Caribou - Availability: Upon arrival in the first area I hunted, the guide informed me the outfitter knew there were no bulls there and spent his time shooting ptarmagin while we looked for caribou. The second area (where I also hunted on foot) was recently heavily hunted with four wheelers by the natives (per the guide). |

No mature bulls in either areas I hunted. Not even an average bull. Definitely not the trophy caribou hunt advertised nor one of the vast remote areas in Alaska he advertised. |

Date: January 19, 2003 To: The Hunting Report From: Dick Gunlogson Master Guide RE: Complaint from James Smith
I invited Jim Smith to take advantage of a one-half price cancellation hunt which became available. Jim is from New Jersey.
I regret that the hunt was unsuccessful. As our record shows, we take a great deal of pride in making every hunt successful, if possible. For some reason known only to the caribou the bulls chose this time period to make themselves scarce. We had one other hunter who was unsuccessful as well. He was not unhappy with his hunting opportunity.
Apparently Jim was not able to accept the possibility of an unsuccessful hunt. Once in a while, in nearly 40 years of service to client, I have encountered this obsession with success where, a hunt, if unsuccessful, suddenly becomes a nightmare in every respect.
Personally, in early January 2002. I flew to Dushanbe, Tajikistan, for an Afghan Urial hunt with Urie Matison. It was unsuccessful, seeing only one ram on the hunt, but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, magnificent country, new people - it was, after all, a hunt, and real hunting does no come with a guarantee.

Note: Hunter also took ptarmigan and ducks. This is a growing herd so they are widely scattered. They are in excellent condition, very fat. Our group of eight took big bulls but perhaps only one went B & C if that. There is so much else to do there that everyone shot the first big bull they saw so as to fish and hunt ptarmigan and ducks. |

