SUMMARY

 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
None other than too much excellent food and wine |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
All of my trophies were way above average and qualified for Game Field Medals. I doubt that I will ever exceed the trophy quality of the Cape Buffalo, Sable, Black Wildebeest and Oryx. In addition we saw 3 leopards numerous Roan and white rhinos in the park. As before being able to hunt in the Waterburg National Park was a very special experience. Joofie brought his chef with him to Waterburg. There is a lot of walking required; his trackers never lost the track. Just amazing. I shot the buffalo on day 3 and the sable on day 6. Another highlight was seeing 7 cheetahs on their home farm Rooikraal where I shot the zebra, Oryx and black Wildebeest. Joofie is far more experienced than his 32 years would lead you to believe. He is also a professional photographer and the pictures of my safari are world class as well. I am already planning my elphant safari in the Caprivi in 2013. In summary, this was truly a once in a lifetime safari. |

I have flown Delta Airlines for years and have had no problems until this trip. After departing Windhoek and arriving in Frankfurt, our flight to Atlanta had been cancelled. So we approached the Delta counter in Frankfurt where they informed me that my wife and daughter would not be traveling with me and that they would be flying Air France to JFK. We had used Skymiles to upgrade to First Class and that my wife and daughter would be flying coach, to this day there has been no refund by Delta for the Skymiles. This was minor compared to the rest of our adventure. Upon arriving at JFK my rifle case and my hunting partners case did not arrive. We were instructed to file a report upon arrival in Las Vegas. We filed the report and were treated with what I consider the worst Customer Service I have ever experienced dealing with any service organization. Not only could they not tell us anything, they acted as if they didn't want to waste their time with our situation. After 3 months of aggravation they informed me yesterday that they have determined the baggage is lost and will be mailing a check in the amount of $1700.00. I will do anything I can in the future to never fly Delta Airlines again. |

of Hunt: |
The Lamprechts provide a wonderful hunting experience. Their Lodge is absolutely first class, the food fantastic, the comraderie outstanding. This was my third trip to Africa and everything about our visit to Namibia was spectacular and all the credit goes to Joof, Marina, Louis, and the staff. My wife and daughter joined us late in the hunt and wished they had come sooner to enjoy the Lodge and hunting, and of course Joof and Marina. We spent 5 days touring, after the hunt, with Louis and had a fantastic time. |

The entire experience was first class. I could not have asked for anything more. For the hunter wishing to introduce his wife and family to Africa this is the way to achieve it. For anyone wishing to hunt Africa for the first time, Hunters Namibia is the perfect formula. Be warned that it will spoil you and may set the bar too high for any other African hunting experiences you may have in the future. |

