His wife Kelly deserves much credit also- we intended to meet her but Greg's mother was in JoBurg hospital in ICU and Greg left after seeing us to Kasane a couple of days after the hunt. he could have very easily had me shoot a bull on the 1st day & been on his way. Jeff Neal also gets an atta boy for finding this hunt, along with Greg Brownlee in his office who hunted Botswana in April & provided valuable insight. day 1: 4 stalks/ saw 20+ bulls day 2: 2 stalks/ saw 17+ bulls day 3: 1 stalk/ tracking 3 bulls, had another 3 come in on our left and then peel off & go their own way, then had another 7 bulls come in from the right. this is where Greg showed his skills-keeping on the original 3 bulls, evaluating the other bulls, not getting busted by either group & finally getting us in position to take the bull we had agreed on & not get in the middle of a stampede once i took the shot. everything from the shot for the next 15 seconds was in slow motion, seeming like a minute- really bizzare feeling. i guess that is what happens when you pull both triggers at the same time on a .470 NE double. 2 holes 4 inches apart from 50 yards thru the shoulder. Jeff assured me i wasn't the originator of this move! final note- the bulls on the last day were all feeding in the burned area from a few days before.

Greg Butler is a gentleman and true professional elephant hunter from the old school who believes the experience is essential to a successful hunt. Therefore, it is likely each day you will get very close to elephants and when you decide to take one, closer than that (i.e. 10-20 yards). Greg truly enjoys hunting and of course, you will have an excellent opportunity to take a great bull. He pays great attention to details, has great trackers and camp staff and is first rate in every manner. There are no surprises in terms of costs, camps, etc., except that everything might well exceed your expectations. |

I have hunted since I was 5 years old in Montana and my wife and I (she is also a hunter) have made a half dozen 16-21 day safaris to hunt four African countries, where I have taken most of the big five and numerous plains game. I have also hunted in South America, Europe, Canada (Baffin Island), Greenland and several US states, including numerous trips to Alaska. |

By any standard, Greg and Kelly Butler operate a first class safari operation. Greg is a true hunter, with elephants being his passion and it shows. With many years of experience he knows what he is doing, how to get close and when to back out. After taking our shoes off, so we could get in close, I took my bull with a brain shot at 17 yards with a 470 N.E. One couldn't ask for a better PH. The logistics and their recommendations regarding travel was perfect in every respect. My wife and I also used Air2000, who provided outstanding service to transit Jo-burg and due to all paper-work being in order, clearing Botswana customs was a breeze...10-15 minutes. The hunting concession which is nearly surrounded on three sides by the Chobe National Park was outstanding with a good deal of variety in terrain (forest areas & river valley) and plenty of elephants. We probably saw some 250 bulls in 14 days and turned down five that were over 60 pounds within the first week. In addition to hundreds of elephant cows and calves, we also saw no less than 16 other species of game. Also to the credit of the government and region, we never saw anyone, other than our hunting party, and no evidence of poaching in the hunting area. The land cruiser and all other equipment was new, and the Hemmingway-style tented camp falls into the luxury category. They featured comfortable full sized beds, an ensuite shower and toilet with continuous hot water, night stands/dressers, a closet and carpeted floor. The camp food was good with no shortages of anything. Furthermore, the staff was polite, efficient and well trained. It was a cheerful camp where as the hunter you felt welcomed by everyone. And Greg's trackers (generally River Bushman)were outstanding. In addition to many photo opportunities, there was a pride of lions that roared each night very close to, if not in, the camp. It was Africa at its best. The winter weather at this time of year was cool in the morning, but very pleasant during the day. Without any reservations whatsoever, I would recommend Greg and Kelly Butler. And given his many repeat clients, I am sure many other elephant hunters concur.

