You have to watch out for Jamy Traut he is sneaky, he starts out being your PH and before you know it... he is a good friend! From his wife Rentia, two fine sons, Peter, his very capable assistant, to Willem who went along as a photographer you couldn't meet a finer bunch of people. I could go on and on, but truly everything was top notch. I also shot exceptional springbok, zebra, warthog and impala.

Get in shape! You don't have to be in great condition to hunt with Jamy, as he will tailor the hunt to your abilities, but you'll truly experience the wildness of Namibia if you're in great shape and can get out there on a long stalk after your trophy. We didn't make it to the Kalahari camp on this trip but will definitely do it next time to hunt the Kalahari Gemsbok & Springbok, and see the lions.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
It has been an absolute pleasure to hunt with Jamy Traut at least once each year for the past 10. Together, we have taken exceptional Cape buffalo, leopard, kudu, sable, eland, gemsbok and many other species of plains game. We have come close on very big elephant and lion as well, and I plan to return and look for big tusks in September. Some or all of my family has joined these hunts on 3 occasions, and I mark those safaris as the highlight of my life. Everyone is made to feel welcome and have been given unimaginable opportunities. Jamy runs a smaller operation in order to provide exceptional and personalized service. Plains game hunts are conducted on his beautiful Panorama farm outside Windhoek, and his big game hunts are spread across his 3 concessions in the Caprivi. I've referred many hunters over the years and all have come away happy. Better yet, most return or at least have made plans to return. Hunting with Jamy is the experience of a lifetime.

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt: One of the worst things that can happen to a hunter is when a trophy is destroyed in shipping. This summer, I received a crate containing both hippo and crocodile skulls. They apparently made it all the way from Africa and through customs intact, but somehow the crate was smashed between Seattle and Montana. Being stronger, the hippo skull survived - but the crocodile skull was destroyed. I learned several important things in the aftermath. First - the insurance purchased at the time the crate left Namibia ended with delivery in Seattle (bad news). In that the damage happened after the crate had cleared Customs, I was on my own. Second - Coppersmith is an exceptional company. Branch Manager Debbie Logan cleared the freight and then worked with me for months in an attempt to mitigate the loss. She never gave up, and was partially successful. Third - Reddaway, the trucking company, stood behind their service and partially reimbursed me for the loss. All this took some time, and while the eventual settlement came up short of the trophy's value, I could have been left with nothing but a box of splintered bones. Here's a tip of a cap to both Coppersmith and Reddaway - and a reminder to all to verify all the details of insurance that goes with trophy shipping.

Airline Comments: We had no problems with the Firearms or ammunition. All of the bags were checked through Frankfurt direct to Windhoek and Atlanta on return. We had a recurring issue with each leg of Air Namibia flights where my father and I sharing the same name (Sr/Jr)would be canceled as a duplicate booking. This was quite a headache, and while we never missed a flight we had multiple battles with each ticket counter to get my father on board. This was brought up to Air Namibia HQ each time and they assured us it was corrected only to have happen on all four of our Namibia legs.

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt: This was 7th safari to Africa and my first to Namibia. I chose Namibia as a Safe Destination where I could bring my family along to enjoy Africa and Celebrate my 50th Birthday. With my father, wife and 3 daughters along it was going to be a tall order to keep 4 non-hunters and 2 hunters busy for 15 days. Understanding all of the Logistics of starting in the Desert highlands for 2 days, moving to the Caprivi for dangerous game to hunt 3 different conservancies in 10 days and then back to the Desert to finish the hunt out at the Panorama camp, well it was a difficult task. That said, I had hoped for a much more organized situation. There were many issues including last minute Leopard applications and logistical issues with the camps that had the family awaiting transportation and many other operational problems. Understanding this is Africa and things do happen beyond anyone's control....most of these issues could have been avoided with proper planning and communication. I shared with Jamy that he needs to hire someone to run the operations and communication of his business. It was a Great experience for the entire family, but It could have been better with proper planning.
Highlights of Hunt: Spending my 50th birthday on the great Continent of Africa, surrounded by friends and family doing what I love more than anything else....Hunting!!! Truly a great experience for the family as they visited 3 countries:Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. The Family visited Caprivi National Park, Chobe National Park and Victoria Falls. My daughters were able to visit a Elementry school and donate a Safari cares bag full of school supplies and spend part of the day with the children. I was able to take great Old Warrior Bull Hippo, A respectable Cape Buffalo Bull (given I only had a day and half to hunt)and a very exciting Own-Use Non-Trophy 40lbX40lb Bull Elephant. Having my 76 year old father with me hunting Zebra (Burchell and Hartman's) Lechwe, Steenbuck, and Gemsbuck. Truly a grand time!
Equipment Recommendations: General Safari gear for the desert. Be prepared to get wet hunting the Chobe and Kwando River areas for Buffalo and Hippo.
Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? yes
Why? Jamy and Jan are truly great PH's with a great staff. They took solid care of the entire family. While not perfect logisitcally and the Leopard hunting was never what I had hoped for we had a great 15 days of hunting, sightseeing and game viewing. We had some confrontations with Cow elephants and they both handled them in a exceptional manner. The Conservancies while not as prisitine as some of the Government Concessions (people living in and around the conservancy) I had hunted in other countries were a great hunting value and held plenty of game. A great experience for my entire family.....what a way to turn 50!

