Ask Vaugh why he cancelled my safari 5 days before leaving. I lost a lot of money on air fees and went to Zimbabwe, which I never wanted to go back to. Wendell made all arrangements for Zimbabwe. I never heard a single word from Vaughn - no phone, no email, no nothing. |

I would never let Vaughn in this country to sell hunts if I had it my way. I spent one year checking out and planning for this hunt, with my companion. What a major disappointment, and last minute turmoil. I would have lost all money and air fares had I not taken the hunt in Zimbabwe. |

Email from Hunter's Quest International LLC to The Hunting Report
Barbara,
Thanks for contacting regarding Tom Koerwitz Hunt.
Tom contacted me in 2008 about a non-export Elephant hunt. We talked about it for a couple years, eventually he decided to book the hunt I offered with Vaughan Fulton Classic Safaris.
I have booked for Vaughan since 2003, when he obtained the Ehirovipuka concession South of Etosha. He and I did a lot of business in that area and subsequently when he moved his operation to the Caprivi Strip, I naturally sold hunts for him in that area as well.
This particular hunt that Tom booked was a Non-Export Elephant Bull Own-Use Elephant. The council in the Caprivi had a certain quota of Elephant to be taken as food for the local community.
I had booked every single own-Use Elephant hunt that Vaughan had in the two concessions of Salambala and Kasika from the time he started hunting there. These hunts were very popular and quite successful, as most everyone shot their Elephant on day 1 or 2. Everyone up to this point had taken an Elephant. These Elephants were 30lbs +/- they were Bulls and the price was quite good at $11,500-$12,500.
Less than a week before Tom was scheduled to go to Namibia I got a very disturbing hunt report from one of my hunters. He did shoot his Elephant on the first day, but was not hunting in the area that we discussed, and was hunting with a completely different company than he was booked for. This was a surprise to me.
Obviously this threw up a red flag! I tried to contact Vaughan by phone, and email with no luck. I did not waste any time in contacting Tom and seeing what we could do about salvaging his hunt.
Turns out, Vaughan was on a Leopard hunt in another area with no cell reception so I could not talk to him about the situation.
Vaughan did get back to me, but it was after all the details and decisions were made to cancel Tom's hunt and rebook him elsewhere.
When I got the call from the returning hunter, detailing the problems he had, I was on vacation with my family in Colorado. I emailed Tom to contact me ASAP!
I explained to Tom that I thought his hunt was in jeopardy. I was not comfortable with him leaving for Namibia in a few days for this hunt. I told him I had no real concrete evidence that his hunt was in danger, but based on the report from the last hunter something was definitely wrong.
I told him he had some options. Cancel his hunt outright, try to reschedule elsewhere or go to Namibia and hope I am wrong. Luckily, he did choose to abandon his hunt in Namibia.
Understandably he was very disappointed that the plug was pulled on his hunt. He said he was looking forward to going Elephant hunting and wanted to know what else I could offer in the same timeframe.
With 5 days to go before his departure, our choices were limited. I did manage to find an operator in Zimbabwe who had quota, who said he would guarantee a bull. However, his rate was much higher than the hunt Tom had purchased.
I worked with the outfitter to lower the hunt cost. I matched his discount dollar for dollar out of my commission to get the hunt down to an affordable level. I would up paying almost all my commission back into the hunt to make sure Tom had a good hunt. The outfitter lowered the trophy fees on some of the animals to make it work out for Tom.
A lot of discounting and price changing was done to get Tom a hunt for a Bull Elephant for almost exactly the same cost as he was paying in Namibia. The only hurdle that remained was the cost of changing his airfare, which turned out to be significant because of change and cancellation penalties. It is worth noting that Vaughan refunded the hunters cost and we used that to buy the hunt in Zimbabwe.
What we didnt know at the time is that Vaughan had given up the rights to Salambala due to a conflict with the community, and lost the rights to Kasika, which is a story that he will need to explain. The details of this are up to Vaughan to explain, because I am not sure I know the full story.
I can say that Vaughan has treated my hunters very well from the time I started booking with him in 2003 until the time he lost the areas in the Caprivi. I also know that Vaughan did everything in his power to honor the hunts he had booked for 2010. As I found out later, he bought quota from other operators to accommodate the hunts he had booked for 2010.

