I hunted with Henik Lake Adventures in May 2012. The first evening of the trip we had dinner with Ryan St. John, who owns the company, and then stayed the night in a hotel while waiting for the morning's adventures. Travel was by snow machines. Within the first 20 minutes of leaving town, we had one of our machines break down. Being an avid snowmobiler myself, I know what a good machine is and what isnt, and his equipment was very good. Things like this can happen for unforeseen reasons. Within 30 minutes, we had another machine and were back on the trail. We were fighting against rain and had to set up camp much earlier in the day than was originally planned; we all figured it was better than getting soaked. The following days were mostly cloudy. For the next 4 days, we traveled on dry land and snow and at times were crossing frozen lakes and rivers. We were forced to leave another snow machine on the trail when it too broke down, which I attribute to the fact that we were using them not only on snow, but on dry land as they are not intended. We were forced to repair our machines numerous times since we were beating them to death across the rugged tundra. Mother Nature didn't provide us with ample snow. It was the first year in decades of such dry conditions. We were in pursuit of Caribou knowing once we had found the Caribou, we would find wolf packs. We saw few to no Caribou, however due to the determination of our Inuit guides, we forged on. We finally found some scare Caribou but time was running out, so we all came to the joint conclusion to call the trip short and began headed back to town via a frozen river route. With several days left in our hunt, we came across Ryan St. John (owner of Henik Lake Adventures) who was already traveling toward us to assist with the elusive wolfs. He had several trail cabins we could rest up in. As is evident among hunters, weather can play a major role in the trip. With fog so thick that our travel was limited and a lack of snow to travel on, our trip was fading rather quickly. As it turns out, this was one of the worst snowfalls on record. At the conclusion of the trip, we showered at Ryans house and then had lunch before our return home. Although the hunt proved unsuccessful, I was taken care of from the moment I stepped off the plane. If youve never hunted in the far North and are planning to in the near future, be sure to bring with you an EMENSE amount of patience as no one is in a hurry. A 7:00am scheduled time could easily turn into 9:00am; 10 minutes could turn into an hour. Although, this could be considered a good thing since life back at the office is too busy. Ryans determination to fulfill our dreams of hunting a wolf went beyond what I would consider most outfitters to have done. He lost two machines out of the four we started with and tore up two travel sleds, but was willing to march on. Our lack of success was not his fault by any means. He graciously offered my hunting buddy and I a return trip next year, all expenses paid by him, including airfare. This is unheard of in the hunting industry. Its difficult to compliment a hunting trip that ends unsuccessful, such as this one, which ended poorly due to unpredictable weather. However, to find an outfitter that is as determined in finding you a wolf as you are, is rewarding. Im already counting the days to next years trip. We will be hunting with Ryan as our personal guide. Before booking this hunt, I shopped other outfitters extensively at the SCI Show, on the Internet and via phone calls. I had determined that his success rate was at almost 100% over the past 8 years. He was the obvious choice for my wolf hunt and my desire to hunt by snow machines. Ryan St. John has done an excellent job of setting up an Arctic camp. He understands what a hunters needs are and does what it takes to do the right thing. Having a full time cook in camp is much better than having a guide cook after he's already been working all day. Great food, fresh fruit for breakfast, salads for dinner and homemade desserts with ice cream. Clean warm accommodations with a friendly crew. It was a true Arctic adventure. I plan on booking a wolf and wolverine hunt with Ryan.

Game Sought But Not Taken: Game Condition Comments: I saw over 60 bears be six days of hunting, numerous sows with cubs. The bears that were shot had two to three inches of fat on them indicating that they were healthy and were eating well during summer months with no ice on Hudson Bay.

I have been apprehensive about hunting in the arctic because I was concerned about the cold weather. Ryan St. John has the philosophy that he cannot do anything about the weather but he can schedule hunts when the weather is mild and he can give you the comforts that you would expect on less extreme hunts, i.e. warm dry living conditions to come back to every night, warm comfortable safe travel on the ice and a cook with good hot meals in camp. This was a great Arctic Adventure with a first class Arctic Outfitter.

Arrange for shipment of trophies ahead of time. The outfitter prepared the trophies but Northwest did not deliver. We had to get a Canadian taxidermist to arrange to ship antlers in 4-6 weeks. The outfitter helped with the taxidermist.

Plenty of caribou to look at. Transversing the tundra on 4 wheelers is very good and keeps you in touch with the caribou. An outstanding hunt to take a son or daughter on and not have to take them out of school. Experiencing the artic wildlife such as foxes, polar bears is a once in a life time experience. My son and I both took 2 caribou. 3 with muzzleloader and one with a 30-06. 3 double shovels. Could have easily had 4 if we were more patient. Physical Condition: Very good.

Major Game Animals Taken: Musk Ox - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: Good. Game Sought But Not Taken: Wolf - Availability: Just got tag in case I saw once, not known to be in area during this time of year. Game Condition Comments: Game appeared to be abundant with good quality.

Airline Service: Poor Airline Comments: Calm Air after being told that we hunters had a connecting charter flight elected to bump our baggage due to over weight. This not only happened to us,other hunters on this hunt had the same thing happen.This seems to be a Winnepeg departure problem as the return flight had the same circumstances. We explained we had connecting flights through customs and all our baggage arrived. If it had not be for the help of Page at Nanuq Lodge and her contacts with a certain person with First Air our luggage would not have gotten to us the next day being as it had been bumped again by Calm Air. I would warn anyone flying to any destination in Canada to think twice before booking with Calm Air.I would also recomend using Nanug Lodge as your Bed and Breakfast while in Rankin Inlet. Page and John are First Class!
