Condition Comments: |
Johan has a large area and many ranches to hunt. Many ranchers call him to take out problem animals as well. Good opportunity to take the small cats in this agricultural area. Lots of grain fields in the Free State, so there are many rodents and good food sources for the small cats. |

British Airways lost the case with our camera equipment. We were filming an upcoming episode of Wild Outdoor Adventure TV series so we needed to rent video and audio equipment for a week until they located the missing large pelican eqiupment case. |

If you are looking for the small cats, Johan is the best in the business. He also is one of the rare houndsmen to hunt leopard with dogs in Namibia. Quite the exciting adrenalin rush there. It is a dangerous sport and Johan has been personally mauled two different times by leopards. |

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
The dogs are malnourished and in poor condition. I have come to know at least five other hunters with similar suspicions my caracal had the classic (caged) markings: worn nails, scarred face, etc. I shot four cats in less than 36 hours - almost unbelievable. Mr. Strydom circulated an email requesting financial assistance for a crisis involving his daughter - I have come to find out there was no incident and several people sent this man several thousand dollars. I cannot recommend this outfitter further. I have done a reasonable amount of diligence and am confident in my convictions.
Rebuttal from Johan Strydom
I just returned today from a long hunt, sorry for the delay to respond. Thanks for this mail about Mr. Randy Pretzer. It is a shock to my system that he wrote a report like this to you about me. This is my reasons why.
1. I caught the most cats of all outfitters in Africa in a season. Please look at the new SCI record book under Caracal, Serval + African Wildcat. I own 40 hounds divided in 3 packs to accommodate all my hunters. Will I keep 40 hounds, feed them, pay vet bills, etc. to hunt caged cats. The answer is no, no, no! Anyone can hunt caged cats with 2 dogs. I am not in that game.
2. I am very ethical about my hunting methods. I have never and will never hunt caged cats. It make me mad and furious to be accused of this! I hunt on a 200 square km area for these cats. I rotate every area each year -- hunt a area only once in 3 years -- to keep my populations up high. I relocate cats into areas where cats have been wiped out by poison, farmers traps, poachers dogs etc for the past 11 years now. I am a nature lover and take great care of all my species in my area on my own cost. I have cats to hunt IN THE WILD now, where there were non 4 years back? They relocate animals in all parts of the world, to be hunted in a few years when the populations have established.
3. Mr Pretzer said that he will not recommend me to friends in his report ??? THIS IS A LIE, AS HE GAVE MY ADDRESS TO 2 DIFFERENT OPERATIONS THAT HE HUNTED WITH. One is John X Safari`s where he have hunted after me and another to a Zambian outfitter. They have both booked with me as a result of Mr. Pretzer`s good recommendation of me to them? Will he gave my name as a good outfitter to 2 of his outfitters if he have hunted caged cats. The answer is no! Strange is it? He were very happy when he left my camp.
4. Mr. Pretzer wounded a Bush Duiker + Genet cat on the same day that we could not find. I went back the next day after he left for John X Safari`s with my hounds and have recovered both his animals for him I called him on the phone while he were in transit with my employee the Cape and notified him about the 2 animals we found with the help of my hounds. He have paid both of the animals immediately and were very happy and pleased we found it for him. I did not do the aiming or shooting on this 2 animals --- Mr. Pretzer did. How can he said he will not get his animals? I have over two hundred animals in my trophy room. I did not need his / nor do I want to get his money cheaply. He shot them, wounded them and we did a lot of work to recover it for him.
5. He have hunted out of a 4 star rated camp, / rated each year by the South African tourism counsel. We have all new Toyota land Cruisers in camp. I caught about 70 cats each season for clients with hounds so how can my quality as a outfitter be fair ?????
6. I hold the world record for Caracal, Serval, + African Wildcat in one season for my clients during 2004 and still are in the SCI top 5. That take a good outfitter to do that. We have shot 3 cats in 24 hours with Mr. Pretzer. Does that mean it have to be caged cats ???? The answer is no. I have my trackers out 3 days before his arrival and during his hunt to scout very hard for tracks, -- that is why Mr. Pretzer were very lucky & successfull to get all his cats on a short hunt and me hounds of extremely high quality. There are clients that miss out on some of the cats, because it is hunting and not collecting.
7. That is why I love hound hunting / It is because of the success rate, at least 90% success to get all a clients small cats on one hunt. I am proud of myself!
8. Mr Pretzer have offered me on numerous accounts to use one of his company`s DODGE trucks as a guest while I am in the Dallas are. I have appreciate it a lot, but have never make use of his offer. Will he do it to some one that let him hunt caged cats
*** RANDY BE ASHAMED OF YOUR SELF MY FRIEND. YOU PROMOTE ME TO YOUR PREVIOUS OUTFITTERS TO HUNT WITH ME, AND THEN YOU STAB ME UNNECESSARY IN THE BACK, AND THAT AFTER WE HAVE WORKED OUR BUDS OFF FOR YOU !!!!!!!!!!!
Please be carefull what you publish. Some hunters can bite like a very venomous snake -- Mamba -- and its bite can harm you tremendously.