|
I am tardy in filing my hunting reports but after spending 30 days in Africa this year, and being a one man business, I had a lot of catching up to do upon my return to Wisconsin. I filled out two forms last evening, but there wasn't enough room on them to vent and rant about South African Air and Johannesburg Airport. Nor was there enough room to pay sufficient compliments to both of the professional hunters I hunted with.
First, South African Air. I am not a fan of New York City but ended up having to stay in NY overnight on my way out. My trip through the overseas terminal turned out to be a breeze given my business class status. Others did not fare so well. The flight over was normal. But once I arrived in Johannesburg the dick dance began.
I had been tipped off that Johannesburg Airport (Whatever Airport, as I call it), was a mess, that gun transport through it was a pain so I wisely elected to file all of my paperwork through PHASA for a fee of $100 or so which turned out to be a blessing. PHASA also arranged meet and greet service for me with Bangy Travel, which was a godsend!
After waiting for an hour or more for our guns to finally come through, about a dozen US hunters were lead on a merry trail by one of the airport workers who insisted on moving our guns to the police department area on a trolley. So far so good. We followed with our luggage trolleys. I then met my Bangy Travel meet and greet representative, Sharon. She proceeded to whisk me through the needlessly complex South African Gestapo, utilizing the PHASA paperwork. After which she took me, my luggage and my guns outside so I could have a much needed cigarette.
She then took me to SAA check in for my flight to Durban. I had to open my gun case two more times, (inside the airport after being cleared by the SA Police Dept.) for a connecting in-country flight. Sharon got me headed in the right direction so I bid goodbye to Sharon and told her I would be back in 12 days and wished to enlist her services once again.
Johannesburg airport had changed since I was last there in 2005 I noticed. It seemed a lot bigger. Oh well. I just passed if off as progress.
After an overnight stay in Durban, where once again I had to open my gun case upon arrival, just to prove that I wasn't a terrorist, my PH Rayno Egner from Coenraad Vermaak Safaris picked me up for our trip into the bush.
12 days later Rayno dropped me at the airport in Durban and helped me through the once again, needlessly complex SA Gestapo so I could fly to Johannesburg. Once on the plane I started looking at my watch, wondering why we were not taking off. It was a cool bluebird day without a cloud in the sky. The luggage was loaded. The hatches closed. The airport was not busy. Finally about 40 minutes after scheduled takeoff we lumbered down the runway.
As soon as we arrived in Johannesburg an hour late I grabbed a luggage trolley and collected my luggage. Sharon being held back by the SA Gestapo, yelling at me, "Hurry!" I had to wait for my guns. Finally I was given my guns and was hustled to the SA Police once again. Here there was a line of very friendly Americans being checked. They could see that I was a bit agitated as I was trying to get checked through so I could make my connecting flight to Namibia yet that night. They offered to allow me to go in front of them, for which I was very grateful.
Once cleared through the Police I was allowed to wheel my cart out into the general population with Sharon running interference in front of me telling me to "come this way", to "hurry."
Johannesburg airport now became a nightmare. None of the Police Department checkpoints where I was supposed to check my guns, yet again, were open. We ran from one desk to the next and were met with blank stares by the SAA ticket agents. Finally, sweating and panting, both Sharon and I realized I was going to miss my flight...because SAA decided to arrive an hour late and the airport was such a disorganized mess and because of the SA Police didn't man their check stations. I had allowed four hours to make the plane. Not enough in SA as it turns out!
Sharon went to bat for me at the SAA desk, reaming them out for their ineptitude and demanding that I be provided free lodging for the night, which she obtained. I was rebooked on a 7 a.m. flight to Namibia and then taken to a goof ball airport hotel for the evening. No porters, no bellman, no carts! So I had to drag all of my gear and guns 20 yards at a time to the elevator, then to my room and then repeat it the next morning. The night was a disaster with planes taking off and landing all night, no sleep and having to get up at 3 a.m. to meet Sharon the next morning to go to the airport.
Sharon picked me up as planned at 4 a.m., three hours before flight time for the 4 minute drive to the airport. When we arrived at the airport Sharon dropped me and my gear at the curb and I got a trolley while she parked the car. We then went up the escalator with the trolley as all of the elevators at "whatever airport Johannesburg" were not running. Once up top we went to the huge new bank of check in desks...where no one had shown up yet. We were first in line but had to wait well over an hour before the first ticket agent showed up.
Then we were told we would have to go elsewhere to check the guns in. Nobody there. We sought assistance. We wheeled all my gear to another checkpoint. Nobody there. Finally after going up and down escalators and going to four checkpoints someone finally took my dread guns. I wasn't quite sure I would ever see them again but I was tired of the run around.
Content in knowing that my nightmare in "Whatever Airport" was now over, I went to the gate, which was about a mile away, seriously, and waited. We were finally checked in and ushered out to a cold bus, where we waited some more. Finally underway we were given a wonderful full tour of "Whatever Airport"...the entire thing! We arrived at the plane but the doors didn't open. We could see our plane...see them loading luggage...see them loading food and beverage, but we waited some more.
After more than 45 minutes standing on the bus, the bus returned to the terminal. Finally another SAA employee came onto the bus, said something to the driver and off we went again, back to the plane. This time we were allowed to board the plane. Orange juice was served. Then an announcement:
"Sorry for the delay. A crew is on its way and it will be only a few more minutes".
This turned into another 45 minutes. SAA had not called a crew. Unbelievable. They forgot. They finally fired the engines about 20 minutes after I was to have landed in Windhoek and we were gloriously off.
When I finally arrived in Windhoek, collected my gear and guns, I was in for another long wait. Nobody was at the Namibian Police Department. So, all three of us hunters on board, waited some more. And some more.
I was to have arrived in Windhoek at 7:30 a.m. We arrived about 9 a.m. By the time we cleared the Namibian Police Department it was almost 11 a.m. and my poor PH's wife had been sitting and waiting for me all that time. Monica Lamprecht is a dear! A wonderful, unflappable lady who takes all of this stuff in stride. She even brought a Jack Russell puppy to hold on the way to their fabulous lodge. ( I love Jack Russells).
My hunt in South Africa with Coenraad Vermaak Safaris and PH Rayno Edner went off without a hitch. Everything went picture perfect with the exception of the weather. A good nyala was my main quarry. On the second day of our safari Rayno told me to stay on the cruiser with the trackers while he hiked up the side of the mountain to get a better look at a good nyala, telling me he had called the office for a weather report and there was a huge cold front rolling up from Cape town and if it were to arrive that we would probably not see another good nyala for the rest of my safari. I followed his advice, hiked up the mountain and sat patiently for the nyala to clear a bush. An hour or so later he did and I took him at about 300 yards. To Rayno's credit the cold front arrived that afternoon, turning the weather sour and cold and windy. And we never did see another nyala. I took a great black wildebeest and a red hartebeest as well.
Namibia was wonderful, save for five days in "Hell" in theWestern Namibian Mountains. Hunters Namibia Safaris, owned and operated by Joof and Jofie Lamprecht, is a class act. Their lodges are better than the Ritz Carlton. The food five star. Everything was beyond expectation. If you are seeking a five star resort...with hunting...Hunters Namibia is the place.
I did not get my leopard due to the extreme cold and wind. Nothing was moving. It happens. Leopard hunting is hard. I understand that. It was not Jofie Lamprecht's fault in any way. We hunted leopard hard some nine to 12 hours a day. The team did everything possible to put a leopard on bait. It just wasn't meant to be. That's hunting. But still Jofie felt somehow responsible. I finally related to him that I had been on 34 high altitude elk hunts in my life. I have taken 12 bulls on 34 hunts...barely 30%. And only two of the 12 were record book animals. Hunting is hunting. Not his fault whatever.
While hunting with the Lamprechts I took a fantastic old Hartmann's zebra stallion and a high ranking steenbok. Jofie also had me take a couple meat animals for the staff, a "cull" gemsbok, (which happened to be better than the one I have on the wall), and a red hartebeest. We also hunted birds almost every day to my delight, doves, sand grouse, guinea fowl and francolin, geese and ducks and jackals. And, I was surrounded by wonderful little Jack Russells at all times. What a great experience!
On leaving Namibia, SAA was at it again. I had traveled more than 15,000 miles with the same gear and guns but now at the Windhoek Airport, SAA tagged me an additional $250 for an "extra piece of luggage", (the same ammo case that had been with me since leaving Minneapolis). I just paid it so I could go home and be done with SAA. But it still irks me. I was traveling business class. I knew the rules and had abided by them in the number of pieces and weight. But SAA for some reason, on the third to the last leg of my 9-flight trip, just wanted to piss me off one more time! And they did!
The trip home was uneventful once I got out of "Whatever Airport". Coming down out of the clouds over New York City, I had to admit, that NYC never looked so good. I was glad to be back home. 30 days is too long to be gone.
I would highly recommend avoiding SAA at all costs. And, avoid Johannesburg if at all possible. The next time I go over I will fly through Germany just so I don't have to ever give SAA another dime of my money and I don't have to see Johannesburg again. The two of them combined are enough to put you off hunting. (Almost).
Fifteen years ago when I went on my first African safari, SAA was a great airline, even in coach. Since it has deteriorated into a cattle call airline that shows little if any regard for its passengers. As hunters we have choices - we do not need to support these people.
On the subject of traveling with firearms, I find it terribly curious that one can buy a "street sweeper"...an AK-47...on any street corner in South Africa for $50 to $75 US on any given evening yet the South African Gestapo treats visiting hunters like muslim (lower case intended), terrorists while American, German, British, Italian, Spanish hunters bring millions of dollars into the South African economy every year and never harm a soul. Yet they treat us all the same...as if we are criminals. For a country with out of control crime, such treatment to visiting hunters flies in the face of reality. It makes no sense.
One more thing, Barbara, I was told that "Whatever Airport" had been expanded and juiced up to accommodate the world soccer tournament during which South Africa hopes to cash a multibillion dollar check. Good luck! Soccer is not important to traveling hunters, I am sorry. But being treated like armed derelicts really grinds me. I have to wonder how many of the real terrorists who will be lurking in SA during the "lawn fairy" tournaments will be checked and rechecked every time they enter an airport. Progress in SA comes at a price. Unfortunately, traveling hunters are paying the considerable price for South Africa's morbidly-slow learning curve. Wake up over there!
Barbara, thus ends my rant. I had great hunts...and if it weren't for SAA and the SA Gestapo, it would have been a tremendous trip. But I arrived home glad to be back in an organized, civilized rational country. I still have a bit of a bad taste in mouth for South Africa. It will be some time before I return, if ever, because of it.

