HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
Below is a letter I wrote to Ed Beattie of Cabela's Outdoor Adventures immediately after my return from the hunt. While a little long, it provides a good summary of the hunt. I also provide some additional comments after the letter.
Dear Ed, I am writing this letter to I hope better express my disappointment and dissatisfaction with a hunt I booked through Cabela's Outdoor Adventures with African Silwane Hunters (which I understand is closely affiliated with Inyathi Hunters) in Zimbabwe from Aug. 22 thru Sept 4th, 2006. I am including it with the hunting report form you sent to me as the form didn't provide me with the opportunity to fully address the issues I encountered.
I hunted with a companion, Vernon Lovejoy, who also booked the same 7-day Cape Buffalo package Cabela's offered. We originally booked the hunt in June of 2005 for an August 2006 trip, and following a visit with you and Frank Cole in early December 2005, made our air transportation arrangements through Cabela's. During that December visit, after Vernon and I expressed high interest in a large (40'+ range) bull, you suggested that we might want to lengthen our hunting trip to provide a better chance. We did extend for one additional day for the new daily rate of $720, bringing our total package hunt price, including trophy fee, to about $7,220. While you understandably couldn't make any guarantees about trophy size, you left us with the impression that success rates were very high for these types of hunts as long as we didn't have our sights on only a 40"+. We accepted that, hoping that some luck and hard hunting could bring us a bigger trophy.
During our Dec. visit to your office, I provided a map showing many of the safari concessions; include State Forest Lands surrounding Hwange National Park. When we asked which concession we would be hunting in, we were told that it would depend on the buffalo's movements and where they were at that particular time and that the safari company had numerous concessions in the vicinity of Victoria Falls. As I said in the hunting report, the accommodations, equipment, PHs, and food were fine. Our problem was that there simply was no trophy game in the area we hunted, Sikumi Estates, just west of the town of Gwayi River, Zimbabwe. When I use the term "trophy" game in this letter, I just mean representative mature animals, not record book quality. During our hunt, 7½ days of hard hunting each, totally 15 days, we never saw a mature, representative Cape buffalo, let alone anything approaching 40". While we each stalked buffalo herds on at least 3 days, these were the same resident herds, with no mature bulls.
While we were impressed with the quality of the accommodations at Sikumi (I believe it was called Camp Selous) we were also quite surprised at the number of staff at the camp. To elaborate on that a little more, towards the end of our stay I asked Dennis, the camp manager, how many people do work there so we could provide adequate tip (it wasn't their fault there was no game). The list he gave me totaled 21 people. If you included my PH and two trackers and Vernon's PH and two trackers, that is a total of 30 people. I went into this detail here as I think it has considerable bearing on my conclusions from the hunt.
Vernon and I had said from the very beginning that our interest was Cape Buffalo, as we both have many plains game trophies from previous trips to Africa. I told Steve Williams, via email that the only plains game I was interested in were warthog, grysbok, and bushbuck. At the beginning of the hunt the PHs asked Vernon and I what other animals we were interested in. I re-iterated the warthog, grysbok, and bushbuck, but also said if we see a something really big (record book quality), like an impala, kudu or an eland, we would be interested. As events turned out, we didn't need to even bother with thinking about a list of other animals. For the first several days, my PH looked pretty hard for a trophy warthog, particularly since hunting warthogs doesn't have to conflict with hunting buffalo. Warthogs were most active in the middle of the day, when the buffalo are bedded down and wind currents are erratic, making stalking difficult. We never saw a trophy warthog. By the end of the 5th day, I told the PH to not worry about warthogs any more as it looked bad for buffalo and I didn't want to go through the efforts of importing just some warthog tusks. We did spend all afternoon on the 6th day trying to shoot a camp meat small impala ram, with no luck. All impala we saw were very skittish, never giving us an opportunity for a shot. Early in the morning of the 7th day I did shoot a small impala ram for camp meat. We realized that this type of hunt differs from a plains game ranch hunt, but I had no idea that any kind of plains game would be tough to see, let alone harvest. On the sixth day of hunting, three kudu bulls offered a shot, though none were very large. My PH did remark, "Finally, a trophy", which pretty much sums up the plains game hunting on this property.
