I purchased a hunt at the Alaska Safari Club auction since I knew my wife and I and two of our grand-kids were headed for Africa where we helped start an orphanage in Swaziland. It was a six day spiral horn hunt donated by Jannie Otto and valued at $16,929.
In late May of 2007 we arrived in Johannesburg at around 5 o'clock in the afternoon. My grandson and I were picked up for the four hour ride to the ranch and hunted with one of Jannie's young guides named Hugo DuPliess and had a good time taking kudu, bushbuck, eland, etc. At the end of the hunt Jannie arrived and I asked him if we could settle up that evening. He said we would do it in the morning, but the next morning he was gone and had left the bill.
There were two items on the bill that I felt were not right. We arrived at 5:00 in the evening and paid the agreed $500 to be picked up for the four hour ride to the ranch and return per his donation contract. Now he wanted to charge an additional $900 for the day since he considered it a hunt day. The second item was the tax issue. His contract says the 14% VAT tax will be on the daily rate. Jannie insisted that he charges the tax on the estimated donation value of the hunt which was $16,929. I tried to discuss this with him via cell phone on the drive back to Johannesburg but didn't get very far. Hugo then said he was to tell me that if I didn't pay in full my grandson and I were to be dumped in Johannesburg and they would not help with any hotel or airline reservations to Swaziland. I went ahead and paid the full amount but haven't gotten very far on these two issues since we've returned. We we're overcharged around $2,500.
I've tried to get him to focus on these two issues but he just accuses me of complaining and trying to run his business. I know he donates to other clubs and I believe they should be made aware of what I believe to be unethical business practices.
I would appreciate any help you can give me in collecting this overcharge. I was particularly upset that he would threaten to dump me and my black grandson in a dangerous city like Johannesburg. This is not acceptable.
Rebuttal from Jannie Otto Safaris:
Thank you for the opportunity to respond to the complaint by Tom Plooy against Jannie Otto Safari regarding his recent safari in South Africa.
1. Mr. Plooy bought a Jannie Otto Safari Package at the SCI Alaska Chapter Fundraiser 2006. We have a long standing good relationship with this chapter and never experienced any problems before.
2. As stipulated in the package, the following items are not included in the package:
Taxidermy processes, packaging, dipping and shipping charges Gratuities to staff, professional hunter and camp staff (always appreciated). Extra car hire for big groups, air charter and airline fares, before, during and after safari All alcoholic beverages 14% VAT (Government Tax) on daily rates of the safari Rifle Hire at $50 per client per day, ammo not included. Any additional touring before, during and after the safari Pick-up and drop off Johannesburg International $500 per hunting vehicle Conservation Fund $10 per animal taken and exported.
3. Please note that the $500 transfer fee is stipulated in the offer as not included. The reason is that our camp is situated 400km from Johannesburg Airport. We have to drive from camp to the Airport and return to pick the client up and again, to drop the client at the Airport. This totals 1600kms. The client always have the option to arrange his own transfer. This is an additional service to our clients.
4. 14% VAT (Government Tax) is payable on the daily rate of the safari and all services, as per the Government of South Africa's Laws. Please note that this is also noted as Not Included on the package. Jannie Otto Safaris acknowledges that Mr. Plooy was incorrectly charged in this regard. Please see an email to Mr. Plooy on 6 August 2007 requesting his bank details to refund the credit. Mr. Plooy has to date not responded to this request.
5. Mr. Plooy states that he and his grandson Christopher, was dropped in the dangerous Johannesburg and left to their own mercy. Mr. Plooy requested his Professional Hunter to drop them off in Swaziland where his wife was visiting an Orphanage. Swaziland is at least a 6 hour drive from Pretoria plus 4 hours from camp and in another country. Mr. Plooy did not want to pay the transfer cost from Pretoria to Swaziland and requested to be dropped at a hotel where he can make his own arrangements. Mr. Plooy was taken to The Farm where most of the Jannie Otto Safari clients overnight. The hotel was requested to give full support to Mr. Plooy and if he needed further assistance to contact Jannie Otto immediately. Also note that the hotel is at least 100kms from Johannesburg, situated in the Eastern suburbs of Pretoria. Mr. Plooy has not been to Johannesburg or its suburbs during his safari with us.
6. Mr. Plooy complains that he was overcharged:
Mr. Plooy arrived on 26 May, departed 2nd June, total of 8 days. Package that he bought gave him credit for 6 days. The first day Mr. Plooy was charged $250 per hunter (2 hunters). On the eighth day he was charged $450 per hunter which is a 2X1 rate as per our price list. The conditions on the price list stipulates that "safari starts on date of arrival at airport and ends on date of departure". We do not sell hunt days and no-hunt days. We sell safari dates.
Jannie Otto Safaris is a professional hunting outfit and wish to solve this matter as soon as possible. We thank you once again for the opportunity to respond to your query

PH Jannie Otto did not have Tanzania papers. Not his fault and they were obtained during hunt. He hired an appropriate and very good PH to help. Problems with distribution of the tips. My allergic reaction to the Tsetse fly bites. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Leopard at 6:40 in morning, (10 minutes on the bait). Lion at 2:30 pm same day, (2 cats in one day). Two probable top ten animals. Civet and Nysaa wildebeest. Civet was 9 3/8 SCI. |

| Why? |
My hunt was everything an African hunt should be. We were 80 miles from the nearest village. There were areas of the block that no one had been in five years. I had excellent animals. |

This block was permitted to Game Frontiers of Tanzania, Box 19746, Darasalaam Tanzania, They leased to Jannie Otto and provided the camp and hunting crew. They were very good and all fine people. Jannie had not yet received his Tazania permit. I will not fault him as this was postponed by government at least 4x and twice while I was in camp. He had to travel to Dar 3x in order to please the issuing agency. Jannie Otto had hired Alistair James a young American who had a permit to guide. He was excellent. I was on the first hunt of season. It would be hard to design a hunt with finer results. Three cats in 30 hours if you count the Civet as a cat. Two big kitties in one day. Two probable top ten animals. Seven animals that booked. This is pretty good. The Impala was the best I saw and the Selous does not have trophy Impala. It did not book. The Cape Buffalo did not book. There were many buffalo in the area. I am limited in my ability to walk much over 4 miles. I was not going to walk an a buffalo or an elephant into the ground. Given the limitations of my abilty this was a fantastic hunt.
