bullets were in the duffle bag. He did not seem to take any notice about it or want to see them and consequently, the bag was checked in and sent down to be loaded onto the plane. The gun was held and had to be cleared by the Customs officers. When the Customs officers came, they wanted to know where my duffle bag was with the bullets and I told them. It took almost two hours to retrieve that duffle bag. Consequently, when we left on the plane, guess what - the duffle bag did not show up in Beijing, China and I did not obtain it until 2 days later after we arrived in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. My suggestion is that any hunter checking in their luggage, should make sure the clerk knows there are bullets in your bag and that it has to be checked by the Customs officials along with your rifle before it is checked in and loaded on the plane. Also, when traveling from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, I would highly suggest you purchase business class tickets as then you can bring 40 kilos of luggage at no extra charge instead of only 20 kilos if you purchase an economy ticket. The difference in the cost of the ticket is approximately $300.00 per person and is well worth it, sitting up front and having your entire luggage come through with out any additional cost. The additional charge for anything over 20 kilos in economy and over 40 kilos in business in $4.00 per kilo.
We stayed in the Edelweiss Hotel in Ulaanbaatar, which is the same place Juulchin has been using since 1996. There is one great thing about traveling in Mongolia; you most certainly will lose weight. The food sucks! They feed you only in that one restaurant at the Hotel, before and after the hunt, and it is a rarity that you can get away from there and if you do, I still have not found food that was up to what I consider decent quality. During the stop over in Beijing, China, the food is exquisite.
This is my forth time to Mongolia on various hunts that I have taken there since 1996. I find it becomes easier, with the exception of problems created by the manager of the Hunting Division of Juulchin in Ulaanbaatar, Mr. Bayasgalan. On our return to the United States, when we had to get to the airport for the flight from Ulaanbaatar to Beijing, it was not until the very last minute that we received the veterinary certificates for the animals we obtained. Not only that, he put both of our names on one Cites certificate, instead of separate ones, and the Fish and Wildlife Agency in the US are still holding out trophies until we obtain the correct ones from Mongolia, While we were in Ulaanbaatar, after the hunt, we attempted to contact that manager may times in order to obtain our correct papers and were continually frustrated. They are not very responsive, but I think this was just the cause of that one manager working for Juulchin.
I do not know if I can handle any more sheep hunts, as I am 76 years old now. I am running out of gas, but I most certainly enjoy every moment of the hunt, as I have in the past.

I just finished my second World Slam (Ovis) and second Grand Slam (ISHA) by hunting Siberia for snow sheep in August and Mongolia for the Hangai.
In Mongolia I had a goal of a over 50 inch ram. After passing up numerous 40-43 inch rams, I took a 46 inch ram because the guide said it was the best I could expect. I was told it was the best they had taken from the Hangai area this year. The rumor was that they would close the area for three years. I think they should because I sure didn't see any of the 50-54 inch type rams hunters were taking from there.
Per Ovis, the Hungai is a different specimen and, as a result, also gave me my 20th different species of sheep. Per ISHA, it is considered a Gobi Desert ram. Either way it counted for both organizations and completed the second slams in both cases.
I went nuts in 1998 and set out to get my first Slam completed. I got hooked on sheep hunting again and decided to do the second Slams. It was a lot of sheep hunting in a four-year period but it was totally gratifying. Especially since it covered the age span of 62 to 66 years. The main thing I noticed, however, is that God has made the mountains taller and steeper in the last few years.

Condition Comments: |
My hunting partner and I both had the good fortune of taking exceptional animals throughout the entire hunt. However, we also had ample opportunity to take fine animals that may very well be considered excellent trophy quality. Throughout the early part of the hunt for each species, we were clearly encouraged not to take some animals that we would have taken. The comment was that we would find better. I thought they did an excellent job in guiding and knowing animals on the hoof. |

Could have done better on the gazelles. Don't rush the hunt, there are thousands (East African volume). Concentrate on the Ibex first. The Gobi area is more like Montana than Arizona. Dry plains and modest mountains that are green. No trees of any consequence. The nomads are sparse but everywhere, living in completely traditional ways on the plains. Excellent game condition. Thousands of gazelle on plains and abundant ibex on the mountains, but you'll have to climb to see them. They are smart, highland animals. |

Mongolians are mentally developed and organized. I was impressed. It's just that they have been isolated for so long and they have suffered from neo-colonialism. Now they are free and working hard to build their country.