It was truly a great experience for the entire family. The Hippo, Buffalo and Elephant hunting was exceptional. While it was a tall order I was hoping for a better run at the Leopards. That never seemed to be a real focus. Understanding anytime you can balance all the requirements of a family vacation, a 50th B-Day party on the banks of the Zambezi, a hunt with 4 of the Big 6 on the list and you can take 3 of the 4. Well, I have hunted long enough and hard enough to call that a success! You always need a reason to start planning the next hunt. I would not hesitate to recommend Jamy Trout Safaris. Mac Plymale

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
Addendum to hunting report 9/20/11

Jamy and Rentia are now on their own and things are fine. I met Jamy Traut 2 years ago at the DSC Convention after being introduced by Jack Atkinson. Jack has never matched me up with anyone but great guide and PHs. Also, Jack made things easy by helping me bank money towards my safari for two years.

On my first two trips to Africa, I missed my family, so I made a decision to make my next safari wtih my wife and kids to share the fantastic experience with them. That's when Jack pointed me to Jamy Traut. I immediately felt comfortable and confident with Jamy. Due to work obligations, I requested that the safari be moved to 2011 with no problem. Travel arrangements were done with Debbie Trinidad of Custom Travels. She was great. When I was stuck in Windhoek, during Hurricane Irene, she worked tirelessly to get us home.

Upon arrival to Windhoek, Jamy Traut was there to meet us. He took us to his Panorama Camp two hours out of Winhoek. In short, all was great and all my anxieties of being there with my family wre gone after Jamy's wonderful wife Rentia was there to greet us. Camp was comfortable, food was great and game was abundant. Jamy took my son Gabriel under his wing and spent many hours on unsuccessful stalks and misses. Jamy was always patient, reassuring and made every hunt exciting and fun for my son. After a short time, I noticed my son and Jamy were forming a bond that only a safari could make. They were great friends and after some episodes of kudu fever, Jamy found a cure and Gabriel was able to kill four trophies, most exceptional specimens that would be "gold." My wife was able to shoot her first animal, a beautiful mountain zebra. My two young girls were never bored and on afternoons would love to ride in the safari vehicle, climb copies, go game viewing and photographing. Jamy put me into two groups of eland. In one group there was a giant one but it was noted to have only one horn, the other broken off at the base. The other group had many bulls but none of the trophy quality that Jamy said we would see.

After four days in Panorama, it was time to chase elephants in the Caprivi. We spent a night in Windhoek, had a wonderful dinner with Jamy, Rentia, children, and friends. After a flight to the Caprivi and a short boat ride, we arrived at camp on the banks of the Chobe River. Camp was a traditional safari camp, where was abundant game. Elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and buffalo were everywhere. At the time I felt the area was a little crowded, but many villagers use the area for fishing and Botswana has a couple of game lodges across the river. In the end, it was a blessing as my family was able to spend a day at a lodge with a pool, fine food, and multiple activities while I was out chasing "Jumbo." Jamy and his wife made arrangements for my wife and kids to take a day trip to Victoria Falls and go for an elephant ride. They had a ball. Jamy and Rentia also brought their friend Corlia along to entertain the kids. In the end, I do not know who entertained who but I do know they laughed a lot and in a short time were close friends.

