ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL

I hunted with Henik Lake Adventures in May 2012. The first evening of the trip we had dinner with Ryan St. John, who owns the company, and then stayed the night in a hotel while waiting for the morning's adventures. Travel was by snow machines. Within the first 20 minutes of leaving town, we had one of our machines break down. Being an avid snowmobiler myself, I know what a good machine is and what isnt, and his equipment was very good. Things like this can happen for unforeseen reasons. Within 30 minutes, we had another machine and were back on the trail. We were fighting against rain and had to set up camp much earlier in the day than was originally planned; we all figured it was better than getting soaked. The following days were mostly cloudy.

For the next 4 days, we traveled on dry land and snow and at times were crossing frozen lakes and rivers. We were forced to leave another snow machine on the trail when it too broke down, which I attribute to the fact that we were using them not only on snow, but on dry land as they are not intended. We were forced to repair our machines numerous times since we were beating them to death across the rugged tundra. Mother Nature didn't provide us with ample snow. It was the first year in decades of such dry conditions.

We were in pursuit of Caribou knowing once we had found the Caribou, we would find wolf packs. We saw few to no Caribou, however due to the determination of our Inuit guides, we forged on. We finally found some scare Caribou but time was running out, so we all came to the joint conclusion to call the trip short and began headed back to town via a frozen river route.

With several days left in our hunt, we came across Ryan St. John (owner of Henik Lake Adventures) who was already traveling toward us to assist with the elusive wolfs. He had several trail cabins we could rest up in. As is evident among hunters, weather can play a major role in the trip. With fog so thick that our travel was limited and a lack of snow to travel on, our trip was fading rather quickly. As it turns out, this was one of the worst snowfalls on record. At the conclusion of the trip, we showered at Ryans house and then had lunch before our return home.

Although the hunt proved unsuccessful, I was taken care of from the moment I stepped off the plane. If youve never hunted in the far North and are planning to in the near future, be sure to bring with you an EMENSE amount of patience as no one is in a hurry. A 7:00am scheduled time could easily turn into 9:00am; 10 minutes could turn into an hour. Although, this could be considered a good thing since life back at the office is too busy.

Ryans determination to fulfill our dreams of hunting a wolf went beyond what I would consider most outfitters to have done. He lost two machines out of the four we started with and tore up two travel sleds, but was willing to march on. Our lack of success was not his fault by any means. He graciously offered my hunting buddy and I a return trip next year, all expenses paid by him, including airfare. This is unheard of in the hunting industry.

Its difficult to compliment a hunting trip that ends unsuccessful, such as this one, which ended poorly due to unpredictable weather. However, to find an outfitter that is as determined in finding you a wolf as you are, is rewarding. Im already counting the days to next years trip. We will be hunting with Ryan as our personal guide.

Before booking this hunt, I shopped other outfitters extensively at the SCI Show, on the Internet and via phone calls. I had determined that his success rate was at almost 100% over the past 8 years. He was the obvious choice for my wolf hunt and my desire to hunt by snow machines. I take my hat off to Ryan St. John for this return offer. Look for my story next year of our successful hunt.

~Russell Brines

Bare-bones camp--sleeping pads and caribou hides on the ground in a tent, shared with three other hunters. Not atypical for the North. Guides are Inuit and good people. Food plain. Have good COLD weather gear, especially boots. Not as bitter cold, though, as spring muskox.

Ryan St. John has done an excellent job of setting up an Arctic camp. He understands what a hunters needs are and does what it takes to do the right thing. Having a full time cook in camp is much better than having a guide cook after he's already been working all day. Great food, fresh fruit for breakfast, salads for dinner and homemade desserts with ice cream. Clean warm accommodations with a friendly crew. It was a true Arctic adventure. I plan on booking a wolf and wolverine hunt with Ryan.

GAME DESCRIPTION
Major Game Animals Taken: Bear, Polar - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: 9 foot 8 inch squared.
Game Sought But Not Taken:
Game Condition Comments: I saw over 60 bears be six days of hunting, numerous sows with cubs. The bears that were shot had two to three inches of fat on them indicating that they were healthy and were eating well during summer months with no ice on Hudson Bay.

SERVICE RATINGS (excellent, good, fair or poor)
Quality of Outfit: Excellent Guide/PH Ability: Excellent
Condition of Camp: Excellent Condition of Equipment: Good
Quality of Food: Good Trophy Care: Excellent
Name of Airline: United Airlines and Calm Air Airline Service: Fair
Airline Comments: Calm Air staff was very accommodating to help us get all bags to Arviat. Calm Air policy limits bag weight and you get one priority bag out of Winnipeg so you might have to wait for all your bags to arrive on other flights if your flight is full, also you cannot pack ammo in your gun case so if your gun case is the priority bag you may get your gun but no ammo.

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt: None.
Highlights of Hunt: Watching polar bears every day. Stalking up close to several bears. Good camp atmosphere. Seeing the Inuit people derive so much genuine pleasure from a successful hunt.
Equipment Recommendations: Good Arctic clothing, feet and hand warmers.
Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes
Why? There are plenty of bears and the outfitter has absolutely got Arctic travel and hunting figured out. Ryan sees to it that the hunters are comfortable and taken care of.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
I have been apprehensive about hunting in the arctic because I was concerned about the cold weather. Ryan St. John has the philosophy that he cannot do anything about the weather but he can schedule hunts when the weather is mild and he can give you the comforts that you would expect on less extreme hunts, i.e. warm dry living conditions to come back to every night, warm comfortable safe travel on the ice and a cook with good hot meals in camp. This was a great Arctic Adventure with a first class Arctic Outfitter.

