ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
I recently returned from a leopard hunt in the Bubiana Conservancy of Zimbabwe. The outfitter for this hunt was Harry Greaves of Fountain Safaris. My PH was Wayne Bartlett. The hunt would take place from 05/10/03-05/21/03.

Like many Americans, my wife and I have enjoyed hunting various game species with hounds. Hence, I was very intrigued after speaking with Warrick Evans at this year's SCI Convention about leopard hunting, as he specializes in hunting leopards with dogs. Warrick would arrange for my hunt in Zimbabwe with Fountain Safaris.

My wife and I have taken leopards in the more traditional way of blind hunting. However after this experience, I doubt that I would hunt leopards by any other way other than with dogs. With dogs, the technique involves finding fresh tracks (very much like mountain lion hunting) or looking for a fresh hit on a bait. One would then release the dogs and hopefully they would bring the leopard to bay. In my case Wayne found a fresh kill, and we were able to get on the leopard the next morning. One of the advantages of hunting with dogs is that you can be a bit more selective by only releasing the dogs when you have located a big track. After a very exciting chase, I was able to harvest a very big male leopard. But to me the real excitement of this hunt involves working with the dogs. It is hard to beat the excitement of chasing a leopard with dogs through various thickets, woods, hills, etc. I cannot recommend this hunt highly enough. Each of the folk who worked with me were honest, hardworking and generally very professional.

A few comments regarding Zimbabwe are needed. The country has definitely developed problems since my last visit several years ago.

Although the country remains beautiful and my wife and I felt very safe, one couldn't help but notice the lack of food for the general population and the long lines for gas and bread. The outfitters are coping, but it is proving tough. I visited with owners of some of the large farms (hunting ranches) who have been run off their land by the government. Some of the finest hunting ranches have been lost. Nonetheless, good hunting remains in Zimbabwe, but you will need to be selective about where to go. Make sure that you deal with reputable outfitters. That said, I totally agree with the position of The Hunting Report that it is important to continue to support the hunting industry in Zimbabwe. Good hunting remains, and the hunting industry needs to survive as the country awaits better days. As I write this I note that the country is in the midst of a general strike, but with luck this will be favorably sorted out in the near future. But it does suggest that we all will need to follow the situation closely.

Harry was kind enough to have me back in 2003 for a very modest fee to hunt eland and sable.
