SUMMARY
REMARKS |
 |
| Problems
of Hunt: |
We only wanted old mature trophies so we were very selective. Passed on many animals. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Having Eileen see the problem giraffe hunt, 2 hours to find 7 giraffe, 15 minutes to get a shot, one shot kill, and 5 hour skinning and harvesting of all the meat. -Having lunch with Eileen in a tree blind 25 ft. in the air and having Nyala come out after one bite of our lunch sandwich. One hour later 4 So. Impala come for a drink with a great one in the group. Photos of shots at over 100 yds are hard to beat. -While taking the Impala to skinning shed we spooked a bachelor herd of Blue Wildebeest we had been looking for for 3 days. We came back and Themba our tracker over very dry grassy ground picked up the tracks and 45 minutes later with two bad wind blown approaches we finally got it right and got a great trophy. Eileen who had been waiting in the truck and had seen us stalking all around the place drove the truck up for the picture shoot. -the last day of the hunt at dust a great Warthog came in and I thought I made a good shot. Mike tracked him with flashlights in Buffalo thorns for 20 minutes until we found him 45 yds. into the thick stuff. WE both gave some blood to the unforgiving thorns. Themba brought the truck up just as we pulled the tusker out. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
My .300 Rem. Ultra Mag with 200 gr. Swift A-Frame bullets performed well with only one shot successes. Using the A-Square Triad ammunition with the .458 Win.Mag took the Giraffe down with on DT soft point and all three 465gr. bullets shot to the same POA. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
Yes |
| Why? |
Accommodations, game diversity, our PH treating us like royalty, wonderful meals by Tatta and Jabu, seeing different areas to hunt each day, and old mature trophies makes this a hunt I would recommend to anyone wanting a Great Hunt. Garry Kelly personally visited and helped set up our wonderful hunt. Mike Currie and his tracker Themba make a great team and hunt very hard to get what the clients are looking for. |

My wife and I had a really good hunt and Mike Currie from the moment he met us in the Joburg Airport took care of everything and we were very comfortable through out the 7 days we were with him. Bonwa Phala accommodations were first rate and coming out from a 21 day Safari in Tanzania we really loved the endless hot water for showers, drinkable water from the tap, and the heated chalets. Mike and Themba hunted hard for us each day and we looked at a lot of game to get the great trophies we brought back. Mike is an excellent judge of trophy quality and both he and Themba can track with the best of them. Garry Kelly, Nickie for administrative help and questions took care of all of our concerns and helped assure us of a successful hunt. I also owe Adam Clements /SafariTrackers a thank you for recommending through Sean Kelly this hunt and setting it up.

