ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
Jofie despite his age has been hunting from an early age and his knowledge is almost unlimited. The prime reason to hunt this area is for thick tusked Elephants as well as Leopard (saw several on his trail cams), Roan, Kudu and possible Lion. When combined with great accommodations, food and drink and a talented professional hunter, not to mention a truly good guy, you end with a rewarding safari. Next stop with Jofie is a photographic safari in Tanzania next year. This is another talent that Jofie offers.

E-mail from Jofie Lamprecht to Barbara Crown, December 1, 2014

Barbara

Thank you for putting me in the loop.

Below notes on the report from Robert Fortier:

I have just sent you our price list with the information on the area so that you can see what is being sold. Success in 2013: 2 out of 3 elephant were taken = average 55 pounds Success in 2014: 3 out of 4 elephant were taken = average 63.6 pounds As you can see from the above the averages are good. Success 5 out of 7. Camp is 5 star with the best of the best accommodations and food. These are two communal conservancies that are working hard to make a living. In the 2000s Kai-Uwe Denker had this concession. He took a 99 pounder out of this same area. All hunters are told that this is a tough area with low volumes of game. There is however quality. Jim Young will have phoned your office today with a report on the hunt that he did with me.

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks again

12/4/14 Robert Fortier on a telephone interview with Editor-in-Chief Barbara Crown

I have hunted all over the world. Jofie is a great person. This area is a tough area. Im not taking anything away from him as a person. When I booked he told me I would not see many elephant, but should expect to see 10 12 a day. In 16 days I saw 6. What I think happened is that the park did not have that much water previously, but they have since they put in huge water holes. Im talking acres of water. Jofie has a place that if an elephant wants to it can go get a drink in a concrete cistern, but it is not an area to bathe and stand in water as elephants do. We went to the park and saw all these big bulls in the huge water areas. Those elephants arent going to leave those water holes to go to Jofies area. Maybe the next guys in will kill 80 pounders. But I doubt it.

Jofie took over area last year. He shot 3 65-pounders before I got there, all in one place. I think they were resident bulls and he killed what was there. Is there a chance for a big bull, sure, but when you are there 16 days and hunt from morning to dark and dont see anything&. We were track hunting. We wore tires off just trying to find a track. This hunt is for someone who has already taken ele and is hoping for a truly big one, but understands he may not get anything. We saw 2 tracks and followed one big one-tusker with the other tusk broken to a nub on the other side. Last day we saw tracks of a bull that was surely a big one, but he crossed over the border into Botswana.

It should be a good area considering the location, but I think Jofie is unrealistic about what he can take there consistently. It is a tough hunt.

He charges the highest daily rates I ever heard of - $2,300 a day. Accommodations are great and the food, but if the game is not there that does not mean anything. I had a culinary experience with some hunting. Im not knocking Jofie, but this is not the greatest hunting experience. Not trying to hurt his business.

I dont expect a guaranteed hunt. I rode in the truck every day. He did the best he could, and we put in the time and the effort. I couldnt ask for more effort.

He has huntable populations of roan, kudu, leopard, impala. But this area is not for a general plains game hunt either. If you want a good roan or kudu, fine. And I am sure you can get a good leopard. Saw several while there.

Everything Jofie says is true, but all three of those ele he killed this year were in the same place. Saw tracks for females and young bulls and juveniles. No bull tracks.

I booked based on the same marketing information he sent you. Jofie says I was there at the best time. But maybe the dry season was the worst time because he was counting on those water holes. Those big bulls wont leave the swimming pools in the park to go to his place. I saw a 100 pounder and several 80 pounders in the parks water holes. Maybe first or 2nd hunt may see something in the hunting area. Area can produce big elephant but I believe circumstances have just changed and it will be tough to catch an elephant outside the park. Maybe early hunts would do better.

If you look at what he has taken and where the area is in relation to Botswana, looks good to take a big bull. I had the option for an extra week of hunting. I stayed extra 2 days and decided not to continue. Had we seen tracks coming and going into the park, OK. But we did not. One herd of cows and few young bulls, moved back and forth, but there just is no reason for the old bulls to move. I think the odds are small for a big elephant. A chance but small. Of course you have a small chance anywhere for a really big elephant.

