of Hunt: |
shooting a hippo at 90 yards in the water after a long wait; not an easy hunt. Waiting for 30 minutes for my leopard to stand up; which he never did. Clive finally gave the go ahead as he was concerned about the wind shifting as it was almost 7am. I aimed right behind the shoulder layed over. Clive said shoot again. Dead with the first shot. What a way to start day 13 on a 14 day safari.Left time to do so tiger fishing, landed 3 with the biggest waying 8 lbs. |

Recommendations: |
I discussed with Larry at Superior Ammo what bullet he would recommend for leopold when hunting with a 375. He said his first choice is 300 grain Hawk SN. Based on how it performed on my leopold he was spot on. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
yes |
| Why? |
The chance to hunt leopold with a member of the first family of leopold Clive Hallamore was special. Camp is on cliff above the lake. All of the crew were very professional, friendly and capable. The skinning of my leopold was first rate. Already booked for lion with Clive in 2015. |

Amazing how much plains game we saw! We did not shot the first tuskless we saw, because she was not fully adult and had only about the size of a hippo (description of the PH) After we got the leopard, we had only 4 days left and the 2nd tuskless we saw did not cooperate. We saw all the major species you can hunt there, including lion and a leopard. Booked again for next year.

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
FYI...I received the "Hand" Letter 1 day prior to leaving for my African safari with HHK Safaris. I really was not too concerned since I had met and visited with several people associated with HHK at both the SCI and DSC conventions. My first impression of HHk was very good, and at the completion of my hunt my first impression was indeed correct. I found nothing in the "Hand" letter that remotely resembled my hunt, and I question the motive behind such a bitter and vindictive outcry.
Since my return I have read the rebuttal letter from the PH that guided Mr. Hand. There is always the other side to the story, and this case, I would have to side with the PH. Seven days is a pretty short buffalo hunt, and anyone who has hunted buffalo realizes it takes a lot time and walking. I have killed 7 buffalo and none have come quick and easy.
During my safari, HHK headquarters kept in touch with our camp and updated us on any additional permits that become available in our concession. Bull elephant became available and we hunted elephant for 6 days. We were not successful, but did see over 50 elephant and some smaller bulls. My PH (Lou Hallamore) was the best I have ever experienced on 5 safaris. The ultimate professional, and someone I will definitely hunt with again.
Also present in camp was a HHK camp superintendent who was responsible for inspecting the camps and keeping them up to high standards. Our camp was an older facility but very nice and certainly well maintained. The food was above excellent and I gained 8 lbs despite walking 10 - 14 miles daily. My wife was greatly impressed with the food and the overall quality of the camp facilities and equipment. She has accompanied me on all of our African safaris and we have experienced some sub-par food and quarters. Not this trip, everything went on schedule and there was no surprises. We would give HHK the very highest recommendation.
Feel free to contact me on any facet of my safari.

Condition Comments: |
Lion was a big, mature male. After shooting the lion in Matetsi Unit 3, we moved to Chirisa. I only need a leopard to complete the Big Five, so the next 3 weeks was dedicated to the leopard. Leopards were hitting our multiple baits, but not during legal shooting hours. it was my decision not to pursue elephant and buffalo so we could concentrate on the leopard. Buffalo and elephant were abundant in Chirisa, but I have already taken those animals on prior safaris, so it became a dedicated leopard hunt. It turns out the next hunter shot the big Tom we were working on. That's hunting. Including baits, we shot 20 animals in total. The PH (who I have hunted with on a number of prior occasions ) was superb, the camps and food were excellent and they even had my favorite brand of bourbon on hand. I cannot fault HHK or Anthony regarding not shooting a leopard. They all worked very hard and left nothing undone. We had 11 baits up. It was just hunting luck that our baits weren't being hit during legal shooting hours. We hunted hard and it was still a great safari. |

Bruce from Gracey Travel met me at Joberg and rifle importation was a snap. The next morning, Bruce put me on an SAA flight to Victoria, where I was met at the airport by Anthony. |

Shooting a record book mature male African lion (in Matetsi). The magnificence of Chirisa, which is breathtakingly pristine and beautiful. Hunting dangerous game with my friend, PH Anthony Crick. |

HHK and Safaris Unlimited are real professionals and quite accommodating. Theirs is a first class operation in every way. The concessions are magnificent and both Matetsi Unit 3 and Chirisa are game rich environments. |

This was a good hunt even with the lack of male leopard activity. The Cape buffalo were numerous and we got within excellent range of many trophy class bulls. Plains game also were readily available but I did not have much interest in plains game. The PH was excellent and he and the trackers worked very hard to produce results. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
Lack of leopard. It was warm, everything was green and there was more water than ever experienced in the area which gave the intial advantage to the game. It may have helped the leopard obtain kills also which would have been direct competition with our baits. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Taking a quality Cape buffalo bull and getting within 15-40 yards of several other trophy bulls. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
We went in May and the weather was much warmer than expected. We had no need for any warm clothing (shorts, light jacket and light footwear was all that was required.) It is remote so you need to be prepared but HHK provides a very detailed list of essentials just in case you need them. |
| Would You

It is remote and free ranging. It is a good hunt with good buffalo and plains game. The PH and staff are professional, worked hard and were very qualified. |

This was my first hunt in Zimbabwe. It had been recommended by a friend who had hunted with Ross last year. The leopard hunting was tough and we did not get a leopard, but it was for a lack of trying. We had buffalo around us just about everyday and because I took my bull early in the hunt I decided to take a female also just to get another stalk in. There were elephants very close every day, hyenas in camp at night, as well as tiger fishing and good plains game hunting as well. A good experience and I would not hestitate to return to hunt with Ross and HHK.