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |

This 9/4-23/05 safari was with Bonwa Phala Gary Kelly Safaris and booked through Bill Williamson/Fair Chase Ltd who are five star in every respect. Air travel was booked through Gracy International - Excellent. Round trip flights from Houston, TX to Jo'burg, RSA were British Airlines World Traveler Plus - Excellent. In-country processing/firearms permit was handled by Air 2000/Hunters Support - Outstanding. Jo'burg to Durban was via South African Airlines - Excellent. PH's were Sean Kelly 9/3 pm - 15/05 for KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Limpopo, Grant Roodt 9/16-23/05 Eastern Cape and Limpopo. Both PH's were excellent with Sean a very competent, hard, persistent hunter and Grant exceptionally lucky. All hunting was done fair chase on foot with a vehicle used for transportation.
Safari started by headquartering at Todd and Lieze Lutman's Crawford Country Lodge, near Howick - staff, accommodations and food were excellent. Hunted in Natal Midlands off NE corner of Drakensberg National Park for Vaal rhebok but after 1 ½ days aborted try due to persistent rain and fog. Moved just north of Hluhluwe to Peter and Sylvia Hasard's Falaza Game Park - staff, permanent tent accommodations and lodge meals were excellent. Hunted three days, first 2 ½ in rain for Livingston suni and Natal red duiker in sand forest. Used a predator call for red duiker that worked very well. Took red duiker at noon at Hasard's Cadillac Farm located to the west of Falaza on the coastal mountain slopes about 1,000 feet higher and out of the coastal rain.
A shotgun is a poor choice for forest game as the pellets will be deflected by the dense vegetation. My use a 30-06 for pigmy antelope was flawed because a 2,700 foot/sec 180 grain projectile makes placement of the bullet a matter of overwhelming importance in preservation of a trophy's cape. If I had to make this selection again I think I'd go for one of the low velocity 17 or 22 calibers like the Hornady Magnum Rimfire or 22 Winchester Magnum.
Following completion of the forest antelope hunting we drove to Salisbury Hill Farm/Thandi Nani Lodge on the southern border of Kruger National Park near Malalane, Mpumalanga - staff and accommodations were excellent, food satisfactory. Hunted 1 ½ days for western road under the auspices of PH Philip Fourie of Thormailan and Cochran Safaris who has the Salisbury Hill Farm hunting rights; however, Sean Kelly's hunting expertise was largely responsible for our success.
Drove to Bonwa Phala located west of Bela Bela, Limpopo - staff, accommodations and food were excellent. Began to dart hunting a white rhino with Pretoria veterinarian Andre Uys in attendance first few days and Warmbad (Bela Bela) vet Hendrik Hansen on the last day. (Uys was called away to treat a rhino cow and calf burned in a wild fire). Dart gun consisted of a Marlin Stainless Model 880SS 22LR rifle with a PNEU-Darting, inc 50 Cal Dart Model 193 system installed directly on top of the Marlin and a Bushnell Holograph Sight attached to the top of the two barreled assembly. The Marlin used a clip fed 22LR blank for propellant and the holographic sight had a green ring and spot turned on by pressing a button. The entire rig was surprisingly light and easy to point and shoot. The dart was about 4 inches long, had a one inch needle about a 1/8 inch in diameter with two fixed wires at a 30 degree angle to inhibit falling out. In the rear of the dart was a telemetry unit powered by two hearing aid batteries which were held in by a red cap with a rim to seal the dart barrel. The dart was loaded with 2.4 mg of M99 (etorphine hydrochloride) an equal amount of Zaparone (animal tranquilizer) and then about ½ cc of water to fill the injection chamber. My job was to turn on the sight, push the safety off when I was in position to shoot with absolutely nothing in the way - not a twig, piece of grass, a bug, anything - place the dart in the rhino's shoulder crease about 1/3 the way down and under no circumstances hit any human with the dart. Both vet's carried an antidote if any of the dart fluid got on anyone- but there was nothing he could do if anyone was hit with the dart and injected as it would be fatal. Following dart injection the rhino would run several kilometers with us in hot pursuit using the telemetry unit to follow if the trackers lost the track. As the medication took effect the rhino would begin an excitation period (silly trot) followed by stargazing (standing) and then would fall over. We had to get to the rhino while it was stargazing and maneuver it to a safe position on its chest where it would be stabilized by the vet before picture taking, measurements and blood tests.