Had it been somebody less experienced than me as an elephant and African hunter, I think Jofie would have had a big problem with an unhappy client. He has a first class camp and he knows what he is doing, so its the area.

E-mail from Jofie Lamprecht to Barbara Crown, December 17, 2014:

Barbara

Thanks for the concern.

Answers in brief below:

The average ivory weigh for the 2014 season was 63.5 pounds in this area. 75% of hunts were successful this year. In Kai-Uwes time there was NO water in this area. Hunters have paid for 7 solar powered pumps that pump every day into natural / man-made water-holes. Yes. This area is tough both physically and mentally. The chances of shooting a huge elephant are better here than most places. Just 7 miles from our the hunting boundary in Khaudum Park Fred Fortier saw with his own eyes elephant bulls in excess of 80 pounds, several in the 70s and then a huge amount of smaller elephant that one would settle for in mist areas. This is a free-range area. One cannot determine the movement of elephant. Historically the water in the park would run out by June and July making the elephant move more. Due to high and late rainfall in this area meant that there was still natural pans with water during Freds hunt.

The future of this are:

We will continue hunting this area in 2015. We are imminently awaiting this area to be extended to include the area known as West of Khaudum. This will give the current hunting area 625 sq miles in addition to what is already hunting area. This area is famous for big elephant. Below is what we sell in our brochure and website and we are upfront and honest about how difficult the hunting is. North of Khaudum - Big Game In the isolated far northeast of Namibia lies Khaudum National Park - an unfenced park bordering Botswana in the east covering 2,400 sq. miles (3,842 sq. km). It is home to Elephant, Leopard, Roan Antelope as well as several plains game species. Other game of interest include African Wild Dog and Lion. This Northern Kalahari Sandveld biome is described as a sandy forest savannah-woodland. Interspersed with flat, clay pans and a series of Omiramba (a local tribal word meaning vague river beds) that provide water most of the year. The Hunting Area On the northern border of Khaudum National Park lies the hunting area known as North of Khaudum. Two communal conservancies have joined their tribal land together and local villages benefit greatly from revenue and protein-rich meat provided by trophy hunting. With the park to the south and Botswana to the east this 250 sq. mile (400 sq. km) hunting area is by no means huge. It is however in one of the prime transient areas for thick-tusked Elephant left in Africa. Other species that are huntable: Roan Antelope, Leopard, Kudu, Oryx, Giraffe, Duiker, Steenbuck and Warthog. The Luxury Tented Camp In the shade of an island of Acacia trees awaits a traditional tented camp built on wooden platforms. Your spacious tent has fine linens, sliding doors, en-suite bathrooms with every amenity you could wish for in one of the most remote areas left in Africa. The camp is environmentally friendly and solar-powered. Built with clean lines and a blend of traditional and a splash of modern design. An open sided dining room overlooks a pan frequented by Roan Antelope and the occasional Elephant bull. Lounging on leather while sipping a cocktail of your choice and reveling under the billion star nights while enjoying the flames of the fire circle will bring you that much closer to bliss. Your own personal professional chef prepares meals. Fresh produce and meat from the hunt are served three times daily as per your requested dietary requirements. Dinners are a decadant affair with unrivaled three course meals in this remote wilderness. A wide variety of fine South African wines are avalaible as well as any other drinks that you have requested.

Hunting The classic form of hunting is used. Land Cruiser vehicles are used to transport you around the hunting area. All of the hunting is done by tracking on foot.

This area is not easy to hunt. Game volumes are low. The high quality of the game as well as the possibility to take very big Elephant is the reason for this difficult hunting area.

