Problems of Hunt: Frame on T/C (.300 Win Mag) I was stretched and kept blowing open on me - wounded two animals before I changed out the frame with the .22-250. One disadvantage of handloading to maximum PSI. Highlights of Hunt: Travelled all over Namibia and hunted various terrain. Took three new SCI Top 10 species. Dropped a 4,000 pound giraffe with a .300 Win Mag. Dropped the springbok at 251 yards with a .22-250. Equipment Recommendations: Small caliber or a solid for the pygmy antelope. Practice faithfully to 300 yards. Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? I would recommend Holstein to two types of hunters: 1. The experienced hunter that wants BIG trophies and is willing to pay extra for them. Gunther Sr. really knows every outfitter in Namibia and he knows which areas hold the largest of various species. I doubt there is anyone better at obtaining the big ones! 2. The hunter that is just looking at collecting some mature representatives of species that are at the Holstein ranch. If you are on a budget, I do NOT recommend leaving Holstein - it gets very pricey very fast. Be sure to get exact cost estimates up front, before leaving the ranch.

I think every Southern African Hunter should try Namibia. It is similar to South Africa, but definitely different. The country is sparsely settled, with a great variety of terrain and species. The actual hunting ranches tend to be larger than most in RSA - you seldom see a high fence! Some of their species are, on average, larger than you will get in RSA. Two disadvantages are: They do not have trackers. If you wound an animal, do not plan to find it. Their culture feels it is perfectly acceptable to talk in their native language, even with english speaking people around. It is somewhat disconcerting to not know what is going on while hunting, and to have limited opportunities to converse at dinner, etc. Be sure to bring a friend with you to help fill in the gaps.

Family run operation. Father - Gunther and his two boys are the PH's plus one additional external PH. PH quality is very good. Three-star lodge with six rooms all with private baths. Great food and service by staff. Area has lots of Cheetah and Black-faced Impala which could be hunted but not brought back to the U.S. We had another group from South Africa hunting Cheetah in the lodge. They were very successful also.

This hunt was booked through Al & Joyce Houston of Pathfinder Hunting. After poor experiences with other, bigger, more well known booking agents, dealing with Al & Joyce was a pleasant surprise. All facets of the trips went without a hitch. Plus Al & Joyce were in camp to make sure everything went well. Although I only harvested three animals in 14 days, I passed on dozens if not hundreds of animals of numerous species daily. As I have harvested many of the more common species available, I was looking only for a few species or only an extremely large specimen of previously harvested animals. The only animal that was booked that was not taken was a leopard. But both the outfitter and booking agent advised me before the hunt that May was far from the best time for booking a leopard hunt in Namibia.