The dart (green) rhino hunt was strictly fair chase with four trackers in the lead, then Sean Kelly with his 458 Dakota then me and then the vet carrying the dart gun. Each am/pm hunt was usually started with us about four hours behind the rhino and then we closed the distance until either the temperature got too hot (90 degrees), the rhino went into bush that was too noisy or dense to successfully get close enough to dart or it got too late to successfully conclude the chase, stabilization and photo session after darting. Stalk to 35 yards and several kilometer chase was very exciting. When back at the truck with everyone having a cold coke or water a rhino unexpectedly appeared out of the thick bush scattering everyone like a covey of quail.
Took a "bull" of a grey duiker on a late evening hunt at Bonwa Phala and an "el grande" Southern Impala on Langkuil Farm just east of Bonwa Phala on the last am hunt with Sean Kelly.
Flew from Jo'berg to Port Elizabeth on British Airlines. Was the first passenger to check a firearm under their new rules (formerly, only SAA could transport firearms domestically in RSA) which made for an interesting time. Headquartered at the Bowker Thornklook Farm at about 2,000 feet elevation near Fort beaufort for Vaal Rhobok and red lechwe. Hunted Vaal at Alex Pringle's Eilston Farm in the Winterberg Mountains north of Bedford at about 6,000 feet elevation. I had dreaded days of walking the steep grassy slopes with my mature legs but Shakes, their Xhose game scout, knew exactly how to hunt and where every vaal ram was. Took a good ram at 240 yards.
We hunted red lechwe on the Brackfontein Farm located about 10 klm SW of Bedford. The hunt was very relaxed taking a good bull at 170 yards.
We then moved to Cannon Rocks on the Skeleton Coast just west of Port Arthur for our last two pigmy antelope. We stayed in Pollos and PH Adrian Purdon's home, Savannah Safaris South. I took a "bull" of a blue duiker ram on the Hope Farm just a kilometer from the Indian Ocean and a very good Cape grysbok 70 kilometers inland near Salem on the Aloe Farm.
Not wanting to fly back to Jo'berg from Port Elizabeth, we spent a day touring Addo Elephant Park and then drove back to Bonwa Phala in two days with Grant Roodt where we successfully hunted a 50 inch Cape buffalo with a camera. We estimated that the 4 ½ year old bull would score near 140 - awfully good for an immature soft bossed youngster. Sure would like to see him in four years or so when he is mature.
I've heard all kinds of opinions about the requirements for a good professional hunter. Some sportsmen value hunting skill above all else. Others want a raconteur that entertains them around the campfire leaving the hunting to the trackers. Then there are those that want a good "gun" believing that an accurate backup shot from your PH is an absolute necessity. Others say that it's best if your PH is lucky. Well, I can say that my Eastern Cape PH Grant Roodt was lucky. Four hours and 30 minutes of hunting over a three day period to take four trophies.
Nickie Walker is Gary Kelly's Personal Assistant and general "Girl Friday". She was probably one of the most competent individuals I have had the pleasure to deal with who not only took care of all client's requests but was the "go-to" person for all the Gary Kelly PHs needs. She is very personable and always cheerful - make a special effort to know her as she handles all of the trophy shipping paperwork. There are no RSA Taxidermists and their screw-ups and egregious charges to deal with on a Gary Kelly safari. Trophy field preparation, packing and shipping was excellent. Received trophies in Houston, TX on 1/6/06. Customs clearance was by Lynette Lily of ABX Logistics (281) 449-0892 - Excellent.
A special note to you old African hands. As everyone knows things are changing everywhere and South Africa is no exception. However, there is one change that didn't really register with me until the last safari. The old Afrikaans names we learned, some of which have been anglized, are now being Africanized. An example is the "old" Transvaal, that became the Northern Province, is now Limpopo. Another is Warmbad that became Warmbath and is now Bela Bela. Part of the fun of being "an old hand" was knowing the jargon and names - Jo'berg for Johannesburg. Jo'berg is now Egoli and Pretoria is Tswne. Not only do I have difficulty making the switch in names but I have great difficulty in pronouncing them correctly. There are 7 major and a host of vernacular languages in South Africa. Anybody out there that can speak Zulu? Xhoso? Sotho?
Managed to complete the following (trophies taken on this safari are shown in bold and the ones shown in plain text were taken on previous safaris): Small 7 - Any one of the subspecies of suni, duiker, grysbok, steenbok, klipspringer, dik dik and oribi; Mini 5 - any 5 of the 9 listed: Livingston suni, Blue duiker, red duiker, grey duiker, cape grysbok, sharp's grysbok. Klipspringer, oribi and steenbok; Tiny Ten - All 10: vaal reebok, blue duiker, red duiker, southern bush (grey) duiker, cape grysbok, Livingstons suni, steenbok, common oribi, southern mountain reedbuck and klipspringer, Big 5 - rhino, lion, leopard and elephant' Finished business - roan and red lechwe and an upgrade - Southern impala. Ten trophies - four of which were gold, three silver and three bronze.

