ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
I was very excited when my friend and PH Phillip du Plessis owner of Intrepid Safaris called and asked if I would like to hunt elephant in Botswana this June on Johan Calitz's Concession. I had told Phillip while lion hunting together last year (we got a great old full mane lion) that I was up for an elephant hunt and I particularly wanted to hunt Botswana Elephant. The fact that Botswana was closing all hunting after 2013 and this was on legendary Johan Calitzs concession made it a no-brainer. I realized this was a last window of opportunity and booked a twelve day hunt. The flight into Johannesburg was direct from New York JFK. Phillip and his PH Harry Fourie were waiting in the Johannesburg airport to join me for the next flight on to Maun Botswana. We would be met in Maun by Johan Calitz and his PH Louis Pansegrouw. Louis would then drive Harry and me the six hours to Masame, Calitzs safari camp in concession NG42. Phillip was to hunt with another client in the adjoining concession NG41. Masame is a comfortable Tanzania style tent camp with all the amenities. It is situated on a large picturesque waterhole which was visited almost daily by Buffalo, Elephant, Giraffe, Roan, Wild Dogs and other animals of the area. The camp is composed of a total of four hunter tents equipped with either one queen or two single beds, instant hot and cold water and of course shower, lavatory, toilet, etc. en tent. In addition, there is a permanent thatched roof main dining hall with bar and conversation- fire-pit and another separate community toilet. The entire camp was supplied with 24hr electricity and running water, all powered by a diesel generator and solar/propane water heaters for each tent. Finally, there are the staffs quarters, skinning shed, maintenance shed and water towers filled by well pumps for the camp water supply. All in all, everything is first class and very comfortable. We arrived at Masame late that afternoon and there was a young bull elephant drinking at the last waterhole before camp. My first sighting of an elephant bull in Botswana and on the day before the hunt even began! I could feel the good luck. Our hunting party consisted of PHs Louis and Harry; Louiss trackers Jonni and his brother Edwin and a Government Scout Mobe. Our hunting strategy consisted of visiting one or two of the five or six large waterholes on this huge concession and glassing for bull elephants each day. We would also drive the trails looking for elephant and tracks. We would stalk any large bulls sighted or track any fresh tracks that looked promising. The objective was 50 lbs. per side or better ivory. The habitat was fairly open mopane and very dry as the area was experiencing a drought. We saw game the first day and every day. Mostly elephant. One Hundred and thirty three bull elephants were counted during the hunt and that didnt include cows and calves. Only two bulls were observed that would go over 50 lbs. during twelve days of hunting from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. Beside abundant elephant, roan and giraffe were present on a regular basis. This area had the largest concentrations of roan I have seen in Africa. Also observed, were steenbok, gemsbok, painted wild dogs, hyena, Cape buffalo, leopard, lion and eland. Early the first morning of the hunt, we found a young grown male lion calmly sauntering along the edge of the first waterhole which was named Butterfly after a famous tracker from the area. He was large, mane less and very thin. The lion calmly padded around the waterhole until we got out of the cruiser, and then bounded indignantly into the mopane bush. Later in the afternoon, the waterhole began to attract elephant and giraffe coming to drink. None of the bulls, however, had tusk over 25 lbs. and most were smaller. On the second day of the hunt, we stalked a promising bull Jonni had tracked from the road. Once we were close enough for a shot we could see that one tusk was broken and the other was probably in the low 40s. It was decided not to take him. We put stalks on and tracked several more bulls for the next three days without any sporting more than 35 lbs. of tusk. The average was probably closer to 20 to 25 lbs. On the sixth day of the hunt, we tracked another good bull for several hours in the late afternoon. He made it to a waterhole before we caught up with him. His tusks had good length but were a little thin. He looked more like a Tanzanian elephant than a Botswana elephant. Still, they were judged the best tusk we had seen. Louis thought they would be in the vicinity of 50 lbs. I wanted to take this bull but it is a Calitz policy not to shoot animals at the waterholes. We waited for the bull to leave the waterhole. When he finished drinking, it was almost too dark to shoot. We attempted to get ahead of him and sent Jonni looping around to flush him in our direction but he winded the tracker too early and spooked. We had to watch him rapidly disappear into the darkness. At this point my mood matched the darkness of the evening. We had tracked at least seven or eight promising bulls but either lost the track or judged their tusk too small. This was the first one I had wanted to take. He was gone and the hunt was half over. Several days later, the eighth day of the hunt, we tracked another promising bull the better part of the morning. He was chasing cows and appeared in to be in must. The bull kept circling back over his own tracks and the cow tracks in his pursuit of mating. After about three hours of slow tracking, we lost him. It was just too confusing. Louis was confident that Jonni would eventually sort it out but he didnt want to spend the time on what was fast becoming a long shot. Louis and I decided to spend the rest of the day glassing waterhole 19 where we had almost shot the thin tusked bull a couple of days ago. Late that afternoon, everyone was up in a lone tree glassing waterhole 19. We could see elephant, Cape buffalo and a leopard all drinking together. Three of the big five drinking at a waterhole at the same time! Harry pronounced this a good omen. It was getting toward sunset when suddenly, five bulls approached from the far side of the waterhole. One bull was considerably larger than the rest. Louis climbed down out of the tree and with a huge grin said, We are going elephant hunting. This elephant bull was unanimously pronounced a keeper. He was bull number one hundred and twenty that we had judged and both Louis and Harry thought he was more than acceptable. The excitement was palpable! Our crew left the lookout tree and proceeded to position