|
Glenroy truly understands the hunter and provides excellent service and quality hunting. Steve Rigby is an outstanding guide and knows where to find the animals and how to get close to get your shot. He can climb the mountains in NZ like the tahr and chamois. Ava was a great cook and attended to our every need. Slovko also looked after us since his hunters had finished early. While Jim was only around a day before he left for his own hunt out of the country, we got a very good feel for the quality of person he is and the type of hunting he offers. This is a first class operation and will get every hunter the game they are after.

There were vast amounts of game including huge numbers of red stag. I personally felt that the red stag would have been the most difficult item to kill, yet the Arrapawa sheep and the goat proved the most difficult animals to kill. They were very high in very remote places. |

|
I recently returned from an outstanding hunt in New Zealand at Glenroy Lodge. This is a beautiful place. The lodge is incredibly nice and serves outstanding meals. More importantly, there are a large number of animals on this ranch, and the hunting was not at all what I expected.
I had thought that the red stag here would be the most difficult animal to take, but it proved to be probably the easiest. There are massive numbers of stags, many of which are very high quality. Generally speaking, the tahr and the chamois require some fairly serious climbing. I was lucky to have shot my tahr at a very low altitude and close. The chamois was a different story. I climbed for a very long time and laid in the snow for a while, waiting for the appropriate moment to get a shot.
With respect to some of the animals, you can make them as difficult or as easy to hunt as you want. I chose the difficult route. The goats and the rams were very high up in remote areas that required extensive climbs to get to them. I should note that it is possible to hunt some of these animals in wilderness areas using a helicopter to get up to their elevations, but I chose not to do that.
Jim Hunter is the owner of Glenroy Lodge, and he is a true gentleman. He is a highly intelligent and competent professional hunter with impressive business ethics. I had purchased a package hunt that included a stag worth up to $4,000. If I shot one bigger, I had to pay the difference. We were out hunting and spotted a stag. Jim told me that this one would be an extra $1,500, and I chose to shoot the stag. After measuring it, however, he realized that he had made a large mistake. This stag would have been an additional $7,500. However, I only paid the extra $1,500. He did this completely on his own. I did not bring the issue up whatsoever.
Jim is very entertaining, as he knows a lot of things about a lot of places in the world. He is probably one of the most well-read people I have ever met, and I enjoyed his company during the course of my hunt.
For those considering a hunt in New Zealand, I highly recommend that they stay in Queenstown for a week or so after their hunt is over. There is so much to do in Queenstown. Depending upon the time of the year, there is snow skiing, snow boarding, snowmobiling, parasailing, bungee jumping, hang gliding, jet boating, fishing, casinos and more. There is a lot to do here and the beauty of the area is hard to describe. Needless to say, I would recommend this trip without any hesitation.
With respect to my travel here, certain airlines get bad press from time to time over the way they handle guns. For this particular trip, I used my Delta frequent flier miles to get from my home in Orlando, Florida, to New Zealand. To do this I took a combination of flights on Delta Airlines and Korean Air. Once I got to New Zealand, I used Air New Zealand.
When we arrived in New York, I was told my guns had been lost. Given the time of the flights, it seemed virtually impossible for my guns get to me by the time I left on Korean Air. I explained this to the Delta personnel the next day at JFK. They went out of their way and bent over backwards to find out where my guns were, and they in fact got my guns there before I left for Korea. This told me that the guns were there the whole time.
Delta was very accommodating. Furthermore, a gentleman from Korean Air assisted them. He absolutely bent over backwards to help me. In fact, I would say that Korean Air is one of the better airlines that I have ever flown. They do everything humanly possible to help you. From time to time, Delta does get criticized for the handling of guns, however, they could not have been any more helpful to me.
This was my 22nd international hunt. So, I have seen a lot of different things in a lot of different places. However, I was surprised in New York when the police at JFK wanted to inspect my guns before allowing them onto the plane. This was a bit unnerving, since there were a number of police officers. I was told in very terse terms to unlock the case, get away from it and not to open it. I was shocked, as I had clearly declared these guns. They inspected the guns, which basically consisted of making sure they were unloaded and there was no ammunition in the case. Finally, I was on my way with no more problems. Nevertheless, I was shocked at the way they handled the situation.
Once I arrived in New Zealand, I missed my connecting flight to Queenstown. This was largely because I was not informed about the procedures involved in bringing a gun into New Zealand. It wasn't that it was particularly onerous or anything of this nature. It simply took time. The process included going to the police and filling out a form. After completion of the form, they inspected the rifles. At that point, I was expected to pay $25 New Zealand for the gun permit. By the time I completed the gun form, had the guns inspected and then had to go change money to New Zealand dollars, I had missed my flight. This was compounded by the fact that the police had my passport and guns while I went to get the New Zealand dollars. The currency exchange booth would not give me New Zealand dollars without my passport. I was caught in a proverbial "Catch-22." The point to is that there was a simple way around this, had I known about it. One can apparently fax this gun form ahead to the police and it will be taken care of ahead of time with virtually no delay. Had I known this, I probably would not have missed my flight to Queenstown.
I would be happy to answer any questions anyone has regarding Glenroy Lodge or other aspects of our New Zealand trip.