There was a total lack of game on the tiny concession. Evidence existed that elephant had been in the concession but later learned that they simply come over from an adjacent concessions. Hunting is much akin to sitting in a bucket hoping for animals to come by and take a drink...in an area where adjacent giant concessions have rivers and pans full of water. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
The hunt was sold by HHK/Safaris Unlimited (their national representative) in a way that was a gross misrepresentation at best. Never in the material was it indicated that we would hunt on a concession, the entire boundary of which could be driven in 1.5 hours. We drove the same boundary road each day (twice a day) for the four days that we stayed. We were ready to leave after the second day knowing that we had been deceived. Our camp was inside a high fenced game ranch. This was not stated in any material and is not what I would consider a dangerous game atmosphere. We spent more time at the lodge than in the field as a result of the fact that the concession was so small and there was no game in the area. The more you drove the single road, the more you would pressure the area and preclude any elephants from coming. On these drives, we saw virtually no game. The game had moved out of the tiny concession (I estimate at less than 20,000 acres). All attempts to remedy the problem and move to another adjacent concession were thwarted by the home office. They put up road blocks at every option. This is an organization run by Graham whose input seems to be required for any action. He either stonewalled or refused to help at all. On the 4th day, the only offer was to have us drive 10 hours in the high rack of the Land Cruiser (in 95 degree heat) to Omay. This would have us having lost 2 hunting days and reduced our hunt to basically a 3 or 4 day buffalo hunt. A friend of mine had been in the same concession and was lucky enough to see an elephant bull and did shoot him. It was the only bull he saw and it was walking out of the concession. He indicated that it was the only bull he saw in 10 days. We met the hunters in the other concession who were seeing 10-15 bulls per day and explained our plight. They said that they had no issue if we got our permit transferred to their concession and hunted there. No effort was made because one of the PHs in that area (Lou Hallamore with HHK) did not want us in the area because he told us that it would pressure the 1,000,000 acres excessively. It is ironic that Lou told us this despite driving our boundary road (the only real area we had to hunt) repeatedly thereby ruining our chances to get elephant to move in to our mere 20,000 acres. A more detailed letter of all matters has been submitted to The Hunt Report and I recommend that you request the letter and read it in detail. |