ourselves where Louis thought the elephants would back-track from the waterhole in the direction from which they had come. The bulls departed the waterhole in the direction anticipated but then turned 90 degrees to our right. We had to rush further to the right to head them off. They stopped, milled around, then turned another 90 degrees right and started off again. The small group was showing signs of apprehension. Later, we found the leopards tracks crossing the bulls tracks and decided that he must have alarmed them when he left the waterhole. We were barely ahead of the group when they anxiously stopped again seemingly deciding which direction to go next. The bulls appeared to sense our presence but they didn't have our scent or location yet. They were standing about fifty yards away, tails straight and ears out, signs of nervousness. Jonni gave me the sticks and pointed out the lead elephant on the left. Shoot, he urged me. Harry whispered Thats not him and pointed out the largest elephant in the rear on the right. Thats him. Louis nodded yes concurring. The bull, at high alert, moved off at a fast pace and gave me a side shot. I fired the .458 at his left shoulder crease just as he started to move. The shot felt good. I heard the thump of the bullet, saw dust-up on the shoulder and the elephant sort of sounded a cross between a grunt and trumpet. He and the other bulls broke into a full run disappearing momentarily behind some mopane and acacia bushes. A little less than fifty yards, he collapsed midstride corkscrewing head first into the ground, half burying his left tusk. Louis and I circled around the downed bull. I exchanged rifles and as instructed gave him an insurance shot with my .470 in the chest between the forelegs. My first elephant was down! He was magnificent! We respectfully gazed at this great beast for a long moment taking in his huge size, then broke into a celebration with much jubilation, hand shaking and hugging. Unfortunately, it had grown dark and we had to cease our festivities and leave him till the following day. The next morning when we returned, the hyenas had gotten to the elephant but had only been able to get access through his tough skin by widening the only two holes in this mighty beast; the shot in his chest and his anus. Not much damage was done to the hide and only the liver and some intestines were eaten. We had probably chased them off on our arrival. The elephant disassembly crew as I dubbed them (about eight guys in all) began the process of skinning, quartering and collecting trophies from the elephant. When the skin was pulled back and we were able to check the vitals, we found my first shot had entered the rear shoulder and was perfectly centered in the heart. The coup de grace shot was also centered in the heart, bottom to top, forming a cross with the first shot. Harry had fired one going away shot, but it hit high in the back under the spine and over the abdomen doing no fatal damage. The tusk were removed, the tail and left ear cut off and the quartered elephant was loaded on a flatbed and transported elsewhere to be further processed. After removal of the very large nerve, the tusk weighed 55 and 57 lbs. respectively. I kept the tusk, tail, left ear for a map of Africa, legs/feet for bar stools and skin panels for boots or whatever. They were salted and prepared to be sent to the taxidermist. That night, I had them grill an elephant steak for me to eat. The meat was tenderized with a meat mallet and served rare with a minimum of seasoning so I could experience the actual taste. I found it quite good. It would have been tough without the tenderizing. The taste was similar to beef but the meat was grainier. The surprise bonus was that in the piece of meat my steak was cut from, the cook found my .458 Hornady DXS. What are those odds? I will keep that bullet realizing that I would never have gotten it had it not been for my request to eat my elephant. We spent the last two days taking pictures of the fauna, flora and camp. The trip home to New York City was smooth, picturesque and long. This was an absolutely perfect safari and a sad but fitting farewell to elephant hunting in Botswana for me. I realized how fortunate I was to have experienced this final chapter. There is hope the Botswana Government will reconsider its decision in the future. It would be a shame to loose so many elephant to poaching not to mention the loss of jobs for the locals of the area from the closing of the hunting industry which supports so many people.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
This was an exceptional safari- not easy but big country and a PH that likes to walk. For those that disparage night hunting of lion from a blind- the absolute darkness, the tension of lion so close, the shot,growling- sounds of an animal having a hard time breathing then silence (you hear allot of sounds) and not knowing whether the lion is dead or just waiting for you will make you review your life! Lion died 53 yard from blind and just 80 yards after being shot. The safari area has exceptional numbers of sable, eland, waterbuck, Chobe bushbuck, bush pig and elephants. We saw several in the 50-65lb class and we weren't even looking for elephant-this is a hugh wilderness and 100 lbers have been taken in adjacent concessions in recent years. This concession has not been hunted for elephant. There are huntable numbers of hartebeest. Lion tracks were seen daily for 5 days (3 different big males) then not till end of safari. Lion travel up and down Lugenea and Luatize River systems. Tracking lion was difficult but possible particularily in burned or sandy areas other areas has grass or hard soils that precluded tracking. Several large crocs were seen. For those traveling to Mozambique take US currency with dates of 2006 or newer-airport departure taxes need to be paid in US Dollars and they will not accept any US Dollars older than 2006. Finally, I have hunted with three other excellent PHs (Tony Tomkinson, Jason Van Aarde and Craig Middleton) and Edwin Young was as good as any- a real professional with a happy staff and camp.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
On the second morning while traveling looking for tracks that may have crossed the road in the night we saw this old bull (50+) years old. He was by himself and only viewable from the back of the truck. We glassed him and based on his ivory length, how both sides matched, and being unbroken Ronnie Crouse and I decided to get a closer look and see if an opportunity would present itself. We took a beautiful old bull ! What a way to start an elephant career.