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |

|
I've never sent in more than the hunt report form, but I just returned from one of the best experiences of my life!
I won a five-day hunt at Glenroy Lodge in New Zealand from the SCI "Centurion Club" planned giving program membership drive prize drawing. Included were a gold medal red stag, tahr, chamois and a silver medal fallow. Airfare wasn't covered but trophy fees and the daily rate for a hunter and a non-hunter were, so the quoted retail value was approximately $12,500 US. Generally, I don't win much, but this makes up for a lot!
My sister and her husband don't hunt, but we thought this would be an ideal break for them from caring for our terminally ill mother. This was their first vacation out of the states, so just getting passports added some flavor to the adventure.
Glenroy Lodge is only about 20 minutes from Queenstown, one of the prettiest towns I've ever seen. Even the airplane landing approach down a mountain valley is scenic! Our lunchtime arrival coincided with the departure of the group before us, and they were all exuberant over their hunt.
Besides us, there were two couples, and one individual hunter. Jim Hunter, the owner, really made us feel welcome, and paid as much attention to Jan and Greg as he did to me or the other paying hunters. Jim is an excellent raconteur, with a wealth of experiences, and meals with him were always educational. The quality of food prepared by the chef, Chris, was better than most gourmet restaurants, and Jim gave us a broad exposure to New Zealand wines. We had visions of leaving a trail of triglyceride behind us as we left the table.
The lodge manager-cum-maid of all work, the lovely Sophia, booked day trips and gave shopping and sightseeing suggestions for the non-hunters.
Jim has 14,000 acres, with 7,000 acres behind the fence. Yes, the animals are enclosed but that's 11 square miles. I'm told this is now the largest private hunting area in New Zealand. It had already snowed enough to make the animals start coming down to the lower areas, so you could stand on the driveway and successfully glass.
During the first evening's conversation, Jim learned I've taken fallow deer in Texas, and suggested that instead of the included fallow, I take a feral sheep and goat. This saves him a more valuable animal, and gave me one additional species for the SCI World Hunting Awards program, so I was happy to agree.
He's got some excellent tahr and chamois on the property, but has a Mount Cook/Landsborough drainage mountain concession where they're free ranging. The helicopter flight to the area where we stalked them was fantastic, and something I wouldn't have experienced as a tourist. Visualize the Tetons, but multiplied by a factor of ten or more. Both animals were very good.
My red stag is really nice - 16 points, tall, and very symmetrical. Jim estimated it to score around 310, but apologized because he had thought it would be higher. (To tell the truth, if he had pointed out a gimpy spike, and said, "Okay, Dave, that's your deer," I couldn't complain, but this was icing on the cake.).
I upgraded my hunt by adding a wapiti. It's a nice 7 x 6 with long main beams and the tines are even but fairly short. Jim reduced the price as he thought it was an older animal, but still, where can you get an elk like this for $2,500?
Because I'd won the hunt, our only costs were $750 for the second non-hunter, $640 for trophy expediting, and $2,500 for the wapiti. Not bad, huh? Roundtrip airfare was $1,290 on United, booked through Linda Carroll at Falcon Travel in San Antonio.
The Glenroy Lodge operation is completely first-rate. The hunt could be as challenging or as simple as you want to make it. I believe they gave us all more value than we expected, as I think all the hunters were there on some sort of auction donation hunt. My stag was the second biggest of the four killed, and the smallest but still nice stag was killed the first hour the hunter was out.
This is only their second or third year of advertising, so I hadn't heard about it, but I'd been shopping for a New Zealand hunt and I do know several of the operators down there. Surprisingly, Jim's prices are about the same or even lower than other Kiwi Outfitters. He has a weeklong package hunt for six silver medal animals for $10,600.
Beautiful lodge, beautiful scenery, beautiful trophies. I'm saving up to go back!

I already have recommended the hunt. We are booked for May 2000. Alps of South Island for New Zealand are spectacular. That and lodge are worth the trip alone. Trout fishing is great. Tell subscribers they can import flies with them, but not tying materials. Go figure! |
