This was an exceptional safari- not easy but big country and a PH that likes to walk. For those that disparage night hunting of lion from a blind- the absolute darkness, the tension of lion so close, the shot,growling- sounds of an animal having a hard time breathing then silence (you hear allot of sounds) and not knowing whether the lion is dead or just waiting for you will make you review your life! Lion died 53 yard from blind and just 80 yards after being shot. The safari area has exceptional numbers of sable, eland, waterbuck, Chobe bushbuck, bush pig and elephants. We saw several in the 50-65lb class and we weren't even looking for elephant-this is a hugh wilderness and 100 lbers have been taken in adjacent concessions in recent years. This concession has not been hunted for elephant. There are huntable numbers of hartebeest. Lion tracks were seen daily for 5 days (3 different big males) then not till end of safari. Lion travel up and down Lugenea and Luatize River systems. Tracking lion was difficult but possible particularily in burned or sandy areas other areas has grass or hard soils that precluded tracking. Several large crocs were seen. For those traveling to Mozambique take US currency with dates of 2006 or newer-airport departure taxes need to be paid in US Dollars and they will not accept any US Dollars older than 2006. Finally, I have hunted with three other excellent PHs (Tony Tomkinson, Jason Van Aarde and Craig Middleton) and Edwin Young was as good as any- a real professional with a happy staff and camp.

On the second morning while traveling looking for tracks that may have crossed the road in the night we saw this old bull (50+) years old. He was by himself and only viewable from the back of the truck. We glassed him and based on his ivory length,how both sides matched,and being unbroken Ronnie Crouse and I decided to get a closer look and see if an opportunity would present itself. We took a beautiful old bull ! What a way to start an elephant career.

This is my second elephant. My first elephant was shot in Tanzania in 2002. I shot this elephant on the second day of my hunt. It is probable that I might see a bigger elephant than the one I shot if I just took my time. Now, I have an excuse to go back to Botswana again to harvest a bigger one. Keep on upgrading.

Problems of Hunt: No problems whatsoever. The hunt exceeded my expectations. Highlights of Hunt: Saw bull elephants every day. 11th day we found a great shooter. I took a side brain shot at 12 paces. It was everything I had trained for. Equipment Recommendations: Practice shooting in the situations you anticipate. For me, this meant shooting off sticks and free hand. Gun was zeroed at 25 yards. Can't say enough about Monty Kalogeras and his safari shooting school. He put me in the exact situations I encounted. This provides great confidence. Make sure you're in good walking shape. Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? My PH, the Great Willy McDonald, took great care to produce my experience. He's knowledgeable and works very hard. I hope to hunt with Willy again and highly recommend him. A lot of fun too! Henny and Alta manage the camp and its staff superbly. Henny encourages the staff to strive for excellence in something they enjoy. The product is superb.

Problems of Hunt: I was disappointed with the experience and enthusiasm of my PH for elephant hunting but the two very experienced PHs in camp assisted, and though he tried hard and we were successful, this is the only portion of the experience that gives me any pause at all. Highlights of Hunt: Up close and personal on over 20 bulls, less than 20 yards. Seeing over 20 bulls per day. Having the good fortune to take a 67 pound monster on the last afternoon and a fine very mature buffalo on a traditional tracking hunt. Equipment Recommendations: You cannot lose weight in this camp with the menu even if you walk 20 km per day. And I mean an individual order each night, five-star menu. Beyond my wildest. Henny you're too much! Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? Magnificent animals and super areas, animals calm and unstressed or spooky. The best camp and ammenities in my extensive African experience and I thought all of them were first class, but this is another step above.

Two pieces of advice. 1. On the return trip don't take the 3 pm flight from Maun to Joberg if your flight home departs at 7 pm. They check your rifles twice in Joberg and that took two hours. 2. Problems of Hunt: Absolutely none. Highlights of Hunt: Johan Calitz is the most professional hunting company I have hunted with worldwide. Camps were 4 star, equipment was the best money can buy. Game areas were abundant with wildlife. John Calitz made all possible efforts to accomadate his clients and ensure success. I could not recommend him and his company high enough.