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
I read with interest The Hunting Report's monthly issues for October and November, both having articles on concession CH8 in Botswana. I decided to write to you about my elephant hunting experience in CH8 from July 1-14, 2010.
My hunt was booked by Jeff Neal, booking agent with Greg Butler and Peter Holbrow Safaris in Maun, Botswana. My PH for the 14-day safari was Peter Holbrow whose humor, knowledge, experience and passion made him, in my opinion, second to no other PH I have hunted with. And I have hunted in four African countries.
Another PH, Gareth Flemix, was in camp and I spent some days with Gareth and Peter tracking elephants. This gave me some time to believe my appraisal of Gareth was such that I would feel very comfortable hunting with him. My good friend Rodney Cook videotaped the entire hunt which ended up with over seven hours of video that is in the process of being edited.
The bull elephant we killed on the 12th day was an outstanding trophy with tusks that were roughly 17 inches circumference at the lip and weighed 55 plus pounds n one side and 50 plus pounds on the other. I am still awaiting word on the exact weight as we did not reomve them from the skull when I left camp.
When reviewing the video, we comment that this bull was the "101st bull" we tracked up. This count did not include cows and calves, nor did it included any bulls we saw from the vehicle. All 101 bulls tracked up can be seen and counted on the video. Some of the bulls we tracked up were heavy, one-tuskers, some had broken tusks, and some had tusks that were just too small.
The video shows just how close we had to get to evaluate the ivory and, in some cases, it was a matter of feet as the bush was very thick.
We killed my trophy at 25 yards with one heart/lung shot from .416 Remingotn magnum. The bull ran another 50 yards and collapsed. All of the final stalk and shooting of the bull is on a tremendous video. It shows how Peter was very calm and under control as he orchestrated the final minutes, even though the wind was constantly swirling.
This hunt was an adventure of a lifetime and I would recommend this safari company to anyone.