I have attempted at all times to get Graham to respond. We stayed in Victoria Falls for 4 days and Graham has yet to respond nor has Jennifer Ryan, The national representative for HHK Safaris. My sense is that they will continue to ignore this matter and simply expect it to go away. This will not be the case.
Initial email from Mike Axelrad:
My name is Mike Axelrad. I am a subscriber. I am sitting in a hotel in Victoria Falls because for the first time in my life, I had to quit a hunt. The trip was a misrepresentation from the get go. I bought an elephant hunt (on a special advertised by Greg Rodriguez at Global Adventure Outfitters) that was told to me to be the Riverside concession which was part of Deka. I arrived to find that we were staying on a fenced game farm and that it took about an hour to drive the entire perimeter of the concession. We saw a couple of elephants but it was apparent that they came in at night and left. There were no elephant bulls and no sign. Repeated efforts by my PH (Richard Schultz) to salvage the situation were thwarted by the manager for HHK....Graham Hingeston. This was the worst hunting experience of my career, the cameraman's career, the PH and the trackers. The home office provided no support and little help to get us moved. On the 5th day they did offer us a trip to Omay which would have involved 10 hours (one way) in the land cruiser in the high rack! The hunters in Deka, indicated that they had no problem with us going to Deka (we were happy with a 40 pounder....they wanted 60). Lou Hallamore killed that by saying he wanted no pressure (this despite the fact that he incessantly drove our boundary) and then said that there was sign that elephants were coming into our postage stamp. We hunted 2 hours a day because there was no sign and the area was simply too small and it was never represented that it was a postage stamp......maybe 20-30,000 acres. Elephants have been killed there (my friend shot a 45 pounder 10 days earlier) but this area is a crap shoot at best. Also disturbing is the fact that elephant carcasses are sold to croc farms! This is clearly not a proper use of such a majestic animal. I will complete a proper form and write a complete letter upon my return.......but hunters considering this outfitter should be wary......CAVEAT EMPTOR!
Subsequent email from Mike Axelrad:
My name is Mike Axelrad. I am writing this email to express my extreme disappointment (understatement of the millenium) with the elephant "hunt" that your company sold me.
Upon my arrival, I was put off to find that I was staying in a high fenced area in a safari lodge, the type one might stay on one's first plains game hunt in South Africa, not what was expected on a Big 5 (elephant hunt). At the outset, I told my PH, Richard Schultz that elephant was number one on my priority list, not leopard. Notwithstanding this statement, we immediately set about finding leopard bait. The first real day of the hunt, we drove outside the fence into Riverside. After 10 or 15 minutes, it was apparent that elephants HAD been in the area. We covered all of the springs the camp manager told Richy about and found no sign fresher than a week old. This took less than 1 hour.
We then drove up the hill into Option and did see a small herd of cows and later one single small bull. Our drive in Option lasted 1 hour. At this point we drove around looking for leopard bait and then went to the lodge whereupon a problem ensued regarding our ability to hunt Option. It took a day to sort that out but at that point, we had figured out what an incredibly tiny concession this was and what a huge misrepresentation this had been. In retrospect, it is curious that your website is silent about Riverside/Option.
The next day we drove the springs and Option.....this took 1.5 hours. On this and all subsequent drives, there was virtually no game other than the odd kudu, occasional klipsringer or grysbok. I am quite certain we saw the same animals everyday because we drove the EXACT same road of this tiny concession. On many of these drives, we would encounter Lou Hallamore driving the entirety of our boundary road adjoining Deka. I suspect that Lou was trying to keep the driving within his concession to a minimum while foresaking ours. I later learned that elephant become sensitive to safari car traffic and leave. When this happened, there were no elephant left on our tiny concession that took about 1.5 hours drive the entire boundary. The animals did come, came from Deka, drank at night and left.
We drove this same route morning and night and each time came to a dirty, dingy water hole in the hopes that elephant would come. The reality was that the fire in Matetsi Unit 4 had pushed the elephant and game that my friend Mike Carbone saw into Riverside for a very brief time. They all immediately left our tiny concession when it rained in Deka. If you try to assert that this is hunting, I would argue that no one explained that the hunt was a major gamble. If there are elephant in the concession great. If not.....well, you can just cool your heels in the swimming pool. Had that been explained, I would never have wasted two weeks of my life and the countless thousands of dollars to have been put through this emotional roller coaster.
Having figured out that there were no elephant, my PH tried to get us to another concession in the area.....Deka or Matetsi. There was no support from you or your office. We kept hearing that no permits were available in Matetsi and yet noone other than Richey seemed to understand that our permit was fully transferrable to Matetsi. One day, in Deka (where we did see a shootable bull) we ran across one of the hunters with George. We explained our plight and we said he was more than happy to have us come over and hunt in Deka. We were very excited that evening. Then no one from your organization did anything to help. Noone went to Parks and Wildlife to see if we could transfer our permit because everyone was waiting for Graham......and he apparently never bothered to weigh in to help. The only alternative we got was Omay (a 10 hour drive). At this point we were into about day 4-5 and Richey was not certain of hunting Omay during this period also, 10 hours in the back of a Landcruiser in 95 degree heat was not viable.
Our next plan was Matetsi, but we lost the entire weekend waiting on your permission but apparently, you were much to busy to care to lift a finger to help. With each plan came excitement only to be dashed by your inaction. The coup de grace was the last day when Lou, indicated that there was sign of elephant in Option. That was not true. Lou stated the night before that he did not want us in Deka because it was too much traffic for the 700,000 acres. It is ironic, that when he told us that, he was in front of us in his Landcruiser busily driving the boundary of our tiny 20,000 acres. There were elephants, cows.....and they came in at night to drink and quickly left.
This is a small taste of our hunt. In the end, someone in your organization failed to reveal the fact that the concession is tiny and that an elephant hunt there is a major gamble.....more so than on any other normal concession. I could have accepted driving different roads in a large concession (say 35 times larger...which is what we computed that Deka is in relation to Riverside/Option) only to find no elephants, but driving the exact road twice a day for 1.5 hours each is not hunting, especially not elephant hunting where one expects to stalk numerous bulls before deciding to take one (or pass if that is his/her choice).
Your PH, the cameraman and the tracker all acknowledged that this was the worst situation they had ever been placed in and there was no support from you our your organization. Ultimately, we could not take the frustration and left. This was simply NOT an elephent hunt. It was more akin to sitting in a small bucket hoping an elephant would come in to drink when they had choices of lakes/pans and rivers to drink from on a giant concession..
Based on the foregoing, I expect a complete refund of my deposit, $4000 for my plane tickets (for my friend and I), $150 for the hotel in Johannesburg and, $500 for the hotel in Vic Falls, $600 for all of the medicines and Dr appointments in anticipation of this trip, $700 for the food, fees and miscellaneous amounts expended. This will in no way compensate us for the dashed dreams, hurt and embarrasment caused by this fiasco.
Are you aware that it is I who put Mike Carbone on his trip? I had four other hunters ready to come based on my report.
Graham, you have stonewalled enough on this matter. In these tough economic times, I would have thought that you would have welcomed any hunter willing to spend the money to come here. Instead, you chose to simply ignore the matter when it was apparent there was a problem. Understand, I WILL NOT SIMPLY GO AWAY!
Rebuttal from Graham Hingston of HHK Safaris:
I am in receipt of your letter and I am sorry you feel this way about your safari, I apologize for the lateness in my reply as our e-mail here in Chikwenya has been down for the past 5 days. I had to come in to take over due to an family emergency of our manager who had to leave suddenly - consequently I have been out of contact for the past 5 days.. I do believe I need to answer your complaints and also put in perspective the safari.
1) Mike we sell the riverside/option area elephant hunts at almost half the cost our our regular elephant hunts - we do this for the simple reason that the area is 1) small and 2) is reliant on elephant moving in from the neighbouring Matetsi and Deka concessions. This fact was very clearly communicated to Greg Rodriguez and that was the prime reason we offer this hunt at a substantially reduced rate. It is my understanding that our US office did not deal directly with you but through Greg Rodriguez and Greg's office should have communicated this information to you, we were very clear with him as to the aspects of the hunt and I reiterate this is why we sell these hunts for less than half of a normal elephant safari.
Just prior to your arrival there was plenty of elephant movement in the area as can be confirmed by Mr. Carbone, it was also extremely unfortunate that completely out of season we had a heavy downpour of rain which also resulted in the elephant moving out of the area. We at HHK can hardly be held to account here for that.
2) You make a comment that no effort was made to try and accommodate you elsewhere - nothing can be further from the truth - we made every effort to accommodate you else where - as HHK we have two other areas in Matetsi - one being Unit 3 and one being Deka next door to where you hunted.
Not-with-standing the fact that your hunt was booked at a cheap rate we still tried to accommodate you elsewhere on the same deal - what more could you expect us to do.
Please understand that all hunting concessions in Zimbabwe are strictly quotarised as to the number of animals that can be hunted each year, be it a duiker or an elephant bull we get allocated an annual quota per concession and we cannot hunt more than that quota in each area. Clients specifically book to hunt certain areas and pay accordingly.
Our quota in Unit 3 is completely sold for the year and we did not have a spare permit there. In Deka we had two other clients hunting elephant there whilst you were at Riverside and we could not move you there. I personally phoned Ian Gloss who runs Unit 4 and he advised me that he had no spare permits. We then tried to change your option area permit to hunt it in Unit 3 or 4, National Parks refused to do that. As a last resort i offered to move you to the Omay concession at the same rate and deal you were on at Riverside - you refused to go. I am not exactly sure what else you expected us to do!
3) I am not sure where you get a figure of 700,000 acres for Deka, where Lou Hallamore was hunting - the concession is 120,000 acres in size. Irrespective of this your hunt was not booked in Deka it was booked in Riverside, the clients Lou had hunting with him were paying for a full rate elephant safari to have the privilege to hunt that concession in addition they had booked the area exclusively for themselves and it would be extremely unprofessional of me to allow another hunter onto the concession, particularly when that hunter was paying half of what they were. I will of course also forward to Lou Hallamore, your comments with regards to him lying. Lou is one of the most respected professional hunters in Africa and he would have no cause to lie to you, if anything he was trying to assist you.
4) I have asked Richie Schultz to write me a full report as to exactly what he said to you with regards to this being the worst situation he has been placed in and will revert once I have heard back from him.
5) Mike - I have not stonewalled on this issue, I take exception to your inference in this regard. Please be assured I am more than willing to stand before the Dallas Safari Club, The Houston Safari Club, SCI and the Hunting Report, I have all the e-mails from the the commencement of you booking this hunt, whereby you clearly requested a deal safari - and were not prepared to book into an A grade safari area at the normal prices, instead you chose to hunt a cheap deal and now when it did not work out the way you hoped you resort to threats. I see Mike Carbone, who hunted the same area and shot a very nice elephant bull has made no such complaints. I also cannot believe that prior to your safari. having known Mr. Carbone had just come back from a hunt there that you did not call him and discuss the area and the hunt.
6) I was on skype and e-mail numerous times to Richie Schultz whilst you were with him firstly trying to organise the elephant in Omay - which you did not want to go to - that was your decision, then advising that we could do nothing about trying to move your permit until the Monday, this being a friday. I am happy to send you a trasncript of the conversations and you will see from the transcript there you personally make the statement - I do not want to go to Omay, you did not want the long drive, I then said what about chartering there and you said you did not want to charter there. You then said you only wanted to hunt in Matetsi and if this was not possible then you would rather go home with no hard feelings as you were aware this was a hit and miss safari before you came.
I will also like to say that I am always happy to work with a client when he is not happy with a safari - we at HHK pride ourselves in making sure our clients are happy, we have been in this business a very long time and have not built our reputation and business around being deceitful to hunters.
Rebuttal from Greg Rodriguez of Global Adventure Outfitters:
First, I'd like to say how sorry I am Mike did not have a good hunt. I run a small, boutique agency, so I know all my clients very well and consider most, including Mike, friends. Mike is a great guy and an ethical hunter. Refunds and apologies can't lessen the anger and disappointment of his hunt-of-a-lifetime going bad, but I'm afraid that, and my take on the other parties' comments, are all I have to offer.
I have booked safaris with HHK since 2002 with great success. As we do with all our outfitters, I have hunted with HHK three times to insure their operation meets our standards. They always have. However, because they have so many areas, I have not hunted all of them.
When I sold Mike the hunt, we did not know it was basically a pot-luck hunt. We believed it was a late-season or cancellation special, which is how it was labeled in the subject line of the e-mail I received with the offer. My entire business is based on repeat clients. I would never knowingly sell a hunt with such a high likelihood of resulting in a disappointed client.
I found out in July that the area was high-fenced. I told Jennifer in the US office that Mike Axlerad would not hunt a high-fenced property and she said she'd get back with me. Later, I received an e-mail from Graham saying Mike would be staying in Deka, not the high-fenced area. After re-reading the e-mail today, I noticed that it said /staying/, not /hunting/. However, Mike also had a leopard on quota in Deka and it was our understanding from our conversations with Jennifer that he would have quota available to him in the Deka, Riverside, and Option areas. This is not unusual, as two seasons ago, one of our clients went on the same hunt at about the same time and was moved to Deka because of rain (or the lack thereof). He took a fine elephant bull as well as a tuskless cow, a buffalo, and some plains game. So, after talking with Jennifer and looking at the quota, we believed he would be hunting all 3 areas and could take a buffalo, elephant, leopard, and a full bag of plains game. It was a great deal, but it didn't seem out of the ordinary because we often see great end-of-season deals like that, especially in this economy.
I am not sure where the wires got crossed on this, but they clearly did. The net result is Mike wasted a significant amount of money and time chasing elephants where there were none. I am not sure what was or was not done on the ground to rectify this while Mike was in Zimbabwe as I was not there nor was I privy to the internal conversations among the HHK staff, but it clearly wasn't enough to fix the problem. Mike contacted us on the third day of his hunt and we immediately contacted HHK's Zimbabwean and US offices to see if we could assist but we didn't get anywhere.
Considering the disappointment and the two precious weeks of his time Mike lost, I am not sure this situation can be rectified to anyone's satisfaction. I have issued a check for the money we held in escrow and will give that to Mike when I meet with him this week. I know that cannot make up for the money he's still out or the lost time and aggravation, but it's the best I can do.

