Condition Comments: |
Many, many huge Blue Wildebeeste and Springbok. Burchell's Zebra are also abundant, Hartman's less so, but they are there. Saw dozens of Gemsbok every day. Also had no trouble finding really nice Red Hartebeeste. Impala were somewhat difficult - we did take one decent ram but wanted two and had trouble finding a decent second ram. Kudu were OK - we took one very nice 50" plus bull but wanted a second and found only one, which I missed - my fault completely. We did take one duiker but there were not many of them. We did not seek to take a steinbok but saw many. We also were not hunting leopards but several other hunters in camp took excellent leopard. |

We connected from Chicago to Windhoek through Frankfurt. Lufthansa was courteous and professional but acted as though they had never seen a gun case before. We had trouble getting it checked in, but although it took awhile, the ticket agent (both in Chicago and in Frankfurt (on the return) were very nice and everything got sorted out. Eventually. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
None. Wish we found more impala and that I hadn't missed my kudu. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Super huge blue wildebeeste. Watching my 12 year old son take a 50" kudu. Seeing non-game species like bat eared fox, aardwolf, monitor lizards, and pythons. We also saw non-huntable species like cheetah, black rhino, hippo, and crocodile. Climbing into a gorge to see bushman rock engravings. Enjoying time with our new friends. |

Recommendations: |
Gaiters were a great last minute addition to the duffel bag. Without them, my socks and boots were full of thorns, burrs and stickers. With them my feet were comfortable. Wish I had brought a pair of leather gloves to ward off the same thorns, burrs and stickers when crawling through the bush. Also, it was colder than we expected although we fortunately were prepared - we brought long sleeve shirts, sweaters, jackets, and down vests, as well as warm gloves and knit caps. Mornings and evenings in July were chilly. My son shot all of his game with a .308 - most animals were shot only once - a few, including black wildebeeste and red hartebeeste, needed an extra dose of .308. I shot all of my game with my .375 - I brought my .30-06 but left it in its case the whole time. Everything - except the kudu I missed - fell to a single shot. |

| Why? |
Paul Joubert and his team have put together a first class hunting destination. Basie Marais was a great PH - he found us all the game we wanted (except the warthog, which was the lowest priority game on our list) and got us reasonable shooting positions on everything. Not only was he great at putting us on the game we wanted, but he knew everything about the rocks, the history, the birds, the reptiles, the plants, and whatever else. When we weren't stalking or shooting, Basie was a great tour guide and a fun guy to hang around with. Our tracker, Reinhardt, was very skilled and helped us recover a Black Wildebeeste that required a 10km tracking job. Reinhardt was also a joy to be around for 10 days. We consider Basie and Reinhardt to be personal friends now. Weather was great, accommodations were first rate, food was excellent, PH was fantastic, we took almost everything we wanted, and had the time of our lives. What's not to love about that? |

I have been hunting for about 15 years and have hunted all manner of birds, black bear, mule deer, whitetail deer, elk, cougar, caribou, pronghorn, aoudad, javelina and predators in Montana, Texas, Illinois, and Canada. This was my first African safari. But not my last. |
| Physical Condition: |
Excellent. Really. But it wasn't necessary for this hunt. |

This hunt was particularly special for me because I took my 12 year old son. This caused no problem whatsoever - he truly learned the virtues of patience, particularly during the travel in both directions. He learned that some things in other countries are very different from home and some things are pretty much the same. He gained an appreciation for things he takes for granted at home. He also gained a lot of hunting experience in just 10 days. At home, he takes one animal on each hunting trip, which is usually limited to once per year. In Africa, he took six trophies plus jackals, spring hare, and a guinea fowl. He got a real lesson in tracking and blood trailing from a guy with some unbelieveable skill. He picked up a python. He stood on ostrich eggs in a nest (and was astonished that they don't break). He stood 20 yards from a hippo and chased a croc into the water. He saw all manner of animals in the wild, including a group of over 50 giraffe, bat eared foxes, an aardwolf, two huge monitor lizards, and tons of birds including a secretary bird, kori bustards, a martial eagle, a maribou stork, and many others. He learned that stalking a rhino in the bush is not nearly the same as looking at one in an enclosure in a zoo. He climbed a rock face and inspected 750-1000 year old bushman rock engravings. This was a great experience for a young man who is about to become an adult - certainly an experience I am certain he will never, ever, forget. And my pictures are awesome. Speaking of pictures, our PH - Basie, was nearly a professional photographer. Basie appreciates the importance of photos on a hunt. He carries two digital cameras - a small point and shoot and a Nikon D70 DSLR (the same camera I brought). He took numerous pictures with each camera, as well as pictures with both of my cameras - he takes numerous exposures of each pose and does a number of poses with each animal. At the conclusion of the hunt, he burned all of the photos from his two cameras onto a disk and gave us the disk to take home. Including my pictures from our 4 days at Etosha following the hunt, we had nearly 2,500 pictures.

They are in the process of electrifing the fence so they can bring in captured wild lions. They already have black rhino on the property. They are unhuntable but a great sight to see. There are also elephants on the property that are not huntable but give you a true feeling of a safari. I can't wait to return although the only animal I have not take on Erindi is Klipspringer. I will return to try again for the elusive 60-inch kudu.

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
My wife and I embarked on our first safari to Erindi on April 28th 2003. My wife has never been a hunter. After attending SCI convention the last two years, she decided she wanted a giraffe.
She took her giraffe with one shot from a Lazzeroni Hellcat. For those unfamiliar with Lazzeroni, that is a short action 375 with a 300 Nosler portion bullet.
Man did that gun do its job. Not only did she kill the giraffe but she also shot a 54-inch kudu with that rifle. She knocked the kudu off its feet about 150 yards.
My wife took four more trophies: blue wildebeest, mountain zebra, springbuck, and blesbuck.
The springbuck will be top 16 in SCI. My wife, Tammie, is now hooked all she wants to do is hunt. I am not sure if I have created a monster or not. All joking aside having my wife with me in Namibia was wonderful. I love sharing my hunting memories with her. It was more fun watching her than hunting myself.
Erindi is very abundant with game. They even have black rhino and elephant on the property. Neither can be hunter there. It was great to see those animals there. My hunt was a little overboard. We came to Erindi with the idea of hunting 14 animals when all was said and done; my wife and I had killed 29 trophy animals. The largest being an eland to the smallest being a damara dik dik. The damara dik dik must be the most expensive animal by the pound of all animals. They weigh about 5 to 6 pounds and have a $1,500 trophy fee.
The PH's at Erindi are truly wonderful. My PH was Corne, he could judge game wonderful. Every time we took an animal he had given us a score before we shot. He was within a ½ inch every time. The other PH in camp was Bossie, he is a very likeable man. Which every PH you get you will be blessed with great ability to find trophy animals and wonderful company.
Erindi offers another unique experience. They have a videographer along on your hunt. The get live footage of almost every animal you take and your hunting experience.
Lee Ann was my wife's videographer. She did a wonderful job of videoing our hunt and experience. Warren was the other videographer.
Paul Joubert and his wife, Wyennete have made Erindi one of the premier hunting ranches in Namibia. Their hard work and willingness to please their clients is unsurpassed. I have been on 50 or more hunts and I have never experienced such a wonderful place. The food, accommodations, and companionship are first rate.