Ivory average 2014 season: 63.5 pounds Ivory average 2013 season: 55 pounds

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt: This is a tough area, a tough hunt, and not a lot of game. Not really a problem, just something a hunter needs to understand up front.
Highlights of Hunt: Jofie hunted extremely hard with me the entire trip. His staff was top notch, and I wanted for nothing. I had one huge bull, that in hindsight I should have taken. He knocked down two trees and charged us within 10 feet. Incredibly exciting. We had several other long but exciting stalks, on several other huge bulls. There are not a lot of elephants, but this is a location to go if you want a really huge bodied bull. I am going back in the fall of 2015. Same area. I am motivated.
Equipment Recommendations: Good shoes, good marksmanship, and a good attitude. This is wild African hunting at its finest.
Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? yes
Why? This is real Africa. Incredible living quarters, 5 star food, Jofie is a great hunter, photographer, and naturalist. His staff are attentive and very skilled. If you want a serious hunt this is the one.

Jofie also has several plains game areas that I hunted for several days. They were rugged, beautiful, and the game was extremely plentiful and diverse. We walked up on some Rhinos, and saw some enormous Kudu, Water Buck. If I had more time I would have loved to have hunted there for another week. The accommodations, food, and company were as good as I have ever experienced.

Highlights of Hunt: Harvesting a 50-year-old bull on day 13 of my 14 day hunt at 20 yards with my .375 H&H with North Fork solids loaded by Superior Ammo. Also seeing the vast herds of elephants, cape buffalo on a daily basis. Great food and company. It was special being able to hunt again with Jofie Lamprecht and get to know Koos Pienaar who has been a mentor to Jofie over the years. We covered a lot of ground and made at least 40 stalks on bulls which turned out to be too young, too thin or broken. That is until we found the old bull with black tusks.

The concession in the National Park has a very low quota on all of the allowable species. This results some of the largest herds in southern Africa. It is hard to imagine a better place to hunt cape buffalo, elephant, sable, roan, etc. I am not sure what the future holds as the concession is up of bid this year. The accommodations are very nice and located on the lake. Waking up every morning listening to the nearby hippos. It was my first time hunting with a Bushman crew which was a great experience. Jofie is great PH and experienced beyond his years.

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt: None
Highlights of Hunt: Seeing my daughter (age 15) take 3 animals (black wildebeest, red hartebeest, springbok) on her first hunt. Seeing my son (age 12) take 9 animals (kudu, oryx, zebra, blue wildebeest, nyala, red hartebeest, springbok, eland, croc). Taking a Rowland Ward waterbuck myself. My wife and eldest daughter are not hunters (daughter is a vegetarian) but they had a great time both in the hunting areas and on trips to Etosha National Park and the Caprivi strip and Victoria Falls and into Windhoek. The food and the service were exceptional. Jofie was fantastic. I was very impressed and grateful for how much care he (and all the staff) took with the non-hunting members of our family. In addition, the time he spent and the patience he showed with my younger daughter -- who surprised me by showing an interest in hunting (and taking 3 animals) for the first time. I honestly believe that it was Jofie's patience that evoked a first interest in hunting for her. Since we have returned to the States, she has remained excited and wants to expand her hunting experience.
Equipment Recommendations:
Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? yes
Why? Jofie was wonderful and the entire experience -- food, lodging, photography safaris (to Etosha, the Caprivi, and Vic Falls), and the hunting -- was unforgetable.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
Jofie has long experience in guiding but has recently started a new company, Jofie Lamprecht Safaris. His new venues (some not hunted in decades) and his affable personality made the trip wonderful. I had some reservations about the trip because two of our family members are nonhunters (and one is a vegetarian) and I was concerned that they would be "bored". I discussed this with Jofie and, despite the fact that he hunted hard with us everyday, he made special efforts to see that our nonhunters were well cared for. He also guided us on photography safaris in Etosha National Park, the Caprivi Strip, and Victoria Falls. We even managed to sneak in a crocodile hunt on the Zambezi River in Caprivi -- where my twelve year old son took at 15 foot croc. Jofie understands how to ensure that a safari is the "trip of a lifetime" for an entire family.

The facilities and food were way above our expectations. My wife, a non hunter, had a wonderful time at the lodge while I was away hunting. Hunters Namibia staff & Lodge were world class. My hunting experience with Jofie Lamprecht was truly a highlight of my life. His demeanor and professionalism shine through accompanied by a great sense of humor. We can't wait to return. We arrived as clients anxious for what our experience might bring - we left delighted with our safari and the feeling of having spent 10 days with best friends!