This was a family safari for our son's graduation from High School (good excuse, right). Having my wife shoot her sable and having our son experience and taste the Dark Continent for his first time was the best experience one could ask for. Booked this hunt as a buffalo, sable and plains game 3 years ago. Saw all kinds of game and had an excellent safari. Highly recommend Paul Barstad, HHK Safaris, and Kathi at Wild Travel. We traveled with friends, overnighted in Johanessburg at the Afton Guest House and spent a night at Victoria Falls (Ilala Lodge) a must see. Our friends hunted and filled their tags. All had a grand safari. PH's worked well together. Trackers were excellent and the camp staff were great.

Watching three female lions and three yearlings destroy $1,100 worth of bait in about one hour. Backing away with calm but determination from a very over curious bull elephant with both tail and trunk in an unfriendly position. |

Avon Skin So Soft Insect repellant. Bug net that fits over hat. Possibly new "bug resistant" clothing. Depends on where and time of the year. |

The hunter will get more than a fair shake with this outfit. They will keep you positive throughout the entire hunt. They will choose only quality trophy animals for you to take and provide insights into all aspects of a true African hunting experience. Absolutely no problems encountered from booking to returning home. All officials in Zimbabwe and Johannesburg friendly and helpful. Local tribes people more than helpful in information regarding likely elephant locaitons and lion sightings. Felt like the whole tribal area was working for us. |

I have hunted with Lou Hallamore on three separate trips in Zimbabwe. It has been a pleasure to receive his most professional help and insights into all facets of African hunting as well as a true history lesson on the African situation. He has a positive position for the future and imparts enthusiasm throughout the entire hunt. Most plainly put, the hunt and Mr. Lou Hallamore are a no bullshit experience. The only guarantee is everyone involved in the hunt will be working for the success of the hunt 100 percent of the time. We did everything possible to find the quality animals I was hunting for. We really had no "bad luck" as we did nothing wrong, nor did anything go wrong. It is only that the critters had very good luck that we were not successful.

