Game Condition Comments: Game localized near water. Lots of evidence of snaring of game, but numbers still at or above expectations. Saw several black rhino (what a thrill) and was bluff charged by one bull.

Game Sought But Not Taken: Game Condition Comments: All game was in prime condition. The trophy quality was far better than I experienced in Namibia, however the cover is thick, and game sighting is brief. I also could have taken huge kudu, wildebeest, and klipspringer.

Mark and Cathrine were married in Victoria Falls. This was their honeymoon. Luckily we were in Victoria Falls for three days before safari started. Equipment Recommendations: 375 nothing less! Enclosed is my hunting report form for a recent hunt in Zimbabwe, Omay concession. There are great concerns about hunting Zimbabwe now because of the conflicts with war veterans who are trying to take over white owned land and the general economic collapse which has been caused by President Robert Mugabe's lack of financial and economic responsibility in governing his country. I should state that I had no evidence of problems in the area I was in and no problems in the brief time I was in Harare before and following my hunt. It should be noted that Buffalo Range as we speak is still conducting safaris on their own private ranch which is the oldest continuing game ranch in Africa. They have had some encroachment by war veterans but they still have been able to maintain some recent reasonable safaris and some excellent trophies have been taken this year. As stated on my report form, I am concerned by some of the changes I saw in the Omay area this trip as compared to my hunts in Omay in 1995 and 1996. While there still is a good buffalo population in Omay I am concerned because the quota in buffalo has been doubled as have quotas for a number of the plains games species, lion, and for leopards. I think the increase in poaching that I saw has occurred for a number of reasons. Much of it is engendered by the general economic collapse in Zimbabwe which necessitates some people must poach in order to survive. I think the poaching also has increased because of the collapse of the Campfire organization in Zimbabwe which at one time was quite effective. Unfortunately some of the black politicians have become involved in the campfire association and have funneled funds from that to their own pockets rather than back to the communal areas as should have been done. At the time of this writing I certainly would encourage anyone to hunt in Zimbabwe. I do think it would be very important for the person to have up to date contact with their safari outfitter to make sure the situation where they are to go is still reasonable. I certainly hope that Zimbabwe can overcome its current economic crisis and resolve the conflicts with the war veterans. Zimbabwe is a very beautiful country with a great deal of wonderful big game animals. It would be a shame to see that country lost by mismanagement of its politicians.

Game Condition Comments: Game as abundant and great fun to hunt. All hunting was on foot and game had to be tracked and hunted with care. Great challenge.