Something else that particularly bothered both Vernon and I was that in spite of the fact that we weren't seeing any buffalo, two other hunters (actually a couple from Denmark, but only the wife was interested in buffalo) was brought to the camp. They were due to arrive at camp on our 5th day of hunting, but were delayed in Vic Falls for an additional day because of lost luggage. While the camp certainly had the ability to accommodate these two additional hunters and they had their own PH and trackers, they hunted on the same property as us. To Vernon and I it appears that the quality of this hunt was extremely oversold by both Cabela's and African Silwane Hunters. The reason we have been given so far for our lack of success was the large amount of rain earlier in the year. Weather is always an issue on a hunt, but it's usually the weather during the hunt, not weather months earlier. When it was apparent that there was a lot of water everywhere from these rains, Cabela's should have informed us then (May or early June) and given us some options. As an example, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department is already informing hunters to expect fewer pronghorn next year because of low fawn crops this year, resulting from a very dry spring. I belong to SCI and the Hunting Report, both of which are very good at announcing issues that may concern hunters, world-wide. I have heard nothing from either source about problems with hunters getting buffalo in the Hwange area because of plentiful water. The lack/absence of trophy game (particularly our species of interest, Cape buffalo), the skittish nature of all the plains game, and the bringing in of another hunter appeared to Vernon and I that the only reason we were there was to support the camp staff by giving them a job. To us, African Silwane Hunters only appeared interested in generating some income and not providing any kind of quality hunting experience.
I would like to close on this issue of a quality hunting experience. Long ago my father told me that if I couldn't handle disappointment then I shouldn't be a hunter, as there will certainly be some disappointing times. To say that this hunt was a disappointment however is an understatement. After my first trip to Africa, I couldn't wait to go back. My friends have remarked that after my first trip, I couldn't stop talking about it. After this trip, they have to pry words out of me as I now have a very sour impression about hunting in Africa. I relied on Cabela's expertise to provide me with accurate information, and that did not occur. I should have been made aware in June 2006 before I made the last 50% payment that the high water availability (from their heavy seasonal rains) will dramatically affect success rates and given me the opportunity to cancel the hunt and pay cancellation penalties (including airfare) or look at some other option. In your terms and conditions you waive any liability of hunter success to cover yourself legally, but I believe you and African Silwane Hunters/Inyathi Hunters still have an ethical responsibility to accurately describe hunting conditions to clients. You relied on previous years' success and not what is happening now. I am willing to come to your Sidney office to further discuss this issue and look forward to hearing back from you.
Sincerely, Timothy A. Bottomley
During a follow-up phone call with Ed Beattie, I requested a refund for the hunt. I did receive my prepaid Buffalo trophy fee ($2,295) and 25% of the daily fee ($1,258.75).
Rebuttal:
Gregg Severinson of our office forwarded your e-mail to me, as I was the Hunting Consultant for the Zimbabwe cape buffalo hunt that Tim Bottomly is referring to. I was quite surprised to see Tim's report, as I thought that all of this had been resolved a long time ago. Basically, here's what happened: Tim Bottomly and his hunting partner, Vernon Lovejoy, booked a buffalo hunt with Inyathi Hunters in Zimbabwe. Vernon Lovejoy (who I have known for many years) was most interested in hunting with Inyathi Hunters, as his father-in-law had previously hunted with them and had many great things to say about this safari company. I have a very long track record of doing business with Inyathi Hunters, as I have been their Agent for the past 14 years and have personally hunted with them on several occassions. In addition to my personal hunts with Inyathi Hunters, most of the senior management of Cabela's have also hunted with them - many of them on multiple occassions. Most importantly, I have booked many, many clients with Inyathi in the past 14 years and the vast majority of these clients have submitted very positive reports about their hunts with Inyathi. Like any reputable Agent, we are required to completely research any outfitter that we represent. Given the fact that we have 14 years of positive client reports and have had many Cabela's employees personally hunt with this outfitter, it would be completely impossible for us (or any Agent) to have conducted any more due dilligence. Over the years, our clients have enjoyed very high success on their buffalo hunts with Inyathi Hunters. In fact, the English translation for the word "Inyathi" from the Indabele and Shona languages of Zimbabwe, means Cape buffalo. Yes, these guys hunt elephant, lion, leopard and plains game, but they have always specialized in Cape buffalo. It is very rare to have a client booked for buffalo with Inyathi and not be successful - but it does happen. While I haven't officially analyzed the data, I would think that our long-term success rate on buffalo with this outfitter is somewhere in the 95% range. That's pretty darn good for the 95 out of 100 buffalo clients that you book with them, but there will still be 5 out of 100 clients that are going to be unhappy! Do we need to start guaranteeing fair-chase hunts for free-ranging, wild animals?
