All carriers were part of the United Star Alliance network. They all left on time, and had good service. The itinerary I chose however proved grueling, and travelers should avoid the South African - Washington route that stops in Dakar. VERY VERY LONG! |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
Exceptional organization with outstanding PH, trackers, and support staff. No problems, hunt exceeding all expectations. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Stalking to within 15 yards of 10 old dugga boys and taking a giant 41 plus inch bull. Taking super trophy warthog. A genuine first class operation but can be demanding. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Good quality safari shirts, preferably those that can roll up at sleeves and pants light enough to allow silent movement yet strong enough to shed thorns. A good pair of binoculars - at least 8x-10x. Follow Harloo packing instructions. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
Yes |
| Why? |
This is a classic, fair chase hunt and I mean hunt. Traditional stalking with the true "old time" African-style experience. |

 |
|
The Kwa Zulu area is not only one of the most famed hunting areas in Africa; it is also one of the most historically significant areas relavant to South African history. Harloo borders Swaziland, and is very close to Mozambique. It was also once part of the Pongala Game Reserve; the oldest park of its kind in the world next to Yellowstone - even predating Kruger National Park. Harloo is a true African wilderness that can offer the first time African hunter a choice of Big 5 species to most plains game. The abundance and quality of game is exceptional, with truely super-trophy animals available to those with the patience and discipline to put in some effort. This can be hard hunting, and at times you feel like you're in the middle of 19th Century Africa. There is tiger-fish fishing nearby in Lake Jozini, deep sea fishing in the Indian Ocean, and battlefields of the Boer-Zulu and British-Zulu wars if you want to break away from the hunting - which is rare! You can't go wrong with this hunting organization. It is certainly not the biggest, but it IS one of the best. Can't wait to go back.

My wife, a past non-hunter, took her first game, a zebra after 7 stalks and now truly respects this worthy animal, especially in the bush veld. Seeing and stalking to within 30-yards of a massive Cape buffalo with incredible "attitude". One shot kill with a .458 Lott and hearing the death bellow, which still sends shivers down my spine. Taking great nyala, blue wildebeest in the bush. Traveling to the high veld as part of the Reno package to see other game and experience "High Veld" distance shooting. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Heavier bullet weight for caliber given lots of bush. Gaiters due to bushveld tick population, seeds, twigs, etc. |

One of my best hunts ever. Brian & Edmond made us feel comfortable at once. My wife, who had never been on a hunt, was "willing to go" at first, but afterwards, expressed her enjoyment and looks to return. |