Condition Comments: |
Generally speaking the game was in very good to excellent condition. The areas hunted in South Africa had received above normal rainfall and the vegetation was quite lush, which resulted in numerous bush fires throughout the area. Visibility was diminished at times, particularly in Mkuze due to large bush fires in Natal. Thick bush in the Eastern Cape made locating mature kudu and bushbuck difficult - particularly bushbuck when one considers that they only move very early and very late in the day. Lots of teim was spent glassing trying to locate shootable animals. The animals are there, just hard to locate in the thick bush. In the Northern Province, drought in the past few years has decimated the warthog population - they are one of the first to succumb to prolonged drought. The population is rebounding, but older-age class males with big tusks are somewhat hard to come by - as evidenced by the amount of time it took to collect my pig. Still a huntable population and recruitment is coming on strong with lots of litters observed at the waterholes. |

| Problems
of Hunt: |
No problems encountered. Garry Kelly runs one of the most organized and professional safari operations I have ever seen. Our group hunted four different areas from Grahamstown in the Eastern Cap to Warmbaths in the Northern Province. Transfers went very smoothly, our accomodations and arrangements at each hunting area were taken care of well in advance of our arrival. |
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Seeing a large portion of South Africa. Hunting with a safari operator and PH who are well organized. Seeing a wide selection of big game animals including lion and rhino. Taking warthog and duiker with a .22 Hornet. Seeing large numbers of mature nyala bulls (and other wildelife) in the Mkuze Game Reserve. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Flat shooting rifle with the best scope you can afford - most our shots at the larger game animals were well in excess of 200 yards. Kudu was killed at 330 yards, nyala at 225 yards, hartebeest at 275 yards, gemsbok at 300 yards, zebra at 280 yards. My PH had a Leica rangefinder which was indispensable. In most cases, it was not possible to stalk closer due to terrain and habitat - particularly in the Eastern Cape. Need good binoculars and spotting scope would be good for hunting the Eastern Cape. Also need some sort of tick repellent - ticks were really bad and I contracted African Tick Bite Fever. |

One of the best, most organized hunts I have ever been on. The staff was very competent and professional, the food and accomodations were excellent, and we saw a great diversity of wildlife. |

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |

|
Our recent hunt with Garry Kelly/Bonwa Phala Safaris was as close to a flawless hunt as one could hope to expect - particularly considering that we hunted four different areas and conservatively covered over 2,000 kilometers in country. Our professional hunters were young, but highly experienced and knowledgeable on the species/areas hunted and we had an enjoyable hunt as a result. Despite the fact that we hunted on various private properties for many of the species, this was not a "canned" hunt as evidenced by the fact none of us were unable to take a Cape bushbuck despite numerous sightings of femeals and younger males. The hunting in the Eastern Cape was difficult from the standpoint that the areas that we hunted outside of Grahamstown were rough with dense vegetation making spotting game difficult. The farm that we stayed at was quite comfortable, the food was excellent and our host was very hospitable. Hunting nyala in Mkuze was also quite an experience. The camp maintained by the Natal Parks board was more than comfortable and the food was exceptional - and then there was the wildelife. Scores (literally) of nyala would come to the waterhole each day along with rhino, impala, zebra, baboons, etc. What a spectacle to sit and watch the animals come to water. Early mornings and late afternoons were spent stalking nyala in the bush along watercourses with giraffe, white rhino, red duiker, zebra and wildebeest encountered in the hunting area as well. Finally, Bonwa Phala Ranch itself - the accomodations and meals were wonderful and the staff treated us like long lost relatives. What a wonderful place. My hunting at Bonwa Phala was primarily for the more "common" species including warthog, impala, zebra nad duiker. While we saw quite a number of pigs and impala each day. I hunted hard for three days before I took my warthog and impala, taking an older zebra stallion on the next day and a grey duiker on the last morning of the hunt. We often seem to take these seemingly more "common" species for granted, but I spent a great deal of time looking for the right males of each species and the wait finally paid off, largely due to the experience and persistence of my PH (Mike Currie). As hunting often goes, an absolute monster pig came in to the water hole while hunting zebra after I had taken my pig earlier in the day. As stated above, I give Garry Kelley, his staff, and Bonwa Phala safaris very high marks on our safari. I was also quite impressed with the professional and personable nature of Mike Currie - hunting with a PH like Mike makes the days pass way too fast. A quick note about bringing firearms into South Africa. Through the advice of Garry, we enlisted the services of Air2000 Hunters Support at Lanseria International Airport. They had our permits in hand when we departed the aircraft in Johannesburg and walked us through the process with no problems whatsoever and no appreciable wait. Our guns were inspected, the serial numbers verified, and we were on our way - took about one hour total for the three of us to collect our baggage clear customs and the South African Police Service inspection process. We did have some problems with airport personnel after clearing customs getting our guns transferred to the connecting flight to Port Elizabeth, but prior contacts mad with the appropriate personnel with the connecting airline by both Gracy Travel and Air2000 allowed us to persuade the recalcitrant airport personnel (not my job type of thing) to transfer our firearms or suffer the consequences. The service of Air2000 cost $150 for each of us, but I would strongly recommend that anyone planning on hunting in South Africa or needing to clear their firearms through Johannesburg consider using their services - it is well worth the cost. We had more trouble getting our guns accepted/cleared by British Airways in Denver than clearing customs and the South African Police Service process in Johannesburg.