It was with some anxiety that I brought my family to Zimbabwe this September. Although my feelings were founded in CNN and BBC, everyone at HHK assured me "all was fine" in the hunting areas.
We had no problems what so ever. We spent a couple of days prior to our hunt in Victoria Falls doing typical tourist things and never once felt threatened or uncomfortable by the situation. After the hunt my family spent a couple days fishing on Lake Kariba out of Sijarira camp. The hunting camp was exceptional. Although the usual camp for Matetsi unit 3 was unavailable, Debbie and Gavin Rabinowitz, the camp managers, went out of their way to make sure I and my family were comfortable and enjoying themselves. My wife and three daughters, ages 7, 9 and 11 had a great time.
Ross Johnston, Clive Hallamore and Steve Brewer, the PH's for our group, made outstanding efforts to ensure we got the game we were after. I really can't say enough about Ross, who really made the trip a success for everyone.
Shirley Wilson-Flak for HHK did a fine job of coordinating our travel and lodging arrangements.
Once again, no problems even for a family with smallish children. We had a great time.

Zimbabwe is wonderful and Matetsi is a great safari area. HHK Safaris and Anthony Crick run a first rate operation and do everything in their power to make sure you as a hunter have a wonderful experience. Our safari took place during the heart of what was considered political uncertainty in Zimbabwe. We had zero problems and had an excellent safari. |

Returned Tuesday, 6/10, from a 10 day hunt in Zim. Hunted Sijarira and Chete for Cape buff/PG on Lake Kariba with HHK Safaris. We arrived in Vic Falls from Joberg on SAA and were courteously and professionally treated by both government and airport workers. Entry, immigration, customs and rifle importation were quick and totally uneventful. After a one hour charter flight, we arrived in a beautiful camp on the shores of Lake Kariba, complete with a generator and satellite TV. Couldn't have been more comfortable or better taken care of. The camp was more like a resort than a hunting camp and was fully supplied. We ate and drank well. There were no shortages or fuel supply problems in camp. As usual, we were accompanied by a friendly and competent game scout from the Forestry Department while hunting, but saw no other government officials, nor did we encounter any roadblocks. Departure was via charter flight from camp to Vic Falls. Again, airport personnel and government officials were courteous and professional with absolutely no hassles. There were no inquiries on how much cash we had or anything else. No searches, other than the usual metal detector and X Ray of carry on items prior to boarding. They don't make you take your shoes off and could care less about your deodorant, shampoo, etceteras. Tips to airline personnel for help with carrying luggage are appreciated, but not required. In short, we had a great time and were not interfered with, hassled, or bothered in any way. Based on our experience, it would seem to me that if you avoid Harare and Bulawayo, travel by air charter instead of by car and employ a reputable safari operator, you should have no problems. I have heard this from other hunters as well. YMMV. FYI, South Africa now requires that ammunition be transported in your rifle case or a separate locked container and not in your duffle bag. Zim does not permit ammunition to be transported in the rifle case, but are OK with it in your duffle bag. This is a bit odd, since we flew SAA from Joberg to Vic Falls and returned to Joberg on SAA as well. You would expect some consistency using the same airline, but such is not the case. Other than that, SAA treats you well and feeds you a decent (free) lunch on the flight from Joberg to Vic Falls and back, even though flight time is less than two hours. Sijarira and Chete have few roads and require a lot of hiking over hilly, rough terrain in order to appreciate what these concessions have to offer. Hunters who book there should be in good physical condition. The weather was hot and dry. Fishing in Lake Kariba is an option and the Tigerfish are awesome. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable safari.

SAA lost 1 bag between Jo-burg and Harare. It's a pity to see how Jan Smuts Airport is looking today. 20 years ago, it was a clean, well organised airport with white people in charge. Today, mostly Africans sitting behind the counter talking together or painting finger nails! |

I hunted 2:1 with a good friend together. We had a lot of fun and we will go back. Outstanding PH! Gomez knows the area very well and he is working very hard. We enjoyed the trip very much and had a lot of fun with him. Some poaching in the area. We found 5 elephants and remains of a buffalo that they got in a snare. We collected several fresh snares. We hunted during the elections this spring, but everything was very quiet. It looked like we were the only "armed" poeple when we arrived in Harare a few days after the election. Graham Hingeston from HHK prepared everything perfect. There was always enough fuel, food and beer/wine in camp. Hope we get our trophies soon that they delivered at Taxidermy Enterprises.

Great experience, our PH Jim was extremely knowledgable about all fauna and flora in the country which kept long tracking walks interesting. The staff was all very good, and everyone we met in Zimbabwe before, during, and after hunting was extremely friendly and helpful. The Omay area has no fences - psychologically this was extremely pleasing, I'd see trees or brush growing in what looked like a fence corner and when we got there I'd laugh to myself realizing that I hadn't yet seen a fence. |

|
This was our first trip to Africa. Traveling with my wife, we had heard all the bad news, and honestly we have been hassled more by beggars in Minneapolis and have seen more heavily armed police and security personnel in almost every other country and airport we've been in - we experienced almost none of these spectacles in Zimbabwe. We spent two days in Victoria Falls (the State Department warns you about that city) and there were no instances where we were uncomfortable. Our last morning we went to the market early and later my wife wanted to run back one last time and I didn't feel worried at all about her going alone. There are some police and uniformed security personnel but none that we saw were armed and nobody was looking or acting intimidating. Regarding food shortages the only trace of that (from our view) was that certain items were not available on some menus, and it was one item here or there, never 'no meat' or 'none of the beef'. I'm not denying that there are serious problems, but the effect that it had on us as hunters/tourists was nil. Traveling to Mexico, Europe, or Central America has always been more of a hassle in my experiences, and I've never been to those places hunting so I haven't had any firearms to check or clear. We met other tourists who echoed our thoughts. The South African ladies we met said that they felt Zim was safer than South Africa - and their media portrays the situation in Zimbabwe as extremely grim, so they had been apprehensive about going. One precaution we took was to prepay as much as possible from the States (e.g. trophy fees) and to pay for the rest in U.S. cash (exchange rates on credit cards are extremely unfavorable, and we'd heard the numbers may get stolen even months after you've used them abroad). This didn't prove to be a problem, we were able to get by on greenbacks and like I said we never felt uncomfortable, so carrying cash was fine.

