This was not a collection safari for me (I have hunted with GHA here before) but rather strictly a handgun hunt with the goal of taking a Cape buffalo and a new world record red duiker. Accomplished both. I took three other hunter into Mozambique for the first time and all three achieved their hunting goals of Cape buffalo (2), crocodile, red duiker (2), sable, hyena, warthog (2), bush pig (2), leopard, suni (2), etc. |

Two of the three hunters with me were experienced African hunters with multiple safaris each. First time in Mozambique - unanimous praise for outfitter, area, animals and booking agent. Agent arranged firearms pre-clearance and Joberg accomodations before and after hunt - all excellent.

I thought I would provide a little background on this hunt. It originally was planned as a September 2000 buffalo and leopard hunt in Mozambique with Gerritt Louw, for myself and three other friends. At SCI 1999, a $2,500 deposit was paid (guaranteed refundable). Gerritt bailed on the hunt stating health and economic reasons and would not return the deposit. To his credit, he got Mark Haldane, of Game Hunters Africa, to honor our deposits on any hunt he had for sale.
We met Mark and his family at SCI 2000 and three of us decided to take the risk and schedule a hunt with his operation. Another of our party and I did not really want another plains game hunt but Mark offered us a 10 day hunt in an area that offered nyala for less than $5,000. Considering the fact that the $2,500 deposit was otherwise lost, my attitude was that this hunt really was only costing me less than $2,500 plus airfare.
I felt that the plains game hunt we did in South Africa in 1997 (my only other African safari) delivered everything they said they would and we had no real complaints (John X Safaris). However, Mark Haldane and his group, working at about 1/2 price, delivered way above our expectations. They gave 110 percent on everything with their eye solely on making sure that we had a terrific experience and we did. I would give Mark my highest recommendation and I will hunt with him again any time I can.
Accommodations varied depending on the concession we were hunting. We stayed in some beautiful lodges that were very comfortable and we stayed at one rather remote concession where bathing was by bucket from the river and food was cooked over the campfire. It was a wonderful trip!
I plan on getting that buffalo hunt done in 2002 and could use any recommendations you might have. Thanks for a great publication. I really do enjoy it.
