The hunt with Hucal Safaris was set up at the Reno SCI show. I had hunted with Hucal several times before and knew they were very good. We flew to Buenos Aires then on to Bahia Blanca and drove to their new lodge, which was a wonderful restoration of a 100-year old ranch house. There were six other hunters and all had good bedrooms. Food and wine were excellent - the perdiz hors d'oeuvres and roasted lamb were superb. German Rossi did most of the guiding and his father was the chef of great skill. The game included perdiz (partridge), doves, pigeons, ducks and a few geese were available. Of course it was amazing to see the enormous number of large multi-colored parrots as well. The grouse/perdiz hunting dogs were just great and well trained. With respect to our transfer from Buenos Aires and gun permits, the employees of the Rossi family in Buenos Aires made the transfer without a gliche or stress as one can occasionally encounter when traveling alone. I have had trouble in the past, especially in Cordoba. Their employees transferred us from the main airport and hotel in Buenos Aires to the local airport for the flight to Bahia Blanca. For a nominal charge, had we desired, they would have waited by for us to shop and imbibe at restaurants if we so chose. We also stayed in a nice hotel in Buenos Aires at the Aspen Suites. I had a very good handicap set up and was well placed in town for touring. Both plane rides were very smooth. As I am a paraplegic, this can be a serious problem, but every effort was made to be helpful and comforting. Argentina has implemented a visa charge of $230 and a gun permit fee of $190 per gun; all to be paid in US dollars. The exchange rate from US to Peso is about 1 to 390 and the best rate is at the airport. After shooting birds in large, good cover fields, we went west to Santiago del los Andes for red stag and hunted a large property to which Hucal had access. The lodge there was deluxe to the max. The stag were plentiful, and viewed ibex, fallow deer and Pere David deer as well. We did not take a stag as the client missed an easy shot. I did not intend to shoot as I have shot many in Argentina, Mongolia, New Caledonia and the US. But for me, it was a great thrill to see them. I am 84 years old and somewhat feeble. I did shoot some small animals for food with a .22 magnum. The weather was cold and some snow did fall, which was beautiful on the Andes. The roads were in good shape, and we had good new vehicles.

Game Condition Comments: This is perhaps the quickest and easiest cougar hunt in the Americas. It is a baited hunt where bait is used to "localize" the cats that are then spotted and shot. Argentine puma are smaller than most NA versions and darker in color. The ranch bunk house is antique-historic yet comfortable and the atmosphere as real as it gets. Just staying there a few days is worth the trip. There are free range European wild boar and fenced area with red deer and blackbuck.

If you want to make sure that you end up with a large male, then tell the ranch guides this when you arrive and be prepared to insist on it at shot time. Otherwise, they will expect you to shoot the first adult puma that you see, which in our case came within the first hour of each hunt. There were three hunters in my party and we hunted for 15, 30, and 75 minutes respectively before connecting. Our shots were 100-135 yds. but you can stalk closer if you desire to. The habitat is arid, sandy, brush with a Mediterrianian climate. Night time temps for our hunt were below freezing. It rarely ever rains there. Diverse bird hunting is offered a half day's drive away. We combined birds and puma and made a couple of stands for boar.