Email from Kelly at Greg Butler Safaris to John Tyburczy:
Dear John and Elizabeth,
All a pleasure and thank you so much for the observations in camp will certainly take note.
Your notes regarding leopard hunting unfortunately have to fall on deaf ears as all those items mentioned are the rules and regulations of leopard hunting in Botswana. It is against the law to have more than two baits hanging at any one time. No pre-scouting or pre-baiting allowed. Your bait permit attached to your actual leopard license is time and area specific, you also had in your possession (with Wilton and the leopard license) what is called a "cha" permit, which is the third permit required, and a permit allowing you, scouts and PH's to get in your vehicle and look for spoor/leopard. This permit is valid for the days of your exact safari only. We carry out game counts and estimates, we use an international monitoring system called "MOMS" but to complete this date, we have to record what we see whilst on safari, otherwise get special permission from govt to carry out game counts.
Each country has its own ideas and rules and regulations of "fair chase", ours is the very strictest I know of in Africa, we are actually very proud of our ethics. The most lenient country in this respect is probably South Africa, especially on the private game ranches of which there are 100's, lion hunting in a fenced area of some several hectares is even allowed there. Even lions that are bred specifically for hunting are photographed and sold, prior to the hunter's arrival. The PH's accustomed to game ranch hunts in South Africa would have a very hard time here, with our extremely strict hunting code of conduct regulations.
I believe from Wilton, leopard fed on your bait, and quite a number of fresh spoor were found during the course of the days hunting, this means there are leopard resident in the area, they have taken your bait and fair chase begins. The two most difficult aspects of a free range truly wild leopard hunt are 1) to be located in an area of good leopard position population and 2) be sufficiently talented to get a leopard to take your bait. Once those two aspects are achieved the rest is chance and good luck.
Hounds can be used to track leopard from bait, and we have done this most successfully but obviously those hunts have to be specifically booked as a hound assisted hunt, they are few available in Botswana and very expensive.
The caves are beautiful, and a national heritage site, thank you for the DVD and note I have given it to the museum. And, all those medical supplies have gone to the village, much appreciated.
I hope you enjoyed your mobile safari? And saw lots of game!
Email from John Tyburczy to Kelly at Greg Butler Safaris:
Dear Kelly,
Thanks for all your help with our hunt. We did have a good time.
We were disappointed not to get a chance at a leopard but know how this can happen. We do have some suggestions that might help in the future.
Without the ability to pre bait pre-hunt scouting becomes more important. The lack of scouting and Wilton's unfamiliarity with the area meant that several days were used looking for spoor and preparing baits. We did not have baits up until the third day, and then only two.
I understand that it is a long drive from Maun to the camp to do pre-scouting, but it is an even longer trip for the clients. With bait sites identified one might expect to have baits up and working by the second, or possibly even the first night. This could make all the difference.
Including the impala and warthog in the offer was nice, however as we did not see even one of either animal they were not usable for meat or bait.
The camp overall was quite nice. There were a few minor things we forgot to mention at our departure. The zipper of our tent was broken and the switch to the better lighting did not work properly. The hot water bottles were very nice, except for the leaky one that seemed to get moved to a different person's bed each night.
We particularly enjoyed visiting the cave and wished we had time to explore it more thoroughly.
Outfitter Rebuttal:
I will answer as best as I can, in addition to the information you already have, from my email to John a couple of months after his Leopard hunt in 2008.
John purchased a Kalahari Desert leopard hunt donation. John and Elizabeth visited me at our booth shortly after their purchase. I explained to them the territory in which they had purchased their hunt is the Xai Xai community based concession of 1.5 million hectare of unfenced Kalahari Desert terrain. Greg and I have had the lease in this concession for eight years, each year we are allocated 2 leopards on quota. Each year both leopards are successfully taken. John's is the only leopard not taken, to this date.
Leopard hunting in Botswana is not impossible, only operated under strict rules and regulations, as explained previously. I am not permitted to pre scout or pre bait. Being in a position to hang baits after two days looking for fresh spoor has been sighted, as in John's hunt, is fairly good going.
The PH report records tracks and signs of 2 big toms found, one of these male leopards fed on our bait, but only at night. Shooting of leopard over bait is permitted in daylight only. Waiting for the leopard to come to bait either early in the evening or early in the morning.
Our PH, Wilton Raats is familiar with the concession, finding good leopard movement and hanging baits on the 3rd day of the safari in a concession of 1.5 million hectares is testament to this.
John did not have an impala license; this species does not occur in that region, he had leopard, steenbuck, gemsbok, and warthog. The PH report records good numbers of gemsbok and good leopard feeding and numerous fresh spoor.
Our company is privately owned by Greg and I. We are relatively small operators, one or both of us either meets or guides every client. We are always open to discussion and happy to assist wherever we can. We love our clients, our reputation demands this. Being small and in a position to meet and greet and or guide every client, I usually have a good feel for every safari. Of course I appreciate John's disappointment of not shooting his leopard. We were disappointed too. If a client chats to me about anything he or she is disgruntled about I can almost always offer an alternative or make a suggestion.
As far as my file on this safari shows, John and Elizabeth left good tips for the camp, and the PH, Wilton Raats. I have it noted here high interest requests prior to their arrival were access to the local village where they could distribute donations, exploring caves and for me to assist them with an excursion after the safari, all of which was achieved.
I believe I thanked John for his hunting suggestions, but showed why and how these methods could not be implemented. And I did not hear further. I believe they had opportunity at a good male leopard. We all carried out the special requests, visits to caves and excursions after their safari with pleasure, it is now more than 17 months after their departure, and well into our 2010 booking season. I am not sure what it is further I can do for them at this point? Every year the Botswana government reduces the annual leopard quota, in fact every year there are changes to hunting policy in Botswana. As operators we simply work within these boundaries and offer each and every client the very best experience we can.
Greg will be at our usual booth at SCI in Reno this year, I shall write to them and suggest they visit with him, I am certain he'd be more than happy to meet them and discuss face to face any issues they may have.
Again, I appreciate your email and the opportunity to explain the safari donated to SCI in 2008. You may recall the hunt report of Jerry Dollar who purchased the same safari in 2005.
Rerebuttal from John Tyburczy:
How much of the difficulties I experienced were intrinsic or extrinsic I cannot say, but I believe that my experience may be of value to other subscribers, therefore I would suggest putting it in your Botswana file for those that are interested. I am certain that others have had good experiences. I can only report on my hunt. To address the points in Kelly's letter in order; I cannot speak to their previous success, only to my experience. Prebaiting or scouting may not be allowed, but we spent time visiting local residents attempting to find out if they had seen leopard tracks. This could have been done in advance. PH Wilton seemed capable enough, but did not seem familiar with the area, such as needing directions to the camp on our way in and relying on the local guide for directions around the area. I wouldn't consider getting bait up on the third day a "testament" to his familiarity with the area. The original invoice (attached) lists impala, steenbok, and warthog. No impala or warthog were ever seen in the area.
The gemsbok that I shot for bait was not included and I had to pay additional for that. We try to enjoy our safaris, whatever the circumstances, and prefer not to complain about things that are not correctable at the time. We always try to leave good tips because we never know how the staff are paid. We have been in circumstances where most of the staff's living wage was from tips and so are reluctant to "short" them, particularly if they have appeared to give a reasonable effort. I would disagree that we had an opportunity at a good male leopard. We never saw a leopard of any kind so never had what could be considered a shooting opportunity. We did not see the local village, the medical supplies we brought to camp were taken back to Maun and left with them to be distributed. We did take a day off from hunting, after the baits were up, to visit the Drotskys Caves, which we enjoyed. And Kelly did put us in contact with a travel agent through whom we arranged for additional traveling in Botswana. I am not, and have not, asked them to do anything for us at any point.