Attached is a documentation package regarding a massive over charge swindle carried out by Johan Strydom during our 2004 safari. We have made extensive attempts to collect this money and so far have simply received nice promises and no commitment or repayments. We want his actions to be made public to prevent further behavior of this manner in the hunting community.
Thank you for your support in this matter.

VAT @ 14 percent US $4530 could be deducted if proof can be provided VAT was actually paid on this safari.
We contracted for 14 days of hunting, and we understand your standard package for leopard with hounds is priced at $11500 which includes 10 days at $350 a day PH fee for dogs $2000, fee for transport dogs $2000 and trophy fee of $4000.
This reconciliation has been reviewed by our expert representative matter and is factual for this hunt and considered very generous.
We have been very generous covering air and hotel for Jerry and Syd Meyers, your invited guests. They are our friends and booked this hunt, but were there for familiarization and for hound evaluation/consultation.
Rebuttal from Johan Strydom
I booked Mr. Tibby and his wife at SCI Show during 2004. They have brought with them two couples of observers/photographic. I gave them my price list as I will fax to you and I have insisted on a contract between us, but he didn't want one. On my pricelist it said very clearly that Prices are subjected without prior notice of the hunt due to certain factors.
Mr. Tibby have decided on animals that he want to shoot while he were here with the pricelist in hand. On the last day of the hunt I gave him his bill. He have over looked it and we changed a few prices as discussed between us at that moment until he were satisfied. Mr. Tibby then paid my invoice in full via check, travelers Checks and cash. They left very happy and so his two groups of observers.
Only after a few month Mrs. Tibby start to ask about a massive overcharge. I have explain to her on numerous times that there were no over charges and that she have miscalculation on her part. The Tibbys are very wealthy people and it seems to me that she wants every one to dance to her music. Well accordingly to me they paid me in full and left without any query, and therefore have no ground to stand on regarding a over charge.
It seems that they want to be charged in Rand like local people and not in US$. They were aware off all charges beforehand, like trophy fees, flights to hunting destinations, accommodations, travel fee for hounds etc with a price list in hand.
I will fax you proof of their payment to me in full with their permission. Why did they pay me if they have any queries? You only pay when you are happy with a bill.
Re-Rebuttal
Paul and I have tried to work with you, but you have chosen to ignore us and to defame us to others. Don Causey for one. I cannot understand how you could have said those horrible things about me. Did you not think that we would find out? Did you not think that we would ask for back up paperwork? You forgot to mention to him the additional $14,000 that you demanded that we pay for Gunthers, minutes before we were to leave his ranch. Jealousy is a very dangerous emotion. We have what we have because we worked for it and continue to. Our financial position is none of your business. When we chose to give to the poor in SA, and Namibia, it was our business. Remember Johan, what goes around, comes around. You will have to answer to a much greater source.
Johan, you did overcharge us with false fee's. You did not give the reduction for booking at SCI. We had two guests not four. Because of Paul's very generous and trusting nature, he loaned you an additional $10,000 that you promised to pay back within a few months. That never happened. You have never made any attempt. Dance to my music. How unconscionable of you. I had always asked you for a breakdown, starting in Namibia. You always made the false promise of having Celia put it together for us.
Paul and Phyllis Tibby