Do we need to start doing all of our hunts behind high fences? For the sake of our sport, I sincerely hope that the answer to those questions is a resounding "NO"!!! Tim Bottomly and Vernon Lovejoy booked an "economy" Cape buffalo hunt. At the time, it was the shortest and least expensive Cape buffalo hunt that we offered. That being said, the vast majority of these economy hunts were successful and we all feel terrible that Tim and Vernon didn't get "their" buffalo. Being the kind of company that Cabela's is and having a reputation for superior customer service, we tried to do everything possible for these clients. I know Steve Williams (Director of Inyathi Hunters) very well and consider him to be a good, personal friend. Following the conclusion of this hunt, Steve Williams and I shared many e-mails and phone calls regarding what had happened and what could be done to satisfy the clients. We finally came up with an agreement to refund the buffalo trophy fees in full to both clients, as well as offering them the choice of either a 50% credit on daily rates towards a future hunt with Inyathi, or a 25% cash refund of day rates. Vernon chose to accept the refund of trophy fees and a 50% credit towards a future hunt. Tim chose to accept the refund of trophy fees, plus an additional cash refund of 25% of the daily rates. Both clients agreed to this and I thought the issue was resolved. Apparently, at least for Tim Bottomly, it is not. I feel very badly that Tim isn't pleased, but don't know what else could possibly be done. When almost every aspect of a hunt is rated highly by the client and a refund is given just because they didn't happen to harvest a particular animal, I don't know what other solutions exist. In fact, I am very concerned that we may be setting a precedent by refunding money for a good hunt, that just happened to be unsuccessful as a matter of natural circumstances. If someone, ie., the clients or the Hunting Report, has a better solution, I would gladly entertain it. Sincerely, Ed Beattie Asst. Manager Cabela's Outdoor Adventures

Cy Angelloz did a great job of making me feel comfortable with the chaotic political situation in Zimbabwe. Always felt safe. Local people I came into contact with were obviously happy I was there. Africa needs hunters to help sustain wildlife. I will go again.

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
One of the buffalo's horns was broomed off. Arranged with the outfitter to hunt on private land for leopard, so I could hunt them at night, but for some reason didn't arrange this. He said he would leave that decision up to the PH. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Seeing a lot of animals I only dreamed of, or have seen in a zoo. Seeing Victoria Falls. Being treated so well by everyone, including the customs people in Zimbabwe and South Africa. You might say I was pleasantly surprised, especially from what I have heard. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Quiet clothes. Something like fleece. I had bought some plain olive green and khaki colored long sleeve shirts and pants, and were way too noisy in the bush. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
Yes |
| Why? |
Seeing a lot of very good trophy animals, and being entertained by seeing other animals that were not on my hunting list. |

| If Seeking Restitution, What is Sought? |
I was hoping that my Outfitter Steve Williams, would offer me a very good deal (next to nothing) on a leopard hunt. Being that my PH made the comment that there is no reason to not take a cat, when you can hunt them at night. Had I been able to hunt at night for leopard, I know for a fact I would have come home with one. |

|
I don't know if all PH's are this good, but when Sean Grant, my PH, says that the animal you are about to shoot is "X" amount in inches, he is dead on. He truly is as stealthy as a cat, and climbs trees like one too. He really worked hard to try to get me a leopard. We had tom leopards feeding before and during my hunt, but couldn't get them to come out during the day. We built four blinds over the 15-day hunt, and only saw females coming to the baits during the daylight hours. The Matetsi area is a game rich area that holds great numbers of species that you would expect to see on a safari. This truly is an awesome place to hunt. As far as the politics, or problems that have been in the news and being reported about Zimbabwe. I never once saw anything out of the ordinary. In fact everyone from the customs officers to the three policeman that I saw in Zimbabwe, were so laid back and relaxed, I felt at home. The only thing that was evident of anything that I have heard of in this region, was an obvious fuel shortage. My outfitter was importing fuel from Botswana and RSA. Other than that, my experience in Victoria Falls customs at the airport was very pleasant and uneventful to say the least. We drove through one roadblock on the way to the Falls, and the police were very pleasant to deal with. I would go back to Zimbabwe without any reservations at all. In my opinion, your safety would be much worse visiting any large city in the United States, than visiting Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