I saw elephants on each hunt, they were everywhere. On day three we were able to view four large bulls that we had been chasing for two days. We studied them closely and Jamy stated that there was a very respectable bull in the group but we may be able to do better. We drew back into the bush and decided it was worth having a bull in the hand rather than a possible bigger one in the bush, especially with the family along as I wanted to entertain and spend time with them. After a long stalk, through swamp and reed, Jamy put me in the path of the 4 bulls. My heart was pounding as I eventually shot a very nice bull at 25 yards. Of course Jamy would not have a great experience like this not be shared by my family, his wife, and Corlia. He sent a tracker by boat to pick them up for photos and celebration. I was humbled by the killing of such a magnificent creature. My ivory ws estimated at 4 1/2 feet and between 40 and 50 lbs. That night, around a campfire, it was agreed that we would head to Kalahari for a change of scenery and a chance for a large eland.

After a day of travel and multiple stops for fine food and shopping, we arrived at the Kalahari camp. Camp was remote but very comfortable with large fire pits, fixed toilets, running water, and electricity. Here the game was amazing. I took a huge eland, Gabriel took a huge (gold) gemsbok and I also shot a very nice duiker. Jamy spent an afternoon tracking a lion for my girls to photograph and it was exciting and wonderful for them, as well as for me and my wife, Diane.

After the hunt, were stuck in Windhoek due to unforseen circumstances (Hurricane Irene). Even through our safari was over, Jamy and Rentia never left us alone. Rentia spent two days at the coast with my kids and they had an absolute ball dune riding on 4 x 4s visiting a reptile zoo and spending a day at amusement park.

In short, Jamy and Rentia Traut are as good as good gets. They are wonderful kind people who love kids. Jamy is a university-trained biologist who is anxious to share his knowledge with kids and clients. But more than that, he loves to hunt, is a great companion in the field and is a top of the line PH. You may come as a client, but you will leave as family. Jamy, Rentia, and their children will hopefully spend Christmas with us and Rentia would like my daughter to come for summer to "work" in camp. I highly recommend Jamy and Rentia for anyone considering a family safari or for any serious hunters wanting a great safari.

GAME DESCRIPTION
Major Game Animals Taken: Hippopotamus - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: Exceptional old bull
Crocodile - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: 14' 11"
Springbok - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: 14.5"
Game Sought But Not Taken: Elephant - Availability: Only had 1.5 days to hunt problem bull near Estosha.
Game Condition Comments: Members of party took elephant, buffalo and hippo as well, plus plains game during our 1.5 days at Jamy's new "Panorama" location about 1.5 hours east of Windhoek. All indicators are that Jamy's 2 Caprivi concessions and his various plains game (and lion) areas represent the best Namibia has to offer. I have hunted with Jamy 10 times already and already securing dates for multiple return trips. Both plains game and big game trophy potential and populations appear to be very strong.

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt: Only mistake was not allowing enough time (hunting days). Another week would have permitted a proper effort to secure the problem elephant bull and take additional plains game species.
Highlights of Hunt: Mostly, the Chobe and Caprivi - my favorite places in Africa. Taking hippo on land at very close range. Having my croc attempt to "board" our boat after being shot 2 times on the shore.
Equipment Recommendations: Rifles of adequate caliber (we all used Kimbers in .375 H&H Mag., .416 Rem. Mag or .458 Lott., along with .30-06 Spfd for plains game. Premium bullets (we used Federal Premium). Light boots that dry quickly.
Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? yes
Why? I have hunted with Jamy 10 times, with each experience being better than the last. His 2 Caprivi concessions are full of big game and his new home base (Panorama) is a plains game paradise. Cost is always reasonable and personal service is guaranteed.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
I have taken many exceptional trophies over the years with Jamy, including the Namibian national record Cape buffalo (51 3/8 inches), elephant, leopard, 4 kudu over 56 inches, a 39.5-inch eland and a 32.5-inch waterbuck. Jamy has hosted 2 family safaris for me, the finest experiences of my life. Every aspect of Jamy Traut Hunting Safaris is exceptional, affordable and quite honestly fun. I will be hunting with Jamy as long as he is in operation.