Free range rhino in Mkuze is a fantastic experience. Garry Kelly is as good a PH as I have hunted with in six African Safaris - very hard worker.

This was out 6th trip to Africa with BA. Our experience with them has always been satisfactory but this last trip was a real breeze. We did not have a single hiccup while traveling with guns in either direction. The BA staff was particularly eager to please and made our travel a real joy. |

| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Taking the elephant with a brain shot after hours of tracking. Seeing the quelea "Swarm" with literally millions of birds was breathtaking WOW!! Driving 3500 miles all over RSA and back and forth from RSA to Botswana. Okavango was fabulous and may be one of the most beautiful places Sadie and I have ever been. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Good boots with ankle support for vaal rhebok and mt. reedbuck. TEVA's or cheap canvas sneakers for the Okavango. |
| Would You
Recommend This Hunt to a Friend? |
Yes |
| Why? |
Because it was fun everyday. The PH knew his business. All was coordinated extremely well. In short there basically were no problems. |

Garry Kelly organized a safari for us covering the majority of RSA and 2 areas of Botswana. I can't see how it could have gone smoother. Garry did an amazing job of coordinating half a dozen areas for us to stay and hunt in RSA plus the elephant hunt in Botswana. All went off without any real problem. Bonwa Phala is Garry's home property in RSA and showcases Garry's attention to detail. With immaculate grounds, extremely comfortable accommodations and fabulous cuisine complimented by great wine. This was our first experience with Garry Kelly and it will not be out last. He puts on a first rate hunt for whatever species you are interested in plus delivers a level of service not surpassed in my experience in the industry.

