This was my forth trip to Africa and I would rate this outfitter as an excellent. My hunt had two legs one to Botswana for the elephant hunt, and one to Zimbabwe for small cats and antelopes. The elephant camp in Botswana was typical African bush tent camp with good facilities and generator. Since we were hunting in southern part of the country, except elephant which were abundant, I didn't see much of other game. Zimbabwes camp was very fancy with nice rooms and showers. The area had good numbers of game specially Leopards, Kudos, Elands, Blue Wildebeests, Zebras, Impalas, Gent Cats, Grysboks, Baboons, Klipspringers, and lots of other game. Arnold had arranged a very well hunting trip for me.

The 1st 12 days was to be hunting buffalo & sable. The later 14 days were for wing shooting, fishing & small plains game. On the 12th day, in the last 30 mins. of daylight, we got the 43" sable. During that time, I didn't see one shootable buffalo. The Drummonds of Bubiana Safaris, had worked with our P.H. Martin Naude, and Pili of Ngamo Safaris, to extend our buffalo hunt in another area at no cost to us. On the 16th day of buffalo hunting, I finally shot a quality 41 1/2" bull, at 25 yards with my Ruger #1, 375 H&H, after some fantastic hunting. This was truly the trip of a lifetime.
|
|
We booked a buffalo and sable in Zimbabwe Africa from June 1, 2011 through June 30, 2011. Our booking agent, Arnold Payne of Impala Safaris, (480-558-6932) insured us a memorable trip of 12 days of buffalo and sable hunt followed by 14 days of wing shooting fishing & plains game in the lower veldt a very large and beautiful area owned by Drummond Farms.
After our Delta flight from Phoenix to New York, we found that South African Airlines had moved our flight from New York to Johannesburg back six hours so we had a long layover in New York. Because of that, we missed our flight from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls. We had booked two days in Victoria Falls to rest up and make sure our luggage and guns had time to catch up with us, so we wouldnt lose any hunting time. Seems like one out of three times flying with guns things get delayed. We have avoided using South African Airlines for some time, but this trip I must say was very pleasant in spite of the delays. The service and polite consideration on the ground and in the air were very good this time. It was a great improvement from our previous experiences several years ago.
The next day, we met up with our P. H. Martin Naude, to start our hunt. Martin turned out to be a fine gentleman and an excellent P. H. He predicted that we would have a buffalo and a sable in the salt within five days, and wanted to know what we wanted to hunt with the rest of our time there. Martin had hunted the concession a lot of times, and said it was one of his favorite areas, but he not been there in several years. The hunt concession we went to was part of Ngamo Forestry service, owned by the Zimbabwe government, which is contiguous to Hwange National Park. As we entered our hunting concession, Martin took a detour to a water hole where a young man stayed to maintain the well pump. He informed us there werent any buffalo, but there was a very large sable that came every day. As we continued onto camp, I told my favorite hunting companion (my wife Tina) that I had a feeling that this sable had my name on it. We hunted hard every day from dark to dark for the next 12 days without any luck at all. We spent most of the 12th day at the waterhole where we had started, with 2 hours of light left. Martin asked if I wanted to make an evening drive or stay on this water. I chose to stay, and in the last 20 minutes of light, a dozen sable came to water, including the bull the pump man told us about previously. I felt very fortunate to have harvested this fine 43 bull. During the 12 days of hunting, we had not seen one buffalo worth shooting. There was very little game in this concession besides elephants & baboons, because there were only 3 out of 7 waterholes working. There was also a lot of pressure from poachers; we destroyed a number of snares.
Our PH Martin was very disappointed to find the sad condition of what had been one of his favorite places to hunt. So was I.
Martin drove us to Bulawayo to Southern Comfort Inn. The owners Craig and Lesley Hunt treated us so well that we felt like old friends immediately. (scs.fhb@gmail.com)
Martin had contacted Ken & Ticki Drummond, our main outfitter, and told them of our deep disappointment in our buffalo hunt and asked them to find a place to continue our hunt for buffalo, the main target of our quest. Ken Drummond contacted Pili, one of the top people from Ngamo. The next morning we continued on to the low veldt for plains game, fishing, and wing shooting. After only one and a half days wing shooting, and a failed stalk on the best wildebeest I had ever seen, we received word to return to Bulawayo. Ngamo had allocated a buffalo for me in one of three different concessions. So back across Zimbabwe we went.
With a quick overnight at Southern Comfort Inn, we were on to more buffalo hunting, hopefully this time with a buffalo included.
This buffalo hunt was the most exciting hunt of my life. Getting within 25 yards of cape buffalo in tall grass, time after time, close enough to hear them snoring during their mid-day rest, tracking herds every day which included running from a rampaging elephant. Numerous times we would find the tracks of lion that were hunting the same animals we were. At sundown on the third day, I took a 41 ½ bull with my Ruger #1, 375 H&H, at 22 yards.
I was amazed how long the bull stayed on his feet with a big hole centered through its heart from my 270 grain Barnes X bullet. The bull ran about 85 yards into the tall grass and waited for us. The death bellow came after about 15 min. We had just taken two steps to follow the bull, as we were going to run out of shooting light and everyone gave a sigh of relief followed by big smiles and handshakes.
We all know the standard response to a bad hunt, sorry, tough luck, & goodbye, but I was offered my choice of coming back next year or continuing my hunt on quality concessions at no extra cost to me. I am very glad I chose to continue with this hunt. I did not expect a guaranteed animal, just the fair chance that was represented in beginning, thats what I got, and it worked out just PERFECT!
My thanks go out to Arnold Payne, Ken & Ticki Drummond, Martin Naude, & Pili. Their treatment of me and my hunt is greatly appreciated and very rare in the current hunting industry. I highly recommend this hunt, these people, and this area to all hunters.