|
I thought that an e-mail might be an easy way to give you the text for my hunt report.
I met Dick Gunlogson at the DSC Saturday night banquet in January 1, 1998. Dick happen to be seated at the table with me, my wife Norah and our friends Rob and Lynn Drawbridge. Dick and I discussed his hunting operation and experience as an Alaskan outfitter and pilot. He agreed to send me a brochure upon his return to Alaska.
When I received his info I called several of his past clients and received uniformly great reviews. Rob and I agreed to book a hunt with Dick on his next available spring hunt which happened to be May 2000. In the intervening two years we received regular communications from Dick and his wife Janice. Each newsletter brought more exciting news of big brown bears taken by Dick's client as well as news of his sheep hunts.
We had dinner with Dick again at the 1999 and 2000 DSC conventions. Each time our excitement and friendship with Dick grew. Finally on Sunday May 7th, Rob and I departed to Seattle and on to Anchorage. We were torn between the need to keep our weight down for the trip into the hunting areas in Dick's super cub (Dick does all his own flying and had encouraged us to have baggage that would fit in a cub) and the desire to take all the gear we needed for the changeable weather we were to face.
We arrived in Anchorage at midnight on the 7th and were not scheduled to depart to Cold Bay until 1:00PM on the 9th. We spent the 8th kicking around Anchorage and recovering from the long flight and late arrival the night before (Midnight local time or 3 AM Dallas time). Our departure to Cold Bay was delayed on the 9th until 6 PM so we were not able to arrive into Dick's main camp until late on the 9th. This resulted in us flying into our hunting areas on the 10th, the first day of the hunting season. We were not allowed to hunt on the 10th do to local regulations prohibiting flying and hunting on the same day. I spent the afternoon of the 10th glassing the rims of Cathedral Valley with my PH' Bob Jaro. That evening Bob and I shared dinner over a Coleman stove. The Bomb Shelter tents that Dick furnished were the new double-sided version so they were warm and secure. A cot and a quality sleeping bag were a nice comfort.
The next morning Bob and I were up leisurely since Bob assured me that we would not see any bears before 10:00 am. Bob advised that the single time zone for Alaska resulted in the sun being 3 hours behind the clock as far west as we were on the Aleutian chain. We left camp at about 8:30 AM. Sure enough we saw our first bear at about 10:15 AM. We hunted all day seeing numerous bears. We saw lone males, sows and sows with cubs.
In the early afternoon we saw a bear top the ridge to our east and descend the approximately 3,000 feet vertical snow covered mountain side. Bob and I decided this bear was worth a closer look so we stalked across the valley floor to intercept the bear as he made the valley floor. We travel the half mile on level water soaked ground in about the same time the bear covered 1,000 feet of decent on a snow cover mountain side with snow over 15 feet deep. This bear turned out to be a 9 1/2-footer with a great thick coat but not the bear we were looking for so we passed on him. We had some great fun as the bear closed within 35 yards up wind of us trying to determine what we were. When he circled at 35 yards and got our scent he covered the 2-mile valley floor and another 3,000-foot vertical assent without stopping. What a site and an amazing feat.
In the early afternoon Bob spotted a bear at the head of Cathedral Valley. Bob advised that when he had seen bears in that area in the past they had generally been large bears. We decided it would be worth the hike to get a better look. What a mistake for me! I had never been on snowshoes in my life let alone on snowshoes and in hip waders at the same time. After four grueling hours we had seen some great scenery and established that the bear was in fact a small male
We were back at the center of the valley when we spotted a very large male on the west side of the valley. We moved to a new and better vantage point and broke out the spotting scope. Even from a mile away it was clear that this was far and away the largest bear we had seen yet. It was getting late, after 8:00 PM, but we decided to stalk to a point 250 yards below and down wind from the bears resting point. The bear was sunning on the south side of a ravine filled with alders. We crossed several draws still cover with snow bridges. For those like myself who have not had this treat let me explain. The 15 to 20 feet of snow that falls in this area falls so fast and freezes to quickly that the snow completely bridges draws and ravines to the point that they disappear to the casual or untrained eye. As the snow begins to melt these bridges melt from the bottom up. If you happen to walk on a snow bridge at the wrong time you end up with a free fall of undetermined length.
We were able to approach to within 250 yards before the bear sensed we were there. We were likely given away by my heavy breathing if not our foot falls on the snow. I managed a lung shot at 250 yard with my 416 Remington mag. As anticipated the bear rolled into the ravine to his north after being shot. I shot at him again in the ravine but the alders likely deflected the shot. As he came out of the ravine I hit him again.
At this point my gun was empty and my PH Bob became concerned that the bear would make the top of the ridge and drop out of site. So Bob began to shoot. The bear made his way to about 200 yards up the mountain before the shot in his lungs had the desired effect and he stopped climbing and began to traverse the hill to the next ravine. Bob put on his snowshoes and followed the bear up the hill as I spotted for Bob and advised the bear's location. The bear entered the next ravine from the top. We agreed Bob would go in from the top and I would enter the ravine from the bottom. When Bob entered the alders from the top the bear was within 15 yards of the top of the ravine. Bob gave him a finishing shoot as he stood up.
After some effort we were able to roll the bear to an open area for photos and skinning. At this point I "discovered" that my camera would not work without film and had to rely on Bob's trusty disposal camera for pictures. The tale of the tape was a bear that squared out over 10 feet and scored 28 3/1 6. This bear certainly exceeded my expectations and was well worth the 2 1/2 year wait. I am having a full body mount done by Matt Hudson in San Angelo and the bear will occupy a corner of the hunting lodge at our Wildcat Mountain Ranch.
I cannot say enough good things about Dick Gunlogson and his operation. When I left camp after 6 days there were seven bears in the skinning shed with three over ten feet and 28 inch skull measurements. Three of the other four were over 9 1/2 feet and just under 28 inches.
If you are looking for a true trophy brown bear hunt do your self a favor and add Dick Gunlogson to you list of possible outfitters.

I saw between 400 and 500 bears in 11 days of hunting. Of these probably 40 were trophy class boars. Of the 12 hunters in Dick's camp this spring, 11 scored on bears, one was still afield when I left, five or six will make B & C and one monster has a 30 inch skull and an 11 foot hide. This place was full of bears! Big bears! |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
The only problem was that I had to leave. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Spectacular hunt, camps, etc. Seeing hundreds of bears leaving their dens high up 4000-foot mountain sides. Seeing early spring come to this remote part of the earth. Seeing the Bering Sea and the coastline. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Excellent quality rain gear is critical (Helly Hansen). Bring good quality rubber boots as you will walk a lot on hard-to-walk-on ground and cross lots of streams. Good water proof gloves are important. A comfortable large pack that's water proof freighter-frame with moose bag. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
Yes |
| Why? |
This possibly was the most thrilling, rewarding hunt I've been on. Dick Gunlogson has the organizational aspects down to a fine science. The food was totally unbelievable for a wilderness hunt (steak, salad, halibut) nothing from a can. His flying is amazing. Also, when you combine this with the awesome scenery of this remote portion of Alaska and throw in a whole lot of big bears, you have an unforgetable experience. It is well worth the price of admission! |

| Physical Condition: |
Good to excellent. It will really be helfpul to be in good shape for this hunt as you will climb, snow-shoe and cover lots of ground (up to 15 miles per day) all wearing a pack full of rain gear and food. Being able to do this day after day will increase your chances. |

Plenty of sheep. 160 B&C and up are there if you can find them. Most are 135-150 class. Well managed area with plenty of old rams, 10 years and older. Animals are hunted and are shy leaving the drainage when they spot you. |