SAA must buy the cushions for their seats expecting very short flights or travelers with very large and well "padded" rear ends. I would encourage any would be traveler to bring a suitable cushion or prepare for a sleepless travel and sore behind. One other hunter going somewhere else had one bag left at Jo'burg that was to arrive later that day. One plastic gun case of yet another hunter broken but serviceble. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
None, not any. Treated like a VIP from beginning to end including Jo'burg overnight, Zimbabwe officials, airport personnel, momentary police road stops and of course hunting camp. I travelled by vehicle the length of Zimbabwe from Kariba in the North to Lemco in the South with a few police stops where in all cases we were smiled at and given a friendly wave. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Having one leopard not go to the bait after listening to him grunt his arrival as he approached for over 10 minutes. Fooling a different and giant Mr. Chui on the 12th night after listening to the hyrax and guinea fowl carry on as he approached and finally went to the bait. The impala bones began to splinter as would a brittle tree in a hurricane. Three taps to my leg and a moment later the light came on and Mr. Chui appeared much larger than one of the large leopard trophies at last years SCI Convention. Of course making the perfect shot releived both Lou and myself of the fear of possibly needing med-evac services on the 13th day. "In the salt", said Lou. Finally toasting and dedicating Mr. Chui to our good friend Mr. George Neary, without whose introduction to Lou this would never have happened. Good wishes and Thank you Georgie Boy. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
HHK and Lou provided everything. Mr. Chui provided the excitement. The staff provided way too much good food and pampering. If winter, warm clothes including long johns, gloves and warm hat. Cough Silencer. If you don't have one of these devices or something similar, you will develop a cough that must be smothered down in the blind for 6 or many more hours. I didn't but can guarantee I will never leave home again without one. |

Dear Neil,
Here is a partial list of incidents involving Brent Hine at HHK:
1.Item #4 on your evaluation sheet was never a factor. I shot the first buffalo and first sable that I saw. I told Brent that I would like to take a warthog if we got a chance at an exceptional one. We were driving down the road, when he slammed on the brakes and said, "shoot that hog". It was almost dark and I couldn't see him very well. Facing us straight on, he didn't look very big to me, but I figured if Brent said it was a good one, I had better shoot. I did and shot a tusk off, but I got him. It turned out to be a small hog. Then, Brent gave me hell for being such a lousy shot that I didn't hit it between the eyes and also all the excuses I had for not getting a good hit. He really gave me a bad time about it. I got the idea that he was trying to run up the trophy fee, and that hog put me into the next bracket in dip and pack fees.
2.We were trying to get a shot at a baboon through thick brush. Brent put up the sticks and said to shoot. I couldn't see a thing but brush. He grabbed my rifle out of my hands and took it by the scope and slammed it onto the sticks. "Look through the scope!" he yelled. At what? I didn't see anything. This happened on two or three other occasions. By the way, my rifle has dents in the wood in the forestock from being slammed onto the sticks. The sticks are only wrapped with one layer of black electrical tape. My rifle was custom made and is very expensive.
3.We were hyena hunting at night with a predator call. It was a bright moonlit night. We had hyenas coming in. When hit with a spot light, they would bolt instantly. I wasn't quick enough to get a shot, and Brent started giving me a bad time about being slow and how I would never be able to get a leopard so slow as I was. Then there was a hyena coming right down the road. I could see him farily well in the moonlight, so I was told to shoot without the spotlight and I did. Brent said that I missed. I have no idea if I did or not. The next hyena was coming in from the left. Brent grabbed me by the head and turned me shouting, "over here!", while grabbing my rifle. Then there was one to the right and he yelled at me to look "over there", shoving my rifle to the right. He then told me I was moving around too much and to "sit still!" I couldn't believe that this was happening. Then another hyena came in and we hit him with the spotlight. I shot, and Brent said, "you missed again!" I thought that I hit this one, but Brent insisted that I never touched him. Unknown to me, the blacks thought that I hit him also. The next day, we found him dead, 50 yards from where I shot him. I had shot him in the right front shoulder.
4.Brent asked me about hunting whitetails in the states and I told him that we use tree stands. He said, "you don't hunt them, you just go out and shoot them. How unsporting". He has never done it and he was telling me how it doesn't amount to anything to go out and shoot a whitetail, because they are so stupid and tame. I just shook my head and didn't say anything.
5.I was asked if I wanted to shoot some game for butchery. We went out and I shot a wildebeest. It took off with the herd and the blacks were tracking it. They were off to my right and I saw Brent over there with them. I was staying abreast of them, when I saw the wildebeest down on my left. I shot it. The blacks came over to where I was and Brent came walking out also. He went crazy, yelling and screaming and waving his arms, and saying that I almost shot him. I could not have shot in a more opposite direction from him. I said "bullshit!" But he was adamant that I shot in his direction. That was so ridiculous that it left me speechless.
Over all, any time he could find something to degrade, ridicule or belittle, he was quick to do so. This trip has been my dream for 50 years. I saved my money for a long time to be able to afford to go. After the fifth day, if I could have changed the departure date on my airline ticket, I would have gone home. I was very upset to be spending $900 a day to be miserable. I would not hunt with Brent again if you were paying me $900 a day. To sum it up on a word, he was an "ass".
Everything else was fantastic. The staff, the camp and food could not be beat.
Rebuttal from PH Brent Hein
Dear Sirs
I have just today been made aware by Graham Hingeston of a report submitted by Mr Jack Hagens on connection with our hunt in early September 2006 and am sorry to learn of his disappointment.
I was totally unaware till now that Mr Hagens had a problem or that he felt I was to quote, "an ass". In response to some of Mr Hagens remarks:
* The warthog Mr Hagens shot; I recall was 13" long which is a good warthog in my opinion. Mr Hagens tried to blame me for his shooting off the tusk. As far as it being late - it took us approximately 10 minutes to get to where he had shot at it and then we still managed to track and kill the hog and get back to the vehicle before it got dark. I do not receive anything from the dip and pack fee. * The rifle might have got a dent in it and I do apologise, however, my shooting sticks are just the standard sticks used by most ph's and I have not previously encountered this problem. * The hyena hunt was extremely difficult with the electric caller blaring. Mr Hagens was having problems with his hearing aids and had removed them, so communication was very difficult. We went back the next day to make 100% sure. * The incident regarding stands was also related in trying to convey that it is different hunting here and you do need to shoot through brush from time to time and that it was okay when using a 375 * Mr Hagens had no sight of me or the three trackers when he shot at the downed wildebeest with a 375 solid which went through and came awfully close to me. I did get excited as the bullet had come close - a stark reminder of Steve Brewer's (another HHK professional hunter) incident a few weeks prior where both he and his tracker were wounded by a stray bullet.
Obviously in light of this report we had a clash of personalities. This was certainly not shown at the time by Mr Hagens generous gratuity to me.
Sincerely
BRENT HEIN