HUNTER COMMENTS AND/OR OUTFITTER/BOOKING AGENT REBUTTAL |

One of Africa's most prized trophies is the Southern nyala. With its striking, ivory-tipped, spiral horns, gray-brown shaggy coat with black fringe at the bottom, white markings with long white mane and yellow-orange legs, many consider it the most beautiful of all the spiral horned antelope. I've just returned from what well may be the number one hot spot for nyala in the Republic of South Africa - the Mkuzi Game Reserve in Zululand. The reserve is situated some 285 kilometers north of Durban. A 2½ hour to three-hour drive on excellent roads takes you through rural, agricultural land. The principal crops are sugar cane, pineapple, sisal and Eucalyptus trees (which are harvested and ground up for paper pulp). The Mkuzi Reserve, which lies some 15 miles inland from the Indian Ocean, is divided by the Msunduzi River. The area south of the river, about 25,000 acres, is set aside for hunting. Owned and operated by the Kwazulu Natal Parks Board, accommodations are in modern tents, adequately but spartanly furnished, with washing facilities en suite. A nice fillip not commonly encountered in tents is electricity (with a mini-fridge) and hot water 24/7, thanks to the eco-tourist facilities on the north side of the river.
Nyala are territorial, and the resident herd is estimated at 4,000 by Garry Kelly of Bonwa Phala Safaris, who has received a large percentage of the nyala hunting licenses made available here. Garry brings with him his own tracker, Enoch, and personal chef, TaTa, as well as all the provisions. The cuisine is outstanding. While, with Garry as my professional hunter, we combed the entire area numerous times during the course of our hunt, the two principal places for locating trophy bulls were the one and only water hole (which we viewed from a blind in the morning) and a large vlei, approximately one mile wide by five miles long, which we hunted in the late afternoon. The vlei has been completely taken over by cremolina, a noxious weed accidentally imported into Africa with Australian cattle feed. However, nyala like the tender shoots, and in this vlei keep the weeds trimmed down to a height of three or four feet. Of course, one cannot judge a trophy when its head is down feeding, so obviously you have to wait until they occasionally look up to find a good bull. On a typical afternoon, it was not uncommon to observe a couple of hundred or more animals feeding, and there were doubtless many more we could not see, especially the females, which are much smaller in body. From a hunter's viewpoint, the cremolina provided good cover for a stalk, and we were able to creep within 125 yards of the bull I took midway through the hunt. While it did not hit the magic 30-inch mark (other bulls taken at Mkuzi have), it was a very good bull measuring 29 and 29 2/8 inches, with an overall score of 75, which will place it well up in the SCI record book. While I was there, another hunter took a bull almost as good at the water hole.
Unfortunately, management by the Parks Board leaves something to be desired. On the one hand, they are ultra-conservative when it comes to issuing hunting permits, allowing only 12 nyala per season when, according to Garry (who, although only 50 years old, has more than 30 years experience as a professional hunter), the off-take could be easily increased to 20 without harming the herd. Likewise, there are numerous Livingstone suni in the reserve. We never saw less than three or four every day, but the Board issues only one permit per year. I used up Garry's allocation for the year. Likewise, red duiker are running around all over the place, yet the Board issues only two permits per year. (I used up one.) Garry believes the off-take could be increased to five or six without harming the population.
On the other hand, the Board simply does not address some key conservation problems. For example, it has been a dry year at Mkuzi, yet the Board has allowed some water holes to dry up even though they are equipped with bore holes and pumps. It is simply a matter of turning them on, which the Board has failed to do. And while the nyala seem to like the cremolina, in areas where they do not graze the weed grows eight to 10 feet tall and forms an almost impenetrable barrier, driving out native grasses. The Board has done very little in the way of weed control. Perhaps worst of all, poaching is rampant, with poaching success fueled by a change in the labor laws. Game rangers and other Park employees used to work 25 straight days a month and then have five days off (this in addition to their 21-day annual vacation). Now they have weekends off as well, with only a skeleton staff (who draw overtime pay) on duty. It didn't take the poachers long to come up with a new game plan to maximize their chances of success. On a Saturday or Sunday morning they start a fire on one end of the reserve, and when the skeleton staff dashes off to put out the fire, they use dogs to drive game into snares set on the other side of the reserve.
The reserve is also home to some young and feisty elephant bulls, and has a large huntable population of white rhino as well as some black rhino, which tend to be more ill-tempered than their white cousins. As a consequence, you need to be on your toes when prowling the bush.
My hunt concluded in the Drakensberg Mountains, where I took an excellent vaal rhebok. However, I wasn't in "sheep shape" for this demanding terrain and paid the price in muscle aches and pains for several days thereafter.
A side trip to the site of the battle of Rorke's Drift, a major engagement between British Infantry and Zulu warriors during the Zulu War of 1879 and upon which the movie "Zulu" is based, is highly recommended. There is a well-maintained museum and tourist shops there as well as artifacts of the battle and monuments to the dead on both sides.
A few tips for the traveling hunter: The Hunting Report has already warned hunters headed to RSA of the change in firearm import laws, and you would be well advised to have your paperwork completed and in hand before a visit to the firearms office. What I do not believe has been reported is that while the process is now nominally in the charge of the South African police, you will not be dealing with sworn, uniformed officers. Rather, you will be dealing with low level (read poorly paid) civilian employees, who are new to their duties and generally unfamiliar with firearms and ammunition, which they insist upon viewing and counting, cartridge by cartridge. (Don't load your heavy ammo box in the bottom of your safari bag, as I have always done.) You will have to help them in this regard, since many cannot distinguish between a 450/400 and a 30-06. While unfamiliar with guns and ammo, they are all too familiar with the African custom of baksheesh. Stand by to be shaken down for 20 to 40 rands as a "present." Did I pay? Of course. If you are transferring planes, as I was, who knows where your guns may end up if you don't? It is a sad departure from the professionalism of the customs officers.
(Don Causey Note: October 2, 2002: Since this report was filed, airport authorities have cracked down on bribe-taking and even installed surveillance equipment to combat it. They have asked us to warn travelers that bribe-taking and bribe-giving are both illegal. Our advise is do not do it.)
If you are going to Mkuzi, South African Airways runs a half dozen or so flights from Johannesburg to Durban every day. Of course, SAA is still the only carrier which flies non-stop to RSA (all the others go through Europe and generally are not as "gun friendly" as SAA), but if you are going to use it, either fly out of Atlanta or be sure your domestic flight to JFK lands at Terminal 3. The SAA daily flight to Johannesburg departs from Terminal 3 at 5:55 pm, and trying to get from any other terminal to number 3 during rush hour is an exercise in futility. After spending 45 hot, sweaty minutes on a non-air-conditioned shuttle bus (during the last 20 minutes of which the bus didn't move more than 20 feet) my wife and I got off the bus with our hand luggage (other passengers got off with all their luggage) and we walked through the streets to Terminal 3 competing with cars, buses, limos and taxis, as there are no sidewalks connecting the terminals.
Also, travel agents still are not factoring in enough time between connecting flights to allow for the post 9/11 security checks. These are apparently designed to make air travel as inconvenient and unpleasant as possible, so prepare to have all your luggage X-rayed (which may destroy your film) and your person frisked, wanded, poked, probed, your shoes and belt removed, and you and your possessions sniffed by a bomb detecting dog. And all this takes place not once but two, three or more times per flight (it took us four flights to get from South Dakota to Durban). Perhaps the most onerous is the so-called "random" search at the gate. In my experience, there is nothing random about it. Because of the prejudiced view against "profiling" by Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta, who as a Japanese American teenager spent World War II in one of our detention camps for all Japanese, if you are an olive skinned, black-haired male between 18 and 45 who may possibly be of Middle Eastern ancestry you may be assured you will not be picked for the random search, during which they completely tear apart your hand luggage. Rather, those chosen will be elderly men and women, teenagers, women with infants, etc. In short, "easy marks" who will likely not complain. It is a terrible waste of resources and an insult to American citizens of whatever ethnicity.
All of my trophies taken on the hunt, which was booked through Tommy Morrison of Sporting International Inc., will score well up in the book. For its specialized trophies, I recommend Mkuzi Game Reserve and Garry Kelly at Bonwa Phala Safaris. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for this area, although I do not think it is really necessary unless you are there in the period of October through May. We used Malarone and experienced zero side effects. Personally, I'd rather contract malaria than use Lariam. I know, and know of, too many people who have experienced severe side effects on this medication, ranging from nightmares to psychotic episodes recurring over a period of a year or two after stopping use of the medication -kind of like an extended bad trip on LSD. Insect repellent remains useful, however, as the area is loaded with ticks. Indeed, it is said that Zululand is the home of ticks and black mambas as well as numerous nyala.

