Major Game Animals Taken: Rhebok, Vaal - Availability: Average - Trophy Size: Very good 8 plus inches. Reedbuck, Mountain - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: Good 7 inches. Gemsbok/Oryx - Availability: Average - Trophy Size: Good 37 plus inches thick. Springbok - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: Good 14 inches. Game Sought But Not Taken: Kudu, Greater - Availability: Not found big enough. Bushbuck - Availability: Game Condition Comments: Ashley Hobson is a very good PH. Average trophy quality easy to get, but you must work a lot for the big ones, especially Vaal rhebok and the big gemsbok. Be prepared to shoot at long range. I took my gemsbok at 400 yards and Vaal rhebok at nearly 300 yards.

Problems of Hunt: Not really. Difficult hunt and approach for vaal rhebok and good gemsbok. You must be in good shape (mountain hunt) and be ready to shoot far. Highlights of Hunt: Take a very good vaal rhebok - 8 inch plus after three days after it and a very old and thick 37 inch male gemsbok at 400 yards. Equipment Recommendations: Know your rifle's ballistic's for long shots and be ready to climb and walk a lot. Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? True hunt, superb scenery and very challenging game, very good PH and excellent food.

This hunt was purchased at the 2004 Houston Safari Club Auction and was the first trip to Africa for me, my wife and another couple that are our best friends. We all tried to think of any way the trip could have been better and could not think of one thing. After talking with countless people that have hunted Africa before, our expectations were pretty high. This trip exceeded them all. Andrew Austin is as good as they get. I am very peculiar about who I hunt with, but after spending 10 days hunting with Andrew, I would hunt along side him anywhere.

There has been so much rumor, speculation and all-around misinformation about taking guns to Africa I thought it would be worthwhile to tell you our experience. We flew into Cape Town from Atlanta on South African Airways. I had been told that: You could not take semi-automatic guns. You could not take two guns of the same caliber. To avoid the first we elected to leave the Benelli shotgun at home. To avoid the second we filled out a Customs Form 4457 for each gun, one for my wife's gun and one for my gun. Both are 7mm Weatherby Mags. You do have to register your guns and ammunition when you arrive. I had filled out their Temporary Firearm Import Application (SAP 311) form before I left the States, one for my rifle and one for my wife's. This saves you some time when you get there. I downloaded it from the internet. I spoke to the policeman at the airport while he was filling out their paperwork. He told that one set of documents was all that was needed and that once I had their Firearms Permit I was free to take the guns anywhere in South Africa without further hassle - just be sure to have the permits at all times. A word of caution. If you are staying at a hotel, not connected with your safari before or after a hunt, be sure the hotel will accept and store your guns. Many will not. If not, then you have to arrange a licensed gunsmith to store them (for a fee, of course). You PH should know all about this. Just be sure and ask before you leave the States. This was our experience going into Cape Town. What it is like at Johannesburg could be different.

The South African Tourist Board has done a great job managing the game on these reserves. This is not a typical South African ranch hunt. It is a real African bush experience. There are lots of rhinos, and other big game to see like: elephant, buffalo and giraffe. Lodges and staff were also great.
