| Problems
of Hunt: |
|
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
I booked this leopard/sable hunt directly with Tristan Peacock, who lives in Zimbabwe. He had bought some hound dogs from an outfitter I know here in Utah who hunts cougars. All went great with the leopard. The first day I shot a good tom. Then I wasted two days looking for sable. We couldn't even find a track or really much of any game. The whole area had been poached out. The problem I had was nothing else beyond the leopard was organized before I arrived. I was very clear that I wanted to hunt sable as soon as the leopard was down. At my request I asked my PH to help. He contacted his cousin, Theo Bronkhorst. Theo was great. He put us on a new farm right away. It too had been poached heavy but at least we saw some game. The farm he was trying to get us into was having a lot of trouble with the war vets. I eventually got into it and was there ever a lot of game. I can't say enough about how dedicated Theo was, what a great guy. I will definitely hunt with him again. As for Tristan Peacock, I would not recommend you hunt with him. Beyond the leopard he cares nothing about your safari. |

I believe this area is too small to hunt just big game. Many times I got on fresh tracks only to have the animal cross a road and not be able to follow. (size of concession is 30,000 acres)
There is plentiful plains game. Herds of sable and eland. If hunter hunted this concession as plains game with option to take big game if opportunity arises, (paying the difference in daily rate and trophy fee) I think it would be better.
Elephant were plentiful (coming in from Hwarge) but by the time you were getting close to some, they were leaving the property. I did manage to get within shooting range of several bulls. But nothing better than 40 pounds.

To: The Hunting Report From: Tony da Costa Date: October 14, 1998 Re: Gordon Green's Hunt
This is in response to your letter of October 13, 1998 which was faxed through to us today.
Firstly, let me say that I am disappointed at Dr. Gordon Green, who felt it necessary to file such a report which apparently has prompted you to feel that a rebuttal is necessary. You should know that I personally went out of my way to give Dr. Green the opportunity to hunt lion, elephant and buffalo on a 14-day safari at $650 per day 1 x l. Dr. Green booked a lion only hunt, and I subsequently offered him the opportunity at a buffalo and elephant. My wife and I personally went to the area to visit with Dr. Green while he was in camp, and this was one day prior to his leaving.
Let it be known that clients who elect to hunt in unfenced areas must understand that the game moves freely, and that an elephant, for example, can travel for miles in a matter of several hours. The area where Dr. Green hunted did not have any fences for 65 miles, but it adjoins other properties. To say that 30,000 acres is a small area is a little bewildering especially since Dr. Green mentioned that he saw over 100 buffalo (from which he harvested one) and herds of elephant during the course of his two week hunt. An area could be 100,000, acres or more and yet be devoid of game at any given time. The size of the area is not the issue. For example, if a client was in pursuit of elephant at a Matetsi concession bordering on Botswana and the elephant crosses into Botswana, the pursuit has to stop. Incidentally, the outfitter paid $5,000 for the first buffalo taken at another location because of their concern that buffalo were not in the area. But, if they had waited a few days more, that would not have been necessary. Yes, the outfitter did go out of his way to accommodate Dr. Green. It is unfortunate that lion did not come to bait, but that is hunting! If a lion was offered in a controlled situation as is done in South Africa, then a 100 percent guarantee can be given. The point here is that the hunt he booked was strictly a fair chase hunt, and if the game does not cooperate, no one can be held responsible for that.
Furthermore, to say that he was within shooting range of several elephant bulls but nothing better than 40 pounds, is, in my opinion, rather reckless. Many hunters would have been pleased to have the opportunity at elephant carrying 40 pounds of ivory, especially when this was offered as an extra for no increase in the daily rate. Dr. Green was given the opportunity to take lion, elephant and buffalo on a 14-day safari, which is unheard of in all my experience. That was a special concession we made to him. Consequently, I fail to understand why he would even file such a report especially when he did not express dissatisfaction with the hunt. In fact, he stated in his own words that he was not unhappy.
The area, to our knowledge, has produced dangerous game and is part of a conservancy where big game is hunted. The property in question adjoins the Sikumi Forest area which is hunted by Ngamo Safaris of the Forestry Division. The vlei situated within the concession has been known to attract elephant, lion and buffalo because of the water. As you are aware, there is a critical shortage of water in the Hwange National Park.
I believe Dr. Green's disappointment was solely because he did not get an opportunity at lion. In conclusion, I must say that he got excellent value as he took two cape buffalo on a 14-day safari that cost him only $650 per day. He did not come away empty handed!

To: The Hunting Report From: Andrew Conolly of Bushman's Safaris Date: October 16, 1998 Re: Gordon Green's Hunt
Thank you for the copy of the report sent in by Dr. Green. I do appreciate your giving us the opportunity to reply and express our point of view. Firstly, I note that Dr. Green rated all our facilities and services as excellent. This is appreciated as we do go the extra mile to try to ensure client comfort and satisfaction. However, I am in agreement with my agent, Tony de Costa, regarding Dr. Green's comments on the size of the area. I am 47 years old and have spent my life in the African bush. I also run photographic safari operation and we operate in the 500,000 acre Matusonda National Park. I have been involved in aerial game counts of the elephant and buffalo population in this area for several years. There is an estimated 4,500 buffalo in the Matusadona. I have conducted five day photographic safaris without seeing a single buffalo. Therefore, I believe, in saying the area Dr. Green hunted is too small is rather naïve. The area has, over the past several years, produced excellent elephant, lion, buffalo and leopard trophies. I echo the same sentiments as Tony regarding Dr. Green's disappointment being related to the fact that he did not take a lion and also agree with all the points raised by Tony. We believe Dr. Green was offered a very good deal and received excellent value for money. He had the opportunity of taking an elephant and regret he was not successful with his lion but can assure you it was through no lack of effort on our part. We thank Dr. Green for the favorable comments in his report but do dispute the comments regarding the size of the area. In every sport there is an element of luck or else it would not be a sport and in this case it was unfortunate lion did not come to any one of the many baits. Once again Mr. Causey, thank you for giving the opportunity to give our opinion regarding Dr. Green's report.
