Buffalo were incredibly abundant with numerous hard boss bulls. Bushbuck were abundant but as always difficult to get a shot at in cover. Reedbuck very common but expect to sort though lots of OK rams to find a really big one. Saw multiple herds of sable every day. Waterbuck less common than other game but I killed a 28" bull. Young warthogs and sows everywhere. |

SUMMARY

 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
Getting to Quelimanae, Mozambique requires 2 flights from Johannesburg and they don't fly more than 2x/day in some cases. Once in Quelimanae expect a 6 hour drive into the Mahimba Reserve camp, the last 2 hours on dirt roads. It's remote. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
I saw at least 600 buffalo in the 4 days I was looking for them (I killed my 40" bull on the second day but went with my camp mate on day 3 and on day 4 we were asked to take a cow by the local officials for a local village. A PH took the cow while I video taped the hunt. Seeing that number of sable was very unexpected and the waterbuck was a terrific bonus I hadn't planned on. The food was outstanding considering how remote the camp was. The PHs were absolute professionals but very congenial all the time. We were well into the dry season so almost not mosquitoes. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
The standard - a good heavy rifle and possibly a medium caliber for antelope, good binoculars and boots. Plan to sweat a bit. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
yes |
| Why? |
This is my 3 hunt with JP Kleinhans Safaris and with Mel Kleinhans as my PH and I have never had a bad experience. They absolutely know their business and take pride in a quality camp and abundant game. They are very scrupulous about directing you to mature and older animals. You won't experience any ground shrinkage. |

This was truely a quality hunt with great people. The buffalo were there in terrific abundance. Other game, especially Roosevelt sable were very common. The PHs were extremely professional and insured you took only a quality mature animal that was a solid representative of the species. They stopped one buffalo charge cold at 20 yards. JP Kleinhans maintains a camp staff of 35 locals that cook, clean wash clothes and skin and preserve trophies. The staff were very friendly and dilligent although try to learn a few words of Portugese before you go if you want to talk a lot to them. I got by mostly on gestures and a little spanish plus the few words I learned while there. JP also maintains 4 anti-poaching teams around the perimeter of the reserve to insure that game remains abundant. All the meat except the little we ate each day went to the staff and their families and the local villagers. Food and sleeping accomodations more than I would have expected - very good.

JP got Mahimba back after loosing it for two years. During this hunt he found out he gets Mahimba for the 2013 season again. Poaching was an issue as the previous outfitter did very little or no anti poaching. JP set up 4 different anti poaching camps to get this under control again. We had to hunt hard for some of the plains game but were always successful. This will only get better as long as JP has Mahimba. The buffalo and crocodile hunting was not affected by the poaching. Due to the fact that the previous outfitter did not kill very many buffalo over the previous two years this years clients all killed very nice buffalo. JP and his brother Mel know how to hunt Mahimba. They treat the staff very well and this made for a great camp. The trackers ability to spot and track animals was nothing short of phenomenal. A bonus for this area is the presence of Roosevelt sable. My only disappoint was the airport Mozambique police at expected a bribe to clear my rifles. JP and his staff handled this situation without paying the bribe but I would not want to go through Mozambique customs my myself.

JP HAD THIS AREA FOR 5-6 YEARS AND THEN SOMEONE ELSE CAME IN FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS. THEY HUNTED IT BUT DIDN'T KNOW THE AREA WELL AND HAD LITTLE SUCCESS. JP AND HIS BROTHER MEL KNOW THE AREA WELL AND WILL DO WHAT EVER IT TAKES TO GET YOU ON THE GAME. IT TRULY IS AN AMAZING AREA WITH LOTS OF WIDE OPEN TERRAIN AND PLENTY OF VERY TIGHT FORESTED AREA. WE SAW PLENTY OF BUSHPIG AND OTHER WILDLIFE EACH AND EVERY DAY. I EVEN ARRANGED AHEAD OF TIME TO FLY TO COUNTADA 11 WHERE I SHOT A TROPHY RED DUIKER AND SUNI IN A HOUR AND HALF OF HUNTING. 4 1/4" RED DUIKER AND 4' SUNI. WE SPENT A FEW DAYS IN THE EASTERN CAPE TO START OUR ADVENTURE AND SHOT SOME GREAT ANIMALS INCLUDING A COUPLE RECORD BOOK COPPER SPRINGBOK. JP KLEINHANS HAS REALLY GOT A SPECIAL AREA IN MOZAMBIQUE.

Condition Comments: |
All game sought was abundant and the outfitter exhibited immense patience in viewing large numbers of trophy animals to make sure the largest and most mature was harvested. Not only were the typical plains game species abundant, but more rare and elusive species such as bush pig, cape grysbok, cape bushbuck, and cape kudu were seen on multiple occasions. The hunting party consisted of two hunters, hunting 2x1 with the owner and operator J.P. Kleinhans. During our 11 days of hunting we were able to harvest a total of 37 animals: 16 different trophy species, 2 types of pigs, and 3 cull impalas for dinner. All trophy animals made at least SCI bronze medal with the exception of 3 that were taken due to their unique appearances. There were 8 gold medal and 9 silver medal trophies harvested between the two hunters. J.P. owns or has exclusive access to hundreds of thousands of acres for hunting and depending on the species sought you will venture all over the Eastern Cape and Karoo to achieve your trophy. J.P. leaves you with thought that no trophy is unattainable and that he will do what it takes to ensure your goals are met. That being said, should you wish for a more relaxing hunt, you have the option to step out the back door and hunt the ten of thousands of acres surrounding his lodge and harvest several different species from nyala to zebra, while enjoying what has to be one of the most beautiful properties in all of the Eastern Cape. |

