This family safari was organized by the highly experienced PH Ian Wilmot, who lives in the game rich Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Ian listened to our ideas and desires, than took care of all the logistics, except Airline travel. His work was flawless!
Air travel arrangements were competently completed by Doug Gray of Gracy Travel, San Antonio, Texas (l-800-299-8585 or l-954-973-63l8). Gracy Travel's South African employees (Bruce, etal) met our group at the Johannesburg, South Africa Airport, and guided us on our way with ease!
Ian Wilmot arranged for our group to utilize the entire Mark's Camp at the Lalibela Game Reserve. Lalibela is a beautiful area in the Eastern Cape province, approximately an hours drive from Port Elizabeth, on them Indian Ocean. It encompasses some 18,000 acres of rolling hills and valleys, varying from open plains to dense bush. And it has large numbers of game and free-roaming Big Five. Mark's Camp is a magnificent collection of stucco and thatch rooms with in suite bathroom and shower facilities; a big lodge with kitchen facilities and a large dining room; a separate lounge for cocktail purchase; and a large fireplace area to relax by. The staff of cooks, servers, bar tenders and maids were very, very good. Food was excellent, generally consisting of coffee and snacks at daylight; a big brunch in late morning; and a great dinner, with wine, at night.
Hunting was conducted at Lalibela and numerous adjacent ranches and farms, both f near and far. If hunting well away from Mark's Camp, a lunch was packed and if you W got back late at night, a plate dinner was waiting. Laundry was done daily.
The five (5) Professional Hunters were personable, very competent and hard working. They all had good fourdoor hunting vehicles and furnished excellent rifles. There were several skinners available to promptly take care of our trophies.
Vans were used for trips between the airport at Port Elizabeth and Lalibela. One van was also on call for trips to Port Elizabeth for shopping and to nearby parks, one of which had elephants that the kids could ride. In addition, Lalibela provided open vehicles, for daily game drives, under the supervision of the very competent and knowledgeable chief game ranger Kelli. Local Africans provided drumming lessons and native dancing for the kids (and adults) on several evenings. And a nighttime springhare chase was great sport for all.
Our family group consisted of Sandi and I, four children, their spouses and eight grand children (ages 4 to 18), for a total of eighteen (18) people. Thanks to our excellent professional hunters, everyone of our group successfully hunted big game. The patience of these hunters and rifles with suppressors made it easy for even the youngsters. The family bag consisted of 58 animals. The trophy quality was great and no animals were lost.
The quality of this safari was well beyond our expectation -even down to the lions roaring at night. We couldn't have asked for more. In fact, some of our family said that they never dreamed that it would he this nice! Thank yon! Thank you Gracy Travel; Lalibela Reserve; Mark's Camp Staff; our Professional Hunters? Greg Hayes, Gary Phillips, Carl Van Zyl, Juan McDonald and most of all Ian Wilmot, who put it all together in a truly professional manner. A trip of a lifetime with our family really came true!

This is mainly mapane bush interspersed with a good number of pans, four of which have permanent water from wells. This is primarily elephant country with fair numbers of steenbok, hyena, buffalo, lion, leopard, zebra, etc. However, Botswana has severely restricted permits for anything other than elephant. |

Getting guns into South Africa. It took over two hours in Johannesburg to clear guns. All ammo was checked and I had to prove who I was hunting with. |

Everything. Game was abundant and of trophy quality. My son and I felt like it was four buddies on a hunting trip rather than hired guides. We each killed 13 trophies that will make the book. 13 gold, 7 silver, and 6 bronze, plus zebra, ostrich and jackel. |
