SUMMARY

 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
Absolutely none. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Shooting the leopard and completing my Big Five. Going on a week-long tour of Namibia with my wife and Dirk as the guide, upon conclusion of the hunt. Having the opportunity to hunt with Dirk, who is a gentleman and a sportsman, in addition to being a consummate PH. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
I used a custom .338 Winchester for everything and it worked quite well. Good binos are helpful, and you will appreciate a warm jacket at night. Be prepared for 200 yard plus shots. |
| Would You

yes |
| Why? |
First class camp in every way, abundant, high quality trophy animals, beautiful countryside, excellent PH. |

I had gone on two (2) previous 21-day leopard hunts in another country and never got a shot at a cat. All I needed was a leopard to complete the Big Five. I decided to book with Dirk, whom I knew, but had never previously hunted with. it was the correct decision. Dirk put me on a leopard two hours into the first day in broad daylight. The cat was standing atop a koppe 191 yards away and I killed it with one shot. The rest of the hunt, after the leopard was down was pure relaxation. My wife was visiting with friends in South Africa whilst I was hunting in Namibia. Once the hunt was concluded, she flew to Windhoek and Dirk took us on a week long tour of Namibia, including Etosha National Park, Windhoek, Walvis Bay, the Skeleton Coast and the Namib Desert. We had a fantastic time. He is not only a superb hunter, but a great host as well. I've booked a trophy bull elephant/hippo/croc/cape buff hunt with him in the Caprivi for 2014.

Anticipation exceeds reality. If one lives by this rule many a disappointments is averted and yes, oh yes, sometimes like a snowstorm in New Orleans, the surprise of the actual overwhelms all expected hopes.
Namibia in the late winter months of 2004 provided the proverbial "better than expected." Halfway through an eighteen-day hunt my PH, Dirk de Bod and I are motoring in his Landcruiser searching for an exceptional black wildebeest. The landowner had advised us upon our arrival that we should be patient in our quest for this animal because his resident herd contained some really great bulls. Our patience was getting as worn as the elbows on my grandpa's sweater when Dirk, who was looking for solo bulls, (solo equals titanic), suddenly brakes, glasses, exits and grabs for the shooting sticks. Interpretation - the stalk was on! Some three quarters of a mile and one hour later we find ourselves hiding behind a rock outcropping head high some 200 yards from our target. First shot is a miss, but the animal is confused and cannot figure out our whereabouts. Finally after another missed effort the "beest" broadsides at 360 yards and I finish him with a fourth shot. We had never left our original position and the animal still had not seen us. His death run was approximately 200 yards from were we found him with nary a spark of life left in him. Tough bugers, this African game! The prior nine days of hard hunting had brought a small bounty of a stallion mountain zebra, a warthog, and a magnificent steenbok that went nearly 6 inches. The warthog went to a good cause - its skull and tusk were to adorn Dirk's "Safari Namibia" game lodge. A new structure with all the amenities, it was spawned from the fertile mind and experience of Dirk, a 20 year veteran PH who has built many hunting camps. The zebra and steenbok were destined for a pedestal mount and life-size depiction, respectively, for my trophy room.
To shorten my tale, suffice to say, I was hunting trophy quality game, and my research lead me to Namibia and de Bod's company. This hunt was my second with him, and I was not disappointed. He has concessions the length and breadth of his country, all of which he had earmarked for the wildlife specialty you are seeking, from 55" plus kudu to heavy based eland. You can book a longer stay, as I did, and travel to these areas or choose to remain at one concession on a shorter stay and have excellent success either way.
Getting back to the black wildebeest... it measured large enough to score number one Namibian and should make up 5 SCI. Dirk knew it was going to book high but waited to tell me until we walked up to the dead animal. His purpose was to avoid making me more nervous on the shot than I already was. Good thinking, for any more pressure and that wildebeest may still be grazing in Namibia! This right place at the right time scenario seemed to kick start the balance of my hunt. Of the ten animals ultimately taken, I'll mention a southern roan that fell just short of the 30" mark and a waterbuck that scored number four Namibian and will hopefully score top ten SCI. But that is a story for another day.
Tired of shooting animals before their time? Maybe a cure has been found with "Safari Namibia" and its owner Dirk de Bod. Concurrent with Dirk's emphasis on mature animals, the Namibian game department has a program named "Namibian Game Fields" that awards a gold certificate and gold medal for mature trophy quality animals. The medal is awesome and is worth the hunting effort. I will definitely try for more with Dirk. He specializes in quality game... when you hunt with his outfit, he is your man with no substitutes, In short, you hunt with the "one that brung you." No excuses... just excellent hunting! Contact Safaris Namibia - Dirk de Bod - you won't be sorry!

 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
It had to end. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Taking the new # 3 Namibian Impala, 25 inch Red Hartebeest, quality of all trophies taken. Sharing Africa with my wife. Having a claw-foot bathtub with hot water in the middle of no-where for my wife. Watching my Warthog chase the trackers through the brush (I shot it poorly). The trackers did not enjoy the experience as much as I did. The quantity of game, including Roan and Sable. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
No special equipment required; as with any hunt the quality of your trophies will have a lot to do with your ability to shoot. |

Yes |
| Why? |
I have been in business for over 25 years and have simply never met a professional more dedicated to his craft than Dirk de Bod. This is the second time I have hunted with him. His camps are unmatched and if size matters (which it does) this is the PH to hunt with. I've done my homework and believe this PH's trophy quality in unsurpassed. |

This PH really goes the extra mile. Many Safari operations only hunt on their own concessions to keep from having to split the trophy fees with another concession owner resulting in very poor trophy quality. On our hunt we hunted 5 separate concessions to optimize our chances at exceptional animals of each species. While this required some traveling it was well worth it. An added bonus is getting to see more of the country. "Safari's Namibia" is not the cheapest option in a Namibian Safari nor are they trying to be. They were worth every penny I paid them. Most hunting was low fence with one exception. My Waterbuck was taken on a 70,000-acre concession with a perimeter fence. My trophy shipment reached my taxidermist in a little less than 4 months in excellent condition. I have talked to many hunters that have come back from Africa and been disappointed because the Safari Company/PH promised a lot of things that weren't delivered. Mostly surprise expenses, lack of game and/or poor trophy quality. Dirk exceeded all my expectations.
