Game Condition Comments: We hunted in savana and on very large islands. It hadn't rained in four months but the Kavango River and back waters were rising because of rains in Angola. I saw more than 500 elephant, mostly breeding herds. We had to work to find the old bulls. I shot my elephant on the 4th day and the cape buffalo on the 10th. Had a great time.

SUMMARY REMARKS

Problems of Hunt: Got the land crusder stuck crossing a backwater. We just used the boat for a couple days hunting the islands while they brought a tractor in from Eden to pull it out. Highlights of Hunt: Hunting the dangerous game was full of adventure. We hunted hard to find the old bulls, wading across lakes and swamps and avoiding the hippos and crocs in the rivers. Whatever size the trophy, it was worth it. I shot the elephant standing in chest high water. The heart shot was good and the follow up shot was through the lungs. The bull went 30 yards and was down for good. The trackers were all local and knew the area very well from a lifetime hunting. Equipment Recommendations: Two pair of boots, you will get wet and it is nice to at least start the day dry. The 350 grain soloids for my .375 H&H worked well for the cape buffalo and the .470 double was enough gun for the elephant. Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? yes Why? Dries Alberts is a very knowlegeable PH and enjoyable to hunt with. I would gladly do this again with him.

Eden was busy culling kudu at the time I was there so the game was a little skittish. They were also capturing live game. Even so there was plenty of area to hunt on the ranch. Dries' wife Stacey Alberts is from St Louis and was a great help seting up the trip and answering my questions. Dries' family came to South Africa in the 1600s, Moved to Angola when the British pushed them out then ended up in Namibia in the early 1900s. Lots of history.

Trophy quality has always been exceptional, especially for species like kudu, eland and gemsbok - but never this good. I am booked to return later this year and at least once in 2011.

SAA to Windhoek. Airline Service: Poor Airline Comments: United once again failed to impress. They delayed takeoff in Kalispell for no reason so I missed connection in Denver. I still had a chance to meet up with my group for the Atlantic leg, but United could not get the ground ramp (stairs) pushed up to the jet at Dulles. Took 15 minutes to get off the plane (they would not allow me to go down the service stairs or jump 4 feet to the tarmac), so I missed my flight to Joburg by 2 minutes. I pitched a fit about the loss, but United only offered $250 compensation. If they don't come through with more, I will never fly with them again. SAA was perfect, even with their ramp up to the World Cup. Note - Joburg has changed. I arranged firearms permit assistance through Gracy and Africa Sky Guest House. We sailed through in minutes.

Took a beautiful Selous type zebra.

Problems of Hunt: There had been a huge amount of rain flooding plains areas that widely distributed game this year. There were however decent numbers of buffalos, hippos and elephants in the area. Not much of a problem really. Highlights of Hunt: I was able to take a huge 40 inch buffalo with 16 inch bosses. This was an old dagga boy who was tracked for 4 hours before finally catching up to him in dense thornbrush at midday. We had to wait a tense 10 to 15 minutes for him to stand up for a shot at 20 yards due to thickness of brush. The absolute highlight was having my wife 10 yards behind me when the shot went off. This was her first safari that we scheduled to occur during her birthday. What a great feeling to have her with me on the trip. She was thrilled as we chased him for two more follow up shots. Doesn't get much better than that. Equipment Recommendations: Be sure and locate some of the running shoes that drain water as we were wading most every day. The water was clear and crisp and not that challenging. I would have brought a fishing rod as we saw numerous fish in the clear water on the boat ride to hunting areas each morning. Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? This was an absolutely professionally run operation. The PH was exceptionallly knowledgeable and able to put us on buffalo most days. This was my wife's first safari and it was extremely remote, however every effort was made to keep her comfortable and happy. We were told that she was the first woman who had been in that camp in the Caprivi. She would gladly go back. We are planning to go back for the eland we missed at Eden's normal hunting area.

SUMMARY REMARKS

Problems of Hunt: Absolutely none. Getting to Africa and back home with your luggage and guns and putting up with all the airline rules and regulations can be very trying. Highlights of Hunt: Watching the leopard come to the bait at 4:00 PM in broad daylight. The leopard laid down and looked at the blind, licked his paws, flicked his tail in the air, jumped into the tree and fed on the bait, jumped out of the tree and fed on the bait on his back legs and finally presented a broadside shot in the sitting position. While hunting for eland we bumped into a big kudu bull and cow. My PH Naude Alberts carefully got me into position for a 60 yard shot. This kudu has 60 3/8 and 58 1/2 in horns. How lucky can a guy get? Hunting eland was challenging and we spent many days following tracks and getting busted by the wind, other animals and me making to much noise. What a victory when we finally caught up to eight bulls right at last light! Jamy has established camps in the Caprivi strip for elephant, hippo, crocodile and buffalo hunting. We went by boat through hippos and crocodiles to the islands to hunt for buffalo. Watching the trackers find the buffalo bull using their knowledge of the area and following tracks was awesome. The buffalo went down in his tracks with one shot to the shoulder from my .375 Ruger. This was one of the most exciting hunting experiences of my life. Equipment Recommendations: Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? The entire staff of Eden Hunting made this truly a hunt of a lifetime. The PH's were very knowledgeable, the camps and hunting areas were awesome and I was able to get two of the big five with a 60 inch kudu as a bonus.

Game Condition Comments: Elephant and leopard hunting in Bushmanland - Eden has 12 year lease on 2 million acres - This is second year - need 3-5 more years to put in wells and for animals to get used to it. Should be great then.

Giraffe - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: Very good. Game Sought But Not Taken: Game Condition Comments: Amazing leopard opportunity. Property produced six leopard in two weeks. We left two huge males, one on bait and another on a natural (cow) kill. For mine, we used dogs, catching up to him and another (much larger) tom. The one taken was 135 pounds. This was my fifth hunt at Eden, and I am booked to go back at least once per year until I die.

I have taken several big kudu (up to 58 inches), a great sable (43 inches), great gemsbok, eland, impala, waterbuck, warthog, giraffe, ostrich, springbok and blesbok in five trips to Eden. Perfect place for family safari as well. Area is privately owned and subject to extremely light hunting pressure. My favorite place in the world to hunt.

The filming company we used was Osprey Filming and they are excellent with a tremendous amount of experience. Our cameraman, Lauri Nanthwaite, is considered one of the top cameramen in the business, plus he is a wonderful person to have on safari.