SUMMARY

 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
According to camp staff, Fulton overbooked the hunt and had to hire a PH that had never set foot on the conservancy before. The outfitter was not there to greet me upon arrival. He did not even talk to me until I called him on day three to discuss the total lack of buffalo. We drove and walked ALL over the conservancy and talked to locals about the location of any buffalo. There were NO buffalo on the conservancy. His excuse was that the river flooding was worse than normal. This is very hard to swallow, since the river floods every year. This was after he e-mailed me about a month prior to the hunt saying the "buffalo are here" and we look forward to a good year. Instead of just taking people's daily rates knowing the chances of taking a buffalo are close to nil, he should have made contingency plans for what to do if such a situation presented itself. We were told by camp staff that seven other hunters had departed camp prior to my arrival without seeing a buffalo. We drove three bone jarring hours to the Kasika conservancy. But it was so crowded with 4 PHs and 6 hunters that our movements were severely restricted. That many hunters in an area has the potential to be dangerous and the trip resulted in similarly disappointing results. I saw the only two buffalo shot by hunters from my camp, while I was there. They were shot by hunters from Russia, and were shot on the Kasika conservancy. They were NOT trophy quality. They were very young, immature, with very soft bosses. They were VERY poor trophies that should not have been shot. I'm not convinced they even met the minimum for shooting in Namibia. |

After keeping my money 29 days he refunded my $3,000 trophy fee. But that left me paying $1,214 per day for the daily rate, this, to sightsee animals across the river in Botswana. This is more than most elephant hunts cost for the daily rate. |

ADDITIONAL
HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |
 |
|
I'm sure the outfitter will want to come up with a plethora of excuses in order to "set the record straight". It is not my intention to get into a pissing contest with anyone about this hunt. The facts are the facts, and I have had my say. But anyone thinking of booking a hunt with this guy cannot say they were not forewarned.
Rebuttal from Vaughan Fulton of Classic Safaris:
Below is a letter Mr. McAdams posted on an internet site called Africahunting.com under Namibia hunt reports. What is noticeable is that he used a pseudonym on the internet site but uses my name in his attempts to smear my reputation. I have more hunters that have had good hunts with us than negative hunts which could be counted on one hand. These hunters will back up my honesty and sincere intentions to make each hunt successful and enjoyable. I have nothing to hide or fear regarding this hunt.
Members and other readers, A friend forwarded this thread to me; I apologize for a somewhat brief summary as I am sending this out of camp via cell phone coverage.
I respectfully offer the following response; A few facts to consider,
The Hunt
On the morning that McAdams left/was leaving camp, another hunter shot a buffalo in Salambala Conservancy. This would have been the 7th morning of McAdams's 7 day hunt; he however chose to leave early. Furthermore the PH informed me that the sign showed that the buffalo had been in this area for at least two days. Also large herd crossed from Botswana and were around the camp the evening prior to the buffalo being shot.
In McAdams's defense there are no resident herds of buffalo in Salambala, only a few bulls. However there are large herds that come and go into the area throughout the year. Otherwise the game department, or rather our Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) would not approve a quota, one would think and hope.
The buffalo was shot in exactly "One" of the places that I suggested to McAdams's PH to work in. I suggested several other areas as well. Nevertheless, the evening before the buffalo was shot, the PH asked McAdams's PH if they would like to hunt there the following morning. McAdams's PH replied that no they did not as McAdams was leaving the following morning. McAdams it should be mentioned was not at dinner that evening and I was informed that he went to his tent at 5pm (17H00) already as he was not feeling well, in fact his knees were bothering him is what I have been told.
McAdams's claim that they walked and drove the whole of Salambala has had some contrasting words from our camp staff and the game scout. McAdams and his PH were the last to leave camp in the mornings and were back in camp in times ranging from 09H00 to 11H00. Surely this cannot count as hunting or trying hard?
It should also be noted that several months prior to McAdams's hunt he sent me an e-mail insisting that he wanted to hunt in Salambala. He did not ask for my opinion or input. I did not at that stage place concern over this as I would just keep quota for him in Kasika where there are resident buffalo, which I did. I also informed the PH that they should try hunt Salambala a few days (per McAdams's request) and then they could come to Kasika if all else fails.
Kasika hunting is physically challenging 90% of the time, reason being flood plains and swampy area. McAdams sent me an e-mail several weeks before his hunt and informed me that amongst other things he is 300lbs and has knee problems. I was concerned and hoped that he was successful in Salambala given the above. Nevertheless if need be I have put hunters on sleds to get them close to buffalo and make the final approach on foot. A PH must make a plan. So I still had Kasika and we shoot buffalo every year in Salambala so my hopes were still positive.
In reference to the one day that McAdams went to Kasika as in his report, where they could not go anywhere as it was "full" of hunters, they did not discuss their plans with the other hunters. If the ph and McAdams expressed a wish to go there, I know the plans would have been adjusted to accommodate everyone.
The PH (professional hunter) On the second day of the hunt McAdams's PH suggested to me that they go hunt buffalo in the area where he is the full time registered ph. I rejected this based on Firstly; it was only the second day and Secondly; There was quota reserved in Kasika for McAdams which costs us money Thirdly; the PH's quote to me was almost $1000.00 more than what McAdams was paying Classic Safaris for the whole hunt. Surely this places a question mark on ethics and even though the PH is freelancing he surely has a duty to represent the company that is paying him. McAdams pre-paid his trophy fee, this was wired to him and he was to advise me as soon as the funds cleared, he obviously never did. I have paid the PH after I withheld his money till I thought the story was finalized. In my opinion the PH was unethical, left camp early on the morning of the 7th day and also working till 9 or 11 in the morning for the other 6 days surely does not justify full remuneration?
Hunting areas (legality) Classic Safaris hunts in Salambala, Kasika and Impalila Island conservancies. According to legislations no more than 2 parties may hunt the same area. Kasika and Impalila immediately border one another and Salambala is approximately 35km away in a straight line. Self explanatory.
Due to the annual flooding of these areas we have a window of 5-6 months to fill our quota. We are not foolish. PH's have the responsibility to ensure where the other hunters are going and stay within the areas they stated that they would hunt. No rocket science.
The Camp I apologize to McAdams for not enough food on the evening McAdams refers to. I asked my staff and they informed me that there was one evening that clients complained about a shortage of food. Why did McAdams not mention this to me whilst here or even in subsequent e-mails? I can only apologize after the fact. It was however not guinea fowl. Shalom
In general we have not had many complaints about our food before; in fact it has been complimentary. I have taken steps to ensure this for the future and apologise again for the staff slacking.
We have had 4 ladies in camp this year and all were happy with the accommodations and food. Our beds are hotel quality being 6ft 6inches long and ¾ wide and can be joined to make king size double beds, hardly cheap and sub-standard. We do not run a lodge, guest farm; guesthouse, game ranch or hunting ranch to which I suspect McAdams is accustomed. We operate out of a tented camp and in conservancies/ government concessions outfitters may not erect permanent structures.
We offer en-suite toilet and shower facilities and linen is changed on a regular basis and laundry is daily.
Closing I am sincerely sorry that McAdams had an unsuccessful hunt. To forewarn people about Classic Safaris and me is pushing it. Each has his responsibilities and each must face up to his people who have hunted with me and who know me know that I care and try my best for them.
Respectfully, V. Fulton