On this trip the group had four separate SAA flights and three of those flights were late. We missed one connecting flight from Joberg to port Elizabeth on the way in and missed a second connecting flight from Washington DC to Houston on the way home because of the tardiness of SAA. But to SAA credit the group was properly cared for, and the arrangements for overnight stay in Joberg were very nice with all meals being comped and very enjoyable at the Southern Sun Hotel in Joberg. As far as the actual flights, the planes were clean and the crew was nice and helpful. There is no way around it, the flight from DC to Joberg sucks due to its 17 hour duration. |

Staff: J.P. employs several trackers and skinners, but his right hand man is Peter, better known as Boetie. Also, you will find as part of all your hunts is a jack russell named Savannah. Both Boetie and Savannah saved multiple trophies from being lost and made this trip much more enjoyable because you don't have to worry about losing a trophy because of a misplaced shot. They will find any wounded game, and you will be in a much better mood because of it, trust me I am speaking from personal experience. In the lodge you will have a friendly and well trained staff. Laundry is done daily and the rooms are very clean and well appointed. The kitchen is under the direction of Natia and her head cook, Smallie. Smallie is a wonderful chef, and he is at fault for my ten pound weight gain during this trip or at least that is my excuse.
Lodging: The lodge is situated atop a large hill that affords a wonderful view into the surrounding valleys. We spent almost every evening sitting outside around the fireplace enjoying the fire and the large selection of South African wine that J.P. has at his disposal. The lodge also contains some amazing trophies that J.P. has collected over the years to include two cape buffalo at 47 and 49 inches from his hunting concession in Mozambique.
Taxidermy: I had often heard that certain taxidermists could create works of "museum quality". It turns out that J.P. is one of these taxidermists. He was trained in the States and worked on staff at one the world's largest natural history museums. His on sight taxidermy shop allows you to view trophies in various stages of completion and feel 100 percent confident that your trophies will arrive home in beautiful condition.

Can't say enough good things about this PH and his staff. Excellent service across the board and no unwanted surprises. Not a worry or additional expense from airport pickup to airport drop off. JP is a knowledgeable and skilled PH and always has a good Plan B up his sleeve. The hunting was very memorable and nothing short of fantastic. Fine company and interesting conversations made each day a real pleasure. Varmet hunting was a bonus and a total blast. This was my second hunt with JP Kleinhans Safaris; I successfully hunted blesbok, impala, and springbok in March 2010 with JP and brother Adolf and had a great time then too. JP also has high quality and reasonably priced taxidermy on site. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

The main thing I want to convey to your readers - when my PH and I arrived in Johannesburg we took a smaller plane to Beira, Mozambique. It was South African Air. When we boarded the plane there was a cart next to the plane with three people. We were told there was not enough room in plane for carryons and to put them on cart - that would be loaded in hull of plane and as soon as we landed they would be right there. I though that was odd but my PH said that was normal. When we landed in Beira sure enough the bags were right there and all seemed to be ok. Inside the terminal Chris my PH asked me if I wanted a beer. Of course I said ok. He went to pay and no money. He had all his cash in the carryon which went into the hold of the plane. I checked my carryon bag and same thing. The rotten SOB's got 1,000 from Chris and 1,500 from me. I always carry cash in three different places so I wasn't without. I was mad but I felt so stupid to have let this happen to me. So a word to the wise never let your money, passport, etc out of your sight. Chris filed a police report but you know how far that will go.

This was a fantastic hunt. JP and Clint are the epitome of true professionals in this business. JP's camp is run very well and his staff and PH's are excellent. Clint Mattheus, my PH for the hunt was excellent. He was patient and tailored the hunt to fit me. Overall this was a phenomenal hunt and I highly recommend JP Kleinhans and Clint Mattheus for anyone looking for a hunt in Mozambique or South Africa.

I took my nephew, Sean Davis to South Africa for his first trip to Africa and his first big game hunt, the entire staff at J.P. Kleinhans Safaris was of high caliber and most attentive to the needs of all hunters in the camp. We hunted many different areas around Hankey, South Africa in the Eastern Cape, with an additional trip to the Little Karoo making this experience more interesting and exciting. Be prepared to work for your hunt, stalking game up and down mountains and ridges and through brush, cactus and thorns. This hard work made the hunt for my nephew a thrill filling his hunt package, and although I primarily went as an observer on his hunt I couldn't resist taking a nice blesbok, and blue wildebeest.
The area held a large abundance of game besides the animals we hunted: greater kudu, impala, blesbok, springbok, duiker and steenbok, we also saw an abundance of zebra, red hartebeest, baboon, bushbuck, black springbok, blue and black wildebeest, nyala, ostrich, grysbok, gemsbok, lechwe.
I highly recommend using a firearm expeditor for your import firearm permit, it is well worth the money and simplifies arrival in what seems a constant changing of SAP offices at the South Africa Airports, although most officials there seem to be professional and easy to deal with, construction continues at their airports and things get moved around. The only time consuming process seems to be dealing with our own TSA, which needs training on how to open a rifle case correctly. Checking my rifle case for departure in Washington DC IAD, they opened the case upright on its edge, on returning to Washington DC to transfer for my domestic flight the official opened my case upside down, if these people do not know up from down, what is their knowledge of firearms.
I highly recommend J.P. Kleinhans Safaris, who I previously hunted with in Mozambique for Cape buffalo.
