ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
This hunt was very memorable in many ways. I had planned the hunt because I love to hunt buffalo, and  I craved the "different" experience of hunting in Australia. It was important to me because I needed to take at least four of the animals available there - water buffalo, banteng, scrub bull, and either sambar, rusa or axis deer, in order to attain the diamond level Inner circles of Wild Oxen of the World and Animals of the South Pacific. I had been cautioned by my Outfitter, Matthew Graham of Hunt Australia, that it would not necessarily be easy to do. However, he promised to do whatever he could to make it happen and Boy! Did he deliver!

I was unaware as my son Jon and I left the US, that within just the past few days Matt had lost his banteng area due to a difference with his aborigine landlords. As a result, he had made arrangements for us to hunt with another outfitter, Carl Goodhand of Goodhand's Outdoor Adventures, who had a very good banteng area elsewhere. We knew nothing of this when we arrived in the airport at Darwin, and there was no one to meet us. We waited for a couple of hours, making frantic phone calls to Matt and his wife, and to all the phone numbers we had been given ... but no answers. Finally a young man showed up looking for two "American hunters". He did not know our names, and he had never heard of Matt Graham or Hunt Australia, but he was there to take us to "Carl's" hunt camp, to hunt banteng. With some misgivings, we climbed aboard for what turned out to be a long, long drive. When we arrived in camp, we were dismayed to find ourselves assigned to small tents in a camp which featured one main utility building and no running water. The facilities were not so bad, but they suffered in our estimation by comparison to the glowing description of Hunt Australia's "Resort" which was the camp in which we had been originally scheduled to hunt. We did not ever know the whole story about the reason for the switch until near the end of our trip.

All's well that ends well. Jon shot his banteng the second morning, and the second afternoon after some previous clients left camp we were allowed into the premier banteng area which they had been hunting. Banteng everywhere! Big ones! After a fairly short stalk I shot mine at about 100 yards. My guide at that point was Carl, and he ran ahead, rather excitedly, I thought as I followed along more carefully. As I approached, he was waving his arms and shouting "Top Five" -I had no clue what he meant until he looked me in the eye and said:" I THINK YOU HAVE JUST SHOT A TOP FIVE ANIMAL." Then he ignored me and proceeded to measure the horns with his fingers, over and over again. I just stood there, and he came over to me, shook my hand, and said that he thought that I had actually just shot the new world number one. The thought that I would shoot a top ten or better animal was so unlikely to me, that I didnt know how to respond other than to thank him. It has still not been officially measured, as the drying out period has just passed, and I am hoping for the best. Carl measured it with his tape back at camp at 82"+. Whatever happens, just having the experience of being able to entertain the possibility of a world record is very special.

We were met at Gan Gan by my close friend from South Carolina, Norman Pulliam, who had flown down to hunt buffalo with us. My guide was Mark Sargent, who was in charge of the camp and who would have been my guide for banteng had we been able to hunt Matt Graham's normal area. It was only then that I learned exactly what had happened and why we had hunted in several different areas - it had all been set up at the last minute by Matt Graham in order to give us the best possible hunting opportunities and the best chance at success. I am grateful to Matt for that he went above and beyond.

Well, we all got our buffalo at Gan Gan. All three of us took 109" to 110" animals. Not everything was perfect, we encountered the unexpected, we went with the flow. We got our animals and had a fine time and met some fine people.  And that's the most important thing.

Karl Goodhand worked very hard to make sure all went smoothly on this hunt. He was actually sick and feeling bad for most of the trip, but didn't let it affect our hunting. We passed up several mature banteng waiting for good one. We were lucky and found an excellent water buffalo our first morning in his buffalo area. Camps are permanent cabins, simple but comfortable. Food was good. Having along Karl's aboriginal guide on the buffalo hunt was interesting. He had hunted that land his entire life. Karl's vehicles and equipment are first class. Karl also does a good job on trophy care. Great overall experience and hope to go back someday.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
June 22nd, 2011

I have not seen too much recently about Australia in The Hunting Report, so I though that I'd give you an update on the recent trip, taken by me and my wife, Arlene.

During the course of over three weeks we hunted with three different outfitters, starting in Queensland and ending in the Northern Territory. After hunting in Queensland and Arnhem Land, we then transferred to a location just southeast of Coburg Peninsula, which has been the traditional (and only) location for hunting banteng, a highly sought-after bovine. It should be noted that many of the outfitters who have traditionally operated on the Peninsula (inside the national park), were shut out this year (at least for the early part of the season) because of permitting issues with the Aborigines. We were fortunate enough to have made contact with Karl Goodhand, of Goodhand Outback Experience, during the winter hunting conventions. To some extent, Karl has operated "under the radar" over the last few years, as few, if any, hunting reports can be found on his operation. Karl hunts outside the national park and has a different permitting relationship with the Aborigines.

While hunting with Karl, Arlene and I each took a record book banteng, needing only two days to accomplish that feat. It should be noted that the country in which we hunted has very thick brush, and the tropical climate was very hot and humid. I would highly recommend this operation for those who want to take banteng (as well as water buffalo, which Karl hunts from a different camp).

By taking my banteng, I achieved Diamond Level status in SCI's Animals of the South Pacific Inner Circle, while Arlene walked away with Gold status, lacking only one trophy to get the Diamond Level.

Finally, I can report that Australia is not a firearms-friendly country. It is difficult for residents to own firearms, and equally difficult for non-resident hunters to bring their own firearms. To their credit, both Kingham Safaris and Australian Big Game Safaris have permit packages that are made available to all their clients well in advance of their departure from the US. That said, it took me many hours to complete the forms, get additional passport photos taken, and get "good guy" letters from my local Sheriff's Department. Equally onerous was the visit to Autralia Customs at the Sydney Airport, where we needed to complete export and restricted goods permits before boarding our outbound flight to Los Angeles. I would caution any hunters traveling with their own firearms to get to the airport, as we did, a least four hours before their flight departure. For those hunting only the larger game (water buffalo and feral ox), the outfitters with whom we hunted had loaner .375s.