This is my second elephant. My first elephant was shot in Tanzania in 2002. I shot this elephant on the second day of my hunt. It is probable that I might see a bigger elephant than the one I shot if I just took my time. Now, I have an excuse to go back to Botswana again to harvest a bigger one. Keep on upgrading.

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt: No problems whatsoever. The hunt exceeded my expectations.
Highlights of Hunt: Saw bull elephants every day. 11th day we found a great shooter. I took a side brain shot at 12 paces. It was everything I had trained for.
Equipment Recommendations: Practice shooting in the situations you anticipate. For me, this meant shooting off sticks and free hand. Gun was zeroed at 25 yards. Can't say enough about Monty Kalogeras and his safari shooting school. He put me in the exact situations I encounted. This provides great confidence. Make sure you're in good walking shape.
Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes
Why? My PH, the Great Willy McDonald, took great care to produce my experience. He's knowledgeable and works very hard. I hope to hunt with Willy again and highly recommend him. A lot of fun too! Henny and Alta manage the camp and its staff superbly. Henny encourages the staff to strive for excellence in something they enjoy. The product is superb.

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt: I was disappointed with the experience and enthusiasm of my PH for elephant hunting but the two very experienced PHs in camp assisted, and though he tried hard and we were successful, this is the only portion of the experience that gives me any pause at all.
Highlights of Hunt: Up close and personal on over 20 bulls, less than 20 yards. Seeing over 20 bulls per day. Having the good fortune to take a 67 pound monster on the last afternoon and a fine very mature buffalo on a traditional tracking hunt.
Equipment Recommendations: You cannot lose weight in this camp with the menu even if you walk 20 km per day. And I mean an individual order each night, five-star menu. Beyond my wildest. Henny you're too much!
Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes
Why? Magnificent animals and super areas, animals calm and unstressed or spooky. The best camp and ammenities in my extensive African experience and I thought all of them were first class, but this is another step above.

Two pieces of advice.

1. On the return trip don't take the 3 pm flight from Maun to Joberg if your flight home departs at 7 pm. They check your rifles twice in Joberg and that took two hours.

