Problems of Hunt: As you will learn if you do not already know, Alaska is a place where the weather is tenuous. I was not able to get out my first scheduled day of the hunt. I came in two days early to sight see, get my weapon ready, and prepare in case we had to go out early. Unfortunately Anchorage seen more rain than it has in years as it rained for 30 days staight. Getting in one day late is a thing you deal with in your mind and be prepared. It's really not a problem when you have Willie on recon observing bears. Highlights of Hunt: I find that it was the best to hunt with the actual owner of the outfit, not just someone who was hired locally as I was a customer who was coming to fill a slot. Willie has a long history of hunting brown, grizzly and black bears as a guide and also for himself. I was confident knowing that I had Willie to help me think through which bears to hunt and which to pass on. Another great highlight of the hunt was seeing about 38 bears per day on average. We seen 11 brown bears the day I felled my brown bear. Willie does his recon for his clients. I shot my first bear on day one about and hour and forty five minutes into the hunt. The second bear was taken on day three. Equipment Recommendations: I have the Sitka Gear with base layers, and two additional layers by Sitka with pants, coat, balaclava, and gloves. The weather was about 55 to 65 per day during my week on the mountain. I have the newest rain gear by Sitka that is lightweight, durable and unremarkable. This is expensive but very well worth it. Caution: I find that one of the Sitka brands is rather loud; the one that has a purple color to it is very quiet. You need the utmost quite crawling across the tundra on these bears as they will pick you off if your clothes are loud. Sitka gear is all that I wear now for all my hunts. Danner Pronghorns and Danner Kestrels were my boots. We humped for miles. Make sure to break your boots in good. I thought I had and I am glad I brought mole skin to keep my feet from blistering. Your field glasses are the second most important piece of equipment for this hunt just behind your rain gear. I used Leica Geovid 10 x 42 range finding binocs. These are spectacular in my opinion for clarity and precision when it comes to making your shot count. Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? yes Why?

I give Willie an A+ for this hunt. I have already booked another hunt with Willie for the fall of 2011. Know who you are hunting with is a big question you must ask yourself. That is why I chose Willie and not an outfitter where I may have been guided by a local hired from a tavern, by a part time guide, or someone who is inexperienced and would have walked me all over the mountain laying scent trail and risking chance of a failed hunt. Bring your Physical Condition: I worked out very hard for this hunt for one year prior coming to Alaska. Willie knew that I was not afraid to hump across the mountain to glass the big bears, nor hump down the mountain and back up once I filled my tag. Willie can accomodate hunters with physical abilities that are limited due to health issues, or those that are physically fit and have the ability to move around to different vantage points to glass bears and then move on them.

Problems of Hunt: Highlights of Hunt: This was the first my son (age 17) and I had done anything like this. We wanted to go prairie dog shooting and I solicited multiple quotes from several outfitters in South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. Willie responded back the very next day with his package pricing. Some did not respond at all others took up to a week. Sorry about their luck. I am in sales myself and I know that there are people who shop on price only and there are people who shop on quality of service, quality of product and will return their business to you based on those attributes. Willie responding quickly had already put him out front in my decision making process. Also contributing was the fact that he attached a list of every client that he took on a Prairie Dog shoot the previous year and challenged me to call any one of them and inquire about his business and abilities. It did not take me long to decide to use Willie's service as he was prompt to get back with me on my questions. His operation was very professional. His equipment was in good shape and their was plenty of it. As he noted in one of his conversations / emails with me, he has rights to many thousands of acres of shoot on and that he virtually guaranteed that we would not get rained out. On Thursday, it was raining in Ft. Pierre and north of town so we went 45 minutes south of town and had sunshine all day. He has the ability to move around the weather. Food during the day was good. Willie had fresh cold cuts, fruit, soda, water and candy bars. Plenty of stuff to snack on while taking a break from shooting. His rules for shooting were clear, concise and fair. He also said he will stay out in the dog town as long as we want to shoot and that we did. Being the first time my boy and I had done something like this we did not know what to expect or how long we would want to shoot. We started right off the bat in the morning and shot until 3:00 - 3:30 both days. Willie helped us out the first morning after letting us cut our teeth for about an hour on our own and gave us some good tips about how to use our external turrets on our scopes to get the best advantage out of them. All in all Willie was a great help a good guide and a fun guy to hang around. We will be making arrangements to go back to SD for a couple days later this summer and do it again and we will probably be bringing along 2 or 3 friends as well.
