This hunt was planned especially for a big leopard. 7 foot 6 inch or better. Bobby Hansen was aided on this by Lin Stanton. Bobby and Lin are as good, successful leopard men as there is. We had plentiful baits out on a couple ranches. Had many hits by young small males and females. The big one just outsmarted us this time. Overall a great two weeks. Also had a young couple videoing the hunt, plus before and after. Might go commercial with it. Will have some copies of it at SCI Convention in Reno in January 2004. Highly recommend Afton Guest House in Joburg. Also, the Chuck Wagon Steakhouse nearby. The bonus was finding and one-shot kill on a monster, 13 foot 6 inch crocodile. There were no problems at any time with "War Vets" or poachers. No problems going through South Africa into Zimbabwe and return. Zimbabwe is now charging $30 Visa fee at entry. As usual if you go by the book, have all paperwork in order and keep a smile on your face. All is well. Diesel fuel hard to come by and expensive, brought some in from South Africa. The South African Rand is now 5 to 1 US, Zimbabwe is now 3,000 to 1 US.

(This report is part of a larger report which includes Zimbabwe. Its ID# is 2553). After reading your report on Bobby Hansen Safaris in the November 2001 report, I felt you could use some additional information on Bobby Hansen Hunting Safaris. I first met Bobby at a Safari Club function held by the Chesapeake Chapter. Bobby had donated a seven-day, two on one plains game hunt in South Africa for their annual fundraiser. The hunt included, kudu, impala and warthog for each hunter. He has made this donation for several years in a row. My friend John was the successful bidder on this hunt in 1998 on a hunt to be held in 2000. I was the second hunter on this hunt. We had heard nothing but good from other club members about this experience while hunting with Bobby Hansen. This was both John's and my first trip to Africa and everyone we talked to about Africa recommended a plains game hunt for your first African Safari. We both wanted more animals then the donated three and extended our hunt to ten days of hunting. When we got to Africa we hunted one on one for the whole hunt. John hunted with Bobby, and my PH was Johnny Demos. We hunted the Northern Province the first seven days and in Swaziland the last three. Most of the game was hunted in the Northern Province but also hunted Swaziland because we both wanted nyala. Bobby only charged us the two on one daily rate for the first seven days and one on one rate the other three days. Between John and I we collected 22 animals, nine of them were SCI gold. We both had great hunts with excellent PH's. In short, everything was excellent from start to finish. Having had such a great experience on our 2000 safari, Bobby was the first one we considered on our 2001 safari. John wanted to hunt four of Big 5 and I wanted to dart a rhino and hunt leopard and bushbuck. This meant John would hunt Zimbabwe, and I would hunt both South Africa and Zimbabwe. Although we were to travel to South Africa together we would be hunting different areas. John hunted the Matatai Safari area in North West Zimbabwe. For John's hunt in Zimbabwe, Bobby was more of a booking agent but he stayed with John during the whole safari. I hunted with Bobby Hansen Safaris while in South Africa and Johnny Demos was my PH, he also traveled to Zimbabwe with me for that part of my hunt. We flew to Bulawayo and were picked up by Mat Stanton of Mbalabala safaris. I would be hunting Zimbabwe with Mbalabala Safari for leopard and bushbuck. Johnny stayed with me throughout this hunt and my PH from Mbalabala was Lyndon Stanton, son of Charles Stanton, owner of Mbalabala Safaris. I hunted the Chingwezi camp located on the Runda River in South East Zimbabwe. The concession is 120,000 acres. Leopard hunting is very "iffy" at best. I have talked to several people who have hunted leopard and success runs from first day to two other trips to Africa to finally get a leopard. I was successful on the leopard on the seventh day of the hunt; it only took John two days for his leopard. On my hunt we had more than a dozen baits out, but until we used zebra for bait, the leopard showed only little interest. My leopard was a three-year-old male of average weight, 115 pounds. When I got to Zimbabwe, I was told that there was one sable still available on their quota. The day after my success on the leopard I was really lucky and took a great sable in the afternoon. The next morning I was successful on bushbuck. Seven days we hunted hard, collected and checked baits, without success, then three animals in a day and a half. I had a great hunt, and I give credit to both Bobby Hansen who tailored this hunt the way I wanted it. The ranch I hunted with him in South Africa for the rhino and with the safari company he booked me with for my hunt in Zimbabwe and the great operation of Mbalabala Safaris and the Stanton family. I would recommend Bobby Hansen Hunting Safaris without reservation based on the two hunts I've had with him and the one he booked for me. As I understand it, it is very difficult to get a leopard permit in South Africa where Bobby lives and primarily hunts. When he has a client that wants a leopard he has to take them to another country and use a Safari Company license in that country.

All plains game abundant and in very good condition.