Comments: |
USAir agent in PHL seemed unfamiliar with firearms processing procedures but was not a problem. Connected in Munich and had to complete German paperwork per advice from SAA. Tedious but no show stoppers. SAA flight from Munich to JNB was nice, service generally good but seats were small. Return flights from Vic Falls and JNB were delayed and lower quality of service than arrival flights. Flying into JNB from Munich was easy in terms of RSA firearms process, no other hunters on flight. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
Absolutely none, first rate all the way. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Seeing herds of 2-3000 buffalo, stalking crocodile in the Okavango Delta |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Used a Ruger 416 Rigby with 400 grain Swift A Frames for all trophies. Swarovski 10x42 EL binoculars excelled in seeing game. Always packed too much equipment and clothing, next time cut by 50%. Recommend long sleeve shirts to prevent sun problems. Tuffpak rifle case worked perfectly. Canon 30D SLR and Canon SD870 IS Sure Shot cameras were perfectly paired for quality and portability. Recommend web or mesh hiking or running shoes when hunting in the delta as you will get wet. Avoid leather. Drink plenty of water even when in the delta, it's still a desert. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
Yes |
| Why? |
Yes, absolutely and without reservation. Hunting in the Delta is one of the last few truly isolated and wild places in Africa. Butler Safaris is one of the premier safari companies in Botswana and the camps, vehicle, food and staff were impeccable. Gareth Flemix is one of the new generations of PH and was spectacular. Strong, fit, extremely knowledgeable on all aspects of safari including game, geography, hunting techniques and managing staff and a great conversationalist. He had an excellent game eye and extremely high ethical standards for both hunting techniques and trophy sizes. He worked tirelessly to ensure a good hunt for us (non-hunting wife accompanied me and she felt completely at home). He has approximately 15 years experience and is licensed in Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Mozambique to hunt all plains and dangerous game. |

This safari was an outstanding hunt and far surpassed my expectations. Buffalo in the Okavango Delta generally run closer to 38-40 inches in spread and to take a huge bossed old bull with a 44 inch spread was truly memorable. Butler Safaris handled everything extremely well and as mentioned above I can only offer nothing but the highest praise for the PH Gareth Flemix. I'm very happy to offer more details upon request.

I cannot say enough good things about this entire hunt. Having seen Botswana from the ground - 3-4 hours each way, it would definitely use their charter air service in the future.
Greg and wife Kelly Butler a delight to do business with - very professional and organized.
My PH - Darren Smit, 25 years old and extremely knowledgeable about game and all the flora. The kind of young man you would like to see your daughters bring home.
The action once the leopard is treed is so fast. Maybe 20-30 seconds. I recommend a good video cameraman so you can see and hear what happened.
The last four days were spent at the Lechwe Camp (another leased camp) by the Okavango Delta videoing buffalo, elephants, zebra, giraffes, lions and hippos.
This hunt or any with Greg Butler can be booked directly - no need for any others involved, but would recommend Alex Lipworth if so desired.
At Johannesburg, I recommend the Holiday Inn at the airport - Kempton. Or the Afton Guest House - VIP meet and assist.
If you want a good leopard and can't take all those hours in a blind, this is the way to do. Until the dogs (hounds) are put on a fresh track - you can cruise the sand roods looking for tracks. These trackers are good.

I have been on guided hunts all over the US and Canada as well as 6 previous safaris in Africa and this hunt topped them all. Greg Butler and his wife Kelly are absolute masters at running a top notch hunting operation and everyone in their company went out of their way to see that I enjoyed myself. My PH Darren Smit was not only a great person to spend time with around a campfire but in the field he was a real pro. It was quickly obvious that he knew how to hunt leopards with hounds and the excitement of a hound hunt just can't be beat. After 2 previous leopard hunts where I sat all night in a blind without success, it is impossible to describe the excitement of having a leopard come out of the thorn brush headed for me and fighting the dogs simultaneously. I dropped him with a shotgun at less than 10 yards. As a bonus I took a 45 Gemsbok bull that should place in the top 5 of the SCI record book. It just doesn't get any better than this (at least not with your clothes on!!). As a bonus, since my hunt was successful so quickly, I was transferred from the Kalahari to the Okavango Delta where I spent 5 days just loafing and taking pictures at no additional charge other than transfer fees.