I wanted to give you a bit of an in depth report on my High Altai argali sheep hunt in Mongolia. If you want to make some of this your hunt report of the month, I am not opposed to it. You can edit whatever you would like to for political reasons so as not to offend anybody.
For the year 1999, there were 45 permits for argali sheep. Fifteen went for High Altai argali, fifteen for Hungay argali, and fifteen for Gobi argali. Juulchin ended up with roughly 50 percent of all argali sheep permits. About half of the sheep permits that they ended up with were directly purchased from the government, as was their allocation, and the other 50 percent were purchased from other smaller or newer companies in Mongolia who were awarded permits to purchase from the government, but then found themselves unable to sell these permits to either hunters or outfitters. My hunt was arranged by Wes Vining of the Trophy Connection, and they do their booking exclusively with Juulchin.
I was met at the airport in Ulan Bataar by Batsuk, who is the manager of hunting for Juulchin. The vehicle of transport was a 1999 Mercedes Benz Jeep most of the time, and a 1999 Ford Explorer XLT the other part of the time. My hunt was based out of Hovd. My guide was the world renowned Adiya. We hunted in the area of the Altai mountain range known as Muust. Mr. Adiya brought along two drivers, two female cooks, and packed our gear into two relatively new Toyota Land cruisers. Our fly camp equipment consisted of two new German-made one-man tents, and one German-made two-man tent for the female cooks. The drivers slept in the cars. We were assisted at fly camp by a local herdsman and his son, and utilized their horses for the majority of our hunting. The horses were strong, equipped with good saddles, and as well mannered as a Mongolian horse could be. The local Mongolian hunter and his son were both keen eyed, extremely helpful and attentive, and hard working in the assistance of my trophies. They stayed up past midnight on the day I harvested my ibex to completely flesh the hide, turn the lips and ears, and boil the skull.
Let me make some general comments which you might find useful for your newsletter.
I approached my Mongolian High Altai argali sheep hunt with some reservations. I had recently heard disparaging comments by several booking agents and hunters about both the quality and quantity of sheep remaining in Mongolia. I had also heard negative reports about the quality of the guides, the status of the vehicles, and the poor equipment utilized on the horses. In addition to that, I had the unusual burden of not knowing how well I would tolerate my first sheep hunt following heart bypass surgery little more than a year previously. To say I had a little anxiety and nervousness about this hunt would be a profound understatement.
My hunt was arranged for me by Wes Vining of the Trophy Connection through Juulchin. Under Soviet control, Juulchin was the Governments' Bureau of Tourism, but since the fall of the Soviet Union, it has been privatized, and now operates as an independent company. While it is only awarded approximately 20 percent of the official government permits for Mongolia, with the other 80 percent going to a few companies, it is able to purchase almost 25 percent of these permits awarded to its' competition from these smaller companies who are unable to sell their government sheep permits to hunters or booking agents. Thus, Juulchin controls nearly 50 percent of the hunting permits for sheep in Mongolia.
The arrangements, personal service, and attentiveness afforded me by Juulchin through their game manager, Batsuk, and my personal guide, the internationally famous Adiya, were first class. All the vehicles used in my hunt were new or nearly new Mercedes Benz Jeeps or Toyota Land cruisers. The fly camp tents and ancillary equipment were also new or less than three years old and all in working order and plentiful. The two cooks provided me with exceptionally outstanding food to the point that I had to ask them to serve me less. I regularly enjoyed omelets for breakfast, fresh homemade soup prepared twice daily, fresh salads at every meal, a variety of main courses including poultry, fish, and meats, and fresh fruits for dessert. The horses were well mannered, with excellent saddles.
All of that is nice, but of course, the most important thing would be the quantity and quality of game. I was probably most fortunate that Adiya was my guide. He had been in the mountains for nearly two months prior to my arrival and had well-scouted multiple areas in the Altai range. It is this type of preparation that enabled me to observe and study more than 75 rams and 50 ibex in approximately seven days of hunting. You can't shoot them if you don't know where they are.
Our weather was horrible for the first five days, with constant rain, which caused us to be able to hunt very little. In the last four days of my hunt, I was blessed to be able to harvest a 41-inch ibex, which were plentiful in the region which I hunted. And most importantly, I was able to harvest a 56 1/2 inch ram with nearly 20-inch bases, that was 13 years old and heavily broomed. Almost all of my hunting was done at just under 12,000 feet. We would take horseback to approximately 11,500 feet and proceed on foot for the remainder of the day.
Mike Carpenter with U.S. Fish and Wildlife was most helpful in forwarding my CITES permit to Los Angeles so I could bring my trophy back home with me. My processing by the three Fish and Wildlife agents in Los Angeles was smooth and a pleasant experience. All three agents were most courteous and helpful.
So would I go back to Mongolia again? I am already studying my calendar in hopes of pursuing a Hungay argali opportunity.
