HUNT REPORT AFRICA MAY 2013

My hunt with Chapungu Safaris in the Northern Cape of South Africa was excellent in every respect. A close friend had previously enjoyed this same hunt, and had recommended it and the outfitter, highly. After meeting with the outfitter, and with Eugene Alberts, the PH who was to guide me, I booked the trip at the Reno SCI show this year.

I arranged flights through Gracy Travel, who always does a fine job, and flew to Kimberley, RSA after clearing customs at Jo'berg . Following a long but comfortable drive we arrived at a beautiful ranch house on the edge of the Kalahari Desert, which was our base. The home was occupied by the owners, who were extremely hospitable and friendly. They provided us with excellent food and drink of our choice while we were there.

The first hunting day, we drove long distances around a particular area where my PH had spotted a very large lion not too long ago. We did not find any fresh tracks, so we went hunting for a bait animal. After shooting a blesbok, we made a drag around the lion's suspected territory, and then hung the carcass in a tree near the spot where the lion had previously been seen. Early the next morning we drove the roads where we had dragged the bait, but found no fresh tracks, so we then went to inspect the hanging carcass, and bingo! There were tracks of a large male all over the area, and it had eaten from the bait. We set out to track him.

After more than five hours tracking the lion on foot, and seeing him at close range several times, he was still running from us. Usually they will stand and confront, perhaps charge, the pursuer within the first hour or two; I am told, but this wise old guy seemed to know that flight was safer.

Finally, it became clear that this chase could probably continue until dark, and Eugene suggested we bring in a truck to stay closer to the lion and confront him more quickly. That was done, and soon we were off, two trackers running after the quarry on foot, and we behind, following in the truck.

The chase was quite exciting, as we ran around, through and over the desert trees and bushes which abound in that area, many 15 feet high. In some ways, that ride was one of the most memorable features of my hunt! Finally, we caught the lion, who was standing behind a thin screen of brush. The driver stopped the truck, I jumped down and moved to a point at which I could get a better shot, and then shot him. He was a large old lion, his face showing the scars and marks of a life fully lived. He had a partially black mane and a huge head and body, and is a trophy I will always treasure.

On that same ranch I shot a duiker, but then we moved to a different ranch several hours away, for a better chance at the other animals I hoped to take (once I had taken my lion). At that point Eugene Alberts left us to guide another client whose PH had taken ill in another region, but he left me in the capable hands of Nikolai Raubenheimer, a young PH who proved to be not only capable, but extremely accommodating and effective. There were four animals on my "wish list" - mountain reedbuck, steenbok, caracal, and at least one other small cat, which I would need to complete my Grand Slam of Cats of the World. Nikolai was able to help me get all of those animals - the other small cat being an African WiidCat.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
The hunt took place in the Charara Safari area adjacent to Lake Kariba and on Ruwanzi Ranch (first two days for bait). I hunted with Ray Townsend of Chapungu Safaris and everything was first class. Having hunted in Africa more than 15 times I can say that hunting with Ray is an absolute pleasure as he always tries (and with me two times succeded) to give the hunter true value for his money. In 1999 I shot a 54-pounder in the Sanyati Campfire area where you usually only get 35-40 pounders max.

The flight with SAA was very pleasant, customs in Zimbabwe easy and there were no safety problems at all.

Ray's area is abundant with leopard, crocodile and hippopotamus and there are many elephant as well.
