Problems of Hunt: None whatsoever - the best guided hunt I have ever experienced. Fantastic all around. I saw 4 good legal rams in the first 2 1/2 days of the hunt. Highlights of Hunt: Working very hard and taking a great full curl 9+ year old ram. Added bonus of a 400+ inch caribou bull on the very last morning while waiting for the aircraft to pick me up. Overall a great team effort between myself & the guide and assistant guide - 20+ hours of hiking, stalking and hard work for the sheep. Amazing country and amazing hunting. The hunt I will never forget. A friend and I chose Deltana Outfitters for a fully guided caribou hunt in 2010. My friend had a bad experience with an outfitter in the lower 48 and I had a bad past experience with a fishing guide in Alaska, so we made sure we did our homework. We took the time to check out the outfitter and their references. All the references were excellent with many people hunting with Deltana for many years and for different species. Ralph Miller and Jim Weidner were very easy to deal with, straight forward in answering questions and most of all, very honest! Overall, the hunt was outstanding! One of the most unique things about Deltana is their exclusive rights to a portion of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). Because of this, we had no hunting pressure from other hunters for the entire time of our hunt. They provided prompt and personal service to and from the airport, with a great meal waiting for us when we arrived at base camp. Ralph and Jim were true professionals that knew all about the caribou herds in the ANWR hunting area and they put us right where we needed to be. Deltanas base camp was excellent, with great food and permanent cabins for the hunters before and after hunting out of the spike camps. One thing that impressed us was that both Ralph and Jim were at the base camp for the entire caribou and sheep hunting season to ensure things ran smooth. Their pilots were highly experienced, safe and very knowledgeable of the area we were hunting. All the equipment supplied by Deltana, from the aircraft to the back packs and camp gear, was in excellent condition and of high quality. The packing list from Deltana was perfect with no excessive or unneeded items. The spike camp was in a great location, surrounded by beautiful terrain, and it was very comfortable. I was impressed by Ralph and Jims selection of our guide, Logan Canton, who was very aggressive and experienced in guiding in Alaska. He wanted to go to the Caribou and not just wait for them to come to us. This proved to be a big factor in our success of two caribous each. After I had my two caribou and my friend only had one, we decided to move spike camp locations in order to find more game. Ralph and Jim moved us with no problems, hassles or extra cost. They put us in another great location, where the next day my friend promptly filled his second tag. The care for the meat and trophies was also excellent with fly out service from the field to base camp, where the staff was waiting to salt and dry the hides and butcher and freeze the meat. The meat was ready to be shipped on the morning we had to fly out of Prudhoe Bay. They handled all the other logistics for the meat and trophies, which made the post hunting trip home easy. My meat and trophies arrived to me and my taxidermist in perfect condition and ready to be eaten and mounted. Both my caribou look great on my walls and my family and friends loved the meat. If you are looking for a giant coastal Brown Bear this is the outfitter to go with. Deltana has a tremendous concession in unit 9 on the AK Peninsula. The weather is down right nasty there but the Penisula grows the largest brown bears in the world. The base camp is located in Sand Point and is very comfortable and has all of the conveniences of home. From there you will fly approximately 30 minutes to your spike camp. The spike camps are smack in the middle of some of the best brown bear country you will find. The guides are knowlegeable, experienced & do everything they can to get you a 9 foot bear or larger. The spike camps are well equiped and each camp has a satilite phone. Curt Bedingfield, who is a retired AK trooper, is the bush pilot and is the best in the business. There were 10 hunters this spring and 9 out of 10 killed huge bears. The one hunter who was not successful decided to pack it in early because of bad weather.

Problems of Hunt: None whatsover with outfitter, logistics, equipment, guide, etc. Although some bad weather is the norm and is expected, the weather throughout my hunt was unusually bad - rain, heavy fog for a majority of hunt, limiting Sheep hunting opportunity to two and a half of six days. I had a chance to move on a group of Rams late afternoon on the last day of the hunt, but simply ran out of time. Highlights of Hunt: Stalking and taking a nice bull Caribou in the Ribdon River Valley inside the ANWR. Great hunt and textbook stalk orchestrated by my guide - really enjoyed hunting with him. Beautiful, very isolated country. Equipment Recommendations: Take the best boots you can afford; good waterproof, windproof gear is essential. A good trekking pole is also very useful. Be prepared for some bad weather and hard work. Get in shape. Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? A great hunt and great outfitter. I did a significant amount of research and homework before selecting Deltana, and I was not disappointed, in spite of not harvesting a Sheep.

Very pleased with the hunt. Dave Walters was my guide and he worked hard for my success. Each day we covered many miles and gained a lot of altitude only to glass for hours on end looking only at ewes and lambs, but that is sheep hunting. Game Sought But Not Taken: Game Condition Comments: I located my bear the first morning within 20 minutes of setting up to glass. Guide located the bear at 8:20 am and I took the bear at 10 am. We had the bear skinned and back at camp by 3 pm. Naturally, that was the only bear I needed to see - a lifetime bear. I saw and counted 18 bears on the beach in Deltana's concession as I flew to base camp.

Be in good shape and prepared to endure some tough weather and conditions but if you're a sheep hunter, you'll understand that it's part of the experience. Deltana is a great outfit. They are ethical, hard working and do their best to please the client. Billy Molls (my personal guide) is as good as any I've had the pleasure to hunt with. You will not go wrong with these folks. They also have an excellent moose area and do not overhunt any of the concessions.