I have made many trips to Africa and although this was essentially a rhino hunt I rate it as one of my finest African experiences. There can be little doubt this is Africa's best rhino or nyala hunt. As MacArthur said, "I shall return." |

Gerry Kelly has to note with the elite PH's of Africa. He is personable, experienced and very knowledgeable. I hope very much to hunt again with him. His field trophy evualation and judgement is second to none. Garry runs the company with the same skill he hunts. His wife Dawn handles office matters with the same skill. This wa my second safari with Garry. The first one in 2000 was also terrific. On that hunt I hunted both Mkuze and the area in and around Bonwaphala Ranch.

Condition Comments: |
The game was in a very good condition. The grass was still high and thick, due to the heavy summer rains which were still evident up to the last days of my hunt. Borokalala game reserve and Bonwa Phala farm are excellent areas for taking all above mentioned trophies. I have hunted three different areas. The hunt involves some extensive driving. |

SUMMARY

 |

of Hunt: |
|
| Highlights
of Hunt: |
Stalking the wounded cape eland for five and a half hours with the best three trackers in vain. Watching these people working so hard in the bush, is an experience that you cannot forget. Also, taking out of my 16 animal trophy list the 13 from which 11 made to the book, I think this is great. Garry Kelly is an excellent professional. |
| Equipment
Recommendations: |
Gaiters, to avoid tick bites, as this might result in tick bite fever. |

Yes |
| Why? |
Whoever wants an excellent plains game hunt offering abundant availability and variety of trophy animals, experienced PH with personal touch and excellent camp facilities. This is a first class operation. |