Veteran African hunters looking for a unique and different hunting experience should consider hunting in South Africa with Johan Strydom Safaris. Described (justifiably) as "Africa's Best Houndsman," Johan specializes in hunting Africa's small cats.
I made the decision to hunt with Johan both to enjoy the experience of hunting cats with dogs as well as to complete my SCI Grand Slam of Cats of the World. I am happy to report not only that I completed the Grand Slam, but that I had a most enjoyable and truly unique hunt.
Operating from Bethlehem, in the Free State, Johan maintains a kennel of close to 60 dogs - a mix of foxhounds, blueticks, plots, walkers, greyhounds and foxhound/walker crosses. The daily hunting procedure involves transporting a pack of ten dogs to neighboring ranches known to be the home of the three small cats which Johan pursues: Caracal, serval and African wildcat. In many cases these are ranches, which employ Johan for predator control, allowing him to exercise the dogs on a regular basis.
It was on a sheep ranch that I took my first cat - a caracal. Johan had explained to me that the rancher had lost numerous lambs to a "problem caracal", and was happy to have us on the property. On that morning we dispatched the dogs, and their two handlers, just after daybreak, when tracking conditions are at their best. Literally within the first 30 minutes of their planned sweep of the ranch, the handlers radioed the fact that the dogs had struck spoor. Within 15 minutes the cat was treed, and when we caught up with the dogs, the cacophony of barking dogs and the sight of a treed cat were not unlike my mountain lion hunting experiences.
When we had the cat on the ground, I was able to get a good look at this particular species. The caracal is often (mistakenly) referred to as an "African Lynx", given the tufts emanating from its ears. In fact, this cat is not related to the Lynx. As the largest of the small African cats, the weight of a good tom will generally be between 30 and 40 pounds.
A day later we succeeded in treeing an African wildcat, described by Johan as one of the biggest toms that he had taken. With its striped tail and striped legs, it will make a beautiful full mount. Interestingly, just after my return I heard from SCI that it will now accept African wildcats for record book entry.
I concluded my cat hunting by taking a beautiful serval on the same property that had yielded the African wildcat. With is dark gold and spotted coat, this cat is slightly smaller than the caracal, and generally tougher to tree. In fact, the serval will frequently go into a hole or rock outcropping, while being pursued by the dogs.
Johan's trophy fees for the caracal and the African wildcat are $550 each, while the fee for the serval is $700. Accommodations during my ten day hunt involved tow days in a bed and breakfast in Bethlehem (while my hunt overlapped with that of another hunter) and the balance in Johan's beautiful home in Bethlehem (which features and outstanding trophy room) Johan's daily rate of $350 includes pickup at Johannesburg International Airport (about 2 ½ hours from Bethlehem) and return to the airport at the end of the hunt.
For those hunters desiring to take additional trophies, Johan offers a full list of species, which may be hunted on various properties in the Free State and in KwaZulu-Natal. In my case, I took a beautiful red lechwe on a property not far from Bethlehem. Had I more time, I would have considered venturing into KwaZulu-Natal for a nyala, based upon the size and quality of the trophies that Johan had taken.
Finally, Johan hunts leopard with hounds in Namibia, and plans to conduct ten hunts there next season. He has teamed up with an experienced mountain lion hunter from Idaho (who has provided him with some dogs), in order to conduct these hunts.
In summary, hunting Africa's small cats with hounds is a unique and enjoyable experience. For a hunter who, like me, had already taken most of South Africa's big game, this is a wonderful way to get back into the country for a low-pressure, exciting hunting experience.