1. Everything I said happened exactly as posted. I have no agenda or ulterior motive (such as saving my business). 2. Caveat Emptor, he already has my money, don't let him get yours.

I would. We shot a Botswana type bull at a much lesser cost. The PH and staff were professional and accommodating. The elephant are there. |

You should not be disappointed with Vaughan's camps. They are about as well run as can be expected considering the logistic challenges faced by DG outfitters. If your focus is on above average elephant at a reasonable price, Wendell and Vaughan are hard to beat. If you want a mixed bag, consider alternatives. The Namibian side of the Chobe has little or no plains game, compared to the wealth of animals on the Botswana side. Granted we were not hunting plains game, but it would be nice for the diversion when driving the long distances looking for elephant tracks. The bushman trackers on Fred's team are AMAZING. They can follow tracks like you or I follow interstates. There was NO doubt we would eventually catch up to the bulls. That is enough to put a smile on any hunter's face. Fortune was kind to us that day, as we found a bull that exceeded all expectations on the very first stalk. Having my boy Christopher along made it twice as good. The tented camps are comfortable and clean. We heard lions roaring outside the tents most of the nights. Nope, the canvas would be like the cellophane wrapper around a Twinkie - my son thought. But it was so cool.

I was looking for a hunt for native animals under unfenced conditions and was not disappointed. This is a tented hunt in a truly vast desert concession. Terrain varies from open gravel plains to sandy canyons and mountain conditions. Springbok here are truly world class and we took three that made Roland Ward. This area is lightly hunted given its size and the possiblity of finding truly large, mature animals is very good here. Gemsbok, zebra and springbok are very numerous. Kudu require more effort and are not as numerous due to dry conditions. Also saw good steenbok here. This is real, fair chase hunting and stalks can be long. You will not see a fence as they simply don't exist in this wilderness. Guides were very professional, ethical and hard working. Food was excellent, and tent and laundry were cleaned daily. Trackers and skinners were very good and trophies were handled well. We hunted early in the season and some days were quite hot. Bring a flat shooting rifle as shots can belong. I shot kudu at 50, gemsbok at 45, springbok at 250 and 200, zebra at 200. Will bring kneepads and leather gloves when I return for crawling. Saara was our cook and meals were very good and plentiful. Tents were spotless when we returned at night and laundry was done daily. I can recommend this hunt without any reservations.