As seen in other reports on Harloo, this is a first class operation. First, on booking, Edmond is very accommodating and displays a "can do" attitude. There was an immense amount of e-mail traffic & information coming in from Edmond prior to the hunt to assist with all planning. As I was traveling with my wife and 2 sons (10 & 8), we added days to visit Kruger & Swaziland; the details of which were arranged by Edmond. I was met at JNB by Brian Suddaby who was our PH and is very pleasant and warm. During our 4+-hour drive to camp, Brian was very engaging and we jointly set out on a plan to accommodate our expectations (primarily plains game, but also I had a Cape buffalo on a trophy fee basis in case I saw a "big one"). The camp is outstanding. A private chalet with private showers, bath & tub (with adjoining bunk room for the kids) was our home for 2+ weeks. The boma where had evening sundowners and meals was equally as inviting. Food was also truly special. Salmon pate' for dinner in the bush? South African impala meat pie? I requested to Edmond in advance (as he requested of me during one of our e-mail exchanges) that our dinners include game that we had taken for the benefit of my sons, and the meals were excellent (OK: the Cape buffalo backstrap ground meatballs from a 12-14 year old dagga bull was not the best meal I had ever had. However, I was the one who requested buffalo on the menu and they did the best that could possibly have been done!). Harloo is a ~10,000 acre concession (over 3 x 9 miles), but they only take one hunt party at a time...Great variation in areas with open areas, mountains/hills and thick bush.. Excellent game management practices were in display, and you literally have the concession to yourself. Of interest, we cut our Kruger trip short as our attitude was that after seeing elephant & lion, everything else (including rhino) we could see at Harloo in our private concession without a million other cars around. Also, my wife pointed out that the Harloo impala were actually bigger in body & horns than in Kruger; a true statement. This is a bushveld hunt, on foot with alot of stalking. Shots are in the 20-50 yard range. To see outside the bushveld, the package included a hunt on the High-Veld about 90-minutes drive for Blesbok & I took a red hartebeest on trophy fee basis. My wife summed it up best, "Harloo was hunting (with the staking & close shots), while the High veld is shooting" (Average range for my two trophies was 215 yards). My buffalo is magnificent (did I say that before?). It likely measures in the 38-inch range looking at the spread in relation to the ears, however it has some of the largest & thickest bosses I have ever seen in books, video, etc. and I never bothered to measure it. Edmond jokingly told me that he will not put this photo into his brochure as then everyone will expect similar! As stated before, Brian has an excellent way with younger hunters. Having younger children, he has patience and displays a commitment to their success. My trackers, Eric (#1) and Albert (#2) displaed the same "can do" approach with the three 1st time hunters in my family (my wife & two sons). As another example of Brian's commitment to success, we were at our last hunting day and I decided to give my sons a chance at warthogs. However, with time running out, we needed to do same from a blind looking over water holes (the only hunt we did from a blind) as these wary animals are challenging to take. My problem is that my 2 sons were sharing a Rossi 243 Winchester single shot, so how to give both a chance recognizing their recoil concerns? Brian called his personal friend, Phillip, who gave up his day to join the group with his 243 Winchester and give a 8 & 10 year old a once in a lifetime opportunity so we could stake out 2 separate blinds. The end result: 2 nice hogs taken by 2 sons within 15 minutes of each other! To sum up the entire experience, my open minded wife was initially "willing to go" when I booked this hunt in Reno in late January, but afterwards who told me that she had a phenomonal time and looks forward to a return, likely in 2010.

Bought this hunt at Reno, for a very good price, the nyal and impala included. I've listed the regular cost in my report. It wuld have been easy to have me shoot an inferior animal, but it was refreshing to see someone not take the easy way out. PH was willing to work hard to take great mature trophies.

When I decided back in 2005 to finally make the plunge and travel to Africa for the first time I went to the SCI convention in Reno to evaluate outfitters. I don't recall what attracted me to Harloo's booth - it may have been their understated presence or perhaps the brilliant smile of Jackie Rouillard, Edmond Rouillards' charming wife. In either case I spoke with them at some length, again in 2006 in Reno, finally striking the deal in 2007. Traveling by myself via Amsterdam to Joberg I was greeted on arrival by Edmond and whisked through customs and gun inspection. As it was almost midnight when I arrived due to inevitable airport delay we stayed in a small lodge in Pretoria. Waking the next morning we traveled about five hours by car to the small agricultural town of Pongola in Kwa Zulu Natal on the Swaziland border where Harloo Safaris 9,000- acre game farm is located.
As a first time African hunter I did not know what quite to expect but what I received was complete care, comfort, good food and excellent hunting. Glassing the ridges with Brian the PH plus two excellent scouts we identified game stalked and made the kill if the animals were acceptable to Brian's high standards rather than mine (I had asked for good animals rather than insisting of some arbitrary record level). I made a poor shot on a wildebeest and despite tracking for a couple of days was not able to bag; this was the only disappointment of the hunt and certainly not the fault of the staff. In addition to the nyala, wildebeest, impala and kudu I shot, Harloo has any number of other species available either at the main reserve or on other nearby concessions including a sizable number of Cape buffalo.
The lodge and staff was first class as was the endless amount of food. Edmond Rouillard, his wife as well as other family members and friends joined us for meals and campfire chats so I very much felt like a friend rather than just a client. One aspect of the hunt Edmond had not mentioned was that the only bring in one party at a time and as I was a party of one I had the place to myself.
I had an excellent time and am planning on returning to Harloo as early as 2009. I understand that good nyala are somewhat scarce. Based on my beginner's observations I would say that Harloo has substantial populations of these beautiful animals. All in all I very much recommend Harloo to beginners and the veteran alike if for no other reason that the Rouillard's take the desires of their clients much to heart and do everything they can to ensure a wonderful hunt.