Theh PH has been James Rosenfels, who has got his own hunting company, "Western Safaris", but he was contracted by HHK for me for this safari. He's an absolute excellent PH, 29 years old. I'm proud for having hunted with him. I have learned a lot from him. I want to hunt Lion with him in his own concession at Zambezi Valley for 2008. Furthermore, the animals reported, I hunted two young male and several females and I heard them almost every night. Exciting.

Condition Comments: |
The game in Lemco is extremely plentiful. However, our hunt started with a waxing moon hitting full moon mid-way through the 14 day hunt. This had an obvious negative effect on game movements as they became more nocturnal than would be preferred. Between myself and my hunting partner, Jimmy Banks, who hunted with Clive Hallamore, we had a combined total of 19 baits with approximately 21 female leopard feeding. The big males are there, but weren't coming to bait--likely due to the moon conditions making natural prey easier to kill. We saw a number of very good sable, but were looking for something 43+. The only one of that size seen was a 44 inch bull with its right horn broken. Near the end of the hunt, I decided to shoot a beautiful old bull of nearly 40" with 10.5" bases. Waterbuck on the Ripple Creek section of Lemco are truly exceptional. We hunted them hard and saw 3 different bulls of 31+", including the 32" bull I shot. Lemco is the best place I know of to hunt giraffe. They are everywhere. Without question Lemco is an exceptional area. |

There were absolutely no problems with the hunt that could have been prevented by man. Only the full moon inhibited our hunting success for leopard. |

In the future, I will book my hunts directly with a PH. I will not waste my money with outfitters in the US and/or Zimbabwe.
Rebuttal from HHK Safaris and Jack Atcheson and Sons
After reading through the report by Stro Morrison that was sent to you concerning his safari with Graham Hingeston of HHK Safaris, I have talked with Graham to get his observation. Graham states:
I was sent a copy by the hunting report as well. Reading through it, Stro was happy with everything other than he felt the area was over hunted. He got everything he wanted except an eland.
I (Keith Atcheson) observed the same from his report and never heard a word of complaint from him. The hunter with Stro in camp shot a huge eland. Hunting is hunting and there are never any guarantees. How can we help hunters that do not inform us of their feelings? Very few hunters take every animal on their wish list. We can easily assist him in returning to an area with a lot of eland.

This was my first hunt in Africa, so I really don't have anything I've done in the past to compare it to. The people I've talked with who have hunted Africa numerous times all told me that I had an exceptional trip. I don't disagree with them one bit. In total, I took 18 trophy animals. My PH, George Hallamore, did an outstanding job of both finding me the animals I wanted as well as running the camp. I can't say enough good things about him. He really went above and beyond for me. I've rebooked with him for 2008. Ann Horsman of Aspenhill Adventures did a great job preparing me for my hunt and Kathi Klimes of Wild Travel got me the best seats on the plane. I recommend both highly.

Used miles for business class on Lufthansa from Denver non-stop to Frankfurt and then to Joberg. Despite the layover it was a good way to go and avoid the 18+hr SAA mess which I did two years ago and said never again. Important to get baggage checked all the way to Zimbabwe. All the airlines had interline agreements so it just requires that you tell your airline at checkin - they may need reminding. My bag and rifle made it all the way on four different flights to Vic Falls. Made it back just fine too. I did check in Frankfurt before takeoff that my bag and rifle were on board. Lufthansa did not charge me for carrying a rifle but it is important to notify them what rifle you are carrying! |

I was glad I followed other's advice on taking Powerbars along for mid-morning snacks. I took a cheap green small daypack for my own water, sunscreen, aspirin, powerbars. One of the trackers carried it and the additional "Fuel" was welcome come 10 am after a 5am breakfast! |