2. Don't take any Cycline drugs for Malaria or anything else because the sun will burn you and make you sick even with sunblock.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
My wife and I just returned from a Safari in Botswana. We were part of a group that consisted of 15 people--six hunters and the rest burned up the film with camcorders and cameras! Fifteen people are quite a large group for any safari company to handle as you can imagine. This was my 11th safari and I completed the Big 5 while in Botswana.

The Johan Calitz Hunting Safaris Company is the most complete organized company I have ever hunted with in Africa. The company never receives much recognition from your publication that I have been a subscriber for 15 years. I hope this will change after reading the following.

Your subscribers should know that Botswana offers the best hunting in Africa today for big game. The company I hunted with has the best support personnel and the very best professional hunters in Africa. Terry Palmer, Darryl Dandridge, Luke Blackbeard, Gavin Godfrey, Ronnie Crous, and Donnie Leinenburg are just a few of them. They have the best office staff I have ever had the privilege to be associated with before and after the hunt. Every detail is planned out carefully before the client arrives and there was not one flaw in the whole operation.

There were three elephant hunters who all took elephants over 60 pounds. There were two buffalo hunters who took 42-inch buffalo and very good swamp animals. One lechwe measured 28 1/2, which will score in the top 20 for sure. The rest were 26-27 ranges. Dr. Jon Meyer of Jackson, Mississippi, went to the Kalahari and had an excellent plains game hunt taking six animals. He and his wife, Dr. Cindy Allen, said they had great accommodations.

Our party of 15 were scattered all over Botswana. Philip Lewis of Memphis, Tennessee, hunted in the Chobe, which had more water than usual for this time of the year. He took an excellent 60-pound plus elephant the very first day of his hunt. Joe Janoush of Jantran of Rosedale, Mississippi, took a nice 60 pounds plus bull with long ivory from the NG4 1 section. Joe has an artificial leg that gave him a little disadvantage, but not too much. I hunted in two areas and saw an 85 pounds plus bull not far from the Chobe National Park. We were in very thick Moponte and the wind changed during our final approach to the elephant. Needless to say, we could not catch him. My wife who was waiting on us from the truck saw him as he went back towards the park. The camp manager, Hank, verified this was the same big bull that he had seen. This was a great bull -- one of a lifetime, but it was not meant to be! I did take an elephant that was 60 pounds, which was a nice bull, but I will go back one day for a larger one!

I also took a buffalo as they had a tag that was not sold so I elected to purchase it after seeing 700-800 buffalo. The one that I took measured slightly less than 44 inches with 17 1/2-inch boss.

The company also offers fantastic photo safaris conducted by Abercrombie and Fitch. They are first class in first class photo areas.

I am not in the least concerned about the Botswana elephant, lion, or buffalo population declining any time soon because I personally saw the following animals in just two of the nine areas: 306 bull elephants (72 over 50 pounds, 46 in the 60-pound range, and 88 in the 40-50-pound range), nine male black maned lions and three male blonde maned lions, 19 female lions, and about 1,200 buffalo. Other animals I saw were cheetahs, hyenas, wildebeest, hippos, crocodiles, plus lots of other game. I only hunted in the swamp for lechwe one day and saw four males and many female animals. The lechwe that I took was a 26-inch animal.

The water in the Okavango was extremely high and there was difficulty getting around without getting stuck a few times, but that's part of hunting in this area. All of the hunters saw approximately the same number of animals in the four different areas.

The person responsible for putting together these great safaris is none other than Johan Calitz. He is amazing and is the best Professional Hunter that I have had the pleasure of hunting with. His staff is unsurpassed in anything I've been associated with in my 11 trips. Johan is a superb person to be with and a great hunter. He works non-stop for his clients at all times, and is a master at making things run smooth and on time. His camps are unsurpassed and are located all over Botswana in the best areas.

Everyone on this trip has been to Africa at least three times so they were all experienced African hunters. Both the hunters and non-hunters all said this was the best trip they had ever experienced, and this was thanks to Johan Calitz.

This was not my first elephant hunt as in 1998 I hunted the Chewore area in Zimbabwe for 15 days and never saw an elephant over 50 pounds. I only saw 43 bulls on that trip. Botswana is clearly the best place to see trophy elephant on a daily basis in Africa today.

I hope this gives your readers a good incite on hunting in Botswana. It is expensive, but worth every cent.

The two buffalo hunters were Allen Wilson from Merigold, Mississippi and Woodson Whitehead from Memphis.