Arrange for shipment of trophies ahead of time. The outfitter prepared the trophies but Northwest did not deliver. We had to get a Canadian taxidermist to arrange to ship antlers in 4-6 weeks. The outfitter helped with the taxidermist.

Hunting Experience: Equipment and accommodation very good. Plenty of caribou to look at. Transversing the tundra on 4 wheelers is very good and keeps you in touch with the caribou. An outstanding hunt to take a son or daughter on and not have to take them out of school. Experiencing the artic wildlife such as foxes, polar bears is a once in a life time experience. My son and I both took 2 caribou. 3 with muzzleloader and one with a 30-06. 3 double shovels. Could have easily had 4 if we were more patient.
Physical Condition: Very good.

Name of Airline: Calm Air. Airline Service: Poor
Airline Comments: Calm Air after being told that we hunters had a connecting charter flight elected to bump our baggage due to over weight. This not only happened to us,other hunters on this hunt had the same thing happen. This seems to be a Winnepeg departure problem as the return flight had the same circumstances. We explained we had connecting flights through customs and all our baggage arrived. If it had not be for the help of Page at Nanuq Lodge and her contacts with a certain person with First Air our luggage would not have gotten to us the next day being as it had been bumped again by Calm Air. I would warn anyone flying to any destination in Canada to think twice before booking with Calm Air.I would also recomend using Nanug Lodge as your Bed and Breakfast while in Rankin Inlet. Page and John are First Class!

This outfitter really goes above and beyond for their clients. Excellent food, dry, warm camps, good equipment, knowledge of area and its animals. I will be going muskox hunting in March with same outfitter, that alone should say a lot.

GAME DESCRIPTION
Major Game Animals Taken: Bear, Polar - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: Over 9 foot.
Game Sought But Not Taken:
Game Condition Comments: We saw lots of bears every day. The three hunters in camp shot 8, 9 and 10 foot bears and each bear had about 3 inches of fat here at the start of their seal hunting season.

SERVICE RATINGS (excellent, good, fair or poor)
Quality of Outfit: Excellent Guide/PH Ability: Excellent
Condition of Camp: Excellent Condition of Equipment: Excellent
Quality of Food: Excellent Trophy Care: Excellent
Name of Airline: American, United, Calm Air and Private Charter Airline Service: Excellent
Airline Comments: Excess baggage charges are unavoidable and somewhat arbitrary. Each of the three hunters were charged wildly varying amounts.

Trophy Fees: Amount: $0
Permits/Licenses: Amount: $800
Commercial Airfares: Amount: $1982
Charter Airfares: Amount: $2000
Other Costs: Hunt tax, hotel, tips, cabs, excess baggage. Amount: $2847
Total: $0

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt: None logistically. We saw lots of unreachable bears on thin, unstable ice. We seemed to always be on the edge of dangerous ice and patience is key to finding a safe, stalkable bear. There is a real risk of losing a wounded bear to the water and tide.
Highlights of Hunt: The landscape is alien and beautiful. The food was excellent. Spot and stalk without dogs. Being on the edge of the ice and having a bear stalk me to within 15 yards, and then making a clean quick kill with a pass-through lung shot.
Equipment Recommendations: The coldest weather gear from Northern Outfitters and Cabelas works well. Ventilated, UV guard goggles are mandatory. My bow worked fine at 20 below with no special handling. I would recommend a personal locator beacon. A Sat phone is of little use in case the ice breaks off, which we saw happening every day.
Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes
Why? Ryan St. John wants to change the way hunters think about Arctic hunts and how they are conducted. On his first polar bear hunt he made a bold step towards achieving that goal. He has the bears, the experienced guides, the organzational skills and he executes a world class operation.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
I told Ryan St. John I did not want to shoot a bayed-up bear with dogs and I realized a spot and stalk Polar bear with archery equipment was a low percentage hunt. Ryan welcomed the challenge and assigned his uncle, James, to guide me for the ten day hunt. James guided Ryan on his first three bears and has hunted Polar Bears for more than thirty years, but had never taken an archer before. We joked that he pulled the short straw among the guides, but that suited James just fine. His English is excellent and he is an experienced, patient hunter. When the time came he was cool, thoughtful and restrained as the bear turned for him at about 12 yards instead of continuing bearing down on me. Once the arrow passed through the bear James showed restraint and didn't shoot even though the bear was running for thin ice and open water. Instead he asked whether he should shoot and I said "No". The bear made it another second or so and fell over dead. That was the last afternoon of a great ten day hunt made possible by Ryan and his crew at Henick Lake. It takes a huge amount of work and coordination to emplace a first year base camp and be 3 for 3 on Polar Bear your first time out of the gate. I enjoyed every bit of this hunt except for the three 1/2 snow days when we couldn't hunt - and even those days were made comfortable in a warm comfortable camp with excellent food.