I had originally booked a hunt for 2005 but had to re-schedule due to a medical emergency. HHK was very easy to work with to re-book for 2006. I had met Graham and Ross in Reno in 2005 and I highly recommend that hunters meet their outfitters before booking whenever possible. HHK runs an excellent operation with highly experienced personnel and the highest standards. In a volatile industry this is very important. This was my second hunt in Africa, a previous hunt was in Namibia was for plains game, and my primary goal was to have a good Cape Buffalo hunting experience and to do so in an area of Africa that is still wild and remote which is why I chose Chirisa for my safari. This is a beautiful area with a tremendous variety of trees and also terrain. One can hunt the riverine areas and also the plateaus with various degrees of thick vegetation. After the most rain in 10 years, stuff was thick in spots but the leaves were falling and colors changing. Beautiful vistas. This concession has a good road network to get around. Lots of elephant but saw nothing very big in the way of tusks. Saw lions close on several occasions. The camp mangagers, Chris and Val Van Wyk were neat people whose cattle ranch had been confiscated. They are doing a great job updating and improving the camps in Chirisa. My only reservation is that the owner of a safari concession may take in other PH's and their clients to help fulfill the quota that they have prepaid. I would stipulate in the future that they not be in the same camp as I am. I cannot say enough good things about my PH - Ross Johnston. Ross is about 39 and in excellent condition and worked hard every day. He is not only a great hunter to be with but also a great teacher which was one of my criteria in selecting a PH. Early the second morning we saw buff, lion, and elephant in less than 1/2 hour. We had some good stalks, several of which were a couple hours long. His trackers, James(Tonga) and Luka(Shangaan), were fun to watch track. On the third day, we hunted hard all day and were pretty tired when we spotted a herd of elephant in a vlei around 4PM. Suddenly, one of the trackers saw some buff further down the valley. We took off and after a cat and mouse game we got to look over the herd of about 60 buff that was drifting thru the trees towards some springs. At times there were buff just 10-15 yards away on the other side of bushes. After about 80 minutes we got to the end of the group. Suddenly the sticks went up and my .375 HH followed. The bull was about 80 yards away and broadside. The first shot did alot of damage and he nosed down after running about 20 yards. He got up and turned back towards the bush. Another shot and two insurance shots later he was dead. I was very happy with the size and boss. Nice configuration. Above average with a score of 108. His spread was 39" with good 13" boss. Turned out it was the largest buff to date in Chirisa. I was surprised at some of the small buff taken by earlier clients. We saw nothing larger but I am sure they are there. The next two days we hunted for a decent impala which I had never hunted. Near sunset on the 5th day, I took a nice ram, 22 1/2", which is good for that area. A long shot of about 180 yards with my .375 took him. I then hunted birds and did some sightseeing and game watching the last two days. Wonderful week. I had flown into camp from Vic Falls where I spend two nites prior to my hunt touring and fishing on the Zambezi. Rode out with Ross to Bulawayo(three hours of rough roads and four hours on tar) and spent a nite in the Matobo Hills - a world heritage site. Stayed at Camp Amalinda which is one of the most unusual and wonderful places I have ever stayed. Visiting San artwork in the caves and Cecil Rhode's gravesite was even more enjoyable than my time in Vic Falls. On my afternoon tour with my guide named Zulu, we only saw 3 or 4 other cars in the entire Park. The last morning I spent shopping in Bulawayo which is a much better place to shop than Vic Falls and prices are lower! Visit the handicap made products in the shops of Jairos Jiri in either Vic Falls or Bulawayo. My last comments are on Zimbabwe. So much has been written about the problems in Zim that many hunters refuse to go or are very apprehensive. I must admit that I was concerned but had talked to hunters and non-hunters who had visited Zim the prior year. I was pleasantly surprised at the friendly, helpful, and courteous people. The airport officials were all very helpful. Driving thru quite a bit of Zim, I never felt unsafe and saw no problems. Yes, there are shortages of fuel and some staples. But people manage and survive. Electricity outages are common in the cities and generally the country is "wheels up" except for the hunting industry. Such a shame that more people are not visiting Zim with so much to see and do. Just follow your guides' advice. The official exchange rate was 100,000 Zim to the dollar but some places it was 150k or 250k or even 300k. Do not deal in black market currency exchange, that is for sure. Yes, Zim warrants close watching but I hope our State Dept does not come down any harder on Zim. The people and the game certainly need our support. Yes, do keep up with the latest developments and take out trip cancellation insurance that INCLUDES political problems. One carrier that does is Safari Club International's insurance which I used along with MedjetAssist. As in so many places, much of what is said in the press about Zim is far from the truth. I would not hesitate going back tomorrow.

I hunted during the dry season and Zimbabwe has been experiencing a drought this year. Game was abundant and in good condition at Fimbiri as the forage was still in good shape. Ngali was a little different, though game was still abundant, but the kudu, warthogs and bushpigs were beginning to suffer. Both areas had trememdous amount of game and the Consevancy is managed very well. |

of Hunt: |
The greatest thrill to me was experiencing my first African hunt. Just witnessing the incredible job of the PH Steve Brewer and Tracker Dix, was a grand experience. Animals taken were fantastic and most of the hunt was on the ground, boot leather, still-hunting and tracking. A fantastic hunt. |

If going after smaller game, take a shotgun or some solids. Why I didn't think to take solids, I don't know. Next trip will be with a 375 H&H and a shotgun. |

PH Alan Moody is a great professional hunter and pleasure to hunt with. Game was plentiful and seemed to be in good condition. We were impressed by the number of mature animals of different species that were present and observed daily. Lots of everything. Good bird shooting. Trackers and game scout did a great job. The skinners were kept busy mainly by my hunting partner Bob Zaiglin. The skinning shed was orderly and well run. Trophy care appeared to be a priority and the skinning and trophy preparations seemed efficient and proper. Camp and food was excellent. It would be hard to find a better operation than HHK. Camp managers Val and Chris were excellent hosts. There were two of us hunting and we took our wives. Both wives went out hunting with us each day and had a great time. We will probably not be allowed to return without the wives in the future. They are hooked. It is hard to say this was my best safari but also hard to say it was not. Go to Africa soon and often if you can. There were no problems for us in Zimbabwe. We spent a day and a half in Victoria Falls shopping and site seeing after the safari by ourselves. Everyone was friendly. The Victoria Falls Hotel is recommended. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
This was a partnership arrangement with Zimbabwe Parks Department and Parks was in charge of the camp/food/housing. Had HHK been in control of these functions, the overall trip would have been much better. The Zimbabwe Parks employees were not prepared to run a hunting camp competently and professionally although HHK staff compensated enough to get by. A hunt of this cost should not involve "getting by", however. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Very plentiful game (except mature lion). Many elephant seen almost daily for 16 days. Excellent knowledge and professionalism from the PH, Derek Adams. Great place for a double rifle and close, open-sight style of hunting, which I prefer. Cannot comment positively enough about Derek Adams as a PH for dangerous game. One could not do better in Zimbabwe. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
|
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
Yes |
| Why? |
A conditional "yes" only so long as HHK was in charge of all aspects of the camp. I would not recommend that someone hunt in this camp if Zimbabwe Parks is in charge. They are not yet prepared or competent to run this operation, although it is remotely possible that they could be at some point in the distant future, although I strongly doubt it. |

HHK always did what it represented, largely in the person of Graham Hingeston. Very professional. Derek Adams is a top notch PH with exceptional knowledge and experience on all dangerous game. He has over 25 years of experience and professionally pursues the game. Lion hunting is lion hunting and Derek did an exceptional job despite lack of opportunities with lion on this hunt. That is just hunting.

HHK is a top notch outfitter who really knows how to take care of a customer. I had eight people in camp catering to my every concern. It was the first hunt of the year for them in this concession and I had the whole concession to myself. Wayne was fantastic and knew his stuff well.
