Decided to travel Delta Business Class with non stop service from Atlanta to J'burg. It was excellent - doubt I could have tolerated coach class with two total knee replacements. If you can scratch it out financially, it is well worth it to arrive well rested. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
None -- prepare for ticks. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
It was well worth the 6 days it took to find and get a reasonable shot at the Dugga Boy, which was a one shot kill with a handloaded Barnes 300 gr banded solid out of my .375 H and H magnum, easily the most thrilling shot of my life. Adding dangerous game to the hunt amazingly increases the intensity and enjoyment of not only the hunt itself but the preparation for it. I had fantastic fun preparing for it (my son and I shot over 900 rounds in preparation - good thing I was handloading) as well as the hunt itself. One of the best experiences of my life and I think my son's also. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
I can't recommend highly enough the image stabilized binocular (Canon 12x36 IS)- shop internet of just go to B and H Photography. Canon's are quite light now. I also soaked clothing in permethrin and sprayed on boots and avoided the ticks which are everywhere and can make you very sick. Needless to say take malaria prophylaxis. |

| Why? |
Gordon has had amazing success and experience and the preserve he hunts for plains game (which has Buffalo) and is, I think, appx. 45,000 hectares, is one of the best in RSA. He is a quality guy and superb hunter and guide and is licensed to hunt plains and dangerous game (only 5% of the PH's are so licensed). You are VERY likely to get your animals and at trophy sizes. You will likely be the only hunters in the preserve when you hunt. |

| Hunting Experience: |
I have hunted most of my life and lived in Colorado for a number of years. I have hunted with the bow also. These days I primarily hunt ducks and deer and hogs, but have killed elk, goats, pronghorns with the bow and rifle. |
| Physical Condition: |
At 69 I have seen my best days but still can get about well. Gordon will never push you beyond your capabilities, and is excellent at planning stalks, etc. Don't let poor physical condition stop you but the hunt will be enjoyed more the better shape you're in. |

I was disappointed in the African countryside. Not as pretty as I had imagined, so the drive from Pretoria to KZN was not pretty. However, Gordon's preserve has excellent bungalos for all and is gorgeous country overall. the bungalos had an outside nook with showers as well as jacuzi bathtubs, our own refrigerators, etc.! He catered the food from a nearby Zulu village and it was excellent. Being near the Indian Ocean, we even had fresh fish a couple of times. He had three trackers all of whom spoke English and were extremely fun to hunt with as well as being superb trackers. Tracking the Impala I was convinced we'd never find it though it was hit hard. I went with the trackers just to witness their superb work and try to learn something. What I learned was that I couldn't pick up the speck of blood they easily found (and never will) and realized how truly professional the outfit was. After 4 hours of tracking I told Gordon I'd be happy to pay for the animal, but not to put the fellows through an impossible task just for my consideration. I asked Gordon what he really thought our chances were of finding that animal, to which he replied without any hesitation, "100 per cent!" Needless to say we found the impala and largely due to Gordon's expertise in tracking as he was the one who finally spotted it primarily based on his knowledge of where it might go to ground as well as his expertise in tracking. I went on this hunt based on the experiences of several of my hunting friends, all of whom attested to Gordon's integrity as well as his expertise. To a person they considered him the best of the best and wouldn't hunt Africa with anyone else (and some had had previous PH experience). One fellow who has killed 2 lions, 2 leopards, a Sitatunga, several buffalo, as well as the rest of the plains animals said he'd quit hunting Africa if Gordon closes shop. Book a hunt with him while you can.

Hunt was great. Gordan delivered on everything he predicted. This is a great father/son hunt. The only bad thing was the long drive after the flight. We actually took 10 animals. The other father/son pair also had a great time and took more trophies than we did. Amazingly in only six days of hunting. |

Due to my decision to take my son on this safari in March, the long grass conditions limited our effectiveness, more so in Phongolo. Hunting either of these areas in May/June/July/August (prime safari months) would be the ideal timing and success that exceeded ours would be expected. |

Comments: |
Due to having to provide medical care to 2 flight attendants who were ill, my son and I were afforded the opportunity to fly in business class seats from Atlanta to Johannesburg. Needless to say, we have absolutely no complaints about our flight down there. That is really the way to fly but at around $5000 US per seat....most unreasonable. On the return flight, we got a full dose of the "cattle-car" treatment. The seats are just long enough to impede circulation from your middle thigh to your foot, causing them to constantly ache and fall asleep. The spacing between rows is so narrow that one cannot move from side to side without great effort. This, of course, has led to a battle royal over the exit row and bulkhead seating. I spoke with the flight attendants about this. They were acutely aware of the problems with the Airbus and said that when the planes start undergoing maintence this summer, the airline was going to increase the distance between rows to hopefully alleviate this problem. I have flown on the 747-400 on 3 previous safaris to Africa and the comparisons between the Boeing 747-400 and the Airbus A340-600 are glaring. The Boeing plane is much more user friendly/much more comfortable and is built with the American market in mind; the Airbus is built for small frame people and is a most uncomfortable experience for anyone of any size.. I'm 6'3 and 240 lbs. |

Rangefinders are helpful. Arriving in Africa having becomed accustomed to shooting off of shooting sticks (Stoney Point bipods and tripods). The vast majority of shooting is from a standing position. No reputable PH will allow shooting from a vehicle. |

From the moment we arrived until the moment we left to return home, we were treated like family. We were met at the airport and transported to Gordon's ranch on the outskirts of Pretoria where we spent the afternoon relaxing and getting over jetlag. We departed the next morning for the Kalahari where we started our safari. After the successes we enjoyed there, we transferred across the country to Phongolo NR in the KZN province where we completed our safari. The professionalism of Gordon and his associates was evident in everything that was done for us on this safari. I would recommend Gem Safaris without hesitation if a person wants a truly first class experience with truly first class people. I am looking forward to taking my youngest son on his graduation safari in 2007 and wouldn't think of taking him with anyone except Gordon Mace of Gem Safaris.
