GAME DESCRIPTION
Major Game Animals Taken: Elk, Roosevelt - Availability: Abundant - Trophy Size: Very nice mature bull
Game Sought But Not Taken:
Game Condition Comments: We spotted this Bull the first day of scouting on the Island with Sean and Ryan. There was one other herd bull and a few satellites with the group of 10-15 cows. We had a few other nice bulls on the trail cameras. One was a true giant, but very unpredictable. He only showed himself occasionally and then mostly at night on camera, he never had cows with him. He was very difficult to find.

SUMMARY REMARKS
Problems of Hunt: Travel through the Slash could be a bit difficult for some, but this was nothing like the traditional backcountry hunts I have been on. This is a very manageable hunt for anyone in reasonable condition. Cassie, my fiancée, had no issues, although she is pretty darn fit herself.
Highlights of Hunt: We saw three comparable trophy Bulls in the 320-340 range . One was a competing Bull with the one I ended up harvesting. He actually had the cows the night before the opener. We had another straight 6X6 that was a mature bull, but with little Roosevelt character up top we chose to hunt the latter two bulls. There were several satellites with each group. Sean had several other mature bulls on camera that were very nice. One was a dandy! He proved to be quite difficult to pattern and was only seen for the most part at night on camera. He never appeared to be with cows. He was a bit of a ghost with no set pattern to his travels. He seemed to cover quite a bit of ground. While I certainly could have put my time in on the big guy, and I am sure many of your readers would, I chose the bulls that were a bit more consistent and vulnerable while hunting with archery gear. The bull I harvested ended up breaking his G2, but had great main beam length, width, mass and plenty of character. It was a no-brainer for me personally to take the shot at a bull of this caliber the first day&&never pass up a bull youd kill the last day on the first day&&especially with archery gear.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
My fiancée, Cassie, and I arrived on Vancouver Island the morning of the 9th and pre-scouted with Sean and his two other guides, Keith and Ryan Hartling that afternoon. We saw 3 herd bulls that afternoon from several vantage points.

Sean, Ryan and Keith had pre-scouted the area prior to our arrival and had trail cams set up to monitor the bulls in the area.

As I noted before, we had reviewed several trail cam photos of some very good and one exceptional bull. There were no less than 3 active herd bulls and multiple good satellite bulls with cows in the hunting area. Based on what Sean had relayed there were many other areas we did not hunt where he had additional Elk activity.

Sean has a nice lodge in Port Alberni overlooking the Somass river where he typically conducts all of his spring Black bear hunts from. The archery elk area we hunted is a full hour plus from the lodge. In order to keep us closer to the hunting area and spend less time driving, Sean was a able to put together a very nice New Vacation home near Qualicum Beach. This was a nice surprise as the home was a minute walk from the Beach and nicely appointed. Nothing like what I would have expected for an archery elk hunt.

After we harvested the Elk we moved our base back to Port Alberni to pursue black bear and blacktail deer. Although the runs were late, there was Salmon fishing available from the front door of the lodge as we watched the coho and king salmon move up river past the lodge. Plenty of fishermen were taking advantage of that option.

The food was good and generous.

The hunt was conducted by vehicle and on foot. The conditions were warm and dry (unseasonably warm, with record highs). Basically a spot and stalk affair while using the logging roads to cover ground with the truck. We would sit on key lookouts and cover lots of ground with the glass. Once we put the elk to bed in the mornings/evenings from a vantage point we would strategize on the best way to intercept with the guides.

Sean had multiple stands in several meadows where there were known wallows and rutting areas down in the lower elevations and heavy dark older growth timber. I am sure he could accommodate most folks in reasonable shape. Like most things in hunting the more physically capable you are the better your odds for success.

This is an archery only hunt. The shots could be quite tight in the dark thick timber or very long across the open slash. I would be prepared to shoot out to 50-60 yds. I took my bull at 52 yds.

Outside of hunting there was great island scenery with plenty of activities for the family and spouse. Tagging out early and the very minimal bear and deer sightings left Cassie and I with time to enjoy the islands wineries, sea kayaking and more. There is plenty to do on the island in early September. The weather was nothing like I expected. With only one day of rain and most days above 70 degrees it was very comfortable and quite breathtaking.

The bear and deer hunting proved to be quite difficult, although neither was a primary focus. Sean had explained that this would be a tough time to target the bears. The fish were very late moving into the upper rivers and the heat meant they were just not moving in daylight hours. You need the fish to concentrate and hunt these bears in the fall. Sean doesnt typically do any fall bear hunts until October.

We did see juveniles, medium boars and sows and cubs. No trophies were spotted. The deer were the same story. Only young bucks and does with fawns were out. The bucks stayed in the timber with the heat.

Like most free range hunts and archery hunts in particular there are no slam dunks. Sean has the bulls, the age class and genetics are there, you just have to be prepared and ready when the opportunity comes your way&

Vancouver Island is a great experience with plenty to do for the family, especially early in September.

A truly wonderful experience. Sean and his organization are top notch. The lodge is very well appointed and quite comfortable. The food was excellent -- hearty and filling. The chef, Joyce, works magic everyday. She even introduced my hunting buddy to poutine. The hunt area was typical for central Vancouver Island -- mountainous with logging cuts where bears could be spotted and stalked. While we were there, the rut kicked in in a big way and so the boars were roaming all over. The guides (Ryan, who worked with my daughter and me, and Aaron, who guided my son and my buddy) were exceptional -- gifted trackers, knowledgeable woodsmen, and excellent company. We all learned a great deal from them and very much enjoyed the fellowship. It is really impossible to describe the number and size of trophy bears we saw. My daughter took her bear (7'7") the first morning, as we were driving out to sight in the rifles. My son and my friend both took great bears (7'3"; 7'2")on the second day. I tried with the bow for three days but, due to other commitments, I was unable to hunt the entire five days and so I elected to harvest my bear (6'11") with a rifle near sundown on the third day. I cannot remember how many bears -- big bears -- we saw in the time we were hunting with Sean and his crew but they numbered in the dozens. This is a hunt anyone who has a passion for hunting the special places of North America must take.

ADDITIONAL HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL
In reading Lance Stapleton's article in the January 2008 Hunting Report, I am attaching this to my Hunting Report to say that I could not agree with him more. The Peace Region in British Columbia has proven for me, to be an excellent place to hunt for the past three years.

In 2005, I killed a non-typical 184 7/8 gross B&C whitetail buck. In 2006, I did not kill a buck because I was looking for a deer larger than the one I had killed previously. In 2007, I killed a multi-tined whitetail buck grossing 180 2/8 with an 8 inch drop-tine. Since the bucks were non-typical, none of them will book, but for free-range deer, they are huge. These particular hunts are excellent hunts in that you can hunt fields, spot and stalk or hunt over a bait. Since British Columbia has extended the season to November 30th (hopefully permanently), you are able to hunt all through the normal British Columbia rut. From a game standpoint, this area is absolutely fabulous. One morning this past year, over an approximately 100-acre field, we saw 30 elk, 13 moose and several groups of whitetail and mule deer. I personally have not seen a mule deer I wanted to take, simply because I am looking for a 190 plus.

In summary, the Peach Region of British Columbia, as Lance Stapleton said, is a real sleeper and needs to be given consideration for hunting. Personally, Sean Lingl's Canadian Guide Outfitters, is one of the best outfitters I have ever hunted with, if not the best.