If you are comtemplating going on this adventure get into shape. The concession is covered with rocks, the cover is scarce and the hikes are long. The area we hunted near Otavi is loaded with many mature eland, a very large population of kudu as well as warthog. I also saw many steenbok, duikers and Damara dik-dik. I only spent a short amount of time in the Tsiseb Conservancy, however, we saw an abundance of springbok as well as jackal and Hartmann's zebra. Other game exists but with less than two days to find a over 16 inch springbok. I had little time for anything else. |

Flying Lufthansa was a pleasant experience. Very efficient and comfortable. They handle the gate for Air Namibia in Frankfurt and that end was smooth as well. The Frankfurt route in my opinion is the way to go. Breaking up the trip on the way over and getting a day room at the Holiday Inn in Frankfurt made my recovery time once in Namibia much shorter than the Joburg route. |

Anyone who wants to hunt eland the proper way needs to go with someone who not only knows how to track eland, but loves to track eland. Vaughan Fulton is that person. While this hunt took place on a cattle ranch with no high fences, we did hunt a few days on Vaughan's new Damaraland concession in western Namibia. This consists of two conservancies covering over 2,000,000 and features a landscape I have yet to see in Namibia. His tented camp was very comfortable and I highly recommend a plains game hunt in this area to someone who is looking for a classic safari. |

This was my second trip with Vaughan Fulton's Classic Safaris. On my first trip I met with Vaughan before and after my hunt but did not hunt with him. His tented camp on a large conservancy is what drew me to his outfit. What brought me back was the quality of my first safari, the PH he paired me up with and his concern for my satisfaction. After listening to him and my first PH (Thorsten Meier) talk about hunting eland, I knew I wanted to hunt eland. There was no question as to which outfitter I was going to use. I would have hunted with any PH Vaughan paired me up with, but he agreed to take me himself. Anyone who knows Vaughan knows that he loves to track game and eland is one of his favorite. This turned out to be a real treat and this was a hunt I will not soon forget.

The PH was outstanding at both trophy evaluation and stalking. Gert believes in spot and stalk, so practice shooting off sticks. Also, I would definitely recommend this hunt in May or later.

This was my second hunt with Vaughan and I am sure I will hunt with him again. Vaughan is an excellent hunter all-around, and has a great deal of experience hunting elephant. He is hard-working and does all of his hunting the old-fashioned way, by tracking the elephant on foot to and from their various watering places. We saw many hundreds of elephant, including many trophy bulls. This area is overrun with big elephant.

This area is known for large springbuck and gemsbuck. There is no shortage of over 15 inch springbuck and over 38 inch gemsbok. We saw plenty of kudu but not in the numbers that we saw gemsbok. We also spotted several nice, mature eland. I plan on returning to hunt eland in the next few years here. Other game I saw in good numbers were mountian zebra, steenbok and giraffe. |

SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
None. Hard to believe, but I don't think it could have gone any smoother. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Hunting a truly natural/wild area with natural, indigenous game species on a 700,000 + concession. Taking all the animals on my list that met or exceeded my minimum standards using spot and stalk techiniques. Seeing other animals and tracks such as elephant, lion, leopard, eland, giraffe and black-faced impala. Making a new friend in my PH Thorsten Meier. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Gaiters. Long pants with zip off legs, good quality optics (8X30 minimum), sunscreen, at leat 5 pairs of comfortable socks. Thin, quick-drying shirts and pants are fine for most areas of nothern Namibia, but thicker type safari shirts and pants are needed in areas with thorny bushes/trees such as those in the Windhoek area. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
Yes |
| Why? |
This is a classic safari adventure in a natural/wild area based out of a primative but comfortable tent camp. However, the cost is much lower than what one would have to spend to get a comparable hunt/experience in Botswana or Tanzania. Game is abundant but you must still work to find them and execute a successful stalk. Vaughan is an excellent outfitter who is truly committed to seeing that every client comes away from the hunt satisfied. I can't say enough about by PH, Thorsten. He is a very knowledgeable and experienced guide who taught me a lot about Namibia, its people and hunting, as well as guide me to the trophies I was after. |