Hunters Namibia, and more specifically, the Lamprecht Family (owners), are an absolutely delightful family who run a first-class operation in every respect. I took my 13 year old son (Brandon) who was the primary hunter. Jofie Lamprecht, our PH, was wonderful company and very knowledgeable in judging trophy quality. He was also extraordinarily patient and encouraging with my son. We saw and harvested excellent quality animals and all listed species were plentiful. The accommodations (lodge), staff, food and equipment were all remarkable. We elected to use their guns and ammo to avoid the hassle of transport and found their firearms of outstanding quality - Joof Lamprecht was formerly a custom gun dealer in Windhoek. This would be an excellent choice for a single hunter, group of hunters, father/child or family. I simply cannot say enough nice things about Hunters Namibia, the Lamprecht Family and Rooikraal Ranch. We had a ball. |

|
After completing the hunting portion of our trip we went on a photographic/sightseeing trip with Hunter's Namibia. On that trip many additional species of game and the diverse Namibian countryside were seen. The country is beautiful and people were friendly. The trip ended with a tour of Windhoek and shopping. Nothing was left to chance. We were met at the airport upon arrival and cared for through out the stay. Our highest praise to the Hunter's Namibia organization, to Joof, Marina and in particular to Jofie, our PH and companion, who shared his love of Namibia with us. In the future we plan to return.

Everything about this safari is first class. Joof and Marina Lamprecht are first class people and perfectionists as well. As a result, everything about this safari was outstanding - the accomodations, the meals, the PH (Joof), the hostess (Marina), the staff (lodge and trackers), the abundance of game and the quality of the trophies. |

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |

You will not find a better plains game safari in Africa. Nor will you find one where you get more value for your money. You and your entire family can enjoy a magnificent 10 day safari and collect numerous trophies for much less than what it costs for a top notch elk hunt in New Mexico or Arizona. Namibia is the most stable, clean, safe, hunter friendly country in Africa. It is sparsely populated and the native people are very friendly and glad to have you in their country. Unlike other African countries, the democratic government is very stable, their economy is good and there is very little crime. And for us hunters, Namibia has incredible animal populations. The Lamprecht's privately owned concession is in excess of 50 square miles and has an astonishing variety of terrain from grassy savannahs to rolling hills, small mountains and sub-Kalahari sand dunes. The resident and migrating animal herds number in the thousands. In addition, they have exclusive hunting rights on adjacent concessions that triple the amount of territory available to hunt. They guarantee you that you will see 500 animals a day and that the average hunter takes an average of one trophy per day. We normally saw that many animals before noon and averaged more than one trophy per day. And the trophy quality of those animals is mind boggling. The trophies that you take will almost always rank in the top 50% of the SCI record book and many times will be near the top. The hunting lodge and your accommodations are magnificent. You will feel and are treated like you are in a five star resort hotel rather than the African bush. The Lamprechts strive to recreate the feeling of the lavish safaris of old that we have all read and dreamed about, without the lavish costs that you see elsewhere in Africa. And they do an excellent job of doing just that. The food and wine are outstanding and you will gain weight, even though you walk miles each day. You will truly enjoy their company and companionship as well. The hunting is true fair chase hunting that is done by the spot and stalk method. You will do a lot of walking but it is not hard walking. Our wives accompanied us every day just for the opportunity to see the beautiful country and the massive numbers and variety of animals. After a wonderful 10 day safari (and 26 trophies between the two couples), the Lamprechts took us on a 5 day vacation around their beautiful country. Everything about the safari and the vacation was so perfect that my wife and I turned around and booked another two week safari in 2004 so we could come back with our sons and let them experience this wonderful piece of Africa. I would highly reccommend this safari to anyone who loves to hunt, especially someone interested in bringing their spouses and children to Africa.
