Equipment Recommendations: Good waterproof hiking boots or gaiters and waterproof pants and jackets. McCrave recommends wool, I like Gore Tex jeans so I can sit, crawl or kneel anywhere and be dry. American hunters usually have some international experience before heading to Europe and seldom are ladies so well escorted and have such an enjoyable vacation while the men hunt (unless the lady wishes to hunt too).

Sherramore Lodge has a unique "drying closet" so you know they have been dealing with wet hunting clothes for decades. The weather was fairly pleasant and what rain we had was simply light showers with only 1/2 day lost to rain. However, the ground is wet all the time it seems so its not the rain but the stalking and crawling that can soak a hunter. Waterproof is the keyword not water repellent. This is one hunt no one should miss.

GAME DESCRIPTION

Major Game Animals Taken: Deer, Roe - Availability: Scarce - Trophy Size: Very good. Mid medal quality. They were there, but not seen. Note: Roe deer are like African bushbuck, solitary - slip about, territorial, not like whitetails or elk/red deer. Game Sought But Not Taken: Game Condition Comments: We hunted hard and took a very good buck on 8th hunt session (morn/night). Conditions good but deer rut moving. Saw one deer and shot it. Much sign of rut. Supposedly height of the rut - but deer were not running all over. Saw very few at low altitude where soil and feed produce best heads. Big problem was visibility. April/May better before growth.

Problems of Hunt: Heavy cover. Difficult to see bucks. Few sightings. Highlights of Hunt: Got a good one, only one seen. One shot. We could have hunted mountains. More animals, poorer quality. Equipment Recommendations: Layers of clothing, rainsuit (rains much). Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? McCrave - quality guide and did his best and knows what he's doing. Honest and realiable. This was an interesting, challenging hunt.

Major Game Animals Taken: Deer, Red - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: The hill stages weigh 250 pounds and are 4X4, 5X5 and some 6X6 or better with nice but not huge antlers. The park stags are over 400 pounds with large antlers. Game Sought But Not Taken: Game Condition Comments: I have never seen that number of males in any area. I saw more stags than hines. I saw 62 stags in one bunch andnundreds during my hunt. The guides (stalkers) want you to shoot stags at least 8 to 10 years old. Each stag is aged and the average age is over 9 years old. I shot a 4X4, 5X5, and then a beautiful 9X8 on a trophy estate.

SUMMARY REMARKS

Problems of Hunt: Highlights of Hunt: 7 night, 6 day hunting for two stags (hill stags) is under $4,000. I shot a big trophy stag 9X8 on another estate. It cost $3,000. Mike does custom hunts for just about any animal legal to hunt in England and Scotland. The lodge was first class, and the estate was spectacular. Everything was green, and the numbers of stags was unreal. The guides and staff were all top notch. Equipment Recommendations: Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? Yes Why? Get up at 8 am, 8:30 breakfast, 9:00 guides pick you up. See hundreds of red deer, shot a stag. Back to lodge to take hot bath, dinner at 7:30 then to the sitting room before a roaring fire for several hours. The most relaxing hunt I've ever been on.