I really do not think this hunt could have gone any better. This hunt was exactly what I was looking for. Even though Vaughan Fulton was very busy getting his new camp in the Capriui set up and running and scheduled to begin a 21-day elephant hunt, he insisted on meeting with me before and after my hunt in Windhoek to understand my goals and make sure I was satisfied. I plan on going back and hunting eland with him in the next year or two. I also have to give a big thanks and plug to Wendell Reich and his company, Hunter's Quest International, LLC. Wendell helped me get booked, get me in touch with a travel agent, helped me plan for my first safari and answer numerous first timer (and somewhat stupid questions) without the slightest hesitation. Thorsten Meier is not one of Vaughan's regular PHs. However, he is a very capable PH and I would not hesitate to hunt with him through his own outfit Ndandi Safaris or arrange with him to hunt other areas or outfitters in Namibia.

I'll not fly SAA again until they improve the seating configuration of their Airbus. Seating in coach is the tightest, most uncomfortable I've ever experienced. The seats in coach seem to have been designed for skinny French models. The meals were ok, but not up to the standard of previous years. The flight attendants were pleasant and courteous, as were the personnel at the check-in counters and boarding gates. |

Too many to mention in detail, but I'd include seeing a leopard during daylight and being able to hunt mountian zebra in the valleys, instead of having to go up into the steep mountains after them. |

I'd recommend hunting with Vaughan Fulton with no reservations or hesitation. He has an excellent area with lots of trophy quality animals. His staff is friendly and helpful. His camp consists of all brand new tents, with private bathrooms attached with flush toilet, sink, shower and plenty of hot water. His hunting area consists of 850,000 acres and is totally unfenced. This is a fair chase hunt, and you will not shoot from the vehicle. I might add that this is an excellent area for big leopard. He also has an excellent area for Cape buffalo in the Caprive Strip. |

I also must mention, that the tents are also furnished with brand new, hotel quality box springs and mattresses, that are better than the ones I have at home. I took a friend of mine with me on this trip. This was his first trip to Africa. He took 2 mountain zebra stallions, a 37 inch gemsbok bull, gold medal blue wildebeest, 15 inch springbok, 52 inch kudu and wounded and lost a monster eland bull.

No problems. Checked everything straight through from Atlanta, via Ilha do Sal and Johannesburg, to Windhoek and back. Service was good, but the airbus A340-600 is a terribly uncomfortable airplane. |

 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
None that were not self-inflicted. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Taking excellent specimens of plains game and then, shifting focus, and going after and taking a huge and heavily maned problem lion near Narawandu to the north of Etosha National Park. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Good, accurate, .300 mag. Plus caliber rifle with premium bullets. Bigger for lions. I used a .338 win mag. And it was perfect. |

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |

|
Vaughan hunts using spot and stalk methods, with the emphasis, as it should be in my opinion, on much careful stalking. He knows the game and the terrain very well, and is an excellent judge of trophy quality. All of my animals were old males with good trophy qualities, be it horn length and mass, or size, in the case of my zebra and lion, and, of course, mane in the case of my lion. And the lion hunt was the most intense hunting experience I will likely ever have. After I had taken pretty much my fill of plains game, I consulted with Vaughan about the possibility of going after one of the two problem lions he had on license from the Directorate of Parks and Wildlife Management of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism. It didn't take me long to decide that I wanted to spend the remainder of my time hunting one of these problem lions who had been active in and around Narawandu, north of the park. This lion had been responsible for killing over sixty head of livestock over the past several months. During that time, the MET had darted and collared him with a radio transmitter and had then relocated him fifty kilometers to the south, deep into the interior of the park. But the lion had quickly returned to his former haunts and resumed preying on the local cattle herds. As a result, the Ministry had declared him a problem lion and had issued a permit to Vaughan that allowed us to hunt him. This hunt was a difficult and very physical effort. We spent the better part of six days and covered many tense miles stalking one specific lion through thick mopane scrub where visibility extended an average of barely twenty-five yards or so. Often, he was accompanied by up to three females and two sub-adults, and in the end, he partnered up with another old male, who could have been his twin. We could rarely see these lions through the brush and high grass, but we frequently heard them growing and grunting just yards ahead of us. On several occasions, although we couldn't see them, we were so close that we expected a charge at any second. Suffice it to say that, with Vaughan's and the Ministry's help, I was able to kill the best lion I will likely ever see, much less stalk and shoot. I cannot recommend Vaughan Fulton enough to anyone interested in hunting in Namibia.
